Survivor Scooter attracts new facesSimon Bloomberg

This year’s Survivor Scoot-er charity ride may be a lot shorter in terms of distance than the original edition from Bluff to Nel-son but organiser Jason Monopoli is promising that it will be a lot more challenging.Survivor Scooter 5 will start at Hanmer Springs on February 18 when 25 riders on their 50cc scoot-ers set out on a four-day 350 kilometre journey. We did it three and a half years ago for our favourite winter sport – now Nelson is preparing to embrace another world cup, this time for our top summer code. This Saturday, the Cricket World Cup will officially start in Christchurch and Nelson is getting right behind the action with the Nelson 111 Cricket Street Party taking over upper Trafalgar St.In 2011, the same space was the venue for hundreds of Nelso-nians as they watched the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup and many will be hoping to watch the Blackcaps get off to the best possible start to the Cricket World Cup in the same place. The street party will include food and drink stalls, activities for kids and a giant bigscreen for people to watch the game, and will run from 10am until 6pm.Just down the road the annual Market Day will mean most

cash for charity. “The challenges are going to be interesting this year. We have one called the Bear Grylls Challenge so that gives you an idea of what the riders are in for.”Jason says the ride is a fund-raiser for the Nelson Ark with all proceeds going to the chari-ty. It is supported by the Nelson Four Wheel Drive Club which provides logistic support for the riders. Many of the riders in this year’s Survivor Scooter are “repeat offenders” which Jason says is a testament to the popularity of the event.

Two of those repeat offenders are Nelson couple Christine and Andrew Clark who have also talked their friends, Rod Sharp and Janine Pomeroy, into joining them.“It will be the third time we’ve done it and we’re really looking forward to it,” Christine says. “You get to see some incredible countryside and have so much fun.“It’s like four-wheel-driving ex-cept you aren’t sitting in a cab. You get right into the coun-tryside - sometimes with your face in the mud.“You also get to go places you would never have access to and you are raising money for the Ark. The people who do it

are great company too - they are all adventurous and have a good sense of humour.”Although Rod and Janine will be Survivor Scooter rookies, Christine is confident they will be up to the challenge. “They both do adventure rac-ing and Rod was in the army so they’ll cope really well. They’ll probably handle it better than us.” The event has already raised $1040 for the Ark after major sponsor Total Oil donate a new Peugeot scooter which was sold on TradeMe along with a free entry into the ride. The scooter will be auctioned-off after the ride with the proceeds also going to the Ark.

On Monday, the action switches to Saxton Oval where the West Indies will play Ireland from 10am. It will be the first of three Cricket World Cup games to be played in Nelson and it is already sold out.Nelson deputy mayor Paul Mathe-son says the games will provide great exposure for the region. However, it seems that the Tasman district has failed to get enthused about the Cricket World Cup with

the council and Richmond Un-limited deciding not to put on any events. “It’s probably a missed op-portunity for Richmond,” says Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quit. “It’s a big event for the region but funding these events is the bottom line.”TDC’s community and recreation advisor, Mike Tasman-Jones, says they haven’t organised anything apart from helping to erect tempo-rary bike stands at Saxton Oval to encourage people to bike to games.

Tasman School has been made to comply with “heavy-hand-ed” conditions to gain a re-source consent so it can hold its popular fundraising Muddy Buddy Adventure Fun Run next month.Last year 1400 people slithered their way around the Mou-tere Inlet in the fun run which raised $13,000 for the school. Muddy Buddy will be held again on March 15 this year but only after the Tasman Dis-trict Council approved a re-source consent for the event that councillor Judene Edgar says includes conditions that “are way over the top”.“They have made the school change the course so the Mud-dy Buddies have to cross the road to get to the estuary in-stead of going through a con-crete culvert under the road. That one really threw me - how can a concrete culvert be a sen-sitive environment?”Judene says the school will now have to implement a traf-fic management plan to divert traffic so that Muddy Buddy contestants can safely cross Aporo Rd. She estimated that alone could cost the school around $1500.The resource consent also lim-its Muddy Buddy to 1400 peo-

ple to minimise its impact on the environment. The school will have to miti-gate the impact of the event by implementing a planting programme and changing the course each year. However, Judene, who has en-tered Muddy Buddy every year since it started in 2010, says all these conditions are unneces-sary anyway because the origi-nal report by environmental consultants Wriggle showed that the event had a negligible impact on the environment. The report states that Muddy Buddy’s impact on estuarine animals and plants appears minimal because “most of the course is located on perched, muddy mid-tidal flats” where

“animals were generally scarce” and plants didn’t grow. It also reported that “surface disturbance of the muddy in-tertidal flats was minor and returned relatively quickly to a point where visual impacts were not obvious.” The only minor concern was damage to a 100 square metre area of saltmarsh that showed “signs of recovery after six months”.“Evidence showed Muddy Buddy doesn’t have a sig-nificant impact,” Judene says. “Concerns were raised by DOC and iwi but it depends how you respond to those concerns.“What we have made the school go through has been a huge over-reaction. We have made life hard for them instead of working with them.”Tasman School principal, Pip Wells agrees they had to go through a detailed resource consent process with council but she is happy the event will go ahead. Pip says the school has always been concerned about envi-ronmental issues and will be working with DOC, replant-ing and monitoring the overall impact of the event.Muddy Buddy will be held on Sunday, March 15 with registrations from 9.30am to 10.30am.

Honey season bang on the moneySimon Bloomberg

Nelson beekeepers are enjoying one of the best seasons in 40 years with warm temperatures, timely rainfalls and pro-lific flowering resulting in bumper yields of high quality honey.“It’s a really excellent season with yields well above average,” Moutere Beekeep-ing’s Hector Urquhart says. “We are get-ting around 50 to 70 kilograms of hon-ey from each hive, which is very good.“I’ve been beekeeping here for 12 years and this year’s right up there with the very good season we had in 2009-2010. But I think the quality is better this year - we have had pollen counts done on the manuka honey and it’s very good quality.”Hector, who has hives in Golden Bay and around the Nelson-Tasman region, says the heat, timely rainfalls and good flowering by key plants have combined to produce the perfect season.“We have the nice hot days and it hasn’t been windy. The manuka and kanuka and kamahi have also been flower-ing really well and then we’ve had just enough rain to release the nectar,” he says. Managing director of Nelson Honey Philip Cropp, who is a third-genera-tion beekeeper and started commer-cial beekeeping in 1972, says “it’s one of the best season’s we have ever seen”. Although Philip says it is “too early” to put a figure on yields, it will “be well above average.”“The manuka has been flowing very well and it’s our premium-priced prod-uct compared to other honey. There’s lots of different grades of manuka

honey but we’d usually get around $20 a kilogram.”President of the Nelson branch of the National Beekeepers Association and Mountain Valley Honey co-owner, Murray Elwood agrees the “perfect weather” has resulted in “a very good season”. “We started harvesting just after Christ-mas and the quantity is good and the quality is good. It’s been a little difficult getting a pure line of manuka honey be-cause the kamahi has been flowering so well but we are very happy with it.”Murray says the bumper season is good news for beekeepers after many report-ed poor yields last summer. “Last season wasn’t very good for us. It was a cold summer and we had a poor nectar flow.

“But this season is pretty darn good. and I’ve been beekeeping for 25 years and this season would be in the top four or five.”Hector says beekeepers are also ben-efitting from strong domestic and ex-port markets. Demand and price have been high especially for manuka hon-ey which is the most expensive in the world.“The strong demand for manuka honey seems to be lifting the price of other honey. It’s a good time to be a beekeep-er,” he says.New Zealand’s 4279 registered bee-keepers, 27,106 apiaries and 452,018 beehives produce around 9000 to 12,000 tonnes of honey annually, with one third to half exported. Exports of honey are valued at around $81 million.

The newly-named Kohatu Park is gaining plenty of support from motorsport enthu-siasts and businesses as fund-raising and planning for the motorsport and adven-ture park near Tapawera south of Nelson changes up a gear.Plans for a motorsport venue on a 203 hec-tare property owned by Nelson business-man and motorsport enthusiast, Garry Adcock, have been in the pipeline for a number of years. But the project gained traction last year after a resource consent was granted for initial earthworks and in-frastructure at the site and a board of di-rectors was elected to steer the project.

And now the board has launched a new website to publicise the project and started a membership drive to show that it has enough support from the community. Board member Dave McLeod says they already have about 300 members and are aiming to get 1000 by March.Dave says the support is critical to show the Nelson and Tasman councils that the Kohatu Motorsport Park should be includ-ed their 2015-2025 Long Term Plans to be finalised in June this year. “Now is the time, if they want a park, to get behind it and make it happen. The more support we can show, the sooner the park

will be up and running,” Dave says. Associate membership costs $20, with new members eligible for $55 of discounts

through a voucher system backed by Nel-son businesses. “That funding isn’t going to build the park but it is important because it will show the level of support,” Dave says. He says the serious funding for the project would need to come from major sponsors.Dave says the board has also received the first concept plans for some of the facili-ties at the park and he expects work to start soon on some of the “non-seal” tracks for motocross, supercross, rallying and off-road racing. Kohatu Park will be having on open day on-site on February 22. For information, see kohatupark.co.nz

A bouquet of red roses might be the traditional Valentine’s Day gift, but Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is offering a greener option for nature lovers this year.A Nursery Open Day will be held this Saturday from 9am to midday at NMIT’s Richmond Campus in Lower Queen St. Morning tea will be available and participants will have the opportunity to pot up native plants for the many exciting re-vegetation projects happen-ing around the region - they will also receive a flax plant as a green Valentine’s Day gift. The open day is being held to promote NMIT’s National Cer-tificate in Horticulture (Level 3) which runs part-time over one year and has no fees. Tutor Don Cross says the course covers the basics of plant propagation, irrigation, agrichemical use, plant identification, pruning, botany, plant protection soils and media. Don says horticulture is the second largest employer in the Nelson-Tasman region and there are also a large number of people involved in conservation and restoration work who could benefit from gaining the qualifi-cation.“It’s a highly practical pro-gramme which has been designed for people either working in, or interested in, horticulture. After successfully

completing the National Cer-tificate in Horticulture (Level 3), graduates will have the skills to construct their own propaga-tion units that will enable them to grow plants for their own on-going interests,” he says.

Enrolments for the next intake of the free course are now open with classes starting on Monday February 23.For more information call NMIT on 0800 422 733 or visit the website nmit.ac.nz

The smell of hangi wafted through the air as visitors were treated to an array of international foods at the Whakatu Marae for the 2015 International Kai Festival on Friday. The Waitangi Day event drew large crowds which crammed in around both the marae and Founders Heritage Park.Visitors had the chance to taste a variety of Maori and New Zealand kai including hangi, boil-up pies, whitebait patties, fried bread and raw fish. A number of international stalls were also serving up traditional food such as oliebol, churros, curries and breads.

A long queue of people formed around the hangi pit as the baskets of food were lifted from the hot irons and dished up into paper bowls.Event organiser Carol Hippolite says she was overwhelmed with the reaction from visitors.“Most people who I talked to said it was pretty awesome and we didn’t need to change anything. They loved all the performances.”She says the event attracts a lot of tourists who like to learn about Maori culture. This year she had worked in with the Nelson Provincial Museum to develop display placards and pamphlets to hand out.She estimates the turnout was close to last year’s number of around 10,000 people.

January was the busiest month on record for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter with the crew at-tending 64 call outs.Last year was also a record year with 460 total missions throughout the region, a 28 per cent increase from the previous year at 357 emergen-cies. General manager Paula Muddle says the good summer weather along

with foreign tourists visiting earlier this year and Cantabrians return-ing in larger numbers to our region could have contributed towards the increase in January missions.Call outs included general medical emergencies such as motor vehi-cle and mountain biking accidents, search and rescue operations and fires. Most of the emergencies were in the three National Parks within the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller areas.

A joint initiative between Huggies, Plunket and the ASB Aquatic Centre is aimed at getting young children into the pool to learn to swim without the risk of a “Code Brown” alert.Plunket has been staging a campaign to keep the country’s littlest swimmers safe by urging parents to “stay close and actively supervise your children, keeping them within reach at all times when they are in and around water.” And to support Plunket’s message, nappy brand Huggies is leading a new safe water initiative to help keep pool water clean while also giving parents a new incentive to enrol their toddlers in swim lessons. Huggies is offering a free first-pair of their Lit-tle Swimmers Swimpants for every child under 18 months who is enrolled in baby and toddler swim lessons in the first term at pools through-out the country including the ASB Aquatic Centre Swim Magic swim school. “It’s a great initiative because it’s promoting the message that it’s fine to take your child to swim-ming lessons even if they aren’t toilet trained,” Swim Magic’s Lisa Stove says. “We have around 420 pre-schoolers coming in here for lessons each week and we don’t have any problems.”Although the ASB Aquatic Centre has a so-phisticated filtration system, Lisa says a Code Brown” alert would close the learner’s pool for four hours. It would take eight hours for the two filtration cycles to clear the main pool. Huggies has handed out 2000 first-pairs of swimpants to swim schools throughout the country as part of the promotion.

Daniel McGuiness and his son Oliver joined in the ASB Aquatic Centre’s Swim Magic pre-school swim lessons last week. Oliver is wearing the free Little Swimmers Swimpants sponsored by Hug-gies. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

For more than 40 years Pat Bailey has had just one bowls trophy on his mind, the one that was dedicat-ed to his mother – and on Sunday, close to tears, he finally won it.The Bailey Trophy was donated to the Stoke Bowling Club by his late father, Denny Bailey, 41 years ago, in memory of Pat’s mother, Lila.Pat has played for the trophy almost every year since, only missing when it was either cancelled due to poor weather, or a lack of teams forced it to be cancelled. But on Sunday, he finally won it.“I have been trying to win the tro-phy since 1974 and I have been in some really good teams, includ-ing one with my late sister, Kath-leen Tomlinson, who won a New Zealand Championship, but I was a bridesmaid many times, so I am thrilled to bits that we won,” says Pat.Pat has been playing bowls for 52 years and during that time he has won many championships, but he

ranks Sunday’s win the most special of his career.Pat and his team mates, Colin Dela-ney and Monica Kennedy, won the prized trophy over 15 other mixed teams at the Stoke Bowling Club.At nearly 82, he says that he can’t play like he used to as his body won’t do what his mind is telling it to do, so needs to play with a me-chanical arm. He credited his team mates with the win.“Colin skipped, Monica played two and I led, both of my team mates played excellent,” says Pat.The first bowls Pat ever played was in a father and son tournament at Mapua Bowling Club, which they won, and from that time on he was hooked on bowls. He won over 30 club championships there before moving to the Richmond Bowling Club 14 years ago.“My father was a real male chauvi-ist but his second wife made him change his mind when it came to women playing bowls, so he do-nated the trophy for a mixed team, in memory of my mother,” says Pat.

The Brightwater Playcentre has had a good start to the year receiving a donation of $1000 from The Warehouse’s new store in Richmond as part of a competition held to celebrate the store’s opening last year.About 30 non-profit community groups en-tered the competition which was posted out in the store’s first adverting pamphlet. Bright-water Playcentre’s Charla Stratford entered the competition and last Thursday she and 11 of the centre’s parents and their children headed down to The Warehouse to collect the $1000.“I thought I’d enter but didn’t expect to win - I didn’t even tell anyone I’d entered,” Charla says. “You had to explain why your community group deserved to win $1000 and I wrote that we are like a second family home for the com-munity.”Charla says the money will be used to buy arts and crafts materials, “definitely from The Ware-house”, and restore the centre’s vegetable gar-den. It would also be used to fund a water play area they were planning to build.Store manager Geoff Bostock says they enjoy supporting community groups which “work re-ally hard to raise funds to keep operating”. The Warehouse has a number of initiatives aimed at helping the community, including its customer choice programme that distributes funds from plastic bag sales back to the community.Team leader Caroline Heissner says the store was also looking for other ways to support their community including providing space for sau-sage sizzles. Any groups interested in applying to be part of the customer choice programme or that have a fundraising proposal can email Caroline at [email protected]

I don’t know about you, but I love to get mail and Christmas cards etc. This past Christmas our daughter, Ka-ren, sent us a card and wrote in it. I share its contents and have added a few more:God knew we needed warmth, so He gave us the sun;God knew we needed rest, so He gave us the night;God knew we needed sustenance, so He gave us food;God wanted us to enjoy food, so He gave us taste buds;God knew we needed to see wonders, so

He gave us eyesight;God knew we needed truth, so He gave us His Word;God knew we needed a redeemer, so He gave us Jesus;God knew we would get lost, so He gave us The Way;God knew we needed something to value, so He gave us the Pearl of Great Price;God knew we needed unconditional love, so He gave us His Son;God knew we needed someone to pray for us, so He sent us the Great High Priest;God knew that sometimes we would be in pain, so He sent the Comforter;God knew we needed direction, so He

gave us the Bright Morning Star;He knew we needed beauty, so He gave us the Sweet Rose of Sharon; He knew our bodies would fail us, so He sent us the Great Physician; He knew we were concerned with rep-utations, so He sent us the King of the Jews;He knew we were anxious, so He gave us the Prince of Peace; He knew we needed defending, so He gave us the Lion of Judah; He knew we were easily scared, so He gave us the Lamb of God;He knew we were confused, so He sent us the Wonderful Counsellor; He knew we needed power so He sent the Holy Spirit; But most of all He knew we needed Him, so He gave us Emmanuel.“My God will meet all your needs ac-cording to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Monster Slide:After reading the comments on your “Your Voice” page, I decid-

ed to add my two cents worth. I thought

the monster slide was a bit of a sham-bles. The organising was pretty hope-less and simple things like the gradient wasn’t investigated properly. However, my kids loved it. My mate’s kids loved it and at the end of the day that’s all that mattered to me. Do they have things to work on? Yes. But I for one hope they’ll be back again next year and I’d happily pay to go again. Dylan (via email).

Cleaning up Bridge Street and gaining the confidence and trust of the Nelson public stand out as highlights for Nel-son Bays Police Area Commander In-spector Steve Greally who is heading to Wellington next month to take up a job as national manager of road policing. When Steve arrived in Nelson three years ago, he promised to target the drunken disorder that reigned on Nel-son’s Bridge St on Saturday nights and he delivered on that promise. And while he takes a lot of satisfaction out of that “result” he says one of the big-gest accolades for his 137 staff at Nel-son Bays police is that “our public trust and confidence is among the highest in New Zealand”. “Bridge Street has been a major focus and I think we have really changed the culture there on Saturday night and Sunday morning There are far fewer se-rious assaults, whether they be physical or sexual, which is great.“But the police have served Nelson Bays very well in all areas and that’s reflected in the public trust in us. I am immensely proud of my staff. “I know they work extremely hard and I’ve seen them put in a lot of sleepless nights. They have just got on and done the job they believe in so they can make it a placer safe for everyone.”Steve also identifies the downward trend in crime statistics, “a couple” of successful homicide investigations and “good results” with the Red Devils” as

other highlights. “The downward trend in the crime stats is pleasing and we have had really good traction over the last three years. But that will hit a lower limit and so we need to keep looking at ways to con-tinually keep improving the way we do things and make gains - that will be one of the biggest challenges for the new area commander.” Steve says one of the keys to the po-lice’s success over the last three years has been engaging the community and that’s something he learned quickly as an area commander. “It’s been a steep learning curve and I have learned so much about people. It’s not just about managing staff, it’s also about interacting with the people out-side the police and in the community

groups - they are the ones who under-stand the issues.”Steve says it was a “really tough deci-sion” to leave Nelson after three years but the new new job represents a sig-nificant opportunity. “It’s going to be a huge change. As an area commander road policing is part of what I do anyway but to have a sole focus on road policing is a challenge I’m looking forward to.“But it was still a really tough decision. My wife, Erin, and I love Nelson - the weather is fantastic, the people are great.“What’s not to love about Nelson? It’s going to be very hard to leave.” Steve starts his new role on March 16 and says a new area commander for Nelson has yet to be appointed.

Opening SOOn

For those with glasses or contact lenses, a chance to get rid of them would probably be a welcome prospect and thanks to Dr Reece Hall, it’s now a possibility. Dr Hall has been travelling to Nelson for three years now, providing check-ups on his post-surgery patients and offering assessments for those interested in the operation. Recently, he has opened his own day surgery and is now offering the same services from a new, modern facility, at-tached to Bowen Hos-pital in Wellington. From the Bowen Eye Clinic, Dr Hall will still be making his trips to Nelson, offer-ing people who wear glasses the chance to see perfectly without them. Locals can head along for a free assessment where Dr Hall will run several tests to see if the surgery will help their eyes. Whether his patients are young people in their 20s wanting to throw away their glasses or peo-ple in their 50s tired of their glasses, the surgery can help those who are either short sighted or

long sighted, although it does work best for a particular group which is what the tests deter-mine. For people that want the surgery, all the assessments and post operation check-ups are done here in Nelson with just one flight needed to Wellington for the surgery itself. The surgery is virtually pain free and total-

ly blade free as the Bowen Eye Clinic is equipped with the latest FDA approved lasers. During the surgery patients are given local anaesthet-ic meaning they are awake but don’t feel any pain in their eyes. Dr Hall has received feedback from many satisfied patients over the three years he’s been coming to Nel-son, who have gained

more freedom now that their eyesight is perfect without the need for glasses or contact lenses. To contact the clinic phone 0800 69 20 20 or visit the website at www.boweneye.co.nz for more information.

Nelson Forests Ltdare proud to support the Brightwater Wine

and Food Festival

It’s a celebration of everything local and this Sunday is your chance to enjoy the splendours of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival. Their success last year can be attributed to a fan-tastic turn out of stallholders and patrons, and the hard work of organisers, the Rotary Club of Richmond. The event is also hugely important to the community because of the funds it provides for local charitable organisations. Last year the festival managed to raise over $28,000 for these groups and this year will be no different. Pro-ceeds will be going towards the Nelson Marl-borough Rescue Helicopter, Wanderers Sports Club, Brightwater Rural Fire Force, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, St John, Brightwater School, Hype, Great Taste Cycle Trail Trust and the Nelson Volunteer Coast Guard.

With a ‘back to basics’ motto that successfully showcases the important elements of the Bright-water Wine and Food Festival, you do not want to miss out on enjoying a day of delicious food, fantastic local wine and beer and a display of boats from the NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show, set up to welcome the public into the event. Located amongst the vines of the beau-tiful Middle-Earth Winery, the atmosphere of the festival just can’t be beaten and is the per-fect venue for enjoying some of the area’s most talented musicians. If you have the moves, then don’t be afraid to show them off as you listen to acts such as Paul Madsen, Kramit, Urban, An-toni Neale, along with the Neale brothers and a set from the winner of this year’s More FM com-petition, Sound Stage.

Brightwater Wine and Food Festival-goers en-joy the local music and refreshments on offer at this popular event.

62 Gladstone Road, Richmond, Nelson

After a successful 2014 festival, organisers are keen to keep on improving the experience for the public, and this year will see an even bet-ter children’s entertainment area. Organised by Brightwater School and featuring plenty of fun activities from Blast Entertainment, parents can enjoy the fact their children will have a great time too. Make sure you are pre-pared to enjoy a full day of fun in the sun. Once again sunscreen and water will be pro-vided free of charge and people are encour-aged to bring along their own seating. Whether it’s a picnic blanket, deck chair, sun lounger, or a good old country hay bale, make yourself comfortable, then sit back and relax. Don’t forget your hat and if you want a bit more protection from the heat, a sun umbrella wouldn’t go a miss either. The Great Taste Cycle Trail is also a key feature of this year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Fes-tival, with those attending encouraged to use pedal powered transport if they can. Mid-dle-Earth is not only close to Richmond, but the cycle trail offers the perfect start to what will be a great day. The pleasant scen-ery and the fact you don’t have to find a park when you get there are all part of the joys of cycling, plus, there will be a secure bike storage area at the festival, available overnight should you wish to take alterna-tive transport home. Even if you don’t want to bike, you can still avoid the hassle of parking your car by making the most of the bus service to and from the festival. Buses will be stop-ping at all pickup points between Nelson, Stoke, Tahuna and Richmond; depart-ing for Brightwater at 10:30am via Ha-ven Road, Rocks Road, Main Road Stoke, Saxtons Field and Hope, while the second pickup will be at 10:50am from Songer St corner in Stoke and travelling via Main Road Stoke, Salisbury Rd, Gladstone Rd and Main Road Hope. At the end of the festival, buses will be making the journey

home at 4:30pm, 5pm and 5:30pm. With a great cause at the heart of this event, and a fantastic selection of food, wine and beer, you will kick yourself if you miss the Brightwa-

ter Wine and Food Festival this Sunday. To win free tickets to the event, simply email your details to [email protected], or you can buy them from any of the listed businesses prior to the event, or purchase them at the gate on Sunday for $20 per person. Tickets are available from Colourplus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nel-

son and Richmond, Wakefield Supermarket, Brightwater Motors, Reliance Beta Electrical, Specsavers, Village Cycles, Paper Plus Nelson, Brightwater Sprig & Fern and Hangar 58 for just $15. The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival will begin at 11am and runs until 5pm. For full de-tails visit the website at www.bwff.co.nz.

It’s Nelsons biggest car/motor show and it’s back for 2015, offering families three days out to entertain the youngest to the oldest car enthusiasts. The Nelson Motor Show will see 400 cars from around the country converge on Tahuna Holiday Park, alongside a number of other displays and activities. There is so much planned for the three days that make up the Nelson Motor Show, thanks to the hard work of Steve Steele and his team of organisers, so get ready to make the most of getting up close and personal with

motor vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and a great range of entertainment. This motor show is not only an interactive and thrilling event for everyone; it has a pretty unique way of doing things. For example, a truck load of fantastic prizes are up for grabs for anyone. From car trailers, a bed made out of a car, car batteries, model cars, oil packs and vouchers, to the mother-load of all prizes, three convertible cars that will be given away

over the three days. The show will unoffi-cially start on Thursday at Smugglers Pub and Cafe with a registration evening. Come along be-tween 6pm and 8pm to register for the Bay Hop, Black Friday Cruz, mo-tor show or the Saturday night event, or come for a catch up if you’ve previously signed up, and those registered will automatically go into the draw to win a sound system sponsored by Smugglers. Friday activities kick off at 9:30am at the Stables Restaurant and Bar for the Bay Hop. Steve will be leading a cruise out to Kaiteriteri and then home via Mapua, with registration and attendance to the activity earning one entry into the draw for the vehi-cle giveaway that night. At 6:30pm, the Black Friday Cruz will start. Everyone is welcome to take part whether you’re

registered in the motor show or not, and those who com-plete the cruz and fill out a form will also go in the draw to win Friday's convertible. The cruz will follow a map that is available off the website at www.nelsonmotorshow.com, starting at Speights Ale House in Tahuna then travelling via Richmond, Stoke, Nelson and out to Atawhai, before returning to the ale house. At 9pm, the lucky winner of the Ford Capri Convertible will be announced by Steve’s good friend and major sponsor, Gareth Caldwell, owner of Speights Ale House.Saturday marks the start of the public show, so come along and view the pride and joy of owners from Gore to Auck-land. Kids will love the chance to play pilot as they explore the plane and helicopter display, while the army, navy and

air force offer an educational side for young people think-ing about a career in one of the defence forces. Last year, 16 recruit applications were successful through the Nel-son Motor Show. There will be some impressive trucks, an engine destruction and an exhibition by the fire brigade using the Jaws of Life. The show will also feature a car sale yard and a trunk and treasure swap meet. Come along and have a look at what’s on offer. If something takes your fancy, a bit of haggling might get it for a tidy price. Those registered in the motor show will also be looking forward to winning one of the 40 available trophies. Top award being Show Champion, followed by People’s Choice, however, they have the whole spectrum cov-ered with trophies for 'work in progress', 'shit that’s different', 'unique modifications' and so much more. Things don’t end there though. Saturday night is jam packed with a selection of entertain-ment including live music from Kick, performances by Sun City Burlesque, Dynamite Pole Studio and special guest this year, Ur-zila Carlson. Taking the place of Ewen Gilmour after his death last year, Urzila will be doing a trib-ute show in memory of Ewen, featuring the auctioning off of an air brush portrait of him. Those who buy tickets will also go into the draw for a BMW M3 Convertible, a Red Bull fridge and products, a model of an AC Cobra or Interislander travel vouchers. Ewen’s limo, which he used to attend the Variety Bash, will also be there on the day. Steve has brought it down from up north so people can take a look, remember one of New Zealand’s comedy icons and even go for a ride.

Sunday is another chance for the public see the beauty of American Muscle all the way through to modern day ve-hicle technology, but as the final day, it will also conclude the Nelson Motor Show with the judging of the vehicles and prize giving, and the raffle draw of the Ford Mustang Convertible. A variety of refreshments will be available for sale too, with hot and cold drinks, food and the Speights Ale House stand. The Nelson Motor Show is held over the days of Friday 13, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February. The show

is open to everyone, with entrance just $5 on the day. Tickets to Urzila Carl-son’s show are $25 and can be booked at www.nelsonmotorshow.com while raffle tickets are also just $5. The Nelson Motor Show wouldn’t be

possible without the generosity of so many sponsors, and the support of so many local businesses is much appre-ciated by Steve and the organising team. Entrance to the show is off Parkers Rd, with traffic management by As-phalt and General and free parking to all public cars in-side the Tahuna Holiday Park. Nelson Motor Show asks all to please support their sponsors as they make the show a reality. For more details visit the motor show website.

The birth of a new baby is always awe-inspiring. Recently our family welcomed another wee girl into the world. Snuggles with the new born were delightful.

Who enjoys reading the Letters to the Editor? There is often vigorous debate about various religions including Christianity. Some say believing in Jesus Christ takes blind faith.

Recently, Ray Mackie, wrote: Christianity is a reasonable faith, based on historical evidence, eyewitness accounts, pathology, circumstantial evidence, documents by hostile witnesses, lives dramatically changed for the better. (Nelson Mail, 2/2/15)

Ray’s gets it. Most Christians are not empty-headed, clueless people. Most have examined the evidence and made rational deductions from what they’ve discovered. Most churches and church leaders encourage people to research and evaluate their faith. Hopefully Christians are thinking people.

The Christian faith is not a bunch of dry, dull facts though. It is a life-affirming, life-enhancing relationship with the living Jesus. It is about experiencing love and power in that relationship.

And ….. some prefer to avoid this next bit … it involves being changed in order to fulfil the potential God has given us. Some years back, Jesus told a religious-type guy, “You must be born again.” Christians have made this ‘born-again’ thing into a formula. That’s a very great pity. Being ‘born again’ is actually about dying to our old, self-centred way

of life and letting Jesus create new life in us. Jesus does that real well.

Every new baby is wonderful. New Christians are wonderful too, if sometimes a bit scary in their enthusiasm. New life is a great experience. New life is possible every day, simply by asking Jesus to be near us and to do what he wants within us.

Keen to experience new life? Visit a church, read the Bible, join a Christian group, or approach Jesus directly.

— Susan Gill, Vicar

Finding New Life

Parishioner Stories: Mentoring in the PacificFunafuti is one of 8 Island in Tuvalu, (previously called the Ellice Islands) about 1,000 km north of Fiji and ten degrees south of the equator. The nearest island to Funafuti is 100 km to the north.

I have been to Tuvalu four times in the last two years to help people to become more self-sufficient. The mentoring is free to the businesses involved. One of my clients is a fisherman who goes out every day in his dinghy and outboard motor and sells his catch on the front lawn of his house on his return.

My observations tell me that the diet of Tuvaluans is not terribly healthy because it being a coral island, they can’t grow vegetables there unless they import soil from Fiji.

My suggestion was to start a small hydroponic growing enterprise. Firstly, to increase his income and secondly, to make available greens, which the locals are lacking.

Sometimes it takes a bit of persuading to think outside the square but we are always hopeful.

—Jacob Klootwyk, church member

Spiritual formation groupsStarting up for the year we have a variety of groups for people interested in exploring various aspects of Christian spirituality and life. Some are weekly and some fortnightly. The groups cover a variety of topics and have their own formats to suit the members of the group. It can help to mull over ideas and questions together rather than by ourselves and usually it involves quite a few laughs along the way.

One of New Zealand distance running’s most durable performers, Phil Costley, is chasing an-other milestone in this Saturday’s Buller Mara-thon.The Nelson College teacher, who has a stagger-ing 32 national titles to his name, already holds the Buller open half and full marathon and veteran half marathon records in the popular run through the Buller Gorge to Westport. On Saturday, he will be aiming to complete the set by attempting to break David Askin’s veteran’s marathon record of 2 hours 29 minutes 16 sec-onds set in 1997.“It’s in the back of my mind but I’m pretty re-laxed about the whole thing,” Phil says. “It also depends on the day - when you are running 42 kilometres there are so many variables that any-thing can happen.“I haven’t done any races for a while so it’s hard to know what sort of shape I’m in as well. I’ll just take in one kilometre at a time and see how we are going.’Phil’s last race was the Sun Run Marathon in Blenheim in November which he won in 2hr 32min 41sec. Although he hasn’t raced since then he says the experience he has gained run-ning “close to 20 marathons” and countless half marathons “counts for a lot at the tough end of the race”. Phil is one of 149 runners in the full marathon. Hope runner Paula Canning will be defending her half marathon title she won last year in 1hr 22min 36. There will be 868 runners in the half marathon run, 239 in the half marathon walk and 83 relay teams, taking the number of entries to 1825.

The Burger King 3X3 Basketball Tour came to Nelson on Friday with 22 teams competing in the event. Programme head coach Anthony Corban says there was some real talent on show. “I was really im-pressed with the talent, particularly with the under-16 girls level, it was a really strong competition.” Mumma Mia ITA came first in the open mens, #sparks4lyf in open womens, Durantulas U14 mens, Sun City Blazers U16 mens, The Ed Book Foundation U16 Girls and Yung U18 mens. Congratulations Greenacres!Loyal supporters of Greenacres Golf Club

Greenkeepers David Hill and Neville Miller keep the Greenacres course a beautiful golfing destination.

This could be the year to try your hand at golf, and where better to ignite a passion for the sport than at Greenacres Golf Club. Just a few minutes from Richmond and across the estuary from Rabbit Island, the serene semi-links 18-hole golf course is one of the region’s best, boasting breathtaking views for its players and staff, while offering a challenging enough round for both competitive and social golfers. The Best Island course is relatively easy to play and walk around and features spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and estuary, pro-viding the perfect backdrop to your golfing ex-perience.Greenacres welcomes newcomers to try out the sport, along with former players looking to get back into the game. You can play only 9 holes if you wish and this is a great way to get outdoors and moving, so why not bring a friend along and give it a go? You’ll be sure to enjoy the great scenery while mastering the skill behind such a popular sport. If you don’t have your own gear, the team at Sharpies Pro Shop (situated in the Greenacres Clubhouse) can kit you out with everything you need. If you then decide to purchase your own golfing equipment, or upgrade your existing gear, Sharpies have a

great range of clubs, bags, balls, tees, clothing and accessories and a great team to help you find the best options to suit your requirements.Greenacres Golf Club is proud to offer members a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. People can enjoy companionship, whether it’s out on the green with a club in hand, sitting in the Club Lounge enjoying lunch or browsing the products of Sharpie’s; the clubs pro-shop. There is a real sense of community and pride amongst Greenacres’ members and often members volunteer their own time to help out at the club, helping to keep it looking and operating at its best. The landscape of Greenacres Golf Club suits the relaxed sport to a tee, and players can visit the course any hour they choose as it is open until dark. Whether you wish to play on your own or competitively, there are plenty of options at this friendly club. The course caters to all ages from juniors just starting out through to those enjoying their retirement. The handicap system means everyone can compete evenly, but if you wish to improve your skills you can spend extra time on the club’s putting green and driving range. If you are keen to improve your skills, or are a beginner looking for regular lessons, the club

Lance Sergeant Allan Roy Cozens (Serial No. 6/759) was born on 15 April 1892 in Dovedale. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs W. Parkinson (mother), Awa, Nel-son. Before enlisting for service during World War One, Cozens worked for himself as a farmer. Cozens en-listed from Murchison and joined the Can-terbury Infantry Bat-talion. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton for Welling-ton. From Wellington, Cozens joined the Main Body and em-barked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. He served for four years and two hun-dred and ninety-one days in Egypt, the

Balkans and Western Europe. Cozens sur-vived the war and was

discharged on 4 June 1919. He died on 3 March 1973 in Nelson.

Draft Tasman District Council Wastewater Bylaw 2015The previous bylaw has expired and the Council has to replace it.A focus of the bylaw is the discharge of trade waste into the wastewater system. Trade waste is any liquid that is not domestic in nature and will typically come from commercial or industrial activities. Trade waste controls are necessary to avoid operational and treatment problems within the wastewater system, public health and safety, and effects on the environment. The bylaw softens a 2005 definition of trade waste in a previous bylaw. Businesses or community facilities that only have conveniences such as toilets, kitchenettes, and/or staff rooms are not now considered trade waste. Many trade waste activities are now ‘permitted activities’ and simply need to register their activity with Council. Trade waste activities that are likely to have an adverse affect will need a trade waste permit. The bylaw also addresses issues such as inappropriate inflow or infiltration, overloading, blockages and working close to the wastewater system.A statement of proposal is available for viewing on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz and at all Council offices, Service Centres, and Libraries during normal opening hours. An open forum to explain the intention of the proposed bylaw and answer any questions or concerns will be held on Thursday 12 February 2015 at 5.00 pm in the Council Chamber, Richmond. This draft bylaw is available for you to have your say – consultation closes at 4.30 pm, 20 February 2015.If you have any questions regarding the bylaw or the consultation process, please contact Daryl Page on, Ph. 03 5437264 or Email: [email protected]
