Clinical data:“A New Concept in Fracture Immobilization” (Paul A. Dale, MD, James T. Bronk, Michael E. O’Sullivan, F.R.C.S.I., Edmund Y. S. Chao, PhD., and Patrick J. Kelly, M.D.) shows the benefits of pressurized braces on healing in the lower leg. with our aircell technology. The pulsating actions of the aircells only work when combined with the supportprovided by the semi-rigid shells. The combination of support with the pulsating action of the aircells promotes a faster edema reduction, thus promoting pain relief, patient compliance, and faster healing.

Front Panel The semi-rigid shell used by Ossur is not strong enough to prevent buckling at the ankle area. With the addition of theSemi-Rigid Shell "rubber" crease on the front panel, the Ossur Walker will allow the ankle to bend and prevent appropriate support

Rocker Sole: The Rebound Air Walker lacks the four sections that permit normal walking ability. Instead, patients will find thatFull rocker plate to enhance gait dynamics. they have a "heel strike" section and a "toe-off" section with nothing in between. There is no "mid-stance" section for balance

and no "rock-through" section for a more natural gait.Though the sole is made of a lighter plastic, this material does not provide shock absorbency and has less grip than theg g p , p y g p"rubber" sole on the Aircast Walker.

Counter Argument: The Aircast Walker is composed of four sections: Heel-strike, mid-stance, rock-through, and toe-off. All of thesesections combine to form the proper curvature that permits normal walking for a given foot size. The Aircast Walking Braces have an optimized rocker sole which offers a more natural gait to the patient, and less hip differential, which was a cause of complaint from some patients.

Straps: Both the Aircast and Ossur Walkers have three (3) straps.Front straps for easy adjustment. The Ossur Walker uses Elasticized Velcro® straps which fluctuates the leg muscles during gait and prevents

a good grip around the limb, leading to shear movements.The uneven distribution of straps on the Ossur Walker focuses pressure only on the site of the strap, which can lead to "window edema" along the limb. There is also difficulty in adjusting the top strap: a patient and/or provider will need to feed the strap through the shell which is very difficult and time consuming.

Counter Argument: The combination of the Aircast strap locations and the front panel allow for the best circumferential compression.The pressure from the strap is distributed evenly throughout the front panel.

Foot Bed: The toe bumper can create an issue for a patient who is not fitted for a correct sized boot and/or who does not apply the AirToe bumper Walker appropriately (by deflating the aircells prior to fitting the brace and by placing the heel back into the walker). Both

situations provide issues if the toe rubs/bangs against the toe bumper. Also, the foot does not sit down into the foot bed.Rather, the thicker sole places the foot above the walker shell walls. This lack of support and protection can be an issue forpatients who have Forefoot and Midfoot injuries and Bunionectomies.

Counter Argument: Aircast Walker foot beds accommodate a swollen foot and gives ample room for dressing

Compliance: With regard to Compliance, Ossur DOES NOT offer or have the option for the Brace-Lok™ found on the XP and XP DiabeticShoe-like for optimal compliance Walkers. Practitioners can monitor patient compliance, which has been proven to be crucial in enhancing patient healing.

Ease of Use It is quite difficult to take the brace on and off. You must remove the front panel by “popping” out the airpump.Once the patient has been fitted in the boot, they must then try to “pop” the airpump back into designated hole in the front panel. The airpump must fit into the front panel snuggly otherwise the front panel will pop-off!

Counter Argument: The MaxTrax liner has a "forefoot flap" that protects the foot from the ankle straps rubbing against the skin.The OVATION liner has a gap in this area exposing the skin to the ankle strap.The MaxTrax Walking Brace comes with removable pads to accommodate various levels of edema aroundthe ankle joint.

Straps: The OVATION Walking Brace has 5 straps similar to the MaxTrax boot. The 3 straps on the lower leg can be removed and adjusted Five (5) easy to use straps to meet the patient's needs.

The straps on the OVATION brace are too short. Measuring 21.5" in length, they do not allow for adjustability and may pose an issuefor patients with larger calves.With 6 straps, the MaxTrax walker offers a unique strapping feature that provides 3 options for strapping andsecuring the ankle joint area so that patient and/or physician may customize the walker for maximum comfort and fit.

Counter Argument: The straps on the MaxTrax are 25" in length; allowing for more adjustability if needed.Both braces have swiveling D-Rings but only the MaxTrax allows for the different fitting options, "criss-cross" or parallel strapping.

Inner Sole: OVATION uses a thinner, denser foam which doesn't provide a lot of cushioning.The MaxTrax Walking Brace has a cushioned inner sole intended to absorb impact of heel strike to improvepatient comfort during ambulation.

Foot Bed:MaxTrax is designed with a wider foot bed (4.5" wide around the malleoli compared to OVATION, 4") for increased stability

Rocker Sole: When ambulatory, the OVATION rocker sole does provide a natural gait. HOWEVER, when standing, there is no "mid-stance"Contoured rocker bottom sole enables a section for balance. Therefore your leg is thrown into hyper-extension to keep yourself upright.
