Held in the picturesque Martinborough Square, the fair, reportedly the largest of its type in Australasia, comprises over 480 stalls selling artwork, crafts, clothing, food and a host of other top quality products.

the vintage Aviator’s rare and diverse collection of airworthy WW1 Fighter Aircraft can be seen on display at Hood Aerodrome, South road in Masterton from 10am to 4pm in the weekends until end of March 2012.

Balloons Over Wairarapa Balloons from around New Zealand take part in this four day balloon extravaganza - one of New Zealand’s most spectacular events! Balloons launch each day at around 7.15am in a breathtaking display. this year’s first event on the morning of March 8 will be a special tribute flight to remember those who were lost on January 7 this year.

the recently completed track upgrade of the rimutaka

rail trail has added width to the narrowest section of track which now provides users comfort and safety on a truly multi-use track.

the 18 km rimutaka rail trail is popular with walkers, dog-walkers, and mountain bikers. to cater for the wide variety of users, a three kilometre section of the track and bridges between the car park and Cross Creek were widened to allow two parties to pass each other safely.

"We have had some very good feed back from the public already" said Craig Harrison, project manager for Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Wairarapa. " A one hour walk or half hour bike trip to Cross Creek for a picnic then home the same way is going to be a popular option."

the track follows an historic rail route that was established in 1878 to carry passengers from Upper Hutt to Featherston. the innovative Fell mountain railway system was used to pull trains up the steep slope of the rimutaka Incline. It operated until the rimutaka rail tunnel opened in 1955.

the rimutaka rail trail can be accessed via rimutaka Forest Park from Featherston or Pakuratahi Forest from Upper Hutt.

snippets...Helen Melser loves experimenting with olives. After she and her

husband Derek planted a small olive grove on the outskirts of Masterton 13 years ago, Helen says she always knew she would be producing something more than just olive oil.

“there are lots of wonderful olive groves in the Wairarapa producing wonderful oils, so I always knew we’d create something different here. I like doing things out of the ordinary – things that are a bit surprising.”

Helen pickles and cures olives that are harvested from 12 varieties of trees on her property and processes selected leaves from the grove for Elaia Olive Leaf tea and Olive Leaf Powder both of which have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti- parasitical and antiseptic qualities.

“It is an energizing, refreshing tea with lots of flavor,” she says. “An extract from olive leaves is now included in many pharmaceutical preparations especially for prevention and relief of colds and flus.”

Helen also uses imported greek kalamata olives she pits by hand to make dessert olives. She cures them in a red wine, pomegranate molasses and balsamic vinegar syrup and loves seeing the reaction of people trying them for the first time.

“I sell them at the markets and at first people are a little hesitant to try them but as soon as they do their faces just light up. they are so surprised by the taste – pleasantly surprised.”

their popularity has also travelled further afield than New Zealand. One of Helen’s two sons living in France is now making and

selling a version of her recipe under the label of Douceur’s d’Olives (sweet olives).

In addition, Helen uses kalamata olives to make olive chutney, tapenade and conserves and regularly travels the world’s olive hot spots such as Syria and greece to learn more about the fruit and gather ideas for making new and surprising recipes. In fact after Wairarapa Lifestyle caught up with her she was preparing to travel to greece to visit Kalamata and meet the producers of the olives she uses, as well as meet with representatives at the World Institute of the Olive tree in France to discuss the benefits of the olive leaf and the latest research.

Along weekend in greytown in Easter 2011 was all it took for Karen and David

Musk to spark the idea that the gracious victorian town was the perfect place to create their vision - a place to live and work in a positive thriving community. Scanning the lists at local real estate agents, they saw that 132 Main Street was for sale, a delightful building with both living space and a shop with prominent street frontage.

So plans were made, negotiating began, and they returned to Dunedin, sold their home and business and in January 2012 moved their lives to greytown.

karenmusk.com is the latest venture for the husband and wife team, with a lot of the clothes made Karen on the property, many of them are one offs. these are complemented by other labels such as Leslie Herbert , and ritual labels, (both NZ made), p j jeans and Ketz-Ke, all labels not available elsewhere in the area.

the couple are really excited about their new venture and life in the Wairarapa, but have been so busy getting the shop ready they haven’t had much time to explore a lot of the region yet, however they plan to be here for a long time and will eventually find the time to discover the treasures of the Wairarapa.

is back after 23 years. the first woman to be crowned Miss golden Shears was Miss Janine Maroulis in 1971. touring the country in the lead up to the Miss New Zealand title, Janine was given a carton of cigarettes each week by sponsor Cameo. How times have changed.

And now it’s 2012. Wanting to find a unique way of showcasing both local talent and

local businesses the organisers are bringing it back with a whole new flavour that’s not

the winner of Miss Wairarapa 2012 will be an ambassador for the Wairarapa region and community, supporting local events and her chosen charity, socialising, making public appearances, undergoing professional training and taking part in fashion shoots during her reign. She will also have the opportunity to represent and win Miss Universe NZ at an international level in Wellington in May.

Aratoi - celebrating a decade

ten years ago, the final stone was laid of a brand new Wairarapa museum and gallery

complex. Aratoi has since become a popular and respected regional arts facility, and it’s celebrating this milestone anniversary with a series of events, and an exhibition called Looking Back: Celebrating Aratoi’s 10th Birthday. this traces the history of Aratoi and its predecessor the Wairarapa Arts Centre, through photographs and archive materials.

geoff Walker is a well-known local photographer, and over the past 18 months he has been pursuing his current holy grail – the iconic Wairarapa woolshed.

geoff, who has won many awards for his photographs, traveled extensively throughout the region to capture these images of sheds, the shearers and the rural environment they work in. the exhibition is a dynamic

celebration of this hub of rural life, and tells a powerful Wairarapa story.

Painting the view: English Watercolours 1790-1860 transports us to a different facet of rural life: that of England and Europe three centuries ago. this touring exhibition from te Papa features 31 scenes of farm, coastal, and street life by artists including John Constable, thomas gainsborough and John ruskin.

the works have a fresh, immediate feel, probably because many would have been captured on the spot using the newly invented premixed paints, which opened up the possibility of painting outside the studio for the first time. During this era, sketching trips became popular for both professional and amateur artists, who ranged further afield into previously inaccessible areas thanks to improved roads and communications. Watercolour painting became established in England, and the landscape genre reached its greatest sophistication during this period.

Masterquilters, a group of quilting and crafting enthusiasts from throughout the region, has responded to the landscape in their own unique way with a themed exhibition called Between the rivers. Highlights include the results of a challenge called ‘A Walk in the Park’, and work by people aged 18 years and under.

It’s a shame that early mornings have such a bad rep – they’re actually quite a nice time of the day. Having missed many over the

years I’m pleased to be standing in Carterton at 6.45am. I’m going up in the world...my first hot air balloon ride and I’m lucky to be with the crew from ‘tanswell’. today’s competition is to drop a streamer in the centre of the main street roundabout.

I love the low tech-ness of this sport, the wicker basket still made the same way they always have been in Somerset. the equipment comes out quickly, the old sofa cushions that have been stuffed in the basket to pad the gas cyclinders get chucked aside and John and company get on with it. the balloon is on the ground spread out, basket on its side and connected. Fan comes out and we hold the balloon open as the blast of air rushes in, then with what feels like very little effort the burner is on and the balloon is upright, eager to get with the others. A quick “you can get in” from John and before you can say “get over it” we’re over it....it being Carterton. We’ve missed the roundabout target but John lobs the two streamers out anyway and they hit the roof of a big building.

gentle, gentle. there’s no feeling of great speed but we’re moving along nicely, thank you. I see hidden parts of Carterton I just don’t see each day as I auto pilot down the main street – subdivisions, swimming pools, gardens, tidiness actually. All looking good from up here Carterton.

John has a map detailing where horses, sheep and cattle are – we’re to try and avoid them. Specially pigs who I learn (interesting) can’t look up so, freak out when they see the shadow from the balloon. I try to make this fact relevant and local by pointing out the Premier Bacon Factory. Once pigs get there there’s definitely no looking up or turning back.

I can see you all in your jarmies and dressing gowns. Kids are excited but so are the grown ups. I wave more than Prince William did when he came but that’s just because I am excited and, after all, for me it’s a novelty.

rabbits or maybe hares dash off, then stop, unable to get away from our shadow. I can see your rows of cabbages, even dahlias, and the now yellowing trees. It’s warm and sunny and sun toasts my back. the tararuas look Sunday sleepy with a little scarf of white low cloud, just a line. the view, like the valley is enormous, I see Lake Wairarapa. Everyone in the region should see the valley from up here...it’s bold and grand, just like you’d hope it would be.

We’re heading to greytown where I live so I’m dead chuffed. John asks me where I live and after we’ve gone right over the combine harvester devastating the maize I look down Main Street, excited by the fact it’s all so familiar. I can see not just the crop of grey

pumpkins, but the small splash of orange ones about to be picked up and “souped” at some stage.

I phone home and tell them we’re over North road, I never expected this and Sarah, my daughter, is very excited. So quickly I can see my house and the car driving right underneath us going past us, the wrong way. the sun is so strong they can not tell the colour of the balloon. Sunny Boy, the spectacular star of this festival, is just beside us, people are thrilled and surprised. It’s like someone has delivered a massive Christmas decoration to greytown.

A quick call to redirect the whanau and I can see Sarah waving and as we lightly descend into a paddock in Humphries Street she runs across to us. I guess it’s not everyday your mum comes down from the sky. good morning Earthlings.

the Sunny Boy team, lots of them, arrive. He is walked away from the backyard of the house he landed in, as though he’d come round to borrow a cup of sugar. His team have laid out a massive blanket so he can have a lie down gently in the sun. He has to be protected from kiwi grass, biosecurity when he gets back to the USA is strict. Local kids, including our neighbour Campbell, have great fun squashing out the air from the big boy.

I don’t feel deflated. I walk round the corner and home in the now hot autumn sun.

Wairarapa’s annual balloon fiesta is shaping up to be bigger than seen in many years, as balloonists from around the country prepare to band together to pay tribute to the 11 lives lost in the January 7 ballooning tragedy in Carterton.

the decision to go ahead with the 4 day fiesta, with lift off in a tribute flight on March 8, was made with the support of the victims’ families.

More than 30 balloonists are expected to take part, many of whom have never flown in the festival before, but have been drawn this year by solidarity and a need to pay respect.

the event, which long ago etched its place in the Wairarapa events calendar, brings a spectacle of colour as blasts of heat transform lifeless pieces of fabric into engineless machines of beauty.Thanks to organisers of Trust House Balloons Over Wairarapa and John Clifton and his family in ‘Tanswell’ for making this flight possible.

Celebrate the joy of reading and the joy of books

Expect a few giggles when actress and tv and radio personality turned author Jaquie Brown headlines at this year’s Yarns in

Barns: Wairarapa Festival of reading. Jaquie will come to the region for the 10 day festival beginning

on May 25, to talk about her new book I’m not fat, I’m pregnant. “Jaquie is renowned for her sharp wit and ability to parody

herself, as was so clearly evident in the fabulous Jaquie Brown Diaries television show,” says festival director David Hedley, of Hedley’s Bookshop in Masterton.

“Now audiences will be able to discover another side to Jaquie with the release of her new book about being pregnant and becoming a mother … which of course is written in a, humorous manner and provides practical advice, but also showcases her talents as a writer.”

the festival was initially established by local booksellers, publishers and librarians to take reading and the joy of reading books back out into the Wairarapa community. Now over a decade later it remains true to its roots.

“the Yarns in Barns Festival of reading was originally designed to engage with the community about the joy of reading books,” says David. “It was made to appeal to a wide range of people, not just the literary hardcore. Over the years it has seen memorable events such as poetry readings held in a vineyard, writers’ workshops and comedy shows held in a woolshed. this year is expected to be bigger with an emphasis on contemporary publishing trends.”

While the line-up for this year’s festival was still to be finalised when Wairarapa Lifestyle went to print, David says it will be a

who’s who of New Zealand writers, celebrity chefs, historians and comedians … something for everyone.

“there’s been an explosion of food books in the past few years written by some real New Zealand characters that combine spectacular photography with fantastic recipes and in some cases a strong travel element,” says David. “they’ve been extremely popular and appeal to a broad audience.”

In addition one of the festival’s most popular events, the great WBS Yarns in Barns Debate will be held. Previous years have attracted local personalities including Mary Kippenberger, roy Farman and Marama Fox, as well as national identities including comedian te radar, columnist Joe Bennett and cartoonist tom Scott.

“You could say the debate has become a Wairarapa institution over the year attracting some of the top debaters from all over New Zealand,” says David. “Audiences are always guaranteed a laugh.”

When Jerry grabs the controls of the Fokker DvII during April’s WW1 airshow in Masterton he will have two things on his mind.

How to position the aircraft so it best demonstrates how it would have flown in wartime and entertaining the crowd.

“When I fly (at airshows) I try and replicate how the dog fights and chases would’ve been,” he told Wairarapa Lifestyle. “they were close, they were exciting and the pilots needed precision flying. In a plane like a DvII it’s very manoeuvrable so even though you’re flying to entertain the people below, you’ve got to concentrate on positioning it so you’re safe but so they see a jolly good show.”

the experienced commercial and test pilot, who originally hails from America but now calls New Zealand home, is widely regarded as flying a spirited display in the vintage Aviator Collection’s DvII. He also looks splendid in a replica uniform of Lothar von richthofen, a german WW1 fighter credited with 40 victories and the young brother of the red Baron.

Jerry will also be one of 12 tvAL pilots taking to the skies in around 20 different WW1 type aircrafts during the April 28th airshow at Hood Aerodrome, which will commemorate ANZAC Day. the airshow will feature aircraft from the vintage Aviator Collection - one of the largest collections of WW1 original, reproduction and replica aircraft in the world and will include the debut of new aircraft. It will also see the return of the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car from the 1968 movie starring Dick van Dyke, offering rides and photo opportunities for donations to charity.

there will also be free vintage vehicle rides in WW1 ambulances, tanks and troop carriers; live entertainment, food and beverage stalls and full commentary. gates open at 12pm with rides between 1pm – 2.30pm and the airshow display beginning at 2.30pm. My mother turned green with envy when I told her I’d enjoyed a ride in the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car. She was a huge

fan of the children’s book written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming which was made into the popular British musical film starring Dick van Dyke. She saw it for the first time in the late 1960s at the regent in Cathedral Square. A decade later Mum would read the book to me and each Christmas we’d watch re-runs of the movie on tv.

the story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a car owned by the Potts Family, which could float on water and even fly – quite handy attributes indeed when one has to endure a kidnapping and outwit a mob of gangsters – never seems to tire.

thus it’s somewhat amazing that this “fantasmagorical machine” designed by Ken Adam and built by the Ford racing team and described as “the most recognisable car in the world” has made several appearances at Hood Aerodrome in little old Masterton. Well … we all have filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson to thank for that. He bought the car at auction last year and has generously lent it for use in charity drives at Hood Aerodrome.

During January’s WW1 Joyeux Noel airshow, that featured aircraft from the vintage Aviator Collection, I gave a gold coin donation in return for a bumpy jaunt across the grass. getting some sense of wonder that those Potts children must’ve experienced; I soaked up every lap of my ride in that car. I enjoyed every little bump. Every little stare we got from the crowd. And couldn’t help but notice the enormous smile on the driver’s face. I admired the car’s bonnet of polished aluminium, the boat deck of hand-crafted red and white cedar and noticed how the brass fittings, evidently taken from Edwardian cars, shone in the late afternoon sun. I was later told the alloy dashboard plate was from a British WW1 fighter plane.

Even though my mother couldn’t make January’s show, the good news for her is that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will return for the ANZAC WW1 Air Show at Hood Aerodrome on April 28. I can’t guarantee it will fly, nor can I guarantee it will float on water. But I am sure it will be a magical experience.

giant insects rest on the walls of Stephen Allwood’s studio, one weta in monochromatic greys, another in warmer multi-tones.At one end of the white room, a group of small canvases have

been painted with butterflies and beetles, imitating a traditional wood and glass case collection.

Entomology is the Martinborough artist’s current theme, as he paints towards an exhibition at Wellington’s Bowen galleries later this year.

the oversized insects are in keeping with Stephen’s style of large canvases, glossy subjects and an interest in the darker side of nature.

“I like painting things that are shiny and a lot of insects are shiny,’’ he says.

One of Stephen’s earliest collections – a very shiny one - lies in a paddock west of Masterton. In 1979, he was just 19 when hired to paint 45 icons inside the little orthodox church Masterton businessman george Pantelis built for the greek community.

Stephen, a Catholic born in Fiji to teacher parents, put art studies in Christchurch on hold for a year, covering the white plastered walls of the church with glittering religious pictures.

“I prefer large paintings and tend to paint quickly, which is why I wasn’t daunted by the size of the job,’’ he says. “I needed to paint about one icon a week.’’

With the church job under his belt, Stephen finished art school with a major in print making and went overseas before settling back in New Zealand with partner Jo Crabb, a chef.

the couple had eateries in Auckland, where Stephen also had a studio, before running Café Medici in Martinborough for 11 years. their business is now Careme - cooking classes at Palliser Estate winery, when not at their property in France. Stephen has had numerous solo exhibitions in New Zealand over the years.

there have been many subjects painted between the icons and the insects. Sheep, Kiwi camping sites, piles of recycling and greek mythology have found their way on to his canvases, often with paint dripping and streaking.

raw meat also appeals – the comparison between paint and flesh – and he has a picture of meat hanging in his local butcher’s shop.

“People have painted meat throughout history; a lot of religious works had gory elements to them, with bits of meat here and there.

“that inspiration may come from my Catholic upbringing – the theatre of it.’’

true to his quick painting style, Stephen is capable of completing a large insect in a day or less.

“I like to have the whole painting wet, so I do it quickly, often rushing back to look at it.’’

He sources many images from the Internet and modifies them. “I love painting the insects much bigger than reality. there are so many possibilities; I could make them up and paint insects that have never existed and perhaps recreate the past.’’

As for the butterflies, Stephen had a collection box as a boy and is keen to depict forgotten treasures – broken insects, with bits of legs on the bottom of the case.

“You often see dusty collections like that in antique shops. New Zealand has a slightly dark side, so that could be why I’m interested in painting insects – but I won’t know until I get into it. Often the paint itself will determine how it works.’’

He’s completed the Coast to Coast multisport race, the alpine adventure run the goat and the tararua Mountain race, but

now David Hancock is eyeing up new challenges. the recently appointed general manager of Destination

Wairarapa, the regional tourism organisation (rtO) charged with marketing the region both domestically and internationally, says he is looking forward to exploring more of the region’s expansive coastline, native bush and pursuing his passion for mountain running.

“I love it (mountain running), it’s a great personal challenge allowing you to push yourself mentally and physically,” he says. “It also takes you to some pretty amazing parts of the country and I’m excited about discovering some more trails here.”

Before moving from the Kapiti Coast to Masterton earlier this year with his partner tracey and their two children Will and Neve, David already had a good knowledge of the Wairarapa. During his tenure as Hutt City visitor development manager he was a driver of the multi-agency Wellington-Wairarapa Cycle trail group which was formed to establish a loop cycle trail over the rimutaka rail trail linking Wellington with Wairarapa. this is something he is looking forward to further developing in his new role.

“two rtOs, three councils, the Wellington regional Council and DOC are all right behind this and working hard on it, ensuring it will become another successful trail within the New Zealand Cycle trail network.”

With 20 years tourism experience, David’s career has involved working with travel agents, airlines, hotels, tour operators and local

government. His most recent role as Hutt City visitor development manager saw him reposition the i-SItE visitor centre as a retail centre, expand sister city relationships and assist businesses develop new visitor products.

But the thing he is most proud of was lobbying a change for the district plan to include temporary activities such a holding an event. He also got visitors from cruise ships in Wellington out to the Hutt valley after developing special garden tours and tours of Jackson St in Petone.

Now David is looking forward to working with his team to create a lasting tourism legacy for Wairarapa with several initiatives such as seeing a more collective approach to marketing the region as a conference venue to the benefit of individual operators and developing niche markets - for example agricultural tours for specialist groups.

“I’m looking to pick up on the great work the team at Destination Wairarapa has been doing with marketing the region and the i-SItES; but I think there’s more that can be done to segment the Wairarapa product. It’s something we’ve already drafted a strategy for.”

Destination Wairarapa will continue to work closely with Positively Wellington tourism at developing the Australian visitor market and will also communicate with local residents about the value of the Masterton and Martinborough i-SItE visitorcentres.

“I really want to see more Wairarapa people using i-SItES for booking their holidays around New Zealand and for booking things for friends and family when they come to visit.”

Since taking the helm of regional tourism organisation Destination Wairarapa, David Hancock says he is looking forward to experiencing more of the region he’s in charge of marketing. By Katie Farman.

Hanging from the roof of Brett Harman’s shed are several vintage bicycle frames – one complete with hard tyres. He can

recall where he found each of them and knows each has its own sentimental story; but it’s his own story he’s more interested in creating.

“I’ll do them up one day – when I have grandkids of my own. they’ll look just fantastic with the chrome all finished and frame sall painted up – I mean look at the shape of those handlebars – they’re just great.”

Brett, who has an extensive background in the film industry and worked for Weta Workshop during the making of Lord of the rings, is standing in one part of his large shed surrounded by vintage books, tin toys, old petrol tins, road signs, motor racing paraphernalia, tools and movie props including a replica art deco inspired helmet from the rocketeer movie.

Heck, there’s even a set of train signals and a log fire in the corner to keep him warm in the winter.

Brett says he has accumulated the majority of his wares since moving to Carterton 13 years ago with his wife Lisa. Many of the petrol tins, pumps or other motor industry related equipment have been found at rubbish dumps, in second hand stores or given to him by friends or work colleagues.

“I’m not interested in the monetary value of things, just the look of them or if they’re useful to me,” he says.

It’s clear looking around Brett loves to fix things, pull them apart and put them back together. take the pile of old spades, garden forks and chains which have been transformed into an impressive set of dragon gates hanging in front of the couple’s round yellow house made out of an old cyclone barn.

there are bits of scrap metal, old tools and welding equipment suggesting this shed is more than a place to store things. It’s also a place of work. A place for reflection and a place for coming up with ideas and implementing them.

“I’ve a million ideas everyday. I do spend a lot of time here and Lisa is happy to spend her time creating her artworks in her workshop which is completely different to this and that’s cool, it suits us.”

to the outside eye, the order in Brett’s shed may appear hap-hazard. Chaotic even. But he insists he knows where everything is. More importantly he knows if he leaves his bolt cutters on the window side of his workbench – they will be there when he next needs them, unless his 16-year-old son Finn, who has his own double garage, isn’t using them.

What’s even more interesting is, after Brett showed Wairarapa Lifestyle through his shed, he admitted he was looking to re-arrange everything. re-establish the order so to speak, so the creative juices could flow more freely.

“I’m not an artist, rather someone who just likes making things,” he says simply. “And I think it might be time to revitalize the shed.”

donuts for Lucy - RIP

rick had been back from the States a week when

our pet pig, Old Lady Lucy, got sick again. She had her time with him, her walks around the paddock and her belly rubs. then she decided to go.

She lay down and stopped eating. When I

syringed water into her mouth, she let it fall out the other side. I got her a new round of anti-inflammatories in a powder form, but I couldn’t get the drugs into her. She wouldn’t even eat the lovely, drug-infused jam sandwiches I made. She began whimpering in a new way.

After three days of this we decided to put her down. It was our first day back at work after the Christmas break – the first time in weeks that both of us were away from the property for the day.

I called Liz, the vet, and said, “Could you come after we get home from work tonight? I know it’s out of hours, but it would break my heart to not be there when Lucy goes.”

Liz, being a kind vet, said yes.On the way home that evening, rick and I stopped and bought

a dozen mini donuts. We wanted to give Lucy a last meal we knew she’d love.

When we got home, we immediately went out to the hayshed to say our goodbyes before Liz arrived.

We saw Lucy in the hayshed and called out to her, but she didn’t answer with her usual grunted hello. She was silent. I stepped in the gate and walked over to her. I put my hand on her side. She was still warm, but the dear old pig was already dead.

When my grandmother was dying, she asked everyone to leave the room just before she passed away. It was as if having everyone there with her, loving her, was somehow keeping her in this world. She had to be alone to die.

Maybe rick and I, without knowing it, had been holding Lucy back the same way.

I said a small prayer over Lucy’s large, hairy body. I asked the pig god to take care of Lucy’s enthusiastic pig soul. then I called Liz to tell her that she didn’t need to come anymore.

that’s when the real work began.I have been raised in cotton wool. Other people have always

taken care of the bodies of the people and animals I have loved. Doctors and vets and funeral directors. But true death is a physical thing. It involves moving and lifting and burying. It hurts your back as well as your heart.

the hole rick and I dug was large and deep. A grown man could have laid down inside of it, if he curled up his legs.

We moved Lucy’s 150kg body in fits and starts, with two towels wrapped underneath her in a sling. We took five steps and rested, then five steps more.

I don’t know why we didn’t ask friends and neighbours for help. I suppose it was something rick and I wanted to do together. A private, sacred act. the last thing we would ever do for our Lucy.

She started out being rick’s pig. In the end, she was definitely ours.

We wanted to get her body into the hole with dignity, but we failed. We could only hold her at the edge and drop her in. I still feel bad about that. She landed with a tumble and thump, her feet sticking up into the air. It was horrible.

“We have to put her on her side,” I said. “We can’t leave her like that.”

I climbed down inside the grave. there wasn’t much room for my feet. the walls of the earth came to my waist. I tried to turn her, but I couldn’t. She was too heavy, too big. I gave her one last belly rub, down there with her in her grave, and then I climbed out.

rick and I stood with one foot on either side of the grave, reached in, grabbed her legs, and tried to turn her again. If it wasn’t so sad, it would have been funny. two incompetent city boys trying to bury an enormous pig.

We stood and looked down at Lucy, now lying peacefully at the bottom of her grave.

rick said, “thank you, Lucy, for all of the joy you brought us.”I opened the box of donuts and placed them in the grave with

her, around her mouth.“In heaven you’ll get donuts every day,” I said.then, reluctantly, as carefully as we possibly could, we shovelled

the dirt down over her poor, sweet head.the entire time Old Lady Lucy was sick and dying, her strapping

young boarfriend, Kowhai the toyboy, kept guard outside the gate to the hayshed hospital. He lay there in driving rain and scorching sun just to be near her.

After we buried Lucy, I let Kowhai inside the hayshed so he could see she was gone. He wasn’t convinced, and for the next three days he continued lying in that spot at the gate, as if waiting for her return.

Pigs need company, and Kowhai is a borrowed pig. Either we had to give Kowhai back to his original owners or get him some new friends. the thought of being pigless upset rick so much that he immediately began negotiations on a new pig loan.

A week later we had not one but two more borrowed kunekune pigs – Dougal the Dim-Witted Eunuch and his sultry sister, Mrs D, who has a reputation for being a bit of a harlot. Kowhai, of course, is very pleased with the new arrangements.

Even so, every once in a while I still find Kowhai in his old spot at the hayshed gate. I just pet him behind the ears and say, “Sorry, Kowhai. the old girl’s gone and not coming back.”

On a low painted bench seat at the Clareville sale yards sit a handful of Wairarapa men who have farmed through the decades. there’s John Jury, 75, of greytown, formerly Ponatahi. Beside

him are other men who have spent their lives in the country.John and his mates come to the Country Livestock sales at the

A&P showgrounds near Carterton most Fridays – as sure as other Wairarapa folk meet for an end-of-week lunch or a round of golf.

they may not always have animals to sell, nor may they be buying, but they love the buzz of the auctions and the farmers’ yarns, so they come to the sales to watch, listen and advise.

At the auctions, operated by brothers Ian and Lyall Hicks, anything from sheep to chickens, goats, calves and pigs can be bought and sold.

Men of all ages lean over the pens, commenting on the state of the stock. those ones need drenching, they say. the mob in another pen is too small. there are plenty of women at the auctions too and the school holidays bring children, who wander down the lines with cans of fizz and hotdogs on sticks, from the caravan outside.

the Hickses began stock auctions at the Clareville site 18 years ago. the bench seat near the office, with a fine view of the pens, is unofficially reserved for the veteran farmers and regulars, Ian says.

``they come along to have a social talk - it’s part of life. We’re used to seeing the usual faces on the seat. One retired farmer didn’t show up for a couple of weeks and we wondered where he’d got to. turned out he’d had a fall.’’

the sales are under cover on a concrete floor and gumboots are a must. In the rows of smaller wooden pens are sheep and pigs, awaiting their fate, as auctioneer graham Howie moves in with his clipboard. With deft calling and lots of eye contact with buyers leaning in close, he attempts to make the sale.

Alongside the experienced farmers is a breeder of coloured sheep, Michele Heath, who moved to 10.5 acres in the Waiohine gorge

from Wellington four years ago. Michele has brought five of her ram lambs to the stock auction, with a reserve of $80 each.

``C’mon, c’mon,’’ she mutters, as the bids rise around her mob. She’s in luck, as the new owner commits to $100 per head.

Newcomers and lifestyle-blockers are made welcome at the stock sales and the yards are well set up for small numbers of animals, Ian Hicks says.

``Most of the lifestyle people are pretty good but we get the odd ones who take home young calves, put them out in the paddock without feeding them, then ring up and ask why they died.’’

After the sheep, it’s time to auction the cattle in the larger pens. Bidders and watchers climb on to a small area of tiered seating to get a good view. Afterwards, there are suddenly queues for the hot food outside and at the office, where details are confirmed.

Some Fridays bring sundries to be auctioned, such as wire, tools and possum traps. the most unusual animal has been a donkey. It didn’t sell.

When asked for more stories, the sort that are told time and again over the seasons, Ian just smiles – perhaps they’re reserved for the men on the bench.

Te Parae homestead, surrounded by farmland on the outskirts of Masterton, is a place many little girls could only dream of. An historic sprawling structure flanked

by sweeping tree filled gardens and a lake inspiring fairy tale like fantasies. Tanya Katterns visits the homestead

that is being opened up as a premier events venue.

If there are ghosts lingering in the attics or tucked into corners of any of the seven bedrooms at te Parae, they are clearly at peace

as the homestead only beckons with an air of tranquillity.Weddings have already been hosted, dinner parties have been

held and groups have gathered in functions that have become merely the start of grander dreams to come.

For Angela Irving, her return to te Parae with her husband Simon last winter was a homecoming with a sense of excitement of what the future held for the homestead.

“I have only happy memories growing up here with my brothers and my parents tom and gay. the place was always filled with people, staff working with the horses and visitors coming and going. It was always a welcoming home.”

“Our dream is to showcase this property and let its history, which has been in the Williams family for over a century, continue on. I see this being a place where couples celebrate their wedding, corporations bring their staff for team-building, and laughter fills the halls in various birthday and other event celebrations.”

It is a generational home. Her great grandparents, champion golfer Eileen Williams (nee Lewis) and husband guy had the homestead built for their new life together in 1905. Her grandparents Alister and his new wife Nancy, who brought with her two broodmares, later took over – with the beginnings of the now well respected te Parae stud.

the third generation was her parents, and now succession plans for the property have brought Angela and Simon.

From the past 10 years spent in Auckland, Angela quickly realised that returning to her childhood home at te Parae was to become a labour of love.

“the reality of moving in was pretty mind blowing really. You sort of don’t have much of a concept of living in such a massive house outside of childhood until you get in and live in it and the space is incredible.”

It is now a fulltime passion for Angela, working around the property and combining her years of event management skills gained with working for a French luxury brand – to creating the future vision for te Parae under her and Simon’s stewardship.

“As a wedding venue for example, it can be a one stop shop. Wedding coordination and planning combined with having this most magnificent venue. this is not just our home but it is a massive part of the Wairarapa history and I believe it needs to be shared.”

What is set in concrete though is that the homestead will also remain for generations of Williams family members to come.

“As my mother always says to me, ‘you are a tenant for the next generations. You never own te Parae’.”

PRoVIDoREAlmost 10 years ago roger Barrett co-founded Providore, a

catering company that fronted as a little deli shop in Martinborough. With takeaway frozen meals, filled rolls and award winning pies, Providore very quickly built up a steady clientele.

Not long after, Providore entered into a ‘marriage’ with Brackenridge, which continues to this day, offering weekly conferences and a busy summer season packed with weddings and functions.

NICoLE MARSDEN PhoToGRAPhYOriginally a commercial photographer from taupo, Nicole started

in weddings in 2006 after tagging along with a colleague to a beautiful wedding in Hawkes Bay. She immediately fell in love with everything involved – the excitement and emotion, all of the gorgeous details and the dress! to be in the room when the father sees his daughter resplendent in her bridal gown for the first time, is one of the best parts for her. Nicole believes it’s also really important to document all of the little details that the bride and groom go to, to make their day unique – it never ceases to amaze her how much time and energy they put into this!

Nicole has worked extensively in the taupo and Hawkes Bay areas, from the largest vineyard venues with over 200 guests, to the smaller more intimate venues such as the exclusive Huka Lodge. She moved to Masterton in 2009 with her family and although she still consider herself a ‘newbie’ to the Wairarapa area, last season has seen her work at venues in Palmerston North, riversdale, Martinborough and Masterton.

the tin Hut dates from 1857 and has a colourful history as a local pub. For 151 years the tin Hut has serviced travellers, visitors and the local South Wairarapa community. the tin Hut was named in 1923 when the original pub, the tauherenikau Hotel, burnt down. A temporary premises, a corrugated iron hut, was constructed and the locals affectionately named it the tin Hut.

In 2004 Marcus Darley bought the tin Hut with the view to developing an environment which could be soothing and reflective for visitors, a focal point for the South Wairarapa district and would meet the needs of families.

tania and ron Everson purchased IN.grE’DI.ENt on 1 April 2011. the deli and café is a well established business in the heart of the Martinborough Wine village providing fresh bread, local and NZ cheeses, local olive oils, preserves and wine. they specialise in cheese platters matched with a local glass of wine and also serve terrines and pates.

As part of the deli/café, the premises include approx. a 50m2 room with two french doors opening out onto Ohio Street, that was renovated to provide a space to serve high teas.

this part of the business is called grandma’s Kitchen. It has its own identity and branding and provides high teas on weekends and public holidays, with private functions and bookings during the week. the tea rooms are decorated in a style that reflect a home and where the high teas are served with tradition and love.

grandma’s Kitchen was named after tania’s memories as a young girl having afternoon tea with her great grandma, grandmother and mother, drinking tea from a miniature pink china cup and eating home baking and scones. It is named after her grandmother and mother, who is a grandma to her three sons. Both grandmother and mother are very good bakers and love to share a good cup of tea and baking with friends and family.

Collecting fine china is a love of tania’s family and this passion has been passed down to her. She hopes that you will enjoy taking tea and the experience that grandma’s Kitchen offers. there is also a range of loose leaf tea from tea total, blended in New Zealand from the best tea available, which is also available in retail packs to take home and continue the experience.

It’s been a busy year for Megan and Olivier rochery at Café Mirabelle. this little corner of France in the heart of the Wairarapa – Carterton – is well patronised by locals and visitors alike. Now four years old, the word has spread far and wide about the delightful food and cosy atmosphere.

From tuesday to Friday, 9am till 3.30 pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm, Megan’s delicious cakes, pastries, dishes of the day and supreme coffee are served.

On Friday and Saturday nights from 7pm the white tablecloths go on and the café transforms into a French bistrôt serving from a menu of regional and family cuisine. the café is now fully licensed but you are still welcome to bring your own wine for a corkage fee of $8.

Seating is limited to around 35 guests so it’s a good idea to book ahead on 06 379 7247.

Wild Oats Café is well known for country-sized

servings of fresh baked breads and cakes, quiche, lasagne, filo wraps and grill plate special corn wheels, but also offers greek and pasta salads, roast veggies and the famous Carterton Breakfast which is available from as early as 5am.

It’s also a favoured meeting place for car, motorcycle and cycle club day outings, with a private dining area upstairs for 10-40 guests or family members. the staff is proud to offer clean facilities and excellent service with a smile.

Wholesome, seasonal and fresh are words that describe the

When a young boy swallowed a magnet which had to be removed surgically, who would have known that Pukaha Mount Bruce, New

Zealand’s national wildlife centre, would end up benefitting from this unfortunate incident? the boy in question, 10-year-old John, recently visited Pukaha with his parents and nine-year-old sister Emily, and the pair made a generous donation of their own pocket money to the ‘burrow-cam’ fund. this has been set up to benefit the centre’s most famous resident – Manukura the white kiwi chick who was born in May 2011 as part of the very successful captive breeding programme.

John was keen to support the cause of this rarest of rare birds after he realised that they had a shared bond as Manukura (which means ‘of chiefly status’ in Maori) had undergone a recent operation to remove some stones from her stomach. Not quite magnets, but just as uncomfortable, and John and his family’s tremendous support of Pukaha now has a more personal attachment.

Set in 940 hectares of forest, Pukaha is on State Highway 2, about halfway between Napier and Wellington. It is a very special stop-off point on your travels, to relax and enjoy nature, and make a difference to the life of endangered species, such as New Zealand’s iconic kiwi.

the centre is dedicated to restoring the forest and protecting and nurturing endangered birds and animals – particularly kiwi, kokako, kaka and tuatara.

Pukaha is a not for profit organisation. Each year the Pukaha Mount Bruce Board is responsible for raising funds for its forest restoration programme and to keep our wildlife safe.
