founding fathers. He encouraged the establishment of a liberal arts college on the Virginia frontier to assure the survival of civilization in the new country.

Candidates are identified after their freshman year at Hampden-Sydney, based on their grades. Madison Scholars are entitled to the same benefits, and bound by the same requirements, as other Honors Scholars. The scholarship stipend is $20,000.

T H e COu r Se SHonors Scholars have the opportunity, by invitation of the Honors Council, to enroll in special courses.

The introductory Honors Seminar for freshmen is typically a year-long course jointly taught by two or more instructors from different divisions of the College. These seminars investigate multidisciplinary topics not otherwise covered by the general curriculum, and focus more on inquiry than coverage of material.

Honors reading Seminars are one-semester one-credit courses taught by a single faculty member in which students read and discuss a single work of fiction or non-fiction. Honors reading seminars are intended for non-freshman Honors Scholars, but are open to any student with the instructor’s permission.

The Student Summer research program awards research grants and provides on-campus housing to students who show exceptional promise as independent researchers.

department Honors projects are a series of research or reading courses, tutorials, and independent study focused on a central theme and culminating in a Departmental (Senior) Honors Project in the student’s major or, if a student is pursuing a double major, in a cross-disciplinary project in both fields.

The Senior Fellowship program provides a year-long program of independent interdisciplinary study—and freedom from certain major requirements—for outstanding students

FOR OVER 40 YEARS the Honors Program at Hampden-Sydney College has given men of talent the opportunity to pursue an education in an environment tailored to the way men learn best. The Program is designed for students who give evidence of intellectual curiosity, independence of thought, and excitement in learning. It is for the man who sparks the enthusiasm of fellow students and challenges the best in his teachers. The size of Hampden-Sydney and its excellent faculty provide the perfect environment for this multifaceted program, which includes academic rigor, independent research, and cultural enrichment. We are proud that one-fifth of the students at Hampden-Sydney hold Honors Scholarships and participate in this exciting program.

T H e SCHOl A r SH ipSEntering students are eligible for three categories of Honors Scholarships. They are awarded on the basis of a student’s academic credentials from high school. Each scholarship provides a grant stipend. Additional funding beyond the stipend is possible through our regular financial aid program, based on a student’s financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

To maintain his annual scholarship, each recipient must achieve a specified grade-point average and enroll in at least fifteen credit hours per semester.

The Allan Scholarship is named in honor of Denison Maurice Allan. Born in England, he came to Hampden-Sydney at 15 and finished, in three years, as the valedictorian of the Class of 1916. After graduate studies at Harvard, he returned to the College, teaching philosophy, psychology, math, modern languages, and physics. He was empowered, he said, by a “passion to give one’s best to God and man.”

Candidates with an SAT of 1400 (ACT of 32) or better and a class rank

in the top 5% will be considered for this award of $30,000.The venable Scholarship is named for a family closely tied

to the institution. When the Founders of Hampden-Sydney College gathered in 1775, they met in the law office of Nathaniel Venable, at his plantation Slate Hill, a few miles south of the campus. That small building was moved to the campus in 1944 and placed in the side yard of Atkinson Hall. It is now referred to as “The

Birthplace” and is a listed landmark in our National Historic Preser va tion

Zone. Descendants of the Venable family have helped the College

prosper, since its founding.Candidates with an SAT of 1350 (ACT

30) or better and a class rank in the top 10% will be considered for this award of $25,000.

The patrick Henry Scholarship recalls the great American patriot who served on Hampden-Sydney’s first Board of Trustees and was five times Governor of Virginia. Henry lived in Prince Edward County as the College was being founded, and served it as a Trustee until his death in 1799. Patrick Henry sent seven of his eight sons to Hampden-Sydney

College. Candidates with an SAT score of 1250 (ACT 28)

or better and a class rank in the top 15% will be considered for this award of $20,000.

The Honors Program also has an annual competition for The madison Scholarship, an “in course” scholarship, for exemplary students who did not enter Hampden-Sydney with an Honors Scholarship, but who have excelled while here. The Madison Scholarship honors

James Madison, a charter Trustee of Hampden-Sydney, who is often called the most intellectual of America’s
