Fight night a knockout successWhen the power went out for ten minutes at Saxton Stadium on Saturday night, Fight 4 Vic-tory organiser Paul Hampton said he wasn’t nervous, “I was numb”.After months of planning and preparing it was the one thing he and the other organisers hadn’t fretted over. The live grenade that was detonated by an army bomb disposal team after being found at a greenwaste recycling centre in Richmond on Sunday did not have a pin and could have ex-ploded at any time.Nelson police called in the bomb disposal squad from Christchurch after a rusty hand grenade was found by a staff member at Green Waste to Zero on Cargill Place at about 1pm. Police cordoned the area off until the bomb squad arrived and deto-nated the grenade at 9.20pm.An army spokesperson confirmed that the safety pin had rusted out and the grenade could have exploded at anytime. The only thing holding the striker lever in place and preventing the gre-nade exploding was rust and dirt.“It was a dangerous situa-tion and potentially it could have gone off,” the spokesperson says.“It could have caused injury to anyone within 15 to 20m.” The recycling centre’s owner Patrica Murrow says the grenade was found on land that had been used as a dump site before they established their business. “There’s always rubbish coming to the surface here so I assume that’s what happened with the grenade,” Patricia says. “When I went and had a look at it, it was obvious it was real and didn’t have a pin so I called the police - they were here in no time.”Richmond residents said the blast could be

heard throughout the town. “So that’s what that noise I heard was, a frigging bomb going off. Yikes,” wrote Beverley Midema on the Waimea Weekly Facebook page.Police say that all military ordnance should be treated as live and very dangerous. Anyone who locates any old bombs or muni-tions should not touch them and should call 111 immediately.

The crowds keep coming to the annual Mapua Easter Fair with around 20,000 people enjoying the warm weather and a wide variety of stalls and entertain-ment at the Mapua Domain on Sunday. Now considered one of the larg-est school fairs in New Zealand, the event is operated by the Ma-pua Easter Fair Charitable Trust which raises funds for Mapua School and Mapua Playcen-tre. Organisers, Jackie Hall and Anna Treder, have been working on the event since January and were very happy with the large turn-out. “The weather has been lovely and stall holders are doing a

great trade today, everything has flowed really well,” says Anna. “It’s always been really popular and I think a lot of that is to do with the fact that it’s on Easter Sunday when there’s not too much else to do.Anna says the fair raised be-tween $35,000 and $40,000.While the kids enjoyed the rides, adults enjoyed the shopping with over 300 stalls selling arts, hand-made crafts, furniture, clothing and food.Stallholder Lorraine Luck-man, from Serious Straws, says

sales had been strong with a steady stream of people coming through. “There are a lot more people than in previous years and sales have been good, every-one wants to buy a hat when it is sunny,” says Lorraine. The stage was full of talent, with performances by Mapua School children and entertainers from around the district. There was a variety of food on offer with 40 food stalls. The usual fair attractions, the laughing clowns, swinging chairs, giant slides and Ferris wheel, were all popular. The chil-dren’s corner featured face paint-ing, treasure hunts and space for creativity.

Amateur astronomer Ralph Bradley’s plans to establish a dark sky area and observato-ries at Wai-iti are another step closer after the proposal received an enthusiastic re-sponse from Tasman district councillors.Ralph lives near the Wai-iti Recreation Re-serve and approached council about set-ting up an observatory on his land. A key part of the proposal involves designating the council-owned reserve and adjacent Tunnicliff Forest as an International Dark Sky areas so that the observatory is not compromised by “light pollution”.Ralph says he purchased the property in Wai-iti because the quality of the dark sky was suitable for setting up the observato-

ries which he plans to open to the public. He says he has already had preliminary discussions with the International Dark Sky Association, which is responsible for designating of dark sky areas. “It would be an awesome asset for the whole community, being so close to town,” Ralph says. “I would like to have groups of visitors and school children come out and have a look through the telescopes at things they have never seen before, like the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the craters on the moon.” Councillor Michael Higgins says he sup-ports the plans which he considers could be a big attraction for Wai-iti. Michael says

the proposal is “do-able” because there is no lighting in the reserve or forest and no long-term plans to install lighting.“It’s an interesting idea. I know, from living away from any lights, that the night sky is a stunner, so I’m delighted to support the proposal.”However, Michael says forestry contrac-tors working at night could be an issue with the Dark Sky designation. A Dark Sky area is defined as a park or land possessing

an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights that is specifically protected for its scientific and educational values as well as public enjoyment.“I know, when they are harvesting, they have contractors working through the night. The place gets lit up like a Christmas tree so that could be a conflict.”Council reserves and facilities manager, Beryl Wilkes, says the proposed dark sky area and observatories could be valuable to the reserve and forest and wider commu-nity. The council voted to support the pro-posal and for staff to commence negotia-tions with Ralph regarding the provisions of the designation.

CAR CRASH: A car smashed into a street light on Wakefield Quay last Tuesday after the driv-er tried to swat a spider off her arm. The car, a white 1997 Misubishi Lancer Saloon, was head-ing towards Tahunanui from Nelson when it collided with the lamppost outside Latitude 41 apartments.

ARSON ATTEMPT: Petrol was deliberately tipped throughout a Nelson restaurant and then set on fire in an attempt to burn the building down, according to Waimea Weekly sources. Fire crews from Nelson attended the attempt-ed arson at Hanger 58 last Monday at around 2.30am. The fire was believed to have started in the bathroom and the police said at the time that it was suspicious.

RICHMOND GIRL GIVEN ALCOHOL: A Wakefield man was charged after supplying al-cohol to a 14 year old girl in Richmond. The girl was found with a quantity of alcohol in Wash-bourn Gardens on the night of the Last of the Harvest Fare event on March 21 and told police she had given money to an 18 year old man who had then purchased the alcohol for her.

A group of super grandmothers is mentoring the next generation of mums around Nelson, teaching them basic homemaking skills to help look after their families. The Super Gran programme, which is funded by the Minis-try of Social Development, is a free service open to anyone who wants to learn the basics of home management and life skills. It has been run by the Te Korowai Trust in Nelson and co-ordinator Betty Soane says it has produced some very positive results."When these women learn new skills it gives them self-esteem and that passes down through the family," Betty says. "We've had 39 referrals to the programme in the last seven months and, with their partners and children, that equates to 116 people who are benefiting."Betty says the trust has a team of seven Super Grans who go into the homes and provide one-on-one mentoring for their clients. Super Grans Moya Anderson, Christine Grieder and Kiri Self, who is also a staff member, say they help with a wide range of skills including practical cook-ing, budgeting, menu-planning, shopping on a budget, managing

the home and establishing house-hold routines. "We show these mums all the stuff we take for granted," Moya, a retired Plunket Nurse says. "It's no fault of their own that they don't have these skills - it's just a reflection on so-ciety."Super Grans work with a client for three to 12 months and Betty, Christine and Moya all say it can be extremely rewarding for both parties. The mums learn impor-tant skills and improve their self-esteem, while Super Grans gain

satisfaction from helping people in their community."I enjoy being part of other peo-ple's lives and helping them out," Christine says. "The family I have now is amazing - I'll teach her something and then say what do you want to learn next and she's really happy."Although there is a big differ-ence in age and sometimes in values between Super Grans and their clients, Moya says the young mothers always appreciate the help. "I had one client who told

me 'we thought you were a bit old-fashioned, but now we love what you tell us'. Those sorts of comments really make it worth-while being a Super Gran."Betty says the best thing about being a Super Gran is meeting a former client two or three years later and seeing the difference it has made to their lives. "It's really rewarding when you come across some of the mums you have mentored and see them doing well. I see a lot of them in the supermarket, you look at

what's in their trolley and it's very different from what they would have had in there before."And their kids will come run-ning up to you and say hello. You are a big part of their family for a while and they don't forget." However, Betty stresses that Su-per Grans do not provide a ba-bysitting service and that clients have to be prepared to help them-selves.She says the majority of their Su-per Gran clients are referred to the programme through social agencies like Work and Income New Zealand, although self-re-ferrals are considered. The scheme is available "across all cultures" in Nelson and Rich-mond. Betty says the trust's staff also work with a new client for the first few weeks to assess their requirements, before matching them up with a suitable Super Gran. All volunteers are "vetted" by police before they can become a Super Gran. The trust also runs workshops un-der the Super Gran scheme and is planning one on home safety and first aid for next month. Betty says anyone interested in getting help from a Super Gran, or joining the Super Gran team, can phone her on 0274144960.

A car is photographed parked at the end of Hope St, where it meets Hardy St, last week. The image went viral after it was published on www.nelsonlive.co.nz Photo: Pauline Hadfield.

A photo posted on nelsonlive.co.nz of an incredible car parking blunder has gone viral, with close to 100,000 views. The photo was taken by Pauline Hadfield from the Davis Ogilvie building and first posted on their Facebook page.It showed a car parked at the end of Hope St, where it meets Hardy St.Kylie Carter-Rangi, of the neigh-bouring Kudos Food, says the car was parked there for about 45 min-utes on Wednesday morning.

“The neighbours in the street all took photos. I saw the woman get back in her car, a local woman in about her 70s.”Comments on nelsonlive.co.nz ranged from disbelief to concern.Garry Nevin wrote: “I am sure that is the car parked strangely on Bridge St the other day. Must be a hobby of hers.”Some questioned how the driver has a licence and whether she should be on the road while others praised her for parking within the lines.

A Richmond business owner has been overwhelmed by the response from the local community to an advertisement asking people to donate knitted poppies for this year’s Anzac Day service. When Val Anisy, owner of Anisy’s Tas-man Funeral Homes, put a sign outside her business asking for people to donate poppies for the Richmond service, she expected to receive a few but has been inundated with over 1500 poppies do-nated so far. “From that one sign, peo-ple have handmade and delivered the poppies to us, they walk past our build-ing, see the display and take patterns and then return with poppies. Some have even been left on the doorstep, Maria Fearn has done 140 and teach-ers from Richmond School have made some and a friend from Canada made felt poppies when she visited. We even have people who can’t knit or crochet who have volunteered their time to sew or pin the poppies onto the old Army blankets,” says Val.Val has made two blankets using the bright red poppies and old army blan-kets, one will be donated to the Rich-mond Memorial Hall for a permanent display and the other will be on display at the Anzac Day service. Individual poppies will be available to purchase from the display at the service for a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the New Zealand RSA.

One of the poppies features a button from an original World War One Turk-ish soldier’s uniform from Gallipoli. It was donated by Wayne Peters who was visiting his late wife’s family in Rich-mond and saw the sign and thought the button would be of interest.Val, who is an ex-officer in the New Zealand Cadet Forces, has a strong in-terest in World War One and has also created an Anzac Day display at the funeral home which is located beside Richmond Memorial Gardens. The display of World War One memora-bilia includes an original field service pocket book from 1914 and examples of trench art soldiers made while over-

seas. Last year, Val provided morning tea following the Anzac Day services and went through 20 dozen packets of Anzac biscuits. This year, local busi-nesses, Pomeroys Coffee & Tea Co and Wooden Spoon Café have donated cof-fee, tea and biscuits and Sport Tasman will provide serving staff for the day. The morning tea, organized by Rich-mond Unlimited and Tasman Funeral Homes, will be held outside the War Memorial Hall in Cambridge St, Rich-mond on Saturday April 25. It will follow the Richmond Anzac Day ser-vice which starts at Sundial Square at 10.45am with the service at Richmond War Memorial Gardens at 11am.

The Easter Bunny has delivered 1200 chocolate Easter eggs to the Richmond Mall for a children’s competition but mall manager Belinda de Clercq is worried that might not be enough. The Richmond Mall Easter Egg Hunt started last Saturday when children 10 years and younger started handing in entry forms to the mall’s information desk. All they needed to do was match the number of 10 giant eggs with the participating retailer displaying

that egg to win a chocolate Easter egg.Belinda says there was a lot of inter-est in the competition even before it started on Saturday. Details had been posted on the mall’s website and Facebook page last week re-sulting in an Easter egg hunt frenzy.“We bought 1200 but going by the interest that might not be enough,” Belinda says. The competition finishes this Sun-day. Entry forms are available at the information desk.

A group of Nelson men aiming to set a new speed record in Bonneville have gained sup-port from Mini New Zealand. In August this year, the group of Nelson mo-toring enthusiasts will attempt to set a new land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The team, campaigning under the name ‘Pro-ject 64,’ set the current land speed record of 236km/h for their class of Mini Cooper S in 2012. This year they are returning to the Salt with the goal of beating their own record and reach 280km/h.The Project 64 team, the name a nod to the year of manufacture of the Mini, as well as the New Zealand country calling code, will aim to set the record during a week of timed runs on the legendary salt flats at Bonneville Speed Week. By also running on Methanol and making changes to the car during the week to fit other classes, they will attempt to break three other records. “Bonneville has seen some Kiwi leg-ends perform on the world stage in years gone by and we’d love to emulate the success of these iconic characters,” said Guy Griffith, project cofounder and crew chief.“This started as an item on our bucket list of motor sport events to attend and, as more people heard about it in 2012, it very quickly grew into a full on assault on a long-standing record. We could have done it in something more modern and better suited to going fast in a straight line, but where’s the fun in that?”Garry Orton, project co-founder and team lo-gistics manager, says some would say that be-coming the world’s fastest classic Mini at Speed Week in 2012 would have been enough. “But we know we can make this little car go much faster. The salt gets into your blood too, so we feel we have to go back, fly the New Zealand flag, and show the world how great this Mini is.”The team is after more sponsorship to help them reach their goal, but have already part-nered up with Mini New Zealand, Maersk Line, Total Lubricants and the World of Wearable Art and Collectable Cars Museum. Bad Drivers:When a vehicle, including bicycles, is indicating a right hand turn, it is

wrong for a vehicle to attempt to pass on the right.Similarly for a left hand turn.I do not appreciate bad drivers doing this,

especially when I get knocked down as happened recently.Like the rule of the road at sea, the over-taking vessel must keep clear.Motorists should remember that bicycles were here before motor cars so it is up to the newcomers to accommodate to exist-

ing use. That means that cyclists must accommodate to pedestrians. I P Bieleski, Nelson.

Grey Power:The Nelson Greypower AGM was aptly held on

April Fool's Day. I commend chair-man Mac Welch, Federation Board member for his patience, and his summing up "disorganized sham-bles" was appropriate. He won't be back. I commend Federation scru-tineers from Rangiora and three Marlborough Executive members on their efforts to gain some vote count with ridiculous documenta-tion. Twice, I asked the chairman for the voting strength of the meet-ing. Twice, those responsible failed to deliver. I, as an observer, asked the scrutineers what the total num-ber of eligible votes was. They were not told. At 2pm I asked keeper of the proxy votes, Pat Carrick, for the total number of eligible proxy vote - 'don't know'! At least this count should be 100 per cent accurate.

No totals of financial and unfinancial at-tendees - they gave up recording when the queue was 200 metres long.As an observer, the scrutineers provide the best totals available. There were no checks and balances to ensure the vote was not corrupted. The whole election process was better suit-ed to Kampala than Nelson. As predicted, the proxy votes completely outnumbered the attendees. Well manipu-lated, best of luck to reincarnated presi-dent Gordon Currie - you will need it. Errol Millar.

Parking Fail on Hardy St:Soooooooo hilarious when it's a senile old lady, hahaha. Oh, it's so

cute.. poor sausage. Bit different if it had been one of these "bloody foreign driv-ers," wouldn't it NZ? You'd be out there all vigilante type, ripping keys out of ignitions and puffing out your chests, filming it on your mobile phones, but no, because it's some dear old biddy, it's kinda funny, even though she is obviously a threat to herself and the public on the roads, and should probably have her licence revoked because it's obvious she lacks the proper mental cognitive function to drive a car any more. Doc Sanchez

I swear this had to be the same lady that I saw go on the inside of

the Haven/ Halifax roundabout instead of

around it!!! Anna Burns.

The fact she is still driving is pretty scary. While this is funny, what

about reading road signs, traffic lights or young kids crossing the road. Diane Chandler.

And this lady has a licence??? If her driving is as bad as her parking,

she's an accident waiting to happen. Janelle Thorpe.

Live Grenade exploded in Richmond:I heard this last night!! Crazy. Elaine Lourens.

So that's what that noise I heard was. A frigging bomb going off.

Yikes. Beverley Miedema.

So pleased I wasn't hearing things. Peter Walbran.

Wow, we heard it too in Richmond. Was a very deep-sounding explo-

sion. Giselle Fish.

Mortimers Upholstery and Marine Covers has become a well known lo-cal business, specialising in soft textiles for vehicles, commercial equipment and boats. Based in the heart of Rich-mond, the team at Mortimers are not only proud to offer a finish that exceeds their customers expectations, but pro-vide products that serve every aspect of the community from agriculture, horticulture, the primary industries, automotive and marine. These include canopy’s, road covers, storage covers, agricultural covers, boat seats, interior linings, carpets, repairs and more. They pride themselves on producing a qual-ity product at a fair price, backed up by good customer service. Call in and meet the team at Mortimers or contact them on 544 6352 to discuss your soft textile requirements.

A safe vehicle needs a correctly fitted windscreen and that’s just what Glass-worx Nelson offer. Windscreens are an important safety feature of vehicles for several reasons; without one, your pas-senger airbags are useless, the pillars by themselves cannot support the weight of a vehicle in a rollover and you will not be kept inside the car should you choose not to wear a seatbelt. Glass-worx Nelson can correctly install your

windscreen and being a quality, repair focused company, you can be assured that they will always try to repair where possible to save you the cost of a full re-placement. If a new windshield is neces-sary, Glassworx Nelson guarantee a fin-ish that puts quality over profit and will take care of all insurance claims, plus, their mobile service is free. Glassworx Nelson also provides window tinting to reduce heat and glare inside and en-hancing the cars style and appearance. Give them a call today to discuss your windscreen requirements.

Whatever the issue, bring your car to the team at Advanced Auto-motive, they will work their magic to get you back on the road. From WOF, mainte-nance of any kind, servicing or brake and clutch repair - you name it; you can get it done to the highest standards, and, with winter on its way it’s important to check a few things out to ensure comfort-able and safe motoring. Tyres are one important element for safe driving in the winter

months and if you want to keep your engine reliable on those chilly morn-ings, now’s a good time to get your cool-ant changed. As MTA members you are guaranteed a professional finish and a trustworthy job from Advanced Au-tomotive. If you’re worried about any aspect of your car, come in and see the team today in the bright green building on 4a Gladstone Rd. With courtesy cars available and free pickup and delivery in Richmond, it couldn’t be easier to travel safe this winter

As much as we enjoyed the hot summer months, the seasons are changing and that means new conditions on the roads. With many cars now on 12 month WOFs, a number of cars are being driven on extremely worn tyres due to people not checking them regularly. A new WOF today does not mean your car will be legal or safe for the next 12 months. Daryl Smith, owner and operator of Tyreworld Richmond says he’s seen some vehicles tyres in a very sorry state, but you can ensure your tyres will stand up to winter road conditions with a simple visual inspection that Daryl is offering free

Mortimers Upholstery can provide a range of custom made, quality products that may prove useful over the winter months.

In an effort to help shooters get their eye in, and all others who may just want to have a play, the annual 80 target sporting clay shoot is on this Sunday, starting at 9am.Sporting clays differ from the trap clays which are released from a small hut in front of the shooter, and skeet which is released from two towers to the left and right of the shooter who has to stand at set intervals.Sporting is more out in the open shooting and can be compared to a more natural shoot, where the clay targets are released from within bushes and open spots by trees. It is well-suited to duck and waterfowl shooters. With over $1500 in prizes, includ-ing two new shotguns, it’s definitely worth a look. As in past years, it’s a very relaxed day, and the club

grounds in Valley Rd, Golden Downs, is looking the best it has for some time.Cost for the shoot is $66 and the famous lunch and refreshments are available at very reasonable prices. Also on hand will be a number of representatives from local shops with displays and lots of great ad-vice. The club welcomes all shooters from all levels and is looking forward to a great turnout.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer now past it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product. This season has seen the use of a tried and proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, differ-ent products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X It Ant ap-plication your sprayer must have no spray resi-due from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full Inspection of the property is

required so check all these places:Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences includ-ing the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. Firewood piles, downpipes, rubbish bins, bbq’s, outdoor furniture, pot plants, vehicles, decks and any trees over-hanging the boundary.

The best time to look for ants is in the heat of the day when they are most active.

1. X-It Ant™: 225ml pack (Only use OUT-DOORS). Spray all ant trails, path edges, drive-way edges, curb & channelling, fences including posts, rails, pergola posts etc. Tree trunks re-quire a minimum 1 metre band up and around them. Bushes / plants that touch the house need to be pruned so that they no longer do so. Spray a 1 metre band up and out all the way around the exterior of the house.

2. Bi Force® Granules: 500g shaker packIn gardens, long grass, compost, and any areas where X-It Ant™ cannot be applied successfully.

3. Dust 2 Dust™: 100g puffer packUse for the killing of ants in wall and ceiling cavities, cracks and crevices, under inaccessible decking, under cupboards and into retaining walls.

The Wakefield Apple Fair will celebrate this year’s harvest by turning the region’s most pop-ular fruit into juice - vintage style.Christine Grieder and her part-ner Kim John Kerslake, own Willow Bank Heritage Village, where the fair will be held this Sunday. The idea started when a friend Sylvia Huxtable, men-tioned how much she missed the apple harvest fair held in the United Kingdom each year. Christine decided to get some friends together and organise one herself. It is the only day of the year that the couple opens their unique property up to the public. Three large presses and crush-es have been supplied by the Small Sips Wine Club which will handle juicing of bulk apples and Christine has sup-plied two smaller vintage hand-presses from the 1940s. People are invited to bring ap-ples and their own containers for the juice with around 10kgs of apples making approximate-ly five litres of juice. There will also be stalls sell-ing a variety of food, using traditional apple recipes. Ap-ples will be available to juice for those who don’t have their own. Children’s games and pony rides will be on offer and a scout group will be cook-

ing sausages on an antique 100-year-old stove. An old-fashioned photo studio has been set up with replica art-work backdrop and Waverley St Kindergarten will be taking family photos as a fundraiser. There are 15 relocated and restored buildings within the grounds including a church built in the 1880s relocated from Collingwood St, and the original Stoke Gaol construct-ed in the 1940s. Every build-ing has been lovingly restored by Christine and Kim, who have been collecting vintage machinery and bric and brac for 12 years. Each houses a dif-ferent theme of vintage collect-ibles including toys, clothing, china, electrical equipment, an old-fashioned sweet shop and a haberdashery and general store.Visitors will be entertained by live music from The Plink-

ers and performances during the course of the day by the Morris Dancers. A highlight will be a short performance of the ringing of the bells inside the relocated Collingwood St church. The bells, originally used at Wai-iti School in 1875, are now stored at the Nelson School of Music. Last year, around 200 people attended the free community event, however with more people becoming aware of the event, it is hoped this year will be even bigger and better. The Wakefield Apple Fair will be held rain or shine this Sun-day from 12.30pm to 4pm at Willow Bank Heritage Village, 79 Wakefield-Kohatu High-way. Organisers are look-ing for more stall holders to sell bric and brac, hand made wares, food and apple related items. If you are interested contact Amy on 541 8001.

The Nelson Waimea Gun Club is hosting a sporting clay event this weekend to help duck-hunters get their eye in.

So, save the date and head to the Tahunanui Function Centre on Sunday, April 12 be-tween 10am and 4pm.

The showcase will feature around 20 exhibitors who can help you with every element of your wedding. Whether you want to ar-

rive in style in an executive lim-ousine or are still on the hunt for your perfect wedding gown. There will also be local photographers, florists, hair and makeup experts, ideas for the dream honeymoon destination, cake makers, suits for hire and if you want to take those first steps as man and wife around a dance floor, then booking some quickstep lessons may be your first port of call. With Kahurangi Estate offering wine tasting from their display and the venue decked out in all its glory, any couple will be in mat-rimonial heaven. The showcase promises to be a relaxed, boutique experience where the bride and groom to be can explore the best of

Nelson’s wedding businesses and spend as long as they want discussing ideas for their big day. The exhibitors can offer you personal and expert advice on your wedding, so take advantage of their years of

The showcase can help from the concept stage of planning to those final touches to your wedding; their stress-free, no pressure environment will make decision-making and idea gathering fun and enjoyable. Event organ-iser Yvonne Bilderbeck encourages any couple getting married to come along. “We’ve got the tables set up with different colours and about two of every exhibitor, so you aren’t just lim-ited to one business. It’s an ideal opportunity where everyone is in the same place and you can spend as much time as you like talking to the professionals.” Their expert advice, opin-ions and handy hints are invaluable when it comes to catering to a crowd, finding the best locations for photos and much more. Brides bring your bridesmaids, your mothers and especially your groom, and get amongst the ideas. There will be lots of giveaways and one lucky couple will walk away with the ul-timate wedding package worth over $5000, contributed to by businesses such as Tahuna Function Centre, Jackett Island Studio Accom-modation, Sandra Johnson Boutique Photography, Audio

Entertainment, Nelson Flowers and Gifts, Tahuna Holiday Park and The Dream Maker.

Wakefield School children went on a swashbuckling ad-venture last week, which in-volved intrigue, maps and a buried treasure. Around 150 children from the Maitai syndicate, who have been studying pirates during the first term, visited Rabbit Is-land in search of a hidden prize. Their quest started when, Pi-rate, Richard de Hamel, wan-dered through their school unannounced at the beginning of term, looking for his lost treasure. When he left, the children stumbled across a treasure map which he had accidentally left behind. The map was of Rabbit Island, which led the children to study the map and learn about pi-rates. It was then decided that the students would take the Mapua Ferry over to Rabbit Island in search of the treasure. When they arrived, they found Pirate Richard and his crew, also searching for the riches. The children then participated in games including canon ball throwing and barrel rolling before starting on their hunt. They were given spades and set off to dig for the treasure in the

sand. The buried treasure chest was eventually found near Pi-rate Richard’s camp. The children were excited to find it contained a trove of chocolate bars.“From a teacher’s perspective, it has been great for imaginative

play, creativity and descriptive writing,” teacher Anna Do-blanovic says. “A pirate ship was built by the children in class and it has been a really high interest topic - the kids have absolutely loved eve-ry minute of it.”

If you look at the news it’s easy to despair over the state of the world. There’s ISIS in the Middle East, drug cartels in South America, disease in Africa, and climate change all over the place. It’s hard not to be a bit

pessimistic about it all. You certainly wouldn’t be the first person to lament over the evil in the world. In the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, Qoheleth (“the teacher”) laments that there is no one to comfort the oppressed in the world and that humans are no better off than animals for we both end up in the ground eventually. Needless to say, Qoheleth wasn’t exactly the life of the party.

I believe there came another teacher. One that taught about a new kingdom that was bursting forth into this world. One who was crucified, buried, and rose again. A teacher whose students would go on to form a community of faith that would still celebrate his resurrection 2000 years later. And make no mistake; the physical resurrection is the foundation of Christianity. The apostle Paul goes as far as to say in his letter to the Corinthians (included in the Bible) that if Jesus didn’t rise from the grave then the Gospel is in vain. Contrary to popular thought in recent years, the Gospel isn’t that we’ll all shoot up to heaven to sit on clouds and sip margaritas while the world burns below (I’m sorry if you were genuinely hoping for a heavenly happy hour). Rather I see the Bible teaches that God will restore and resurrect this world and in doing so He will remove

all that is cruel with the world. And so to me Paul is hammering home an essential truth: if I lose sight of what God did in Christ I will lose sight of what He will do in the future. And that is why I celebrate the resurrection.

specialised machinery can be very costly, espe-cially when you may only need it once, so it al-ways pays to give Richmond Hire a call; they could save you a lot of money. Wayne and the team know how busy contractors and tradesmen can be, often working to contract deadlines, so they’ve worked hard to provide a service that not only supplies the best tools when they’re needed, but they support you during the project too, so if anything unforeseen happens or the circumstances of the job change, they will be there right away. And of course, with a brand new premises purpose built to cater to those needing equipment fast, the turnaround time for those on the job, or even the home handyman, will make them your number one hire shop. Richmond Hire is also flexible on the period of time you can hire their machinery, whether it’s a weekend job to shred some garden waste or a four month long project. If you’re a new tradesman to the area and know you’ll need to get your hands on some equipment temporarily, Wayne encourages you to email your trading name and address through to him at [email protected] and they will get an account set up with a 10 per cent discount. Richmond Hire is also happy to offer a conveni-ent pick-up or delivery service, especially when it comes to transporting larger equipment such as diggers that requires a two and a half ton tow-ing capacity.

Richmond Hire doesn’t just cater to Richmond, their hire services are the perfect solution for any contractor or handyman that wants to work with the best tools in the trade. Their convenient Beech Rd location means they’re right at the end of the motorway, plus being a locally owned and operated business, they’re committed to provid-ing you with quality over profit. Team Super Adventure Club won the 12-hour Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race by just two minutes, while The Woodies made it two from two after rafting, moun-tainbiking and hiking through rivers and mountains near Murchison on Saturday.Super Adventure’s Tim Fraser-Harris, Ben-ni Moulam and Patrick Higgins of Nelson won the 68km team’s adventure race in 11hr 21min. They were second early in the race which started with a raft down the Gowan and Buller rivers and a climb up the 1469m Mount Murchison.Super Adventure maintained that position on the mountainbike up Two Mile Creek and into the Owen River before making their winning break on Life Style Account-ings’s Nathan Sturrock, Lachlan Brownlie and Hamish Sturmer on the trek through the Sandstone River and Frying Pan Creek. But their race wasn’t over as they had to withstand a late challenge from a fast-fin-ishing Team Aniseed Valley which caught them entering the final transition, setting up a frenetic mountainbike ride to finish. The two teams were side-by-side at the final check point before Super Adventure unleashed a super-fast descent down a steep farm track to get back in front and secure the win. “It was a really close racing the whole way,” Benni says. “It was amaz-ing finish only two minutes apart after 11 or 12 hours of racing.”

Tim says they decided to do the race to-gether this year after racing in separate teams last year. “We all know each other so decided to do it together this year. We can all navigate a bit so we managed to get through alright.”Tim says the highlight of the race was “the stunning view from the top of Mt Mur-chison”.“We were the last team to get up there and

have a view. The weather closed in about a minute after we got there so we were so lucky.”Team Aniseed Valley finished 27 minutes clear of third-placed Life Style Accounting and was also the fastest mixed team. The team’s female racer, Waimea College teach-er Jane Orbell, had coached Nathan and Lachlan, when they were in the school’s Hillary Challenge adventure racing team.

It was a long day for Team On Course of Course’s Steve Strange, Pete Hall and Colin Pearson who didn’t live up to their name, finishing the 12-hour race in 17hr 51min. The Woodies were in a class of their own in the six-hour race winning in 5hr 45min. Malcolm Edridge and Brad Wallace, who are forestry contractors, were also in The Woodies winning six-hour team last year.Waimea Ocean Gate’s Libby Malthus, El-liott Kennedy and Cameron Jones were the second fastest six-hour team in 6hr 18min while the Cereal Killers Callum Irvine, Paul Dukes and Stephen Busby were third in 6hr 23min.2 Fast 4 Waimea’s Hamish Anderson, Clay-ton Anderson and Finn Mitchell, with an average age of 13, won the three-hour race in 5hr 26min.Race director and world champion adven-ture racer Nathan Fa’avae paid tribute to course designers Mark Rayward and Dan Moore who set out a spectacular and chal-lenging route for both the six and 12-hour teams. “A few of the racers rated it as one of the best 12 or 24-hour courses they have done,” Nathan says. “We were trying to give people a real wilderness experience and a course where they needed to navigate well. We also wanted to get the 12-hour teams up high which we did by sending them up Mt Murchison. And it was great to see an exciting finish.”

The Wakefield Bowling Club’s lat-est centre title winners have come a long way in the last three years.Margaret Eames and Rae Peter-son didn’t win a game when they played in their first Nelson Centre women’s pairs tournament three years ago. Last year they managed just one win but this year they went all the way to win the final on March 15 and Wakefield’s first centre title in 14 years.“We couldn’t believe we were win-ning,” Margaret says. “It was sur-real but we just kept on saying to each other ‘come on we can win this’ and we did.”But it wasn’t easy with Margaret and Rae just edging past United’s Maureen Gibbons and Di Han-cock 12-11 in the quarter final. United was holding two shots with the score tied at 11-11 on the last end when Margaret calmly stepped up and won the game with her final bowl. The semifinal was just as close with Margaret and Rae beating the well-performed United pair of Barbara McGregor and Yvonne Closey before defeating Motueka’s Moana Cross and Sheryl Riordan 14-12 in the final.“All the games were close and could have gone either way,” Rae, who lives in Stoke, says. “We re-ally had to concentrate for two full days - it was mentally and physi-cally exhausting.”It is easily the biggest win for Rae and Margaret, who have only been playing bowls for six and seven years respectively and who are still regarded as “babies of the game”. “I’ve won the club singles and been a member of the winning

pairs, triples and fours this year and won Champion of Champion junior singles and pairs but the centre title is easily our biggest

win,” Margaret says. All the centre titles will be pre-sented in an awards ceremony at Saxton Pavilion on May 8.

Waimea Old Boys prepared for StokeStar and Garter Waimea Old Boys may need to switch to wet-weather rugby mode when they play Stoke in round four of the Tasman Trophy and di-vision one club rugby compe-tition at Greenmeadows this Saturday.Unbeaten Waimea Old Boys has played open, attacking rug-by on hard and fast grounds in its three wins so far this season and coach Mark Milne is confi-dent they can continue to play well in the wet. However, Mark acknowledges that playing a resurgent Stoke on their home ground will be a tough proposition.“Stoke have been re-invigorat-ed this year. They have some very good players with Stu Tunnicliff leading the forwards well and Kerehama Barrett giv-ing them a threat at the back.

“This rain could also make things interesting because, it’s no secret, we like to play ex-pansive rugby. But we do have a couple of guys who can put us in the right place on the park and I’m happy with the way our forwards have been going so I’m sure we’ll adapt if it’s wet.”Mark says he was pleased with the team’s performance in last week’s 48-10 win against Ka-hurangi and he was looking for further improvement this Saturday.“We were a lot more patient and more direct than last week. We were also more accurate around the breakdowns which is important because they can be such a lottery.”Waimea Old Boys B beat Riwa-ka 33-3 in their game at Cook’s Reserve last week.

Forty-nine ladies will compete in their first ever triathlon this Sun-day as part of the ever-popular McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triath-lon.The event was first held in 1988 and now sees more than 200 girls and women take part on the roads in the Maitai, The Brook and in the pool at Riverside.

Organisers say 225 have registered for this year’s event.“The discipline distances have been tried, tested and proven over the years, and are just enough for those setting out to complete their first ever triathlon or for the more competitive who challenge each other for age group honours.”Entries open until Wednesday at www.nelsonevents.co.nz

Easter was anything but peaceful for those competing in the drag races in Motueka last Saturday. The Nelson Drag Racing Associa-tion hosted one of four national meets at the Motueka air strip, that not only determined the class winners on the day but allowed drivers to earn points that will go towards their internal club track series. While last Saturday was the final chance for drivers to gain points for their club series, it also deter-mined the winner of the Keith Whiting trophy. The trophy is a

competition between the North and South Islands that has been running for around ten years.Drivers are paired off and compete to earn points for their island, the South Island taking the trophy off the North with 15 points to eight.Top performer of the weekend was Wanganui’s Adrian Rivers with the best ET of the day and best mph running at 186.97, in his 1999 RE Dragster. Nelson’s Andy Urwin-Wells won the competition bike class, Kiley Morrison won the su-per street class and Rob Beaumont won the Grudge class.
