from Wainuiomata High School will be focusing their efforts on the academic achievements of senior students.

Principal Martin Isberg says results last year were the best the school had ever achieved and this year the main objective is

to better ourselves and continue achieving at this level.

National Certificate of Edu-cational Achievement (NCEA) level one results in 2013 were up 70 per cent from the previous year, with the staff looking to achieve an 85 per cent comple-tion rate.

Lance Denby and Jackie Swin-ton are looking for the commu-nity to stay loyal as they undergo a change in their business.

As of August 1, Wainuiomata Building World ITM will change its name to Wainuiomata Land-scape and Lumber.

The rebrand comes from a change in the direction of the business, and a want to support the community more, Mr Denby says.

Wainuiomata Landscape and Lumber will offer tools and supplies to help with a range of projects including landscaping, fencing, decking; as well as adding to, or altering properties.

“We’re winding back to the start for a fresh start,” Mr Denby says.

“As the industry changes, so must the suppliers,” he says.

The withdrawal from the ITM Group for the Wainuiomata suppliers happened in July, after almost 20 years under the well-known kiwi banner.

“The demographic of the busi-ness is simply changing, that’s all...We need the support of the community to continue; they are loyal and we thank them for the support over the years,” Mr Denby says.

“We’re defi nitely excited about the change...We’re also looking forward to working with the community in years to come,” he says.

With the rebrand of the Wai-nuiomata store, Mr Denby says it is going to be a new chapter.

The change of name will cre-ate the opportunity to have a more defi ned range if products; however, it means the team has been decreased to three.

“We feel we can run it and get back to basics,” Mr Denby says.

“We’ve had awesome support from the community and suppli-ers so far. There’s been nothing negative come from the name change and everyone is very positive towards it,” he says.

“To help achieve this, we have developed processes for tracking and monitoring our students’ credit accumulation, and are about to introduce a mentoring system for those that we feel may need some extra support,” Mr Isberg says.

Throughout the rest of 2014, much like the fi rst half of this year, teachers will continue to work with students in year 11, 12, and 13 year levels as they prepare for NCEA examinations in term four.

and programmes run by the school have been helpful so far this year.

Both Ariana and Freesia are

currently working towards their NCEA level one quali-fi cations. Both students have been ticking off credits and achievements on their indi-vidual achievement plans (IAP) set up by the school to help keep track of how they are progressing.

“It’s been helpful for me as it shows me where I am and how I am going,” Ariana says.

Knowing when exams are by keeping in touch with her teachers is a way Freesia likes to keep on top of her achievements.

While the IAP has been working well for students, Mr Isberg is encouraging

parents to keep communi-cating with their children about their credits and what assessments are on the ho-rizon.

He says at the end of the day it is up to them, students have to put in the effort to make sure they get their qualifi cations. Despite this, the school is pushing stu-dents, helping them know what needs to be done.

“While many of our stu-dents can expect to leave in term four, to go on study leave, there is an expecta-tion that some will stay at the high school for a few more weeks to complete as-sessments,” Mr Isberg says.

The Hutt City Council’s About Space programme is moving the city forward through activating empty store fronts and showing the space’s commercial appeal by using creative and interac-tive projects.So far two new businesses have started operating in the CBD through About Space. items on Sonali’s bucket list.Reporter Dan Whit� eld talks to the local woman to � nd out why her list is news-

worthy, why 2014 is important to her, and how she plans to make a dent in the list.

A disabled young woman from Wainuiomata is seeking help from her community in order to tick activities off her ‘Ultimate Bucket List’.

Sonali Bhattacharjee, 24, decided that 2014 would be the year she sets into motion her goal of experiencing the world, starting by meeting NASCAR Joey Logano and his fi ancée Brittany Baca – as well as travelling to other countries in the process.

Sonali is deaf and lives with autism, which affects her abil-ity to work and communicate. Her disability also hinders her ability to drive a car.

The Wainuiomata resident’s goal is to reach $200,000 to help her meet the accommoda-tion, travel, food and other ex-penses while ticking to-do’s off her bucket list. Ultimately she hopes her experience will take her to Alaska, Canada, Amer-ica, Hawaii, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Italy, India, Nepal, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia to achieve this.

“I’ve had lots of support so far, including more than $700 on my Givealittle page...I’m looking forward to achieving my goals,” Sonali says.

There will be no leaf left unturned as the Hutt City Council prepares to undergo a massive hunt to find the region’s greatest trees.

While the competition is a fun way to allow the residents of Hutt City to be part of council activities, the main reason for the tree search is to review the notable trees register under the district plan.

After just two weeks of the tree hunt, Pohutukawa and Totara are leading the way in terms of the most popular species; however, there is still time to nominate, with council encouraging people to get involved.

Hutt residents can nomi-nate a tree or trees in their neighbourhoods, as long as they are in urban areas of the city. Nominations can be made by contacting coun-cil via email, twitter (using the hashtag #greathutttrees), posting back the Great Hutt Trees postcard which is avail-able from council offices, or filling out a nomination form at www.huttcity.govt.nz/greathutttrees.

Despite the opportunity to nominate any tree in Hutt City, not all of them will make the cut.

If a tree or group of trees do get nominated, it does not automatically qualify it for protected status under the

district plan. All nominations will be

checked by council offi cials and will then be assessed by a qualifi ed arborist, with assessments to be completed throughout September, Octo-ber, and November.

If a tree, or trees, score well it will be considered for addition to the notable trees register.

A notable tree is defi ned by Hutt City Council as trees which make a distinctive contribution to a community’s identity – through visual fea-tures, acting as a landmark, or connecting the community to its heritage.

Project takes top spot

A reduction in crime and reoffending in the Hutt Valley has come as a delight for Justice Minister Judith Collins, with the region’s justice sector be-ing recognised at the recent 2014 IPANZ Awards.

The Ministry of Justice, along with New Zealand Police and Department of Corrections, won the Excellence in Achieving Collective Impact Award for the Hutt Valley Justice Sector Innovation Project.

The regional project is an example of what can be achieved when agencies work together to deliver better outcomes for New Zealanders

Ms Collins says the project’s success refl ects increased collaboration between police, justice, corrections and other agencies and service provid-ers to focus on the specifi c needs of communities and vulnerable families.

“The project is about bringing agencies together to identify local solutions to local problems,” Ms Collins says.

Total crime was down 23 per cent between June 2011 and September 2013 around the Hutt Valley, and Ms Collins says this is excellent news for the community.

Evangelist Carl Butler is the pioneer of Fan the Flame Ministries in Aus-tralia, and will be coming to Wainuiomata as part of the Life City Church’s mission to promote the community.

Mr Butler was born in

Hawera and is the sev-enth child in a family of five boys and two girls. He graduated from Strike Force Ministry Training Institute in 1994 and since then has continued pastoral ministry in Brisbane.

While in Wainuiomata, Mr Butler is set to be part of a healing meeting on August 8, and is open to anyone in need of a miracle. The night starts at 7pm. He will also run a seminar on August 9, called Moving in the Miraculous. This starts at 9am and runs until

2.30pm but registrations are needed before the event.

Based in Wainuiomata on Parkway, the mission of Life City Church is to empower, enhance, and encourage people’s lives through Jesus Christ. It is a church that believes in celebrating life everyday and in every way.

Fan the Flame Ministries was pioneered by Mr Butler in 1997 and is a ministry which brings faith, healing, harvest and revival to a large network of churches and ministries worldwide.

A boxing event in Wainuiomata is entering the fi nal stages of preparation with organisers working towards paring fi ghters for the night.

Rob Cameron, brother of New Zealand boxer Shane “Mountain Warrior” Cam-eron, says the event is coming together, with the fi nal competitors being paired with other boxers.

“So far it is looking like there will be a minimum of 15 bouts,” Rob says. He also tells the Wainuiomata News that boxers will be coming from around New Zealand including Auckland and Christchurch, and around the greater Wellington region.

Wainuiomata Boxing Club has six com-petitors involved in the event including Raymond Seamanu, and young gun Jared

Paku – a recent winner of the Central North Island Boxing Championships. The club is still working on fi nding competi-tors for three of its boxers.

“It’s going to be an awesome night...It’s defi nitely going to be better than previous years,” Rob says.

Other draw cards for the event will be the Hutt Valley’s Joe Blackburn, as well as up and coming boxer Ricky Murphy – who is being mentored by Shane.

“It will be good for the community to see the talent our local boxers have. It may also inspire people to get into the sport and keep youth off the streets,” he says.

The fi ght night has been organised for this weekend, and will be held at the Wai-nuiomata Little Theatre on Moohan St.

HVDHB celebrates 10,000 babies

Novopay has been an issue for schools around New Zealand for the past few years; but with the recent news that the school payroll service will come under Govern-ment management as of October, teachers are hopeful all problems will be resolved.Wainuiomata High School was fortunate to have only one sta� member a� ected by the problem system over the school year. The new model involves a government-owned company taking over the operation of the payroll service, and the core soft-ware to be licensed to that company.Minister Steven Joyce, who was responsi-ble for Novopay, says the decision to trans-fer the service to a Government-owned

company was made by mutual agreement between the Ministry of Education and Talent2.“This decision has been made in the best interests of all parties: sta� , administra-tors, schools, and the Government,” Mr Joyce says.“It became the logical next step towards giving schools a more stable, sustainable and simple payroll service,” he says.Responsibility for payroll processing and service centre activities will be passed on to the new Government-owned com-pany e� ective of October 17, this year. The company will also be responsible for the customisations of the software.

I am hearing positive statements about news that the mall owner is looking at some major redevelopment of the mall. Still a lot of work by the owner to take place before it happens, but absolutely fantastic for Wainuiomata if it does.

Mike and his son David Grigg continue with their great work, they presented a book to Trevor Mallard M.P and me to give us a better understanding of people with special needs. We are working alongside them with Autism New Zealand to make the community and council a place of more empathy for people with special needs.

Mayor’s Taskforce for jobs doing a great job in Wainuiomata in assisting young people in to jobs or back in to education. The initiative is called Youth Inspire and it provides meaningful pathways to young people who have become disengaged with their future. This is a real community effort, thanks to all involved.

Letters to the editorDear Ed,On Fr iday night,

July 25, I took a nasty fall outside the rear of Countdown, badly hurt-ing my face and knee. Two staff members who were outside on a break and a customer – an off duty nurse – came to my aid.

They recovered my broken glasses and took me inside where a seat appeared and took care

of me, cleaning me up until my husband arrived to take me to hospital.

In my state of shock I did not get these lovely ladies names, (and the nurse’s patient partner who held her shopping and waited while she took care of me).

I would like to thank these wonderful people for their help and I am glad to report I only

had to spend the night in hospital and am now at home recovering. If you are ever passing my home, call in, you will always be welcome for a cup of tea or coffee.

The grating I fell down is unmarked and a danger and should be addressed by the Mall Management.

Hutt Valley Police is continuing an e� ort to locate Jonathan Antipas who has a warrant for his arrest issued and has been actively avoiding local authorities.Police believe the 24-year-old is the Hutt Valley area and is continuing to have of-� cers looking for him and checking known associates and addresses.Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says: “My message for Jonathan is that this matter is not going to go away and it will simply be a matter of time before we catch up with him.”“We encourage him to come forward and

Wainuiomata High School is still look-ing for parents in the local community to support international students over the next few months.

The overseas students are set to stay for up to four weeks and attend school in Wainuiomata with local families needed to act as homestays during this period.

Homestay co-ordinator Natasha Baker told the Wainuiomata News last month that all international students are hosted by Wainuiomata families.

International students that attend Wainuio-mata High School take part in a normal New Zealand school year, with staff encouraging them to take an international student tour during the school holidays – creating a great way for them to meet others as well as experience some of the things the country

offers. In January each year, the high school

estimates to get about 10 students that are usually here to study for six months to a year.

Ms Baker says they fi t right in; and current high school students are very welcoming to those visiting from overseas.

Homestay is a form of tourism and study abroad that allows a visitor to rent a room from a local family in a homelike setting.

Each year the high school gets long stay students, who stay for six months to a year.

There are three common causes:1. Bacterial or vital infec-tions. Because these infec-tions are very contagious, care needs to be taken not to spread the infection to the other eye and other people. If left untreated the infection should clear within a week. Although

sometimes antibiotic eye drops are useful for bacter-ial infections. � e pharma-cists at Clive's Pharmacy can advise the most appro-priate treatment.2. Allergic conjunctivitis may be due to irritants like pollens, house dust or pet fur. Antihistamine eye drops and oral antihista-mines are useful in the treatment of allergic con-junctivitis. It is a good idea to try to avoid the cause of an allergy as much as pos-sible.3. Irritant or chemical conjunctivitis can have a mechanical or chem-ical cause, such as foreign objects or chlorine from the swimming pool. � is

usually clears when the cause is removed.A doctor needs to be con-sulted if there is pain in your eye, if your vision is aff ected, or your eyes are more sensitive to light than usual. Children under two years of age with symptoms should also see a doctor.

General tips for conjunctivitis include:

• Wash your hands before using eye drops and after touching your eyes• Clean away any dis-charge with a warm fl an-nel before using eye drops.• Apply normal saline to

wash and soothe the eye/s twice daily.• Prevent the spread to other people by NOT sharing face cloths, towels, make-up.• Do not share eye drops with other people• Discard eye drops one month after opening the bottle.

Wainuiomata boasts a huge population of car enthusiasts and because of this, local resident Ross Hunia has proposed to create a classic car show here in the valley.

As the proud owner of a 1978 Triumph 2500S, Mr Hunia says it would work well as there are so many people with classic cars worthy of being on show.

The idea of creating a Wainuio-mata-based car show is based on

the fact that Mr Hunia and a good handful of locals attend events in the Hutt Valley and Wellington regions on a annual basis.

He tells the Wainuiomata News that he feels the community would support a local car show, and so would the owners of cars.

At this stage the car show is only a proposal but Mr Hunia is positive it could happen.

If the show was to gain traction with car enthusiasts scattered around the community, Mr Hunia

believes a good place for it to run would be the Wainuiomata Bowl-ing Club’s carpark on Moohan St.

Despite interest from Mr Hunia, nothing has been confi rmed as yet.

Mr Hunia is also a member of the Wainuiomata Bowling Club.

The show would likely run later this year.

Members of the community are being called on once again to support their local sports teams.This weekend the Wainuiomata Jug-glers will be going head-to-head with the Porirua City Pheonix in the grand final of a Wellington rugby league competition.Earlier this year, it was uncertain if the team would make the � nals, but through determination the side has succeeded.As part of this weekend’s game, the Fitzroy Tavern’s Hayden Wilby is encouraging the community get behind the Jugglers.He says he wants to see everyone wearing green and black, and hope-fully there will be a good crowd put together in support.A supporter bus has been organised to take spectators over to Fraser Park on Sunday, with tickets available from the Fitzroy Tavern. Mr Wilby says the bus seats 50 people and will leave the tavern at 10.45am on Sunday, ahead of the game which kicks o� at 11.30am.The Wainuiomata Jugglers is a memo-rial team for local sporting legend Michael “Juggler” Sharp.

Local wrestlers Hayden Thiele and Jade Priest will be crossing over into the Wainuiomata valley this month to show off what got them the title of New Zealand’s youngest tag team champions.

At age 16, the two wrestlers will be taking part in the Over the Top Pro Wrestling event scheduled to run on August 9 at the Wainuiomata Memorial Hall.

While Hayden and Jade are quite well-known in the wrestling fraternity, this will be the first show in front of their home crowd since becoming New Zealand champions in May this year.

The two year 12 students at Wainuiomata High School, started wrestling in 2011 in the under 13 age category through a youth programme run by New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling (NZWPW).

The champion duo will be wrestling on the night, returning to their home town and competing under the name, The Wainui Express.

Hayden and Jade will be coming in on a high after fi ghting in a recent event in the South Island.

Orgnaised by NZWPW, a local wrestling organisation that runs out of Petone, the Wainuiomata-based event is set to be full of energy and a night of family entertain-ment.

A spokesperson from NZWPW says the event is always one of the most exciting features of the year, with competitors fighting for top spots on the road to Powerplay XI.

Both Hayden and Jade will have their hands full as they defend their titles at the Wainuiomata event, which will also feature a 20 man ‘Royal Rumble’ style match up.

Tag team champions homecoming

Playing in near gale force winds over the weekend, Wainuiomata took out its under 85kg counter-parts Marist St Pats Green in its third to last game of the season.Wainuiomata 80/85s secured the win at St Pats Arti� cial Turf in Rongatai, with the game de� -nitely one of two halves. MSP played well with the wind at their backs using the conditions well; but, the weather did see

both teams struggle. Playing into the strong wind, Wainuiomata made a lot of errors in the tough conditions. MSP had a deserved lead of 17-nil at the break, with Wainuiomata trailing.Wainuiomata started to assert some pressure playing smarter rugby, following three tactical changes at half time. With the changes, it was not long

before the MSP lead was whittled down and a converted try near full time saw Wainuiomata take the game 21-17 – in what has been considered a triumphant comeback.Over the past season, the Wai-nuiomata weight-restricted side has lost 13 players, with some being long term players from last year. Despite this, the side is rebuilding.

Coach Brad Coote says it has been a challenging year, but enjoyable; playing against big-ger and more experienced op-ponents. But he says the camaraderie is second to none.Wainuiomata face Paremata-Plimmerton this weekend and the local players look forward to the last two games, improving as the season nears the end.

Three points was all that separated Wainuiomata from a historical maiden Jubilee Cup victory at Hutt Recreation Ground on Sunday.

While Wainuiomata started the game off well and kept the pressure on throughout the fi rst half, it was Hutt Old Boys Marist that celebrated coming from behind at half time to win 14-11.

The fi rst half saw the Wai-nuiomata pressure fi nally take its toll on HOBM, with lock Shahn Eru scoring a try on the

30 minute mark of the game.Tyler Tane failed to make the

conversion, but made up for the miss with a penalty just before half time. This gave Wainuio-mata an 8-nil lead at the break.

The second half started off as the fi rst fi nished with Wai-nuiomata putting pressure on the HOBM line, but attacking plays could not be converted into points.

HOBM on the other hand could convert, with halfback Sheridan Rangihuna kicking a penalty to put his side back into the game. The score at this stage was 8-3.

Winger Chase Tiatia managed to score which saw HOBM level the points differential; this was followed by another Rangihuna penalty giving the Hutt-based team an 11-8 lead.

Wainuiomata tied the game almost immediately with an-other Tane penalty, but this only saw Rangihuna step up with another penalty for HOBM. This allowed HOBM to extend its lead to 14-11.

Wainuiomata had a late chance to tie the scores with a penalty attempt hear the halfway line, but Tane’s attempt fell short of the uprights.

This was the side’s last chance as HOBM found a way to kill the rest of the game and get a well deserved victory.

Wainuiomata can hold their heads high as it could have won the game if a couple of things went its way.

As always the forward pack played extremely well and the defence was as strong as ever.

The one thing the club can be most proud of is the way that the Wainuiomata community got behind the team, with a huge number of fans making the trip over the hill to support the team.

The duo will also be in the 20 man competition, aiming for a chance to challenge the NZ Heavyweight Championship.

Hayden and Jade tried their hand in the seniors tag team division and showed they had the ability to match it with the best earlier this

year, beating The 20/20 Experi-ence to capture the NZ Tag Team Championship title.

The two Wainuiomata boys have the dream of one day competing with their heroes and maybe becoming champions themselves.

Triumphant comeback sees 80/85s succeed

While Jared Paku’s name is still relatively new in the boxing com-munity, with only three fi ghts under his belt, he is working his way up to the top after his achiev-ment of a North Island title.

The 11-year-old did not let his age diminish his chances of advancing in the sport, leaving a recent event in Rotorua with a championship title for the central North Island.

It was a good opportunity for the young boxer to step up, with the win coming in only his third fi ght ever. His two previous fi ghts did not go his way.

In the lead up to the competi-tion, Jared had been training for 15 months within the Wainuio-mata Boxing Club and is now

working towards his next fi ght.Jared’s mum, Michele Paku,

says she is so proud of her son’s achievement and it was great that he won.

“He had been training and working so hard for it. It’s just…I’m estatic. He did so well,” Ms Paku says.

“Jared really deserved it,” she says.

The young boxer competed in the 36-38kg weight division, getting him the champion title in the mini cadet novice category.

As part of the Rotorua competi-tion, Jared fought in three one and a half minute rounds – with his fi tness being put to the test.

“Boxing has been really good for Jared…It’s been great to see his focus and commitment to the sport,” Ms Paku says.

At this stage, Jared is set to be taking part in an upcoming tournament in Wainuiomata; but this is still to be confi rmed.

Jared is still only an amateur boxer, but Rob Cameron from Wainuiomata Boxing Club says he has potential to make it as a New Zealand champion one day.

The Wainuiomata boxer is giving his all to get better in the sport, learning from young New Zealand champion Raymond Seamanu – who is also a long time friend.

Three other boxers from Wai-nuiomata also went to the Roto-rua championship.

Another busy month has been planned for darts players in Wainuiomata, with August already full in terms of events.August contests include the Rotorua-based na-tional championships which started on Sunday and run until this Friday.Wainuiomata Darts As-sociation singles will be held on Friday 15 with registration closing on the night at around 7pm.Au g u s t 17 w i l l s e e representative players compete against coun-terparts from the Kapi Mana club as part of a rep game competition. The

game will be played away and will start at 1pm.A singles tournament for both men and women will be held on August 23 from 6pm; and a Wainui-omata Darts Association open for pairs – men and women – will be held on August 29. Registrations for the open pairs event close on the night.The last event on the calendar will be the Grif-� ns Mixed Drawn Trebles on August 31. It will start at 1pm.A committee meeting has also been planned for Monday, August 18, at 7.30pm.

Wainuiomata BMX Club is gearing up for a massive season of intense action on the track with its champion-ships set to be held later this year.

The season, set to commence from the beginning of September, will kick off with the club’s annual open day.

The opening event will be held on Saturday, September 6, with registra-tions closing on the day at about 1pm; and racing starting at 2pm.

Club offi cials say everyone is wel-come, both new and old, with enter-tainment on the day being provided by BMX riders of all ages having a go.

Lynn Porter, treasurer of Wai-nuiomata BMX Club, says: “We are expecting 100 plus riders at our open day with riders from around the Wel-lington region coming to show just how well our whole region is doing.”

She says there will be up to six races in each age group, so there will be lots of chances for new riders to

will be readying themselves for the Wainuiomata BMX Championships – set to be held on October 4, 2014.

After the club’s open day, there will be racing every Saturday afternoons; with registrations needed on the day before 2.30pm, ready for racing at 3pm.

Over the past few months, renova-tions have been happening at the Wainuiomata track with the corners of the course getting a reshape ready for tarsealing later this season. The revamp to the track has been happen-ing through working bees, with the community chipping in to help.

For the club’s younger division, for children under seven years of age – Sprockets, training sessions will be every Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm.

Both teams were victorious over the weekend, with Ulalei Wainuio-mata Netball’s premier team winning another game in the Regional Super League competition – and the club’s number two team securing a top four spot.

The club’s number two team scored a comprehensive victory against Convent Old Girls, completely an-nihilating the opposition 45-20.

Ulalei dominated the attack end, with the Convent Old Girls defence having no show against a clinical effort. Its defence also outclassed and out thought the opposition’s shooting circle – seeing them rattled by Ulalei’s defensive effort.

The game was all but over at half time, with Ulalei clearing the bench and all 12 members of the squad having a run.

Player-coach Ressa Lealofi says: “It was a convincing win. Pre-game preparation was excellent and the whole team played well, in particular Moli Tauaneai who worked hard on the second phase play and was great in feeding the shooters, earning her the player of the day.”

With this important victory, Ulalei has secured a top four position on the competition leader board, securing a premier two status for 2015.

The team’s next game is against Dynamic on Saturday, August 9. Tip off is 1.30pm at Walter Nash Stadium.

To the Regional Super League, Ulalei’s premier one side managed a 6-point win over St Mary’s Old Girls, with the fi nal score left at 55-49.

It was a very good win for the side with coach Tunis Cook saying it was

a steady team performance, but a stand-out game by sharp shooter and player of the match Emma Wyma.

“Emma’s leadership has fostered a team culture to be proud of and she can take credit for a lot of the team’s success,” she says.

The team’s next game is against Naenae on Wednesday, August 6. Tip off is 8pm at Walter Nash Stadium as well.

Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball also extended its congratulations to the town’s premier rugby team for a valiant effort in the Jubilee Cup this season.

“We are proud of your efforts as you continue to work hard and build on that pathway, as many players before you that will take us to the promised land...Brilliant effort team,” says a club spokesperson.
