Caused
Written by: Muhamad Hafizuddin bin Mat Zuki
About 1000 people were joining the peaceful awareness walk on the 18th July
2012 at Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. The event was significant to protest against the
development at that place. The project of constructing a fence that stretch the hill
had create damage to Bukit Kiara as the trees being chopped off and even some of
the trails were also damaged. In fact, it also had caused water pollution there.
Apparently, the authorities had claimed that the construction was in order to
demarcate the area as well as to reinforce the security there.
The walk was done by people as they took onto a few trails there coming up
from the pond at the Lembah Kiara Park. A few Singapore’s mountain bikers were
also there to show their supports as it is one of the favorite trails for most of them
and it is also known as one of the best mountain biking trails by most of them.
In fact, the walk was also attended by The Star Executive Director and also
their Group Chief Director as a sign of their support to the event. Signatures were
collected to submit a petition to the Housing and Local Government Minister wishing
for the construction to be stopped and also requesting frequent dialogues with the
stakeholders as well as completing the gazzettement of the hill as a permanent
reserved forest.
Apart from that, a few non-governmental organization also playing their role in
showing their effort to save and preserve the park in the best way possible. People’s
voices were also collected. Among them were the frequent-park goers, people from
the neighbourhood and also the expatriates. In the end, they had come to an
agreement that Bukit Kiara was a great place for them and strongly oppose the
construction that had been done. Therefore, action should be taken as soon as
possible.
