CHARLES NEALA Sense of Place - Evolved Perception

Every place or space has a personal association wherein lives are created, formed and experienced. This can be by means of identity, history, pride or joy. Paintings which are particularly representational in form, and therefore relate directly to our sur-roundings, can be a means to encapsulate our feelings for a place by the usage of visual language.

The act of painting, being a unique process of relating to, and expressing the world and its many facets, using one’s own subjective perception, can result in inducing enquiry and a search for further developing and refining the way to portray subject matter.

As one proceeds through life, values, priorities and perceptions are ever changing and evolving. A career in painting promotes and encourages an inner need to progress through changes in style, treatment and subject matter. The work therefore becomes a marker relating to the painter’s act of seeing.

Each motif is discovered and emotionally experienced, internalized and expressed through an inner creative dialogue, where accumulated perception and valuation create a unique visual poetic language. The collective output of a life’s work represents the personal artistic journey.

The world with its inherent beauty is there to be enjoyed, admired and held in reverence. Paintings can provide the viewer with a mirror to their inner perceptions and emotional expression and also become a vehicle to dream and to go beyond the self and the familiar.

Art in general can be a testament to living and an affirmation of what we are about, also a means to articulate our feelings through external forms of artistic creation. We all have a primitive need to convey and share our emotions about ourselves, our associations, responses to the world and the people surrounding us.

Charles Neal was born in Surrey in 1951. He lived in Wallington and nearby Beddington until his move to the Cottswolds in 1983. From the age of 14 he studied art and worked under the guidance of Malcolm Domingo and Frances Lane-Mason for ten years.

Neal recognized that the world is constantly changing, and felt a need to record nature, the countryside and the coastline before they change beyond recognition. Seasonal change, time of day, different combinations of light and atmospheric effects all offer the artist a real challenge. Neal responds to this challenge unreservedly – his ability to see nature and convert it into art with a sympathetic blend of realism, inspired impressionism, and in particular his sense of color has made his work much sought after by collectors throughout the world.

Charles has traveled widely in England and France looking for new aspects of the landscape in all its moods. Gloucestershire, where he lives now with his wife and family, has been a source of endless inspiration.

Neal has exhibited in London and New York and his work has been hung at the Royal Society of British Artists and is represented in many private and corporate collections. Neal was honored when, in 1994, The Prince of Wales came to open his Painted Gar-den Exhibition at The Museum of Garden History. The Coasline Exhibition organized in conjunction with the National Trust followed this. This exhibition recorded on canvas the many different aspects of the English coastal landscape and furthered Enterprise Neptune’s campaign to preserve the unique English coastline.

While painting, Neal becomes completely submerged in his subject matter and dedicated to his passion. He creates an astonish-ing variety of Impressionistic paintings, all of which are bathed in light and shadows captivating the viewer.

Parks are a breathing space for a city, a place to meet friends, chance meetings, lovers to stroll, a place for reminiscence and for children to venture and play.

A ferry is an essential service to those communi-ties who live by a river or estuary, especially the wide expanse of the Rance. It eliminates the long journey to Dinard or Dinan to cross by bridge. Ferry boats act as a social connection, for a time, whilst all in the boat together – a means to chat, gossip and catch up on events.

The delightful fishing village of La Richardaise is so typical of the old estuary way of life. Nowadays, sailing dinghies and pleasure boats, with the occasional fishermen, make their way to Dinard and then on out to sea, or to sail along the River Rance.

Friar’s Court is a historic site, the Cotswold stone house has stood on its moated site near to the river Thames for more than 300 years. There has been hab-itation on the site since 1149, when the monastic knights of St. John of Jerusalem, founded the first ‘Hospitaller’ in Ox-fordshire. A glimpse of the outer garden from the rose gar-den invites the viewer to sense the peace of early summer.

For me, Eastleach House has been a magical gar-den. Originally created from a meadow by Mr. and Mrs. David Richards, over recent years it has been managed entirely by Mrs. Richards, who, along with her devoted gardeners have planted a particu-larly individual and atmospheric English garden.

A weekend ritual in these parts is to walk along the promenade and watch the world go by, or to make the short trip across by boat between Spain and France. There is that special feeling of being by the sea. The palm trees that line the banks provide frames to glimpse the sailing boats wending their way.

The painting considers the idea of sug-gested space, the subject of a woman tend-ing the garden is seen only as a reflected form; apparent only in the mirror. The viewer is placed between the inner world of the mirror and its reflections and the outer space behind, which is suggested by the light direction and highlights formed on the table and flower arrangement.

Allotments are a communal place for gardeners - a social retreat for those with ‘green fingers’. It is amazing how individual each plot is - the very character of the owner is expressed in the planting. Here, the established plot of laburnham, irises and fruit trees together create an assembly of contrasting and striking colours and shapes.

Spetchley Park is a wonderful estate and gardens which are connected with Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire and the Berkeley family. At every turn there is a visual delight. The composition relates to the relative reality we experi-ence. In this picture Susan poses for the subject of someone reading and los-ing herself in the inner world of words. A symbolic abstracted language when infused with the internal world of the reader creates a reality of thought. This is contrasted by the material reality of the surrounding beauty of the setting.
