Abstract: Walīd Ghulmīyah was a Lebanese musician, composer, conductor, publisher and educator.

An unrelenting supporter of the arts, Ghulmīyah played a leading role in advancing music and art

education in Lebanon and the region. Dr. Ghulmīyah headed a number of national art educational

projects, including the establishment of the Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra and reviving the

Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music after the civil war. This collection is primarily

composed of music sheets of Ghulmīyah’s works, drafts of his various symphonic writings, including

different versions and scoring of the six symphonies, which he composed for various occasions,

including festivals, films, plays, radio and TV programs. The collection also contains an extensive

amount of press clippings covering his activities and achievements, as well as some personal & official

material in various formats: correspondence, photographs, audio-visual recordings and posters for his

concerts.

Source: The Walīd Ghulmīyah collection was donated by Dr. Ghulmīyah's widow, Mrs. Ilham Nadda

Ghulmīyah, between June 2017 and fall of 2018 in two installments.

Access Restrictions: : The collection can be used within the premises of the Archives and Special

Collections Department, Jafet Memorial Library, American University of Beirut.

Scope and Content

The Walīd Ghulmīyah collection chiefly consists of music sheets and press clippings covering his

professional life between 1962 and 2011. The music sheets include his six symphonies (al-Qadissiya,

al-Mutanabbi, al-Yarmuk, ash-Shahid, al-Mawakib, and al-Fajr); as well as his contributions to

various forms of the performing arts: films (music composer of al-Qadissiya film, Beirut ya Beirut,

etc.), festival productions (Baalbek, Ehden & Byblos, etc.), plays and shows (Sit al-Kul and Caracalla

Dance Group shows) & tunes composed for radio & TV shows. Several magazines and press clippings

are available in the collection that cover Mr. Ghulmīyah’s extensive career. The collection also

contains some 30 cassette tapes and recordings of Ghulmīyah’s various symphonies, as well as

interviews with the musician and other artists; and a collection of articles, speeches & lectures by Dr.

Ghulmīyah on music heritage & culture in Lebanon. In addition, the collection features over 70 posters

and around 130 photos documenting performances and Ghulmīyah’s meetings with fellow artists

(Local, Arab & Foreign, i.e. Zaki Nassif, Yoyoma, June Andersen) and other photos reflecting his

acquaintance with prominent political figures (Lebanese President Ilyas al Hrawi, Prime Ministers

Rafic al-Hariri, PM Fouad Sanyura, and French President Jacques Chirac). In addition, there is a small

collection of personal documents, including condolence letters and various correspondence from

fellow musicians and colleagues sent to Mrs. Ilham after Dr. Ghulmīyah’s passing in 2011. The

collection is salient for scholars interested in the study of social history and culture, as well as music

publishing history.

Biographical Sketch

1938, April 14 Walīd Ghulmīyah was born in Marjaʻyun, South Lebanon.

1958 Ghulmīyah aced his exam at the American University of Beirut’s

Music Department where he studied under Salvador Arnita.

1958 An unfortunate sports injury put an end to his violin playing days,

motivating Ghulmīyah to switch his focus to music composition.

1967 Ghulmīyah won a Canadian prize for his piece “Sir al-Hayat al-

Ghamidah.”

1970 Walīd married Ms. Ilham Nadda and returned to the States to continue

his studies at the University of Kansas.

1974 Ghulmīyah graduated with an MF in music composition and orchestra

conducting and a PhD in musicology from the University of Wichita.

His dissertation title was: “Music composition in the Middle East”.

1974 Ghulmīyah was appointed as an art consultant for musical and folkloric

research at the Iraq Ministry of Media.

1976 Ghulmīyah was appointed member of the International Musicological

Society.

1978 Ghulmīyah was appointed member of The Arab Academy of Music.

1983- 1984 Ghulmīyah accompanied Fairuz to Jordan & Australia, to lead the

orchestra

1986 Ghulmīyah was appointed on the board of the Lebanese National

Higher Conservatory of Music.

1991 Ghulmīyah was appointed Chairman of the board & director of the

Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music.

1991-1993 Ghulmīyah was appointed a member of the committee for the

restructuring of the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts and the

formation of the Ministry of Culture & Higher Education.

1992 Ghulmīyah opened several music centers in different Lebanese towns

and cities: Zahle, Beirut, Tripoli, Aley, Saida, among others.

1993 Ghulmīyah received the Lebanese National Medal (order of

Knighthood) from President Ilyas al-Hrawi and was presented with the

highest honor, The Order of Paul and Peter, from Patriarch Ignatius IV

of Antioch.

1994 Ghulmīyah further upgraded the National Conservatory and

established the Computer Laboratory of Music.

1995 Ghulmīyah set up a publishing house at the Conservatory for all

scientific music research and publications.

1999, November 18 Ghulmīyah launched the Lebanese National Orchestra in a concert at

AUB.

2000, July 27 Ghulmīyah established the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental

Arabic Music.

2000 In association with the Internal Security Forces, Ghulmīyah opened a

Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music branch within the

Rumyeh prison.

2000 Ghulmīyah was appointed as the Chairman of the United Nation’s

National Music Committee.

2004 The Zaki Nassif Music Program at the American University of Beirut

was established with the help of Dr. Ghulmīyah.

2006 Ghulmīyah received the Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to

the Republic of Austria, presented to him by Austrian Ambassador in

Lebanon, Eva Maria Ziegler, during an event at St. Joseph’s Church

near Monnot.

2010 Ghulmīyah was awarded the Cambridge Certificate for Outstanding

Professional Achievement from the International Biographical Centre.

2011, June 7 After a long struggle with illness, Dr. Walīd Ghulmīyah passed away.

2011 Posthumously Ghulmīyah was awarded the National Order of the

Cedar, Commander Grade, by the Lebanese Government.
