Do not enter but turn across the car park and road into Lloyds Coppice. Look for the remains of Madeley Wood Hall and a Pumping Engine. Distance 4 km • Time 2 hours 2 The Silkin Way A walk along the old railway track to the River Severn Walk across the road and left down hill on to The Silkin Way, through the tunnel and down to the Riverbank. Take a look at the China Museum complex on the way back. Distance 6 km Time 2 hours 3 Hay Inclined Plane Industrial History tour Across the road and left to Blists Hill Victorian Town. Again down hill to start then around the back of the Blists Hill Museum site to the Hay Inclined Plane. This was used for lifting small barges from the canal at the bottom up to the higher level. Return down the side of the Inclined Plane and then right back along the Silkin Way. Distance 4 km • Time 1 1 2 hrs Walks from The Square 4 Ironbridge Riverside Ironbridge houses and lanes Turn right along The Wharfage and then quickly right up Severn Bank. Working your way up and around the hillside you will get a real feel for the buildings and views of historic Ironbridge. Descend to The Wharfage by Lincoln Hill, then left to the Iron Bridge itself. Distance 2 km • Time 1 hour 5 The Golden Ball Ironbridge houses and Bedlam Furnaces From the car park turn left along High St, into Waterloo St., then turn left up the steps at the side of the car park. Go right on Madeley Road to the Goldon Ball pub. Turn right down through Madeley Wood and to the remains of the Bedlam Furnaces. Turn right back along the riverbank. This leaflet describes a variety of walks and cycle rides from each of the main car parks in the Gorge. There are of course many other footpaths, bridleways and roads in the area. Look out particularly for the marked routes, such as the South Telford Way, which will allow you to search out both the industrial heritage of the area and the modern countryside areas. Why not hop on the Gorge Connect bus! Operating every weekend and Bank Holiday Monday from the beginning of April to the end of October, the bus serves the Ironbridge Gorge area as well as Telford town centre and Telford Central Railway Station. Bus timetables and further tourist information can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre in the Tollhouse at the southern end of the Iron Bridge. The Ironbridge Gorge Museums While in the Gorge try to visit some of the Ironbridge Gorge museums. The Museum Passport ticket is the most cost effective way to see as many of them as you wish. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Most museums are within walking distance of each other or are served by the WH1 Gorge Connect bus service during weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays from April to October. Work your way around to the left, then go uphill through one of the alleyways and turn right along Hodge Bower. Then back downhill round to the church before returning down Severn Bank. Distance 2 km • Time 1 hour Walks from Station Yard 7 Severn Valley Way A flat route following the track of the old Severn Valley Railway From the Iron Bridge walk back through the car park and along the track –signed Severn Valley Way and Route 45. Keep right through Jackfield, look for old railway sidings, a section on the road and the Tile Museum. The route here is subject to landslip and the road is quite a roller coaster. Past Maws Craft Centre turn left down to the river and the Boat Inn, then turn left back up the side of the craft centre and back to Ironbridge. Distance 5 km • Time 1 1 2 hours 8 Benthall Woods A hillside walk, can be muddy Walk west away from the car park parallel to the river along the old railway track. Turn left up into the woods and continue right up to the crest. You will see the work that the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust is doing to maintain the woods. At the top turn left and return on the high level. There is much evidence of the mining that went on in this whole area for hundreds of years. Return downhill by a convenient path and turn right back to the bridge. Distance 6 km • Time 2 hours February 2007

9 Dale End ParkA flat riverside walk

From the rear of the car park turn right andwalk along the riverside to the Edward AlbertBridge, turn and walk back through the park.

10 Shropshire Hills ViewA longer walk through Coalbrookdale

From the car park cross the Buildwas Roadturn left and the take the first right intoStation Road. Walk through toCoalbrookdale – site of the Museum of Iron,Enginuity and the Darby Houses. Turn leftuphill and left again into the Arboretum,keep through Cinder Hill woods to cross aminor road and walk around the edge ofStrethill Lodge. Here there are excellentviews of the south Shropshire Hills. Returndownhill along the route of an old tramway,across the railway and down to theBuildwas Road to complete the walk.

11 Lincoln Hill and the RotundaWoodland walk with a steep descentof 209 steps

Turn right out of the car park onto BuildwasRoad. Take the second road on the left(Paradise) alongside the shop. Keep to theright and walk on paths up to the top ofLincoln Hill. The brick base here is theremains of the Rotunda. The view over thefence down to the Ironbridge is magnificentin all seasons. Descend back to the roadand car park via the 209 steps from the backof the viewing platform.

12 River bank & Dale End ParkA flat walk through the park

Take the path to the side of the public toiletsat the back of the car park, then walkthrough the park.

13 Dale Coppice and Lincoln HillAn excellent view but lots of stepsdown

Walk to the road and turn left. Take the firstright into Paradise, immediately before theshop. Walk up the road, taking the rightfork into the woods. Walk right throughDale Coppice and at Church Road take aright then left into the area of The SabbathWalks. Turn right up the bank to the topand then turn right back across the roadand continue to the Rotunda. Afteradmiring the view of Ironbridge descendthe 209 steps and return to The Wharfage.

14 The Iron Bridge The Iron Bridge and part of the town

Walk to the road and turn right along TheWharfage, as far as the Iron Bridge. Walkback 40m and turn up Severn Bank.Continue to walk upwards and take aconvenient alley to explore the hillside.There are many interesting houses andfine views, take your time and explore.Return down Lincoln Hill to The Wharfage.

15 Silkin Way and IronbridgeA gentle gradient down into the Gorge and along theriverbanks

Cross the road from the car park and turn left onto the SilkinWay Cycle route (NCN route 55). Follow the Silkin Way to itsend at Coalport Bridge. Over the bridge and walk downsteps onto the Severn Valley Way (NCN Route 45). Ride onto the Iron Bridge passing the Maws Craft Centre and theTile Museum. Walk over the Iron Bridge and turn right on theroad keeping alongside the river (do not go over the newJackfield Bridge). Just before the China Museum turn left ona ramp taking you up onto the Silkin Way. Turn left andpedal back uphill to the car park.

Ride through the car park, away from the Iron Bridge andalong the Severn Valley Way. Keep on NCN Route 45 untilyou have to walk up some steps and reach the CoalportBridge, turn left over the bridge, then left again on NCNRoute 55. Ride straight ahead to come out on the road bythe Brewery Inn. Ride past the pub and continue past theChina Museum complex keeping left at the next fork andback to Ironbridge. Walk over the bridge to the start point.

Cycle From The Wharfage and Dale End

Turn right out of the car park into Ironbridge. Cross the IronBridge and turn left through the car park. The ride along theSevern Valley Way can then be followed from ride 16.
