Drivers often get frustrated when they are delayed by road works but Higgins Contracting’s super-cheerful stop-go girl Cin-dy Thompson is doing her best to change all that. For the last three weeks, Cindy has been helping traffic flow at the road works at the intersec-tion of State Highway 6 and An-iseed Valley and Edens roads. The road has been reduced to one lane while the intersection is being widened to make it safer and the stop-go team have been

busy keeping the traffic moving. But instead of becoming an-noyed at the delays, many of the drivers are enjoying interacting with the smiley Cindy. Burly truck drivers can be seen laugh-ing and car drivers tooting as Cindy waves, signals and dances her way through the day.“You have to be very aware of the traffic in this job but I also like to interact with the driv-ers,” Cindy says. “I have lots of people who smile and say ‘you have made my day’ - I feel I have

claustrophobic too so it was really scary being trapped - I’m still see-ing visions of it now.”Tracy, who uses the crossing daily as she walks to work and usually goes home for lunch, says she has always had concerns about its safety. She says many drivers and pedestrians are uncertain about the rules relating to courtesy crossings and that creates confu-sion, increasing the risk of acci-dents. “A lot of pedestrians think they have the right of way but drivers don’t have to stop. They should be replaced by pedestri-ans crossings then everything would be clearer.

“The courtesy crossings might have been okay 10 or 15 years ago but Richmond has got so big. There are so many cars and people on Queen St now they need to make the cross-ings safer.”The New Zealand Road Code states that drivers and pedestrians using courtesy cross-ings should treat each other with polite, respectful consideration. However, it makes it clear that “drivers are not obliged to stop at courtesy crossings” and says

pedestrians need to cross them carefully.Warren Ludemann, who owns Made For Men directly opposite the crossing, says it is the sec-ond accident he has seen there

and something needs to be done to make it safer. He says there needs to be signage erected to make it clear that pedestrians have to give way to traffic.“I saw the young boy go

flying through the air when he was hit a couple of years ago and I heard the yelling when the lady was hit this time,” Warren says. “I’ve also seen a lot of near misses and verbal altercations and, un-fortunately, it’s only a matter of time before a serious accident.”Richmond School principal Tim Brenton says he has been con-cerned about the safety of the crossings for a number of years. Many children attending the school use the crossings includ-ing Jordan Stirling-Rowling who was hit by the car on the same crossing when he was a pupil in 2012. “There’s such a lack of understanding and that’s what makes it hard for the children,” Tim says. “Sometimes they’ll wait and a driver will stop and usher them across and the next time the car won’t slow down or stop - it’s very confusing for them.“Richmond is getting bigger - it’s not a small country town any-

more - so those crossings don’t work. They need to be replaced by pedestrian crossings to make it clear who has to give way.”Richmond councillor Judene Ed-gar agrees that something needs to be done to make the cross-ings safer. She says the council in Hanmer Springs has painted “a couple of yellow lines” on the footpath at courtesy crossings to make pedestrians stop and look and that could be an option for Queen St. Judene says the latest accident highlights the need for the configuration of crossings be considered when the Queen St upgrade starts next year. The police are still investigating the accident.

Waimea Weekly says: We believe something needs to be done with the courtesy crossings on Queen St. We’d like to see signs erected to give some clarity for pedestrians and motorists.

Signs would make courtesy crossing safer, says retailerFROM PAGE 1

Another pedestrian has been hit on the Queen St courtesy crossing. What can be done to make the crossings safer?

Pam Coltman, Richmond.

“It is really up to the pedestri-ans to make eye contact with the driver in the car. Not every driver looks and pedestrians can be very careless and don’t think.”

Wendell Field, Richmond.

“It is a bit confusing for every-one. Most cars are courteous but others you think are going to stop, don’t. I think we need to make them into a proper crossing.”

Daniel Carr, Richmond.

“They are a courtesy crossing and legally people don’t need to stop, so pedestrians need to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road.”

Robyn Tilley, Brightwater.

“I think the crossings need to be painted more clearly but there are also a lot of people talking on their phone or with headphones in and not taking notice when crossing.”

There have been calls for a sign similar to this to be erected at the Queen St crossings.

The black market for meat in the Nelson region is threaten-ing to turn rural areas into the Wild West, say locals.Poachers have been under the spotlight recently with a spate of incidences reported in the region since January and two men convicted in the Nelson District Court of unlawful hunting. And last week, Nelson police announced they are investigat-ing the discovery of two cattle carcasses on a forestry track in the Dovedale area. The two Friesian-cross yearlings were found on the north side of Ja-cob’s Ladder on the Thorpe-Orinoco Rd.Agribusiness manager Ashley Peter has been farming in the Dovedale area for over 30 years and says he is seriously consid-ering putting in surveillance cameras around his property. “Poaching has always been a problem but the incidences are increasing and they now have more hi-tech night vision equipment and sophisticated guns,” says Ashley. Not only is he worried about the loss of stock and income but the issue of safety too. “I take the kids out spotlight-ing but I have got to be extra

careful about doing that now, the people responsible need to stop and think about what they are doing, it’s only a matter of time until someone gets hurt,” says Ashley.Sergeant Rob Crawford agrees and says there is a serious dan-ger to people in our rural com-munities.“We recently had an incidence where someone was spot light-ing for deer very close to a house, they were shooting in the dark and may not have even been able to see there was a house there, which was very dangerous,” say Rob.As a result of Federated Farm-ers lobbying the government on unlawful hunting, the law has now changed and courts are now onboard with the con-

cerns of the rural community. “The law used to be that un-lawful hunting incurred a $500 penalty and the courts were constrained by that penalty. That has all changed now, if found guilty of unlawful hunt-ing or death of stock, you could receive up to two years impris-onment and a $10,000 fine for an individual or $100,000 fine for a corporation”, says Rob. Police also have good surveil-lance tools including thermal imaging equipment and have been given more powers. They can now obtain search war-rants, licences can be disquali-fied through the courts and firearms can be revoked. “We are asking the rural com-munity to start asking ques-tions and taking registrations. In relation to security, many farms have installed trial cam-eras which is assisting in pros-ecuting offenders,”Federated Farmers Nelson Provincial president, Martin O’Connor says that poaching is a real issue that is not going away. “It is a worry that it could become the Wild West. The problem is that it happens in the dark of night, we need peo-ple to report anything suspi-cious and for police to step up, the whole community needs to work together,” says Martin.

Those with an IQ “taller than average” took their chances at getting into Men-sa as they attended a testing session on Saturday.Mensa is open to anybody who scores in the top two percent in a fluid intel-ligence test. Judith Tuckwell, testing coordinator for Nelson, says she always noticed she had to “edit” her conversa-tions heavily before joining Mensa in the late 1960s. “When I joined Mensa I discovered that, when I am enthusias-tic about something, I can overwhelm other people. When I was actually in a Mensa group I suddenly realised that I could say exactly what I liked and I would get a response that I had only dreamt of getting before. It’s a bit like a horse being let out of a stable going for a gallop, and I can just go for it.”Judith, now in her 70s, was the 27th Mensan in New Zealand. She started a social group in the Hawkes Bay before moving to Nelson.“That is what I’d like to create in Nel-son. I’d love to have a mixed group. Mixed ages, mixed interests and the delight of the conversations.”There are around 400 Mensans in New

Zealand but only two known in Nelson. There is no requirement to join Mensa other than scoring in the top two per-cent of an IQ test. Darren Stevenson is the second Nelson member, joining nine years ago in his 30s. He says there were around 20 members in the city at the time.

“I joined after Testination, a TV series about IQ. I realised I was a bit smarter than I thought I was, so then I did the Mensa test. For me, you can walk into a room and you’re accepted.”For more information see www.mensa.org.nz or contact Judith on 0210 4036 7998.

SNOW: Snow is already falling at Rainbow Ski Area with 10cm at the top of the hill, and mar-keting and events coordinator Georgie Tudor-Jones says it’s sticking around. “Last year, we had no snow in April and only a little bit in May, so it is a definite good sign for the season.”The ski area is due to open on July 4.

BUSINESS TO PROMOTE CONCERTS: A new business venture has been launched in the hope of bringing live international music acts to Nelson. Showcase Nelson was originated by Nelson business consultant Stu Allan, who proposed an annual event, commencing in February 2016. Suggested music artists include Annie Lennox, Mark Knopfler, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry and Simply Red.

MOULDY PEACHES: A Nelson mother was “disgusted” to find a can of peaches that her daughter opened for dessert were so mouldy it was just a green mess. Kayla Heath says the can was purchased just weeks earlier and did not have an expiry date printed on it.

BURNING CAR FOUND DOWN BANK: A burning car with human remains in it was found down a bank near the start of the Whangamoa Reserve on Sunday afternoon. Both Nelson and Hira fire trucks attended the scene along with a large number of police. The incident was first reported by Nelson Live. The car was lifted from the bank by a crane on Monday afternoon and the body will undergo a post mortem examination which police hope will confirm the identity of the deceased wom-an. Police say DNA testing may be required to confirm the identity.

If you live in the Nelson region, there’s a pretty good chance that Wayne Egg-ers has had something to do with the timber used to build your house.Wayne retired last week after more than 40 years in the timber trade in Nelson, and it’s fair to say he has probably seen more posts, poles and timber loaded up on trucks and dispatched to build-ing sites than anyone else. And, after starting off logging trees for WE Wilkes in 1973 and ending his career as trade sales manager for Placemakers Saxton Rd branch, he has also been involved in every stage of the timber industry.“I started off in banking and then went off on my OE,” Wayne says. “It wasn’t until I came back I went into forestry logging post wood and poles for WE Wilkes Appleby plant.“Then Odlins bought out Wilkes and the forestry and sawmill manager Royce Seymour retired so I took over his job. There was quite a bit to it - man-aging Odlins forests and logging crews and log buying and exporting. “But then Winstones bought out Od-lins and sold off all the forests so I be-came the timber manager at the Queen St site. It was quite big back then - it extended halfway into where the Rich-mond Mall car park is now.”When Placemakers took over Win-stones, Wayne became the manager of the Queen St site where he built-up the trade sales department and set up their

frame and truss plant in Richmond. Wayne completed his final career move nine years ago when Placemakers closed its Queen St site and relocated to Saxton Rd where he continued his role as trade sales manager.Although Wayne says “wood is still wood”, he has seen a number of big changes in the timber and hardware trade over the last 40 years. The in-troduction of computerised cutting, pre-nailed frame and trusses and an explosion in the range of “products that provide a solution for every building problem”, have made building faster and easier. “When I started, they were selling wet timber in packs with mixed lengths. Now everything is kiln dried and cut to set lengths and you’d never build a house without prefabricated

frames and trusses.“In the old days a builder really would build a house. He’d pitch the roof and cut the framing - he’d do everything. “These days builders just fit a house together which is sad but it’s just the modern way. Time is money and all these changes mean they can build a house really quickly now.”Wayne says he will miss working with all the great people in the timber and hardware trade and building industry but hints that he may not have finished quite yet.“I haven’t thought about what I’ll do when I’ve finished. I just want to wind down and get my thoughts together but I’m sure there are some opportunities out there - I still have some petrol left in the tank.”

Holiday makers will be able to en-joy brand new facilities next sum-mer with stage two of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve redevelopment underway. In January of 1936, a small par-cel of land was set aside as public domain for camping at Kaiteriteri and placed under the oversight of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board. They are responsible for managing the Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp, local store, café and restaurant. Stage two of the Kaiteriteri Rec-reation Reserve redevelopment has commenced with the old store being demolished. “We hope that people will enjoy it more and the changes will tidy up the flow of traf-fic and will bring people together in one central area,” says Chris Hawkes, chairman of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board. The land for the new Kaiteriteri store has been dug out and filled making way for the foundations to be laid. The plans involve a new general store located on a simi-lar footprint to the old store with around eight motel units above. The area between the store and the cafe out to the road will also be developed with a pedestrian only

courtyard at the same level as the existing cafe deck. Tourism conces-sion booths will be situated in this area in addition to outside furni-ture. The petrol pumps will be relo-cated to the back of the new carpark and there are also some changes to the cafe to facilitate service into the courtyard. The surrounding area will also receive a makeover with grounds around the lagoon devel-oped and a boardwalk constructed.“The new landscaping will make use of the area far better than it is now, there will be more green spac-es and native trees,” says Chris.Stage one of the redevelopment was completed in November last year and included a new administration block with reception, offices, first aid room, staff amenities, a caretak-er’s flat and a conference room for up to 50 people. Two temporary portacom buildings have been established in the main carpark area beside the playground and stock a limited range of prod-ucts and will remain until the new store is finished. Fuel will not be available for at least three months while it is relocated to the main car-park.IMB Construction Ltd of Nelson are the contractors of the rebuild which is due to be completed by the end of November this year.

The Kaiteriteri general store has been pulled down with a new one to be built before the summer.

Opening weekend was a mixed one for duck shooters with ducks giving them the slip in early morning fog that shrouded in-land areas and flying high and out of range in clear blue skies on the coast. But Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game acting manager Lawson Davey says the ducks didn’t escape unscathed with hunt-ers who were in the “right place” getting their bag limits. “Some did pretty well while others strug-gled,” Lawson says. “We were ranging around Springs Junction and it was very foggy so the ducks were flying high and couldn’t see the decoys.“I spoke to a hunter who’d been out on the Waimea Estuary who said there were rea-sonable numbers of birds about, but due to the fine calm weather most were flying

pretty high. But then we saw one pond in Maruia where the hunters had got their limit by 10am.”Lawson says hunters were well behaved with rangers, who this year were joined by police officers, only seizing one shotgun from a hunter without a licence who was using illegal lead shot. “We haven’t had the police come along with us for a few years so it was good to get them out there. They were checking for firearms licences and to make sure there were no issues with alcohol.Lawson says the number of hunters shoot-ing around the region was down this year with many of them deciding to shoot on the West Coast or Canterbury. There are about 900 game bird shooting licence holders in the Nelson-Tasman region.

As a young mother, Raylene Stringer had to ditch her dream to become a nurse, but ten years on she’s ready for another crack at it.Raylene decided that studying to be a nurse while raising a young child and pay-ing the bills was too much to handle, so she instead turned to a career as a vet nurse. But with her son now grown up, Raylene has cut all luxuries from her life to head back to study full time and live her dream. “It’s hard, but I love it. I’ve given up a lot, the sacrifice is huge, but I’m not scared of a challenge.”The full time course at NMIT takes three years to complete, but it’s not just the stud-

ies that are hard work, juggling finances at home is just as tough. “I’ve had to tighten my belt on everything, the only thing I’ve allowed myself to keep is my gym mem-bership. Everything else has gone. I gave up coffee, although there is still instant sometimes.” Due to her tight budget, Raylene says she looked around for what scholarships she was eligible to apply for. She came across the Soroptomist International of Waimea Scholarship Grant and, after a gruelling selection process, was picked to receive $2500 from the group.Member Helen Bywater says there were 24 applicants this year and it was the tough-

est decision yet. “It was difficult this year. Very, very difficult. The thing that struck

us about Raylene is that she knows where she’s going. She’s being very brave going back to full time study and she had a clear vision about where she was heading.”The money can be used for anything that will help with her studies, says Helen, from paying power bills to study costs or even a dentist’s bill. Raylene says, when she found out that she’d won the scholarship she was delighted. “I was so excited. I laughed, I cried, all those emotions. It was amazing.”As part of the deal, Raylene must pay a cou-ple of visits to the soroptomists throughout the year and let them know how she’s going with her study.

Nelson Airport upgrade, what would you like to see?

Some better system for collect-ing bags etc other than outside

in the cold and rain. Antoinette Wood.

Lower airfares.Karyn Thomas.

Forget the terminal. Lets get a longer runway so we can land

bigger planes. Geoff Trevathan.

Improved baggage claim and longer runway. Our region is

screaming for that. Nothing wrong with the terminal. Andrea Grocott.

A cafe that stays open till the last flight leaves. Vanessa Cullen.

Better access, by that I mean di-rect flights to some of the smaller

places in NZ. Jo Cotton.

Definitely another cafe or cafe contractor that opens earlier, or

stays open until the last flight leaves. On a Sunday night closes at 7, I think. I've been delayed a couple of times for a hour or so, and they close the cafe leav-ing you with nothing to eat or drink. Jeff McLaren.

To be able to drive straight into the carpark without having to

crawl past the terminal first, dodging

pedestrians, taxis and rental cars. Vicki Reid.

A bigger area for short-term pick up and drop off. Sue Sara.

Spend the money on a longer run way. Some directs to / from

Aussie would be great for Nelson all around. We don't need a flashy terminal, it's all good how it is. Diana McClelland.

I actually don't mind the bag-gage claim or the airport as it is.

If the upgrade leads to increased fares then please leave as is! Cheaper fares and more destinations are what we need. Rachel Boyack.

Secure, safe, children's play area suitable for under 5s. I have of-

ten ended up stuck with my two year old waiting for delayed flights at Air NZ, it's a nightmare. Jezamine Dunlea.

The baggage claim area is awe-some. Leave it like that.

Lauren Rasmussen.

SPCA pours money into desexing cats. Do you think it's a good idea?

Make it available to everybody. Charge those without "hard-

ship cards" a little more, but even those without cards struggle. I know of a few people who can't afford to get their pets desexed even though they don't claim

benefits. Carole Krimchanski-Cooper.

Totally all for it. I think it's a very generous offer SPCA are doing.

Jo B Phil Borland.

If you can't afford an animal, don't get one simply because

it's lovely. The SPCA are helping sort the problem that others have created. Harsh, I know, soo many animals suffer needlessly. Great the SPCA are there for animals in need. Karen Rait.

This is awesome, but it seems like people think this should be the

norm. The SPCA are not there to pay for your pets. If you can't afford basic health care then don't get pets in the first place. This act of kindness from the SPCA will help prevent thousands of more un-wanted animals but it is a privilege, not a right. It's awful how something is of-fered to those in need, out of the good-ness of their hearts, but then people in-stantly want more. Natalie Street.

Yes. But it needs to be fair. Nikky Lohmann.

Its great! But I think people need to really think about the real cost

of a 'free' kitten. Desexing needs to be a priority. Sarah Brown.

Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Hope Range area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of OSPRI which runs the TBfree programme to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

Control Area:The Hope Range treatment area spans over 13,634 hectares of the Kahurangi National Park, near the Murchison District, on the eastern and western faces of the Hope Range. The southern boundary is Mount Murchison and the northern boundary is the head of the Hope River catchment.

Public access to the treatment area is either via Owen Valley East Road, or along State Highway 6 through to the Tadmor Saddle.

A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed by appointment at the office of Vector Free Marlborough Ltd (see contact below), the Tasman office of TBfree, McPherson Street, Richmond or the local Department of Conservation office in St Arnaud between 9:00am and 4:00pm weekdays.

Commencement Date:The operation will commence with the application of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets. Following completion of pre-feeding, the application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence on or after 20 May 2015, weather dependent.

Bait Description:Pre-feed: Non-toxic cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, non-dyed (brown in colour) – first aerial application

Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg sodium fluoroacetate (1080) – second aerial application.

Warning signs will be posted at all main public entry points:

Follow the instructions on the poison warning signs.

It is an offence to remove any signs posted for public information.

All relevant consents have been granted - refer to:• Department Of Conservation – Permission ID: • Public Health Service – Permission ID: • Tasman District Council Resource Consent - Permission ID:

Precautions:The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area.

Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.

Wild animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until the area is declared clear of pesticides.

HOPE RANGE AERIAL POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION

Campers nearly all sold“The first shipment has now been sold and the avail-able stock for September is running out quickly” says Pete Stukenberg from Richmond Cars and Commer-cials.For nearly two months he has been the new South Island dealer for the range of Auto Trail campervans. Built on the high performance chassis of the new Fiat Diesel they are assem-bled and built in Eng-land. An impressive 150 hp and six speed sequential auto means you will no longer be holding up the traffic uphill as you tour New Zealand. “They are changing the face of motorhomes in New Zealand,” says Pete.“These sell for only $130,000 plus on road and yet I still see 2010 campers second hand selling for $145,000 so that makes these a real bargain. And it’s all the latest technology and upgrades.” And a number of locals agree as Pete’s first shipment are now all sold.“I would seriously urge anyone considering buying one of these to come in and talk to us soon as. We are now placing our orders for September/October de-livery and at the rate they are selling we will run out of stock.” Pete reckons that the designers and build-ers have really got it right with these campers and the public are responding well. “It just makes sense when you have a look around the vehicle. Anti rattle cup-boards, full insect screens that discretely fold away, a decent size engine and probably the most important thing is that huge safety issue, a left hand entry cabin

door. Do you believe that some other brand campers let you out right hand side and here in NZ that’s right into the traffic!”Pete says he has had great feedback from customers and said a number of features are really standing out.

The permanent dou-ble bed, a full kitchen with pantry, a great sized bathroom with swivel toilet and sepa-rate shower and the huge amount of stor-age available. Add to that ceiling fans, a three way fridge with icebox and swivel front seats that quite frankly are like big lazy boys and all of the

windows have dark blinds so you get to cut out all the bright light when you need to.“Although you only need a car license to drive these the engineers have added a couple of great extras as well with traction control to help get out of slippery grass camping sites and “hillstart” that helps make it easier for the driver to take off up or down hill.”Pete also adds that there are a huge range of additions including solar and Sky TV so the options are endless when it comes to turning one of these into your home away from home.Best of all says Pete, with this camper you just pull up, swivel the seats around and put on the jug. No has-sle whatsoever and very, very comfortable and after all isn’t that what it’s all about? A Richmond real estate agent, couldn’t believe his luck in scoring some of Rod Stewart’s hot property.Brendon Houliston has al-ways been a Rod Stewart fan, the first album he ever purchased was Blondes Have More Fun, back in 1977. He had to wait quite a few years though to see the rocker in concert but it was well worth the wait. Along with his usual moves, Stewart also managed to show off some impressive footwork by kicking around 30 signed soccer balls into the crowd during the song, Stay With Me, and Brendon was lucky enough to catch one. “I was pretty wrapped,

I caught the ball on the full standing up and I gave Rod the thumbs up and he gave me the thumbs up back.”Brendon received several of-fers for the ball, for around $500 on the night but decid-ed that he is going to put the signed ball inside a glass case for display at his home. “You don’t often get some-thing like that from someone like him, it is a great bonus to take away with me as there are no opportunities to get autographs,” says Brendon. He says the 70 year old vet-eran can still rock a crowd.“He is prancing around the stage like a 20 year old, he has still got the moves and the voice,” says Brendon.

Keeping Nelson warm since 1956

With washing machines that range from 8kg-22kg, Liquid Laundromat is the perfect place towash and dry those bulky duvets that are impossible to dry on your line.

The magic solution for a warmer, dryer, quieter home. Imagine enjoying significantly reduced con-densation, more efficient heating, fewer UV rays to damage furniture and chattels, and a quieter home. It’s all possible with MagicSeal, which boasts all the benefits of double glazing at a fraction of the price.MagicSeal is a discreet second layer applied to ex-isting window frames using a magnetic sealing sys-tem. The MagicSeal secondary glazing is fabricated from premium quality, UV stabilised acrylic with the frame colour-matched to existing joinery (even timber finishes). It is fitted to the inside of the win-dow to trap a layer of still air between it and glass. This trapped airspace reduces the rate of convective heat loss, and acts as a barrier to reduce sound trans-mission. Heat losses through single glazed windows can be up to 48 percent. Magicseal acrylic panels can prevent the transfer of temperature up to five times better than glass. MagicSeal was invented and

developed in New Zealand and since it’s launch in 1987, it has become an international market leader in secondary glazing.

Tasman Holdings Nelson Ltd is offering a property opportunity that home buyers may not see again. After building eight brand new homes on a private street off Tahunanui’s Golf Road, just two remain to be scooped up for unbelievably good value. It is extremely rare to find new homes on the Nelson market under $400,000 and due to the rising cost of building; it’s a price that Tasman Holdings won’t be repeating. With winter on its way, these homes are brilliant for keeping out the cold and damp. They are constructed to the very latest building requirements including double glazing, ultra low energy LED lights and full insulation. Located in a sunny, friendly street and only minutes walk from the beach, now would be a good time to pick up

the phone, plus, being Registered Master Builders, Tasman Holdings bring a ten year guarantee to each home. For more information call either Lyn or Bryan today.

Those mornings when you wake up with a lust for life, hit the ground running and feel fantastic can be few and far between, and while berries have long been known as a superfood, getting the most out of what you put in can be hard with a busy lifestyle. Local berry sup-

pliers Sujon know their berries, and Kiwis are now enjoying the benefits of antioxidants found in blackcurrants through the Sujon Blackcurrant Powder. Packed with the minerals and nutrients essential to health, just a teaspoon of pow-der is the equivalent to ¾ of a cup of fresh berries and now that the powder is also available in the new, convenient capsule form it’s even easier to use. The 100% natural powder contains all the goodness of raw blackcurrants grown locally

in Nelson’s backyard and when taken daily becomes a powerful addition to a regular diet for those seeking improved health and immunity, freedom from disease, reduced in-flammation and muscle fatigue, or an edge in sports performance and recovery. Asthmatics, diabetics, and the elderly have all reported signs of improvement in not only their ail-ments, but vitality for everyday activ-ities, and positive effects stretch from feeling really good, to lowered blood pressure, improved circulation and arthritis and joint pain improvement.

For 59 years P & M Fireplaces have been keeping Nelsonians warm and, even after all that time, heating your home with a fire is still the most energy efficient and cost effective way to keep your family and home warm and dry. Owners, Murray and Bev Sinclair, are your one stop fire shop, the family business that can advise you on the right fire for your home. The original owners of P & M Fireplaces, Barbara Perkins and John Muddle, started the business in 1956 and have since moved on, however the original name remains well known today as a reliable and

trustworthy business which gets the job done right. Over the years P & M fireplaces have worked to keep lo-cal Nelsonians warm and look after our environment, overhauling the business and offering new, clean-air-compliant products to keep Nelson’s air fresh, while still keeping the cost of heating down for local families. Murray’s family take great pride in the business. His daughter and son both work in the business with him, learning from the best and offering great customer service - from advice and installation to servicing. P & M Fireplaces have so much historical experience that they can still get parts for your 1960s fire, now that’s truly standing the test of time. If you need to heat your home or service your fire call Murray and the team at P & M Fireplaces.

The elderly population are a very valuable sector of our community and Age Concern Nelson Tasman works hard to ensure they are supported and protected. The charitable organisation is based in Richmond and over the last few years has expanded to meet the growing need for support, advice, informa-tion and advocacy for the 65-plus popula-tion. Age Concern offers two key services: elder abuse and neglect prevention, which is a rising problem locally; and its Accred-ited Visitor Service. This much-needed and valued service links isolated and lonely older people with a volunteer visitor. The organisa-tion also coordinates a number of seminars and presentations to inform older people about issues such as driving safe, healthy

eating and cap-turing life stories and is involved with intergenera-tional projects to celebrate our el-derly. Coming up, Age Concern will be observing the worldwide Elder Abuse Awareness day on June 15, so keep and eye out for what’s happen-

ing. If you’d like more information, contact them on 544 7624.

Nelson Grey Power Association is once again a united front for the local population of 50s and over. The Nelson Grey Power Association is one of 76 branches lobbying in a variety of areas

to benefit people throughout New Zealand. The plus side of being part of Grey Power includes having your say on many of the topics affecting the over 50s, taking part in volunteer activities and taking advantage of the discounts supporting Nelson businesses offer. The Nelson association welcomes everyone over 50 who would like to be part of a lobby organisation that puts their needs and welfare first. If you’re thinking about studying, you don’t have to wait until 2016. Nelson Marlbor-ough Institute of Technology (NMIT) has numerous programmes that begin in July. Just one example is the Certificate in Coun-selling and Social Work - a six month, full

time programme. It is a chance to learn more about counselling and social work and see which branch of social sciences you would like to study further. Tutor Chrissy Turton recalls past students by name and also de-scribes the increasing requirement for de-

grees in counselling and social work today. “Many of our students on

this programme want to gain qualifications to develop their career, but are daunted by degree-level study. This programme gives them the skills and knowledge to confident-ly take their career further.” Check nmit.ac.nz to see the programme range available in July. Over 70% of NMIT’s programmes are available online, part time or as blend of

online, work-based and face to face delivery.

The Nelson Training Centre has been offering students a pathway to employment in the local hospitality indus-try for 27 years. Free courses, covering food preparation, restaurant and cafe skills, workplace experience and learn-ing skills, are complemented by the students own enthu-siasm to succeed, and results in them gaining a National Certificate in Hospitality Entry Skills Level 2 or NCEA Level 2-Vocational Pathways-Service Sector, although it is also important for the centre to ingrain in students an understand-ing of the best workplace attitudes. The centre operates its own cafe, which is open to the public every Thursday and Friday of the school term, offering students practical, real-life skills in customer service and cookery. When students have completed their course, Nelson Training Centre work to match their skills and attributes with a suitable employer. They are now tak-ing enrolments for 20th July and 12th October intakes. Contact them on 546 7636 to check if you are eligible for this free training.

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is a qualification which opens doors around the world. It is seen as the standard in English Language

Teaching and the minimum requirement for teaching jobs throughout the world. The course attracts a wide range of people, from recent university graduates to people looking for a career change. One recent CCEL graduate, Naomi Victor, reports “Do-ing the CELTA course was one of the best decisions I have

ever made. The CELTA was a demand-ing and challenging course. I chose to do it because people who have done it have remarked at how much confidence it leaves you with to teach a class on your own. CCEL tutors are really helpful and will happily go out of their way to assist you, but also allow you to be-come more independ-ent. The highlight of this course was the teamwork that our class had. Working with my classmates

and learning from each other made for a pleasant journey towards becoming a teacher!”

Harris Training Services Ltd offers real skills for real career opportunities. Owned and operated by Shane Harris, Harris Training offers a variety of train-ing and assessment options including a National Certificate in Agriculture (Gen-eral Skills) level 2. For a limited time,

those that met the enrolment criteria for the National Cer-tificate and are between the ages of 16 and 25 will pay zero fees (conditions apply). The certificate is the perfect oppor-tunity for those looking to learn practical skills that will en-hance their CV or gain employment in related industries; such as vineyards, market gardens, farming or with DOC. Harris Training are flexible in the programme that they can provide people, featuring units in hazard identification, basic spraying, fencing and the use of ATVs, tractors and chainsaws. To learn more about the course and how you can benefit from it, give Shane or Kylie a call today.

Fresh Choice Richmond has always been family focused. In fact, for many years now there’s only been one family name that’s gone hand-in-hand with the grocery industry in Richmond, and that is the Wat-sons. Not only has Fresh Choice been keeping fresh, quality food on local families tables, it has a history that goes all the way back to the ear-ly 1950s. Current owners Gary and Lisa Watson are proud to continue the legacy that Gary’s grandfather Ivan created over 40 years ago; de-veloping the stores design and tech-nology to make shopping easier and enjoyable for their customers. Besides aesthetic and technologi-cal upgrades, Fresh Choice offers customers a diverse range of food products including a diabetic sec-tion along with some of the largest ranges in wine, craft beer and gluten free foods in New Zealand. Their enormous section of local and im-ported wine, together with an im-pressive range of craft beer, guaran-tees you’ll find a solution to match any palate and keep guests happy at any occasion or social gathering. Gary and Lisa are always keen for suggestions on how they can grow the range. Fresh Choice Richmond is New Zealands only supermarket to roast their own coffee beans, so

you can select the variety you like and have them roasted fresh for that aromatic and flavourful cup of coffee at home. You can even buy a cup of coffee from the in-store ki-osk and pick up a few things while it’s being prepared. Fresh Choice have fitted some trundlers with cup holders so you can even get your caffeine fix while you shop. Being a local, Gary places a lot of importance on giving back to the community and supporting local suppliers is just the tip of the iceberg for Fresh Choice. Their sponsorship extends across a wide range of local groups including Tasman Wheel-ers, Richmond Bridge Club and the First Division Athletic Foot-ball team, plus, a community fund which has so far seen over $80,000 donated to various local groups or organisations. Gary and Lisa will continue to be the best in the grocery industry and look after their loyal customers with the same values and dedica-tion as when the business first start-ed. Come in and see for yourself the difference it makes shopping with a supermarket that’s focused on the important things such as quality and community, and enjoy a huge range of products to suit every re-quirement, budget and taste.

Berrylands, on the Appleby Highway, is owned by second generation market garden-ers, Pete and Steph Kristofski. They have just had an incredibly busy summer season and are delighted to announce that for the first time ever, they are staying open for the win-ter season. That means you will still have ac-cess to a wide range of the freshest fruit and vegetables, either grown by Pete himself or

sourced locally wherever possible. Winter hours will kick in from 18 May, when Berrylands will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week. While you are at Berrylands, be sure to try out a real fruit icecream or smoothie (also available dairy free). They also stock a selection of flower and vegetable plants, beautiful fuschias, delicious Elovi olive oil and an ex-tensive range of beautiful giftware from local craftsman Jude Raffill’s wood products – all of which would make great Mother’s Day presents. You can treat her to an icecream or a coffee while you are there!

Nelson Netball premier grade gets underway at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night with teams having a “warm up” of two short-ened games before the season proper begins the following week.On paper, Richmond Glass looks to be the team to beat as they set out to defend their title. Mikaela Powick is the only loss, as she is now at university while a note-worthy acquisition is Jess Bygate who has transferred from Jacks. Jess will combine to form a for-midable shooting duo with Nicky Rampton, while promising youngster Aimee Book will also bolster the offensive lineup. The remainder of Richmond’s roster is tried and true with a wealth of talent and experience across the court.Richmond have had the benefit of game time at the Super Club Competition in Christchurch in early March, where they faced teams who played with more speed, however they were disap-pointed with their outings in Nel-son the following week. Coach Kathleen Thornalley is looking forward to the eight-team competition, however, she does have to contend with the

unavailability of her three Nelson Sparks basketball players in the coming weeks.Runners-up from last year, Jacks OPD have lost the services of ace shooter Ani Waitai, although Welsh shooter Rebecca James has returned to the side. Jess Drum-mond has returned to Nelson from Christchurch and is likely to make her presence felt through the mid court.Jacks claimed the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament trophy last weekend, when they scraped through with a one goal win over Prices Pharmacy. Jacks will not be taking anyone lightly as any-one is a threat on any given day.Kalyssa Rasmussen will go from being the “baby” of Waimea Col-lege to their most experienced player all within the space of a year, as she is the only remaining player from 2014. There is a distinct legacy the girls in green and gold have to uphold and with the team stacked with talent, there is no doubt the new

squad will relish the opportuni-ties that playing in the top grade will present. With the increase to an eight-team competition, the Stoke Club will have two teams. As beaten

finalists in Premier 2, Stoke Sun City Panel and Paint will join club mates Stoke NBS who finished third in 2014. The NBS team has the nucleus of last year’s lineup and is quite ver-

satile while Stoke Sun City Panel and Paint have four players from last year who are making the step to the elite grade. Stoke Sun City face a baptism of fire when they meet Richmond in their first competition game as it is a seeded draw.Prices Pharmacy will also have two teams in the competition. Mandy Whiting is again calling the shots for the A team which has a similar look about it, with former players, Shar Lowe (in-jury) Christta Burrows (overseas) and Dayna Whiting (study), re-turning. Tom Alesena has the reins of Prices Black and has a fairly new team to work with Shevaun Col-lier and Kelly Jenkins are expect-ed to lead the offensive end. Mc-Kenzie Taikato is the experience in the mid court and Bex Watene will call the shots in the defensive third. With three returning from last year’s Premier 2 winning side, Nelson College for Girls are for-tunate in having leaders in each third with Abbey Frankin in the shooting, Charlotte Timms in the mid and Merekara McGuinnetty in the defensive third.

Hope Community Church

A week of great eventsThe Hope Community Church’s week long Hopefest starts next Saturday May 16 with the incredibly popular Big Share Fair. The church held their first Hopefest in 2009 and it was such a success that it has become a bien-nial event. And it’s not sur-prising that it is the most popular event at Hopefest with the church collect-ing hundreds of donated items to give away to the community. Senior Pastor Donald Irvine says Hopef-est is all about giving back to the community and the Big Share Fair provides a generous and fun format for doing just that. People are issued with free Hope Notes when they walk in the door of the church and can “spend” the money on the wide range of items at the fair. “We get most of the items donated by our church family but things come from near and far. The donated items extend to food, goods and services either available on the day or by vouchers that can be redeemed at a time to suit both parties. Vouchers can be for the services of a handyman, babysitter or even a meal cooked for your family. Everyone gives so generously so we can give back to the com-munity” Donald says. The Big Share Fair will be held at the church 114 Ranzau Rd West

in Hope on Saturday May 16 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Hopefest’s theme of giving to the community doesn’t stop there with the church holding a free Charity Quiz night on Friday May 22. In-

stead of keeping the prizes, the winning teams will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Mar-lborough Hospice, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Heli-copter, St John, Big Broth-ers Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services.

The quiz starts at 7:30pm.Hopefest also includes three free seminars from Tuesday May 19 to Thursday May 21 (see advertisement opposite for details) The seminars start at 7:30pm with no booking re-quired. Hopefest concludes with a free con-cert featuring Elvis impersonator Mark Borg from Australia along with local supporting artists on Saturday May 23 starting at 7:30pm followed by a Sunday morning church ser-vice on May 24 at 10am with guest speaker Jim Hickey. For more information on Hopefest go to the website www.hopefest.co.nz or phone the church on 544 6628.

Richmond striker ‘will score goals’Ben Harris is hoping his stint with Richmond Athletic will be a give-and-take relationship. He wants to give a few tips to the club’s youngsters and take plenty of goals.Either way it’s a good scenario for FreshChoice Richmond, which will welcome the young English striker into its first team for the first time this Saturday.Ben, 24, has watched a couple of Richmond games since arriving to Nelson last month and likes what he sees. “They give it 100 per cent. The skill level may not be what I’m used to but they give it their all and that’s all you can ask.”Ben says he should score a bucket-load of goals during his two month stay with the club.“I will bully defences. I should be scoring three goals a game but I won’t say that. I’d be happy with a goal a game.”That may look arrogant in print but Ben says he doesn’t mean it that way. “I’m a confident player, defi-nitely not an arrogant player.”Ben plays in the Isthmian League in England, three tiers down from the professional League Two.He was injured half way through

last season and was told to rest. As a self-employed builder that meant time off work as well. So he decided to visit his mother in Auckland. A connection between Richmond’s first division coach Matt Campbell and Ben’s UK manager tempted Ben south and he says he’s already enjoying Nelson. “It’s beautiful, and this is coming into winter? I could get used to this.”Matt says while Ben will provide a boost to the fortunes of the first team on the pitch, he’s hoping for positive effects off it too. “Ben knows his role here and it’s just as much about working with the players and passing on some of his knowledge. The league he comes from is a really high standard so he has a lot that he can pass on.”Ben says he’ll return to the UK around July and try to break into the Conference Premier grade. On the field, Richmond sit sixth in the Nelson Bays Football first divi-sion and will host Wakefield at Ju-bilee Park this Saturday from 3pm.

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys are expecting another tough forward encounter when they play Waitohi in their Tasman Trophy club rugby game at Endeavour Park in Picton this Saturday.Waimea Old Boys prevailed 30-17 in a hard-fought battle against Blen-heim team Moutere in last Satur-day’s game and coach Mark Milne is expecting more of the same when they travel to Picton. Waitohi has a big, physical pack like Moutere and

Mark says it will be important to gain parity up front.“Waitohi have a big pack and they are going to be even harder at home. They have lost some player from last year but they’ll still be a good side.”Mark says he was pleased with last week’s performance against Moutere and will be looking for his players to continue with that improvement. Waimea led 15-7 at half time against Moutere, before centre Luca Roden and substitute winger Talor Simp-son-Brown scored in the second to seal the win.

“I was really pleased with our struc-ture against Moutere - it was proba-bly the best we’ve played all year. We created a lot of opportunities and al-though we didn’t finish off that well, that was partly because they defend-ed really well.”Mark says they have been focusing on the ruck and clean-out at training this week, as well as “stepping up our defence”. The game kicks-off at 3pm.Waimea Old Boys B beat Tapawera 49-3 in their division two game last Saturday.

JAB UNDER WAY: Waimea Old Boys junior players took to the field on Saturday when the club’s 19 JAB teams played their season-openers at grounds around the re-gion. Waimea has 270 junior players in teams from un-der-six to under-13, making it the biggest JAB club in Nelson. JAB president Jeremy Salton says the teams are well supported by enthusiastic parents with many of the coaches staying with a side right through the grades. All of Waimea Old Boys JAB players will be at Jubilee Park on June 27 when Waimea has its Club Day. Pictured is Waimea Under-6 Red’s Reuben Sanders playing against Nelson at Neale Park on Saturday.
