Salisbury School in Richmond is under threat from a "sneaky and underhand" strategy aimed at "strangling the school by stealth", according to Nelson-based La-bour MP Maryan Street.Last week the Waimea Weekly revealed that Salisbury School's roll is falling at an alarming rate with just 17 students left and another four expected to leave at the end of this term.

That represents a significant decline with the roll falling from 71 at the same time in 2011 to 43 in 2012 and just 21 last year and Maryan says she is shocked by those numbers. "I went to the school's last bar-becue for the season last Thursday and dis-covered what the roll was now. I was very shocked, especially as it was blindingly obvious that if the school was given the chance to respond to the huge list of peo-

ple wanting to get into the school, the roll would be much higher."The Ministry of Education controls enrol-ments at Salisbury School and last week it confirmed that there have only been seven

new students enrolled within the last year. Maryan says the by the Minister of Educa-tion, Hekia Parata, had already tried and failed to close the school, replacing it with a community-based wrap-around educa-tion service that involved sending some of the girls to a boys residential college in Halswell in Christchurch.

Easter is coming up. Do you give Easter eggs to loved ones or don’t you bother?

Karen Bryant, Wakefield.

“Yes, I give them to my grand-children, children and my

husband, and normally I get handmade ones.”

Gillian Etherington, Wakefield

“Not usually because there aren’t many of them around. They are mostly in different

parts of the country.”

Colin Bass, Hope.

“My mother usually provides eggs for my children and I

certainly do. We have a great Easter egg hunt planned.”

Guy Thomas, Richmond

“The kids yeah, sometimes we do an Easter egg hunt thing.”

But the school fought the decision and it stayed open when the High Court ruled last year that placing girls in a boys resi-dential college was unlawful and did not take into account the girls’ safety.Salisbury is the country’s only residential special education centre for girls and has been operating for almost 100 years. Now,

Maryan says, the Minister of Education is trying to strangle Salisbury by stealth in-stead of killing it outright.”“I was left to conclude that because the Minister, through her own incompetence, did not get her way last time and was pre-vented from closing the school, she is mak-ing it happen another way - by getting the wrap-around service organisation tasked with assessing applicants to turn people

down. “So she is strangling it by stealth in-stead of killing it outright. Salisbury is not out of the woods yet.”Hekia Parata declined to comment, but the Ministry of Education’s Katrina Casey says “there is no plan to close Salisbury School” despite the “fluctuating” roll. “The school is part of the network of schooling available and there has been no discussion about the point at which the

school will be considered untenable.” Katrina says the school’s roll is “fluctuat-ing” because parents of children with spe-cial education needs are taking advantage of the intensive wrap-around services that are increasingly available in their home communities. There are presently 221 students enrolled in the wrap-around service throughout the country, including 38 girls.

Repeat drunk driver caught in RichmondTasman District Traffic Alcohol Group Police caught two repeat drink-drivers over the weekend, both on the roads in the early hours of the morning. At 3.30am on Saturday a Richmond man with 15 previous drink-driving convic-tions was stopped in Richmond and found to have excess breath alcohol. At the same time on Sunday morning a

car failed to stop for Police on Nile St in Nelson. Sergeant Dave Lauer of the Traffic Al-cohol Group says the driver fled at high speed and crossed over the one lane bridge.“The car became airborne for about 15 metres and took out its sump when it landed, before crashing through a Give

Way sign and hitting a parked car and a fence.”The 22 year old driver has four previous drink driving convictions. He failed an evidential breath test and elected to have a blood test.Sergeant Lauer says the man’s vehicle has been impounded and he would face a range of driving charges.

Richmond Mall is upping se-curity after burglars climbed onto the roof of the mall and cut through the ceiling, before stealing from two retailers last Tuesday night.Richmond Mall manager Be-linda de Clercq says the of-fenders only got away with the money that was in the tills of Cuts@Once and The Body Shop, which totalled $800. “It looks like they’ve gone through the air-con vent. Who would think someone would go on to the roof and cut through it?” says Belinda.Police and mall management were unaware of what the of-fenders knew about the two retailers, but Belinda says that both Cuts@Once and The Body Shop did not have an alarm operating that night. “The two stores that they tar-geted are some of the few that don’t have alarms or sensors and the fact they knew that they’re leaving the money in the tills was like they’ve been under observation.”A spokesperson from Cuts@Once says it was “really disrup-tive” to business.

“That’s a lot of haircuts to re-coup that [stolen money] and when people just take from you it’s a lot of work,” she says. “You don’t expect them to come through the roof. Who knows the minds of these people and what they do?”The damage to the Richmond Mall is likely to cost $2000, says Belinda. Because it was raining, some water leaked through the hole in the roof. Belinda has already been in dis-cussions with Nelson Alarms about how they can prevent ac-cess onto the roof from mem-bers of the public.

“We will be blocking off that area in some way or form so people can’t access it. Apart from this, there are some chil-dren that come onto the roof and put cones on it and it’s quite dangerous. “We’ve got fans, air-con units and skylights and if people walk on the wrong area they can fall right through to the mall. It’s not a play place.”Police say a break-in through the roof was not a common oc-currence at all. They have conducted scene ex-aminations and are reviewing CCTV footage.

The first stage of the upgrade of Rich-mond's main street is underway and the project is “critical” for the town with the bottom of the current stormwater pipes so old the bottom of them has worn out.Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and councillor Judene Edgar say completing the project will be critical to the future growth of the town. The estimated $8 million upgrade of Queen St is one of the major projects in the council's long term plan and flood modelling is already underway, with the design stage timed for 2014-2015 and con-struction from 2015 to 2016. Although the council has cut a number of projects from next year's draft annual plan to reduce debt, Richard and Judene say the Queen St upgrade "is not an optional luxury item" .

"There's a perception that the upgrade is an optional, luxury item designed to beautify Queen St but that perception is wrong," says Judene. "The main reason for the up-grade is to replace the street's stormwater system so we can prevent a repeat of the flooding that hit Queen St businesses in April last year."Richard labels the project as "one of the most compelling infrastructure upgrades for council" and says it cannot be delayed any longer. "The stormwater pipes are past their use by date and the floods we have had over the last two years underlined this. It's a real issue for Richmond and it needs to be resolved."The council's programme delivery man-ager, Russell McGuigan, says the aim of the project is to "have a stormwater system

that takes a 20 year flood and a secondary flow path that uses the road as a river that takes a 100 year flood". He says the exist-ing stormwater system is inadequate while the road is higher in some places than the shops making them vulnerable to flood-ing. "The stormwater is so old the bottom of some of the pipes have worn out," Rus-sell says. "We put a CTV camera in to have look a while ago and it fell right out the bottom."Although the underground work will be a priority, Judene says it makes sense to up-grade the road, footpaths, parking spaces

and other streetscape features "while we have bare earth". The beautification ele-ments have only been allocated $200,000 of the $8million budget. "There are a lot of different aspects to this project and they all feed into it."Judene says it will be critical for council to consult the community about the project and they plan to form a stakeholder work-ing group with retailers and businesses to provide feedback. Once the design stage has been completed, work will commence in 2015-2016 and Russell says that will take less than a year. It is likely that contractors will be working at night to minimise disruption to retail-ers and shoppers on Queen St. "At no point will the street be stopped and that's a very important part of our planning.”

MOVIE NIGHT: Seth Delport, Jess Quiney, Judah Delport and Tenielle Delport at the Grace Church Family Movie Night on Saturday. The family movie night was a “great success” with dozens of families turning up on the rainy evening to enjoy the animated movie, “Planes”. Jean Phipps, of Grace Church, says it was a really good turn-out of families. “These days it’s quite expensive for families to do things together, so it was a great opportunity for families to have an affordable and enjoyable night out.” Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The Nelson Vintage Car Club’s 50th an-niversary celebrations were tied in with Heritage Week, which seems fitting for the Topliss family whose own family her-itage traces back to the club’s beginning. The late George Topliss was one of the Nelson Vintage Club’s founding mem-bers, and his two sons David and Richard are current members, along with grand-son James. The trio were in attendance for the 50th anniversary, which culmi-nated in a gymkhana and public open day at Richmond Park on Sunday, after a rally through the Moutere to Motueka on Saturday.George’s 1926 Morris Bull Nose was used in the club’s very first rally in 1964, and it was there again 50 years later, driven by grandson James. “This was his car and it’s been in the family ever since. James had the opportunity to drive it in the 50th rally. It was a great opportunity to bring it out,” says Richard. George was an engineer by trade, and his interest in vintage cars finally led to ownership in the 60s when he bought the Morris Bull Nose in Blenheim, following the Picton Car Rally. “His father was an engineer too and mechanical things such as cars were always in his life. He brought this over to Nelson and restored it. He had a number of cars but this was his first one. He enjoyed old cars and the engi-

neering of them.”Other vintage cars, which George was well known for owning, including a 1924 Rolls Royce and a 1943 Rover, were also on show. “Dad used the Rolls once he re-stored it virtually until the day he died, so Richard had the Morris until James has started using it,” says David.David and Richard remember going for rides in the vintage cars with their par-ents, sitting in the dickie seat of the Mor-ris. However, the membership of the club was much smaller back then. “People used to ring up their friends and we’d go out for a picnic very regularly,” he says. “That was in the 1960s and 70s. You basi-cally had to be a restorer to get a car go-

ing. These days you can buy a restored car and that’s the big change.”Just like their father before them, David and Richard agree that the early exposure to motoring is what created the interest in vintage cars. “I suppose we were just brought up with them as kids. They’re quite different to drive compared to a modern car. With a modern car you just turn the key and you can drive, with these you’re continually changing the spark timing, the fuel mixture, so it’s certainly not automatic,” says Richard.Richard says the membership of the club would be close to 250, which was a trib-ute to the work George and the original committee had done in the early days.

Underwater timers for swim-mers, multi-function tools for sports shoes and high-tech school bags were just some of the innovative products devel-oped by Waimea College year 10 and 11 students for the by the Young Enterprise Trust’s BP Business Challenge.Seventy students enlisted for last week’s challenge which involved forming companies to research, design, manufac-ture and market a hypothetical product. The three-day chal-lenge ended on Friday when the companies presented their business plan to a panel of judges who said they were all impressed by the young entre-preneurs.Student and chief executive of Dive In Time, Olivia Wells, says their company designed an underwater timing device for swimmers. The device featured a digital monitor worn like a watch, that interfaced with a computer to display the swim-mer’s speed, lap times, laps and distance - it also received input from the swimmer’s coach.“Caitlin (Delany) is a swimmer and she thought it would be a really useful thing to have, so we developed it from there,” Olivia says. “The first thing we had to do

was look at what was already in the market and try and im-prove on that.”Olivia says everyone in the company had designated roles with Renee Waghorn facing some of the biggest challenges as finance officer. “It was really hard to make a budget because we had to find out what every-thing cost,” Renee says.Company marketing manager Meg Taylor says the target mar-ket for their product would be competitive swimmers, swim-ming coaches and clubs and swim schools.Sport was also the theme for another company, Spike 360, which developed a multi-use tool for removing and tighten-ing a range of studs and spikes

in sports shoes. The winning team, Zip It’s in-novative product was a com-partmentalised backpack for students. The compartments were designed to be zipped on and off so the student wouldn’t need to carry a big, overloaded bag around. Business studies teacher Naomi Chapman says the challenge was a valuable exercise for the students because it gave them a glimpse of the real business world. It introduced them to business basics such as strate-gic planning, marketing, pro-duction, finance, innovation and teamwork so they could work together to create a busi-ness plan and present their ide-as to judges.

When Kane Bint graduated to become a St John volunteer 12 years ago he didn’t quite realise how quickly he was going to be called on. Driving from Christchurch to Nelson, Kane drove around a corner to find a car implanted in the back of a hay bailer in Marlborough, and he was the first on the scene. “I was literally still feeling hap-py that I’d completed the basic training when it happened and it was a really bad one. They say you remember your first and I definitely do.”Kane is one of 40 volunteers that give up a minimum of 24 hours a month to work for St John from its Nelson or Rich-mond station, but the organi-sation is after more and will be hosting an information even-ing later this month.Shift manager Kris Gagliardi says St John needs at least six volunteers every day, and vol-unteers are either rostered on

as the “second member” of an ambulance crew, assigned to assist the paid member, or in the events team which attends events like fairs, rugby games and speedway. He says the ideal candidates have some time to give, are realistic about the role and that it is often quite mundane and not all “emergencies and sirens”, compassionate and ideally have an interest in the science of patient care and find

diseases and illness interesting.Kane says the benefits of NZQA qualifications, working for a dedicated team and the thrill of giving back to your community are all part of the reason why he’s involved.Applicants need to have a rea-sonable level of fitness and a current full driver’s licence for three years. Last week we were really disappointed to catch 16 drink drivers in our weekend oper-ation and the district commander was quot-ed in the media saying we would be keeping a close eye on this. This past weekend we had the Traffic Alco-hol Group working from 3am on both Satur-day and Sunday mornings, and on both days they came across drivers who I consider a real risk to public safety. The first, a 53 year old Richmond man with 15 previous convictions for drink-driving, blew 782 mic, almost double the legal alco-hol limit. He was out and about at 3.30 am.At exactly the same time on Sunday morn-ing they came across a young man, who at just 22 years of age, already had four previ-ous convictions for drink driving. When people keep making the same stupid decisions as these two clearly have, it really worries me that it's only a matter of time before they kill or maim some innocent person. As it was the younger of these two drivers continued to demonstrate his poor decision-making abilities by fleeing from the officer at high speed and crashing sec-onds later.Thankfully he was unharmed in the crash, however he has done significant damage to other people's property. My staff have the unfortunate job of deal-ing with the repercussions of other people's poor decisions on virtually a daily basis and it can be a very unpleasant job. Families' and friends' worlds crumble be-fore their eyes and even innocent bystanders with no connection to the parties involved suffer from the trauma of what they have seen. None of this has to happen and the solution is simple - if you're going to drink make a plan for getting home that doesn't involve driving. If you know someone who is regularly taking risks by drinking and driving, give us a call and hopefully we can stop them before too much damage is done.

Air New Zealand:Would probably be in the best inter-est of Air NZ to offer a simple flight

discount for “medical” related flights, such as those specified requiring travel by DHB. This is simple enough to do, so the real question is why would a subsidised airline (supported in part by tax money) not offer discounts for DHB related flights? Moreo-ver, the ideology that keeps being present-ed that “free market” will address the need/issue is pathetic, as anyone who has taken Macroeconomics knows full well there is no such thing as free market.Air NZ, shame on you for not even trying to address the obvious need for medical related travel dictated by DHBs. I’m not suggesting everyone can just get 20 per cent discount on flights because they are visiting a hospital, but when DHBs define the requirement. ACC covers the medical costs, it is serious price gouging that keeps airlines ticketing travellers at that rate. nelsoniantraveler (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

I read your article with interest. Our experience with Air NZ, my

husband and I booked Nelson to San Fran-cisco return. I made a mistake and booked the first part Auckland to Nelson instead of Nelson to Auckland. As we were flood-ed out of our home, we did not print elec-tronic tickets until a week before we were due to leave. We then picked up the error. They charged us $680 as we had to rebook

a whole new flight one way to Auckland we were given a refund of $10 each for our bags. This was last year and was a bitter ex-perience considering we were flying all the way to San Francisco with them. We had insurance but this did not cover my mis-take. N Robertson.

Please keep up the reporting on the Air NZ costs. We are among the

many who have regular commuters inthe family, so my interest is obvious. The cancellation of ‘Starfish’ will make it more difficult. Anyway, I really only wanted to thank you for highlighting other aspects of the Air NZ pricing. We have plenty of eye-watering price stories but I’m sure you have many. Many Thanks, Belinda Reburn.

Salisbury School’s declining roll:Declining roll (which the Minis-try controls) is just another way

for the Ministry to shut this school down. For any struggling parent who needs to get their daughter into this school, you actu-ally have the right to insist this is the only appropriate option you will accept. I have dealt with the Ministry for my own son and have had success through the Resi-dential Schools McKenzie (closed by Min-istry) and Westbridge. Residential Schools have skilled resources 24/7 and they can influence positive behavioural changes. As a parent you simply don’t have the energy and patience to provide the specialist sup-

port that a residential school can. Mark (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

I can’t see how it can stay open with so few pupils. Brenda Kenny.

How much is it costing to run for a mere 17 students?

Alison Lonsdale.

The government has changed the rules for eli-

gibility of enrolment. Of course the roll has decreased. It is such a pity that the people who make these decisions do not realise the benefits so many girls and fami-lies have received from Salisbury. Salisbury will be forced to close and the so-called wrap-around services will also cease after a period of time, and then what? Carol Stewart.

Hekia couldn’t close it be-fore so they’ve changed

tack to make it harder to get in. That’s not to say their services are needed any less, it means nation-al have invented criteria that is harder to reach. Sharon Nicholls.

Holy moly. Had no idea there were only 17 pupils.

And people here fought so hard

to keep the place open. Janelle Thorpe.

They were prevented from taking enrolment while there was a chance

it was closing, now it’s staying open I’m sure the roll will increase again. Jolene Rushbrooke.

Sam Airy, who teaches courses in business building and entrepreneurship through Auckland and Hamilton Community Education programmes recently presented his findings to those of us

involved in running Adult Education using secondary school facilities. Here’s what people say they like about community education classes:• The social interaction with the class• Programmes have been proven so it must be okay• Courses are structured• We can ask questions• Education and learning can be customised to

what I need• Inspiring, motivating Tutors• Feel cared for and looked after• Energy and dynamics of classesCommunity Education classes can provide stuff that

the internet usually doesn’t …such as responsiveness to our community, a class or individuals; more personalised classes; supplementary materials; refreshments and social interaction.

Nayland College’s Adult Community Education Programme receives no Government funding! It continues to exist due to the amazing tutors and motivated adults who value lifelong learning. Grants from Canterbury Community Trust and Nelson City Council this year are enabling us to look into ways of making a community education infrastructure sustainable while keeping classes affordable, accessible and open to all members of the Nelson community. Primary school students have been given a heck of a history lesson and from this weekend it’s open to the public. The Dramatix Theatre Develop-ment Trust – made up of locals – has built a reputation for its Anzac Experience, formally called Lest We Forget, held each year around Anzac Day. But this year they’ve added a new dimension with nighttours of a World War trench, as well as a history lesson for primary schools. Organiser TJ Ramsay says the school tours, which are run-ning this week, have been a huge hit. “It’s very real and very scary for them, but they come out pumped

and the teachers tell me they want to learn more when they get back to school, so that’s what it’s all about.”The new night-time Trench Tours at Founders Heritage Park are R16 and will be held this Saturday and Sunday. They are the third part of the living history event with the Anzac Experience to start on An-zac Day. This year it will feature a reconstruction of the Tapawera Training Camp, complete with drill and kit inspections.Booking for the night tours are es-sential and are $10 per person. OPINION: There are four very com-pelling reasons for the Tasman Dis-trict Council to back pedal on its decision to cut $600,000 from the Tasman Great Taste Trail’s budget for 2014-2015.The first reason is simple. Money. A staggering 10,847 riders were counted riding past just one point on the trail near the Waimea Inlet last summer and many of them would have stopped at cafes, shops, motels, camping grounds and win-eries along the way. And that eco-nomic spin-off will only increase once the 175 kilometre loop is com-pleted and can be marketed inter-nationally as a tourist destination. If councillors have any doubts about the economic benefits of cycle trails they only need to look at the Otago Rail Trail which recorded an 11 per cent growth in numbers last year despite increasing competition from other trails around the coun-try and injected $14 million a year into the regional economy. The second reason is that the trail is generating so many social and health benefits with hundreds of families from around the region getting on their bikes and spend-ing quality time together. Legions of older residents are also joining regular riding groups on the trail, improving their well-being and fit-ness.Although it is harder to put a dol-lar figure on these benefits, they are just as important, if not more important than generating tourist dollars because a happier, healthier society is priceless. Reason three is that the cycle trail is providing a safer option for so

many cycle commuters, especial-ly children who use it to ride to school. A New Zealand Transport Agency study showed that 60 per cent of pupils at Broadgreen Inter-mediate, which is near the Railway Reserve, cycled to school. That im-pressive statistic can be replicated at other schools including Wake-field and Tapawera as soon as the cycle trail is completed and passes their gates. The final reason is that the trail will be cheap to run and be great value for ratepayers’ money. Although there has been some debate about maintenance costs of the trail, with council estimating $200,000 per year and the Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trail Trust saying it will be $90,000 when in reality it will probably be somewhere in the middle, that rep-resents a bargain. Compared to the cost of operating and maintaining roads, footpaths, parks and re-serves, libraries which run into the millions, the cycle trail is a steal. Two years ago, council backped-alled on a decision to cut funding for the cycle trail from its Long Term plan for 2012 to 2019. That proved to be a smart move allowing the wonderful coastal section to be completed and ensuring the project maintained its momentum.Let’s hope councillors make anoth-er smart decision and reinstate the $600,000 for the cycle trail when they finalise next year’s annual plan. What are your thoughts? Four reasons to rethink trail cuts

When Derek Milton was just a boy, he didn’t know what the Dawn Service was. He just knew it was very dark outside and that it was some-thing special for his grandfather Jack Sloan to attend. “There were all of these ex soldiers march-ing along in virtual qui-etness and it was quite eerie. I remember going down and watching it and seeing my grandfather do that,” he says. “Grow-ing up I always had a re-ally strong bond with my grandfather and I re-member going to a couple of the Dawn Services as a young child with him.”Having been announced as a successful applicant in the ballot, to attend the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings in Gal-lipoli next year, Derek and his wife Donnella will be remembering Jack at the battlegrounds he fought in a century ago. “I’m re-ally privileged to go. It’s a heck of an honour to be there. We’ve been attend-ing the Mapua Anzac Day Service for quite a few years. If we hadn’t got in it wouldn’t have been the be all and end all, but we always planned to go there one day and see where he landed and where he fought. It’s a heck of a place apparently.”A total of 9851 applicants entered the ballot to attend the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings in Gallipoli next year. The 950 dou-ble passes have been allocated and 100 special

passes have been held back to be issued to spe-cial representatives at a later date. All of the suc-cessful applicants must pay their own way and for their accommodation. However, entry to the

services is free.Derek plans to go to Gal-lipoli in memory of his late grandfather, who died in 1982. Jack, originally from Invercargill, was a sapper, a soldier who performed a variety of military engineering du-ties. “He talked about it and had lots of stories. He was wounded in a place called Flers in France. He sustained a machine gun bullet which ripped out part of his left lung. But he stayed on right until the end.”Derek says Jack admitted he was “absolutely terri-fied” of the war.His favourite story was when his grandfather was sent out to collect bodies during a cease fire. “He shared a Turkish coffee and a cigarette with one of the Turkish soldiers. Then

it was back to the lines shooting one another. It just seems so bizarre; they’re out there kill-ing each other and then shared a cigarette and a coffee. He was a very outgoing guy, was really friendly and just loved people.”Derek and Donnella will take Jack’s Gallipoli medal, which is dated 1915, to the 100th anni-versary. “It’s definitely going with us as a memo-ry of him. We’re just so privileged to go.”

Most real estate companies have huge databases of real estate contacts. These databases are created by recording contacts from open homes, enquiries, personal contacts, sales and buyers.

Current buyers will be on all company databases. Buyers are keen to know of new listings. They are scanning the web sites every day and they are attending all of the open homes in their price bracket, so they will be known by all real estate companies.

How many genuine buyers are there at any one time? Probably not as many as you may think and the amount will be price related. The number of properties sold every month is an indication of the

Our line dance birthday week-end went really well. We had dancers come from Paihia, Auckland, Dunedin, Marlbor-ough, West Coast, Christch-urch and of course Nelson and Tasman. Two nights of non-stop dancing. Usually in a night we will manage to dance around 50-55 dances. Now that is a lot of dancing. Mike and Chrissie Perkins, the Editors of the NZ Beat Line Dancing Magazine, from Christchurch were in attend-

ance. They came up to present Sue and Danuta, Club Section Leaders, with two of the three awards Sioux Dance won at the recent NZ Line Dance Awards held in Cambridge.Sue won the NZ Workshop In-structor of the year.Danuta and Sue won Best Monthly Column written to the Line Dance MagazineSue’s mother Megan, won the third award, for Best Article to the Line Dance Magzine.Sue and Danuta are now pre-

paring for another large week-end event they hold in Han-mer Springs each year. They then travel to Brisbane and Sydney for more dancing and return to Paihia for Sue to DJ and take the Workshop at Paihia Country Music Festi-val.Sue says anyone is welcome to come and join them dancing each Wednesday night. There will be a couple of weeks off whilst they travel at the end of April and early May.

Are there any volunteer bus drivers who may be able to drive the Club`s Courtesy Coach on a Friday or Saturday evening?

If so please contact the manager at Club Waimea on 543 9179

‘The best place to take a leak!’

Stacy Bint, Knoxy, Bradley and Sheena Evans are the team at Richmond Radiator and Exhaust Specialists. They work on trucks, tractors, custom race cars, domestic, per-formance and vintage vehicles. You name it, they can fit an exhaust on it. That flexibility also applies to ra-diators. Bradley is their radiator specialist and can repair as well as replace. He can make anything, from your little car heaters radia-tor right through to radiators for log haulers, diggers and trucks to your daily commuter. Their competitive advantage

comes from Bradley’s 19 years ex-perience in the radiator industry. He was trained by old-school tech-nicians who worked on early vin-tage vehicles, and his skills go as far as hand fabricating and making a vintage radiator from scratch. “A lot of places will say no it’s stuffed, throw it away - you need to get another one. But if it’s repair-able I’m your man,” says Bradley. Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists are a part of the Adrad National Radiators network, which

carries the most extensive range of engine cooling products in New Zealand, from complete radiators and radiator tanks to radiator cores. There are 20 shops within the network and Richmond Exhausts and Radia-tors are the shop for the whole of the top of the South Island, from Kaikoura and West Coast north. As well as supplying

products, the Adrad network means you, as a customer, can get assistance anywhere in New Zealand.Richmond Exhaust and Radia-tor Specialists likes all interac-tions with customers to be light-hearted, honest and friendly. Their commitment to providing people with a genuine service is evident in their attitude towards

quoting on work. “We would rather over quote and talk in worst-case-scenario than underestimate to get the job in the door, because our pri-ority is honesty, happy custom-ers and quality products. Our pricing includes GST, not plus GST, so there are no hidden costs,” Sheena says. “We respect our customers

Downer Utilities donates bowls for childrenDowner Utilities, maintenance contractors of Tasman District Council’s water, wastewater and storm water systems, has donated a set of “Jun-ior Ace” bowls to Wakefield Bowling Club with another set donated by club members John and Wendy Mills-Ramage. John is the Downer Utili-ties’ contract manager.

Several children have attended the community bowls sessions during the summer. The club al-ready has one set of these bowls bought with a grant from Tasman District Council and this has proved very popular with children who come along with their parents or grandparents. The club is very grateful for this donation of two more sets of these small size bowls which will help more children experience the game. The club will be running sessions for children during the school holidays on Wed 30 April and Thursday 1 May from 10am – 12noon. Anzac Day at Wakefield Vil-lageRev. Allan Wasley, Vicar of Wakefield with Murchison parishOver the eight years I have been attending these parades in the village hall then out at the cenotaph, they have al-ways impressed me as won-derfully well attended family events. Groups like the pip-pins, guides, scouts etc come dressed in uniform with their own poppies etc. The R.S.A. now find their parades con-sist of our final ww2 vet, Ira, and vets from the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Timor and Afghanistan. What makes it so heart warming, is the buy-in from the community to celebrate the victories which have given us peace. Having the service at 10am means all ages can come and reflect on the sacrifices made, the lives given, and the wonderful gift of freedom we enjoy in NZ. Historically ministers and priest were called padres in the forces and gave solace and comfort to those in the battle far from home, in sickness and in death. The hope of the victory of Christ at Easter has often given these soldiers a faith to hold on to, the prom-ise of life beyond death, and the encouragement that they

were not on their own. We do hope there will be a great turn out again this 25 April, so that a new generation re-calls the sadness of war, but also the triumph of standing up for what is right, and the sharing between Kiwi and Aussies that mean we remain the best of mates when at-tacked.

Wakefield Rest Home wel-comes new managerThree months ago Melin-da Kelly joined the staff at Wakefield Rest Home as the new Rest Home Manager which is now benefiting from her love of the place, the people and the job. Melinda previously worked overseas as a district nurse for a home care company and started in Wakefield in January. “I just really love it here, the residents and locals are so welcoming and the staff are all great to work with. They are loyal and dedicated to their job which is a vital part of the homely atmosphere. I just couldn’t think of a better place to work.” Melinda says. Right now the rest home is focusing on welcoming the community back into its fold. “We want the community to feel free to come in and take the residents out, bring in

crafts to show to them or just play your favourite instru-ment.” Wakefield Rest Home are so lucky being close to the local shops the residents are free to come and go without being restricted to the home. They welcome you to visit anytime.

A snapshot of Wakefield Real Estate Wendy Pearson, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, Heyward Realty Ltd (REAA) Wakefield is proving a popu-lar destination for home buy-ers with many people mov-ing to Wakefield to enjoy the friendly community and vil-lage atmosphere. In the current real estate mar-ket, we are finding we have a burst of buyer activity in re-sponse to new listings, and busy initial open homes, and then buyer enquiry generally goes much quieter for the duration of the listing period. For this reason it is especially important to market your home at the correct price as over priced properties can sit on the market for a while. We are often getting just one or two serious buyers in those first few weeks of marketing, and if you aren’t un-der offer

at the start of the marketing process, it can take a bit long-er to find that perfect buyer. When we reduce the price of the properties not under of-fer in that first month of mar-keting, we sometimes find we have more than one offer at the new price. So buyers are around, they are just very “price sensitive” and usually well informed as to market conditions and prices. If you are looking for excel-lent value for your money, and a welcoming and friendly community, come to Wake-field for your next home.

Wakefield lawn bowler wins national eventWakefield Bowling Club member, Arnold Mason, has won the national final of the Grants whiskey sponsored “Corner to Corner” competi-tion with a prize of $3000 for the Club.As the name suggests, this involves bowling diagonally across the green, the closest bowl to the opposite corner over several knockout rounds being the winner.Arnold, who serves as the club treasurer, is delighted with the win.

Linda and Peter Sisterson with Chris Longman welcome home Arnold Mason (centre) after his success winning the national final of Grants Cor-ner to Corner.

Jet has had a tough life. The five-month-old labrador-staffy cross was hit by a car and lost a back leg and then ended up homeless in the Motueka SPCA. But now things are finally looking up.Jet has been selected for The Ark’s training programme which started this week and is getting plenty of love from his new best friend and the rest of the team at the Ark. He’s also learning new tricks under the

guidance of the Ark’s dog trainer Susan Walsh and his young teenaged companion. All he needs now is a foster home for 12 weeks while he completes his training at the Ark.Susan says Jet has a lovely nature and gets around just fine on his three legs. He would make a great family pet when he comes up for adoption at the end of the Ark training.

“All of the dogs have been selected to come into the programme so they all have an ap-titude for training. Jet is a lovely dog,” she says. The Ark will provide all the food and pay for any vet bills for anyone who fosters any of their dogs. All the foster home needs to do is look af-ter Jet and if possible transport him to the Ark’s training centre on Paton Rd in Hope

three mornings a week, although the Ark can help with that too.Susan says people can also foster a dog on a trial basis and then adopt the dog after the trial. She says that’ ensures that people get the perfect best friend.Anyone who is interested in fostering Jet for 12 weeks please contact the Ark on 542 3866 or email them at [email protected]

LOVED SAVED FREE

Celebrate EasterBy Nitika Ennion, Grace Church When I think of Easter I get so excit-ed! Yes the chocolate is exciting, and so is the thought of a long weekend chilling with my family. But what is more exciting is the fact that Easter is a time to celebrate a climactic point of time in history. It is a season to reflect on the fact that since the beginning of time, God had a purpose to re-deem mankind, to draw them back to Himself. So we celebrate! Yes, the suffering of Jesus on the cross was something to mourn. But, the reality is that the cross was not the final resting place for Jesus. The story of Easter does not finish there. Jesus rose again and is now alive and seated in heaven. Right now that is His position! What does this mean for us? Well Jesus said that when He went to heaven He would send the Counse-lor - the Holy Spirit. He hasn’t gone to heaven and abandoned us here on earth. When we accept Him into our lives His Spirit comes to live in us.

Jesus died so that we might live!So are you living? Are you really liv-ing in the freedom that Christ paid for you when He died on the cross? Or are you living under the bur-

dens of worry, guilt, fear, loneliness or any-thing else the world can throw at us? Yes, these are all real circum-stances in our lives. But God is a real God! He has the power to save, the power to re-store, the power to re-deem broken lives. The Bible says that “If the

Son sets you free then you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36). Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that we would just get by. He said “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10). I don’t know about you, but when I look back on my life, I want to see a life that has been lived outrageously in the full-ness of all that Jesus paid for on the cross. He did it for you and for me.This Easter let’s celebrate the life and freedom that Jesus bought for us - and let’s live it with all we’ve got!

Just a thought

By Fr David Gruschow I don’t know about you, but it seems that every time I am going somewhere for a few days, it takes ages to work through the innumerable lit-tle tasks that suddenly present themselves. If I don’t do this carefully, then I am bound to leave something undone that must really be done, or leave something behind that is vital! As has been said, ‘the devil is in the details!’Perhaps it is the same with the story of Easter. You might remember the accounts of the devastated women and men followers of Jesus. How their grief was turned to joy with the stupendous news of the resurrection of Jesus from the

dead. The little ‘details’ in the stories are vital, for they lend credence to what is truly ex-traordinary. What is also tru-

ly extraordinary is the conse-quent offer of new life now to each and every one of us and

our loved ones, living here on earth - or living in eternity. Those details in the resurrec-tion story then are significant as are the details in our own story as well. Each of us I’m sure can remember times when our sorrow, our dread, our fear, our frustration were turned unexpectedly to joy and peace. These are times when we become aware in a special way that God is at work in our lives. God just loves bringing us that new-ness, vitality and joy that we all yearn for: God loves ac-complishing that personal and communal transforma-tion that is an essential part and promise of the Easter story.

The devil is in the details

You can join the Easter celebrations at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 35 William St, Rich-mond and St Joseph’s Church, Pitfure Rd, Wakefield.

www.shuttersport.co.nzSPORTMurchison withdrawDown to “the bare bones”, Murchison have pulled out of senior rugby, relinquishing the chance to defend the division two champion-ship they have won for the past two years. With just 13 players committing at the start of the 2014 season, club president and coach Tony Peacock says the writing was on the wall. “It’s very disappointing. We’ve lost a lot of play-ers from last year through retirement, injuries, guys moving away, but we just lost too many,” he says. “We just couldn’t get the numbers.”Murchison played just one game in the first three rounds of the Car Company division two competition, a 39-27 loss to Collingwood away. Tony says a school kid and a former player now living in Ashburton made one-off appearances to support the team. “A couple of weeks out from the start of the season we knew we’d be struggling, but then we had a couple more in-juries which didn’t help. The writing was on the wall from the start.”The announcement is a huge blow for the club which had experienced its best ever years since forming back in 1906. Tony says Murchison has fielded a team in division two ever since 2006, having played in the now-defunct divi-sion three since 1995. It had previously entered in the Buller Rugby Union competition, and a Motueka-Golden Bay championship before that. After winning the competition over the past two years, coaches Mike Huxford and D’Arcy Grooby stood down, ending their spells on a high. Tony was set to take over, but will now have to wait an entire season before get-ting a shot. Tony says some of the senior players are likely to register with Tapawera, Wander-ers or Marist now, and although the numbers were low in junior rugby, the club was commit-

ted to having another successful junior season by continuing its relationship with Tapawera. “This will be a huge loss for the town but hope-fully it encourages people to support us more next year.”

Despite the grim looking weather on Friday morning, the 2014 Nel-son Junior Open went on without a hitch, and plenty of local players picked up victories.129 players from the ages 8 to 18 competed in 17 different events, which saw the Tasman Tennis Club in Richmond overflowing with players and parents enjoying both the atmosphere and the fan-tastic tennis. Entries from Wellington, Marlbor-ough, Christchurch and the West Coast spiced up the tournament, giving our local players a run for their money. Luke Brown of the Tasman Tennis Club won the boys 10s doubles with Jordan Edwards of Christchurch, but then lost to his partner in the singles final.Emma Langford and Rani McGuire took out the girls 10s doubles, beating Stoke

pair Grace Meehan and Hannah Young. The singles was then won by Farrah Richards of Nelson. In the girls 14s doubles, local pair Nicole Mairs and Amy Hurst got the better of Jordan Berry and Anna Crimp. But Jor-dan got revenge in the singles, conceding

just five games in three matches to win the 14/16’s girls singles grade.Henry Neas and Ben Petley were victorious in the boys 18s doubles event, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 over Melle Van Duijn and Aidan Mc-Kenzie. But Melle proved too strong in the 16 year old boys singles. The 14 year old boys singles had the largest entry tally of the com-petition, with 27 players compet-ing for the title. Number three seed Ben Hazlett of Nelson had a fantas-tic competition, beating both the number one and two seeds en route

to the championship. Sean Zumbraegel of Christchurch, who was number 2 seed and last year’s winner lost to Henry Neas of Nelson 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the boys 18s singles. There were no finals in this grade, but Henry and Sean’s match ended up deciding the title.

It was a weekend for fine tuning, with netball teams competing in the annual Geraldine Hodg-son Tournament as they prepare for the upcom-ing season.Thirty teams competed in five grades over the two days. As there were only four entries in the A Grade, the teams played only on Sunday. A round-robin was played with four quarters of ten minutes each. Central Men from Blenheim won the grade as they swept all before them with their physical presence and sheer speed through court. While Jacks OPD had the experience of the Mainland Super Club competition some weeks ago, Sunday’s games were another oppor-tunity to fine tune their roster. Jacks went on to defeat Prices Pharmacy A and Prices Pharmacy Black to finish second. Nelson College for Girls beat Garin College in the B Grade, while Huia won the C grade and Rival Jade took out the D and E Grades respectively.

Chilando is more than just a fast food joint. It prides itself on giving Nelsonians a healthy and delicious alternative option for lunch or dinner with 95% of their menu being Gluten Free. Chi-lando was created after it was noticed that New Zealand lacked authentic Mexican fast food at a fair price. Although Chilando do few de-lightful things, they do them exceptionally well and you can enjoy their food without it affect-ing your wallet. Owner Miguel Kader fell in love with Nelson when he visited back in 2008 and moved here so he could introduce Chi-lando’s great food to Nelsonians. Chilando has gained a reputation for top quality food, fast service and fair prices and nothing makes the team at Chilando hap-pier than having happy customers. They try their level best to create exquisite traditional Mexican dishes so that you can enjoy the authentic taste of Mexico. Try their Mexican specialities such as the Grande Quesadillas, the soft shell Tacos, their mouth watering Burritos, tender marinated meats, Chilli Con Carne or their tasty home-made guacamole.

They also have a delicious range of thirst quench-ing Jarrito’s Mexican Soda’s in Mexi-Cola, Pine-apple, Guava, Mandarin and Lime flavours or try their selection of Mexican beer. Apart from local vegetables and meat, most of the ingredi-ents are sourced direct from Mexico allowing

Chilando to consist-ently deliver authentic cuisine which is made fresh on site every day. Their lunches are made right in front of you and take less than two minutes while their evening dining is a chance for you to relax with restaurant qual-ity service and a real margarita. Although dinner bookings are not required, to guar-

antee yourself a table call Miguel at Chilando on 548 4447. With so many satisfied customers you should come on down to Chilando for your next lunch or dinner, you’ll find them at 3/7 Morrison St, Nelson. You don’t have to be a weather guru to realise that our recent run of warm weather might be ending. The week-end has seen a small amount of rain with a much larger amount predicted all this week. This will see the water temperature that has kept good numbers of fish in Tasman Bay drop. While the snap-per numbers may drop off somewhat, there are still good numbers of gurnard and terakhi to be had at The Glen.A few snapper were still about Rabbit Island and the Boulder Bank but not in huge numbers. This would suggest that the fish are moving out to deeper water, and there have been some re-ports of some good fishing around Pepin Island in about 30m of water to back this theory. The best bait that seems to be work-ing at the moment is the old stinky kind that has been in the freezer a while. Barracouda seemed to be es-pecially popular with the snapper last week, as they wouldn’t touch much else.Kenepuru has been much ‘hit and miss’ this season, but over the last couple of weeks some xos snapper have been caught. One of the best ways to fish Kenepuru is to use a stray line rig with 7/0 hooks and a ¼ oz sinker on the incoming tide during the change of light, with plenty of salmon burley flowing. Cast these rigs as you are able, from the rear of the boat into the burley trail, as this is where you are more likely to find those big shy snapper. Remember it may take a couple of

hours of patience.Rumour also had it there were some double-digit fish caught in Mahau sound last weekend in 20 feet of water. Several Dawnbreaker boats also ventured down to D’urville in search of kingfish and groper but found them hard to come by, al-though they did do well with blue cod and other species of fish. The long range forecast isn’t great for the next week with more rain ex-pected right up till Easter Saturday. It will take some time for the dirty water to clear in Tasman Bay and the Inner Sounds once this passes. During and after this time you will need to be very cautious when boat-ing, as there will be heaps of debris in the waterways and usually some of it will be large and partially sub-merged. Hopefully the weather will clear for at least a couple of days over Easter, otherwise a few wives will need sed-atives to calm down the fishermen in their lives and claim their sanity back.

Amongst the 160 entries for this weekend’s Kart-sport New Zealand National Sprint Champion-ship are eight Nelson drivers who are heading across to Blenheim to test themselves against the country’s best. This will be the first time that Josh Bradley (ca-det), Hannah Ross (rotax junior) and Kevin Barker (rotax heavy) have entered the Cresswell Electrical National Championship, while the more experienced drivers Jarod Fisher (junior restricted), Clarke McFadzien (junior rotax),

Brendon Gridley (rotax heavy), Matt Butchard (KZ2), and Teneill Rasmussen (rotax light) will be expecting some strong results, having com-peted there before. All the Nelson drivers are familiar with the long Marlborough circuit, so even the less experi-enced competitors will have some confidence go-ing into the national championship, which starts on Friday with qualifying. The races will be split, with half on Saturday and half on Sunday.

SG Waimea Old Boys RugbyWaimea Old Boys RugbyWaimea hope for a good FridayStar & Garter Waimea Old Boys will be hoping for an early Easter gift when they take on the unbeaten Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers on Good Friday. But Wanderers are unlikely to be in the giving mood, having been embarrassed in last year’s Car Company division one final 55-21, the last time the two teams met.Wanderers are the competition’s form team, and have beaten Marist, Nel-son, Stoke and Kahurangi in the past four weeks. While Waimea’s record is just one short of perfect, having lost to

Marist 33-17 on the weekend, co-coach Mark Milne concedes the favourtism tag is probably in the Wanderers camp. “They’re the form side. They always are at this time of the year,” he says. “They’re always well prepared earlier than most teams and they’ve got bugger all personnel changes from last year. It will be tough.”

But he fell short of saying Wanderers will have something to prove following last year’s final. “I’m not too sure, you’ll have to ask them that. The motivation for us is that we’ve got to turn it around from last week and that’s where our motivation comes from. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we just have to put a better performance out there.”Mark was disappointed with his side’s er-ror-ridden performance against a Marist side full of line breakers, with former Waimea flanker Dan Hytongue getting

bragging rights over his former side. “We just made too many mistakes and our de-fence was not up to the standard it should be. I think it’s more an attitude thing.”The only positive Mark took out of the match was from the scrum at set-piece time, and he says the team has realised it will need to continue working hard if they plan to emulate last year’s suc-cess. “We’ve got to work a bit harder and come up to the level that’s required.” This Friday’s game kicks off at 3pm at Ju-bilee Park.

Marist’s Dan Hytongue and Seta Sauira try to stop the imposing Tevita Cabuvati from crossing the try line.

With Murchison dropping out of the Car Company di-vision two competition, Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys have quickly become the team to beat.Last year’s beaten finalists have won their first four games of the season, all by big margains, but co-coach Wayne Bateman says it’s sad to see Murchison pull out after two seasons as champions. “I’d rather have them there. Mur-chison was the team to beat and for us we need to set a

benchmark. But now we’ve got no one to set that on,” he says. “Collingwood and Takaka and Wanderers are prob-ably the teams to beat at the moment.”Waimea have lost about seven players from last year’s squad, with some moving up to the division one side, and others moving out of town. But the idea of going one bet-ter than last year hasn’t crossed the coach’s mind just yet. “Let’s just cruise along steadily and build on the things

we’re doing wrong. Then we’ll hit our peak around semi finals/finals time.”Waimea will take on Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers this Thursday night in Brightwater, and Wayne believes it will be the toughest match of the season, even though Wan-derers have lost two matches already. “She’s gonna be a pretty tough match on Thursday night. This is the Battle of the Bridge and both sides step up for it.”

Richmond, FC Nelson and Central Pirates all have the bye, giving them automatic qualification through to the first round. Last year Nelson College, who currently lead the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition, reached the third round of the Chatham Cup. The Wakefield FC vs Nelson College game will follow Nelson Suburbs’ Mainland Premier League match against Halswell United.

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Stables Richmond Rabbits have extended their lead at the top of the TRL ladder by beating Wairau Taniwha 78-0 in Blenheim on Saturday. Second rower Sam Hedges scored five tries in the rout, which is a record for the club. In other results, Stoke Cobras beat Tahunanui Tigers 34-12 while the Victory Phoenix and Wanderers Wolves drew 26-all. There are no games this weekend.

BASKETBALL: The Fico Finance Nelson Giants have claimed their first scalp of 2014, beating the returning Canterbury Rams 77-76 in a thriller at Saxton Stadi-um.

ATHLETICS: Tapawera jumper Chris Brake has ended the season on another high, this time in the United States. Hav-ing claimed three medals at the New Zea-land Track and Field Championship ear-lier in the month, Chris set a new Tasman Centre M20 triple jump record with a dis-tance of 14.52m to land him a sixth place finish at the Arcadia Invitational, near Los Angeles, on Sunday. Nominations sought for Richmond Residential Density Advisory GroupEnsuring there is a range of accessible and affordable housing forms in Richmond is a significant issue for the community. Would you like to play a part in considering how this is achieved? The Council is setting up an advisory group to facilitate community and professional involvement in the Richmond Residential Density project. The advisory group will assist in the consideration of where and how higher density housing in Richmond should be managed by the Council. Nominations for membership of the advisory group are being invited from people with an interest in Richmond’s housing market. The 14 member group will be made up of nine external representatives from relevant professional bodies, the community and Iwi together with one ward Councillor and four Council officers. The key document informing the advisory group is the Richmond Urban Density Investigation Report of 2012.A person seeking membership can be self-nominated or nominated by another person or organisation, however members will be appointed as individuals, not as organisation representatives.Nominees should fill out the online application or print out the pdf version and send it to the Council.
