Walkway, balcony and terrace refurbishment:

Our systems are designed to be applied to the majority of common

substrates found on walkways, balconies and terraces. All systems are

fully compatible with existing asphalt and Triflex systems generally are

recognised as the leaders in asphalt overlay. The properties of our

systems allow the costs, risks, time and disruption associated with the

removal of the existing coatings to be eliminated.

New build walkways, balconies and terraces:

When considering the waterproofing and surfacing or surfacing only of

new build walkways, balconies and terraces, Triflex systems have

numerous advantages over traditional materials.

Not only do Triflex systems offer considerable health and safety benefits

during application, they can also offer cost savings. The wide choice of

systems and finish variants also allows colour, texture and design to be

incorporated from the outset.

With low system thicknesses compared to asphalt for example,

threshold heights can be minimised.

The living LIFE-OUTSIDE concept was introduced to allow the walkway, balcony and terrace environment to become an extension of the internal

living environment.

Colour and design are important to us in our homes and gardens, but are often overlooked when considering walkways, balconies and terraces.

Triflex systems allow the design of open living and access areas to be tailored through our range of finish options and by allowing possibilities for

other coverings.

Our seamless liquid applied systems avoid the need for joints, seams and fixings, eliminating the weak spots and providing the client with a totally

homogenous, waterproofing and surfacing solution to protect their investment. Our range of systems allow accommodation of virtually all

walkway, balcony and terrace constructions, build ups and designs.

Don’t gamble on hot works – don’t gamble on inferior materials – choose Triflex

Not only do these techniques involve a significant Health and Safety risk to operatives, and persons in the vicinity, they pose a real risk of fire to the

structure. The use of hot works can result in materials smouldering and subsequently igniting even after the flame has been extinguished. Many

insurers now require that a fire watch is maintained for a minimum of 1 hour after the cessation of hot works.

Fire can break out on most construction sites, and there are approximately 11 construction fires every day. These fires not only lead to potential

injuries and fatalities, but can be extremely disruptive and costly to the owners and clients.

Issues with hot works are largely to blame for the exponential increase in waterproofing and surfacing contractors’ insurance premiums in recent

years. Many contractors have been forced out of business, or have decided that the future lies in cold, liquid applied materials based on proven

technology.

Cold application – don’t gamble on hot worksAlthough Triflex has been manufacturing liquid applied waterproofing and surfacing

membranes for almost 30 years they can still be considered new technology when

compared with traditional and sheet applied materials.

The durability statement for the system confirms that it has been in use since

The reinforced waterproofing membrane of the Triflex BTS-P, BTS-T and BBS

waterproofing and surfacing systems for walkways, balconies and terraces

(Triflex ProTerra®) is tested and certified under ETAG 005 - Liquid Applied

Waterproofing Membranes issued by the European Organisation for Technical

Approvals (EOTA). Products are deemed fit for their intended use if they comply

with the relevant European Technical Approval.

A construction product with an ETA, can carry CE marking and can be placed on the market in any EU member state.

The Triflex BWS system is certified under BS476:Part 3 - External fire exposure roof test and achieves the highest rating - EXT.F.AA.

European standardsTriflex ProTerra® the reinforced waterproofing component of the Triflex BTS-P, BTS-T and BBS systems and Triflex ProDetail® the detail waterproofing

system for all Triflex systems for walkways, balconies and terraces have been successfully tested under the three test methods prescribed under

Root resistanceShould balcony or terrace areas need to incorporate green roof areas, all Triflex roofing systems are certified under the German FLL guidelines

System information:

The Triflex BFS cold liquid applied, waterproofing and surfacing system was developed to provide

the optimum combination of aesthetic and functional requirements for walkways, balconies and

terraces which are not over occupied premises, e.g. cantilevered structures. With three system

variants and a wide choice of colours and textures the system can be fully tailored to meet the

requirements of the project.

The system is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects and the majority of deck

constructions. The systems' exceptionally rapid cure times, totally cold application and substrate

compatibility (including asphalt) make it the first choice for areas where access is restricted and time

on site needs to be minimised.

The heavy duty system uses our unique reinforced waterproofing technology locally to provide the

optimum security for the project.

Notes:1 = Scarify, grind or lightly bead blast

Substrate Assessment

In all cases the condition and stability of the underlying substrate should beassessed prior to the commencement of work. See Substrate Testing section.

Concrete structures should be designed in accordance with BS8110/CP110.

Substrate Preparation

Refer to substrate preparation and priming schedule.

Generally:

Remove existing paint and finishes etc. by grinding.

Ensure that the prepared surface is clean, dry and free from dust, laitence,grease, oil and any other contaminants.

Apply with a lambswool roller (0.4kg/m2 min.)Rainproof after approx. 30 minutes.Can be walked upon/next coat applied after approx. 45 minutes.

Can be walked on after approx. 8 hours.

Surface Repairs and Filling

Cut out blisters and repair all minor indentations with scratch coat of Triflex CrylRS 233 or Triflex Cryl Paste. Allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour.

Fill all voids in vertical surfaces and at upstand transitions with Triflex Cryl Pasteand allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour.

Larger indentations can be filled with Triflex Cryl RS 240 (cementitioussubstrates), Triflex Cryl Mortar or Triflex Cryl Paste Mortar (non-cementitioussubstrates).

Dynamic Cracks and Dayjoints

Remove any existing filler material and fill with Triflex Cryl RS 233.

Apply Triflex Cryl R 210 (1.5kg/m2 min.) with a lambswool roller.

Roll a strip of Triflex 110g Reinforcement into the wet resin, pressing trapped airfree using the lambswool roller, ensuring a minimum 50mm overlap between thereinforcement sheets.

Apply Triflex Cryl R 210 (1.0kg/m2 min.) wet on wet to ensure full saturation ofthe fleece. Allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour.

Minimum fleece overlap either side of dynamic crack/dayjoint - 75mm.

Note: Identification of Dynamic Cracks should include a survey of the soffit(where visible).

Interface Details

Apply in accordance with standard and project specific sketch details.

General Details:

Apply Triflex ProDetail® (2.0 kg/m2 min.) with a lambswool roller.

Roll a strip of Triflex 110g Reinforcement into the wet resin, pressing trapped airfree using the lambswool roller, ensuring a minimum 50mm overlap between thereinforcement sheets.

Apply Triflex ProDetail® (1.3 kg/m2 min.) wet on wet to ensure full saturation ofthe fleece.


Can be walked on/next coat applied after approx. 45 minutes.

Complex Details:

Where due to access restrictions, or complexity of the detail, Triflex ProDetail® isnot practical:

Apply Triflex Cryl R 295 fibre reinforced resin (1.5 kg/m2 min.) with a brush andallow to cure for a minimum of 45 minutes.

Apply a further layer of Triflex Cryl R 295 fibre reinforced resin (1.5 kg/m2 min.) bybrush.

Apply Triflex Cryl RS 233 (4.0kg/m2 min.) by trowel.

Embed into the wet Triflex Cryl RS 233 a full cover of crystal quartz (0.7 - 1.2mm), coloured quartz (0.7 - 1.2mm), or basalt (1.0 - 1.6mm) (5.0kg/m2)approx. Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours, sweep away excess aggregateand vacuum clean.


Can be walked upon after approx. 1 hour.

Apply Triflex Cryl Finish 205 (0.5kg/m2 min.) using a lambswool roller.

Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours, sweep away excess aggregate and

vacuum clean.

(0.35kg/m2 min.) using a lambswool roller. Apply Triflex Micro Chips into the

wet Triflex Finish by hand or hopper spray gun. Allow to dry for a minimum of 1

hour and remove excess Micro Chips.




Expansion Joints

Consult Triflex (UK) Limited for confirmation of design details required.

Interruptions During Works

If work is interrupted for more than 12 hours, use Triflex Cleaner to clean and

reactivate the transition area.

Evaporation time: at least 20 minutes - overlay within 60 minutes.

For reinforced details, the subsequent waterproofing layers must overlap by at

least 100 mm, including the Reinforcement.

Triflex BFS




Substrate Testing

Prior to the commencement of work the Contractor must check and only proceed

if he has satisfied the following requirements.

Dimensional stability: All factors which may affect the subsequent performance of

the system e.g. failed structural elements etc. must be repaired.

Hardness: All concrete substrates, concrete repair materials, screeds and mortars

shall be cured and allowed to achieve a minimum hardness of 25N/mm2.

Moisture: Prior to overlay with Triflex systems, the equilibrium moisture content of

the substrate must not exceed 6% and 75% RH. For cementitious substrates with

higher levels of moisture (less than 10% equilibrium) refer to Triflex Pox R103.

Adhesion: Trial areas to be prepared to ensure that the System achieves a

minimum bond to the substrate of:

Concrete, concrete repair materials, screeds and mortars: 1.5N/mm2

All other substrates: 0.8N/mm2

Health and Safety

Refer to product Health and Safety data prior to using the materials.

Coverage Rates

The coverage rates given are guidelines based on smooth, level substrates.

Allowances must be made if the substrate is uneven, rough or porous.

Drying Times

The drying times stated are at +20˚C and are dependent upon weather

conditions.

Important Notes

It is the Contractors' responsibility to ensure that the substrate is suitable and that

the system is applied in all areas in accordance with Technical Data Sheets and

Application Guidelines in force at the time.

The advice we can provide on the application of our products is based on

extensive development work as well as many years of experience and is given to

the best of our knowledge. However, the wide variety of requirements for a

building under the most diverse conditions mean that it is necessary for the

Contractor to test the product for suitability in any given case. We reserve the

The Triflex BTS-P cold liquid applied, fully reinforced waterproofing and surfacing system was

developed to provide the optimum combination of aesthetic and functional requirements for

walkways, balconies and terraces over occupied premises. With three system variants and a wide

choice of colours and textures the system can be fully tailored to meet the requirements of the

project.

In all cases the condition and stability of the underlying substrate should be

assessed prior to the commencement of work. See Substrate Testing section.




Generally:


Ensure that the prepared surface is clean, dry and free from dust, laitence,

grease, oil and any other contaminants.

Priming










Note: For new cementitious materials where it is not practical to allow the

substrate to hydrate to below 6% equilibrium moisture content and 75% RH, or

for existing cementitious substrates with higher levels of moisture, Triflex Pox

R103 can be used where the equilibrium moisture content is less than 10%.

Triflex Pox R103:






Cut out blisters and repair all minor indentations with scratch coat of Triflex Cryl

RS 233 or Triflex Cryl Paste. Allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour.

Fill all voids in vertical surfaces and at upstand transitions with Triflex Cryl Paste

and allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour.

Larger indentations can be filled with Triflex Cryl RS 240 (cementitious

substrates), Triflex Cryl Mortar or Triflex Cryl Paste Mortar (non-cementitious

substrates).

Interface Details


General Details:


Roll a strip of Triflex 110g Reinforcement into the wet resin, pressing trapped air

free using the lambswool roller, ensuring a minimum 50mm overlap between the

reinforcement sheets.

Apply Triflex ProDetail® (1.3 kg/m2 min.) wet on wet to ensure full saturation of

the fleece.



Complex Details:

Where due to access restrictions, or complexity of the detail, Triflex ProDetail® is

not practical:

Apply Triflex Cryl R 295 fibre reinforced resin (1.5 kg/m2 min.) with a brush and

allow to cure for a minimum of 45 minutes.

Apply a further layer of Triflex Cryl R 295 fibre reinforced resin (1.5 kg/m2 min.)

by brush.



Note: Where details may be subject to mechanical damage, consult Triflex (UK)

Limited for mechanical protection solutions.

Apply an even layer of Triflex ProTerra® (2.0 kg/m2 min.) with a lambswool roller.

The Triflex BWS cold liquid applied, fully reinforced waterproofing and surfacing system has

minimum 19mm marine ply, with joists at maximum 400mm centres. Deck to be

mechanically fixed with countersunk fixings at 100mm centres along all joists and

noggins, with all joints between boards filled with PVA adhesive to create a

homogenous, rigid deck.

advantage of using our highly advanced, exceptionally fast curing PMMA resin technology for

all layers of the system. The use of ultra fast cure technology minimises access restrictions and

allows maximum productivity on site.

The Triflex BBS cold liquid applied, fully reinforced waterproofing and surfacing system was

developed to allow more choice in the design of balconies, walkways and terraces. The majority

of Triflex systems are designed to be the final aesthetic finish, however the Triflex BBS allows

alternative coverings to be used including:

The system is based on the advanced Triflex ProTerra® ETA certified waterproofing membrane

and is particularly suited to buried applications due to its high levels of impact resistance and

resistance to standing water.

Note - Should balcony or terrace areas need to incorporate green roof areas, all Triflex roofing

systems are certified under the German FLL guidelines which have been the only source of

reliable information for designers of green roofs for the last 15 years. For further information

with a safe anti-skid surface, rather than ultimate structural protection.

Where budget constraints preclude the use of the higher durability, thicker layer Triflex

BFS system, the Triflex BAS may be an option. The system is typically used on high

quality pre-cast concrete units which may become slippery when wet, or for covered

applications where ingress control rather than full waterproofing is required.

The Triflex TSS cold liquid applied, waterproofing and surfacing system for stairs and

stairwells was developed to provide a secure solution to areas which are often left

unprotected or are treated with low quality, paint type coatings.

The system combines the performance benefits of the heavy duty Triflex BFS waterproofing

and surfacing system on the treads and stairwells with proprietary edge nosings to provide a

long term solution. The anti-skid properties of the system greatly reduce the potential for

accidents and claims.

The system is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects, and with its

exceptionally rapid cure times and totally cold application, it is the first choice for stairs and

stairwells where access is restricted and time on site needs to be minimised.

For applications where insulation is a specific requirement or would be beneficial, there are a number of possibilities for incorporating insulation

with Triflex walkway, balcony and terrace systems:

Insulated decks with structural concrete topping

Where the client requires the final finish to be a Triflex system, the preferred method of construction is to incorporate a non-compressible, rigid,

extruded polystyrene insulation within the construction.

The typical build up would be:

Structural deck

300mu polyethylene based Damp Proof Membrane (taped joints)

Extruded polystyrene insulation to meet required U-values

300mu polyethylene based Damp Proof Membrane (taped joints)

75mm C35 structural reinforced concrete overlay

Triflex waterproofing, surfacing and protection system

Our seamless systems avoid the need for joints, seams and fixings, eliminating the weak spots and providing the client with a totally homogenous,

waterproofing and surfacing solution to protect their investment. Our range of systems allow accommodation of virtually all walkway, balcony and

terrace constructions, build ups and designs.

Timber decks with insulation between the joists

For applications where the deck construction is timber, insulation can be incorporated within the joists and waterproofing and surfacing provided

using either the Triflex BWS - page 59 or the Triflex BTS-T systems - page 73.

The specific requirements for timber decks should be incorporated at the design stage:

Deck must be constructed from minimum 19mm marine ply, with joists at maximum 400mm centres. Deck to be mechanically fixed with

countersunk fixings at 100mm centres along all joists and noggins, with all joints between boards filled with PVA adhesive to create a


Inverted decks

A further alternative is to use the Triflex BBS fast curing, liquid applied, fully reinforced, buried waterproofing system for walkways, balconies and

terraces - page 87.

The system is designed for buried applications and the insulation can therefore be placed on top of the membrane with a suitable wearing course

of pavers or structural concrete.

The typical build up would be:

Structural deck

Triflex BBS waterproofing system

300g/m2 non-woven polyester fleece slip layer

Extruded polystyrene insulation to meet required U-values

300g/m2 non-woven polyester fleece filtration layer

Paving on supports or structural concrete

Composite insulated deck systems

Other insulated constructions may be possible utilising thinner layer toppings applied directly on top of the insulation to act as a load bearer and

substrate for application of the Triflex waterproofing and surfacing system.

Maintenance and Care



Triflex -Walkway, balcony and terrace systems

Maintenance and CareGeneral

Triflex walkway, balcony and terrace waterproofing, surfacing and protection

systems are designed to avoid the requirement for regular maintenance as far as

possible. As a matter of good housekeeping, it is recommended that the Triflex

systems are inspected annually - ideally just before winter.

General maintenance

• Remove any debris from the deck area, and all items which could potentially

cause damage to the System.

• Check and clean outlets, drainage points, gutters, downspouts etc. and ensure

that all rainwater goods are working effectively.

• Carefully remove any plant growth.

General inspection

• Check all details visually to ensure a sound bond to substrate.

• Check the installed System for any signs of mechanical or chemical damage.

• Check the soffit where visible for evidence of water ingress, wet patches, water

staining etc.

• Check other building components e.g. ballustrades, surface mounted details,

walls, threshold details etc. for soundness.

Any observations that require attention to the installed Triflex Systems should be

reported to the Triflex Approved Contractor who installed the System.

Repair

Areas of mechanical damage should be repaired by the original installer as soon

as possible after they become evident.

The Triflex approved contractor should consult Triflex (UK) Limited for approved

repair methods.

Additions and removals

Prior to additions or removals taking place which may affect the integrity of the

installed Triflex system, Triflex (UK) Limited to be contacted for approved methods.

General protection

Where Triflex treated areas are likely to suffer damage or contamination from

other trades during subsequent or other works, suitable precautions should be

taken to protect the installed System.

Cleaning

Should the walkway, balcony or terrace require cleaning, we recommend the

following methods.

Manually washing down

Manually brush away any loose particles, dirt, dust etc.

Mop the Triflex treated area with a solution of warm water and approved

detergent. For stubborn areas of dirt, gently brush the surface while it is still wet.

Pressure washing

Manually brush away any loose particles, general dust, dirt etc.

Ensure all outlets, drainage points, gutters and downspouts are clear and free

from any blockage.

Apply a cold or warm water pressure wash with approved detergent in solution.

The head of the water lance should be kept at least 500mm away from the Triflex

surface at all times and the pressure should be restricted to less than 1500psi.

Preferably leave the detergent solution on the surface for approximately

15 minutes.

For stubborn areas of dirt, gently brush or mop the surface after the detergent

has been applied.

Rinse the surface with clean, cold water. The head of the water lance should be

kept at least 500mm away from the Triflex surface at all times and the pressure

should be restricted to less than 1500psi.

Squeegee excess water from the surface to outlets, gullies etc.

Floor scrubbing machines

Subject to prior approval of equipment and methods by Triflex (UK) Limited, floor

scrubbing machines with single large diameter heads may be used to clean the

Triflex systems.

Mechanical scrubber driers

Subject to prior approval of equipment and methods by Triflex (UK) Limited,

mechanical scrubber driers may be used to clean the Triflex systems.

Important notes for all cleaning methods:

Water temperature should not exceed 50°C

Only detergents or degreasants approved by Triflex (UK) Limited should

be used.

Cleaning methods and materials not in accordance with Triflex guidelines may

affect any warranty.

De-icing

Triflex walkway, balcony and terrace waterproofing and surfacing systems are

resistant to common de-icing materials including rock salt, Calcium Chloride

Flakes and Prilled Urea.

Calcium Chloride Flakes and Prilled Urea are recommended as these dissolve and

do not leave an unsightly, dirty residue on the deck.

For approval of other de-icing chemicals please contact Triflex (UK) Limited.

Important note:

De-icing methods and materials not in accordance with Triflex guidelines may

affect any warranty.

The advice we can provide on the cleaning and maintenance of our products is

based on many years of experience and is given to the best of our knowledge.

However, the wide variety of requirements for a building under the most diverse

conditions mean that it is necessary for the maintenance contractor or individual

to test the method or product for suitability in any given case. We reserve the
