international countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and India
• All together there were 1,960 Walmarts when he died
• His death was caused by multiple myeloma
Life of Sam
• In high school he was a student leader, basketball star, and quarterback
• For three years he was a captain in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps.
• Married Helen on Valentine’s day• Sam’s dream in life was at first to only open a
small variety store

• After he served in the military he went to go work at a JC Penney store
• Instead of taking all of the credit for the success of Walmart, Sam gave it to all of his employees
• Sam had invested in early technology like barcodes
• Walmart was one of the first stores to use barcodes
Sam’s Genius
• Even after Sam was rich he still drove around in his pick-up truck because he didn’t want to waste money on brand new cars
• His Cooperate headquarters had no fancy flooring or executive dining areas
• To get his first business started his father-in-law had given him $20,000

• In 1991 Sam was named America’s most successful merchant
• Before he died George Bush had awarded Sam with the Presidential Medal of Freedom
• Now there are over 9,700 Walmarts in the world
