ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERSSave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

septi-cure is:

› Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage

› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

Breakthrough Product Developed for your Septic Tank

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years.

He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Mental wellness initiatives

The CEO of New Zealand Young Farmers is applauding the recently announced rural mental wellness initiatives from Government and says it will give much needed support to younger members of the farming community who have also been hit by the dairy downturn.

Terr y Copeland says the announcement of the development of a framework to improve mental health and addiction outcomes in rural New Zealand and the continuation of the emergency response to support rural mental health was vital, particularly for those younger sharemilkers and contract milkers.

“We know it’s tough out there at the moment and we know some of our members are suffering significant financial stress. The government’s Rural Mental Wellness Initiatives is recognition that we need to offer a wide range of support and ensure that all arms of the primary sector are catered for.” Mr Copeland said while there had been

comprehensive support offered to the farming community, it was important to not forget about the younger members of the industry.

“We need to look out for these younger members as they are our future. For many this will be the first time they have faced true hardship so it’s vital we ensure these initiatives reach them.”

As a member of Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand, New Zealand Young Farmers is part of a united voice across multiple rural sector organisations with the aim of providing solutions and influencing policy affecting the health and wellbeing of rural communities.

Finding a new path For two Waikato women, the Pathway Programme organised by Dairy Women’s Network, has opened up many new opportunities and boosted their confidence.

The course is designed to empower rural women to become leaders in their communities and Alison Ferris and Jodie Goudswaard are walking examples of this.

Alison Ferris is mum to Lucy, 7, Emily, 5, and Molly, 3 and lives on a dairy farm at Rangitoto, just out of Te Kuiti.

Two years ago Alison was at a crossroads and the former school teacher began to wonder about her career path.

Then a newsletter arrived from the Dairy Women’s Network, advertising its Pathway Programme — a six-month leadership and coaching course for rural women.

“I thought it looked really good for where I was at and the stage of my life,” she said.

Developed by the Agri-Women’s Development Trust and the Dairy Women’s Network, the Pathways Programme was designed to help women lead change within their own businesses and communities.

It taught leadership, influence and communication skills, and encouraged women to identify their own skills and strengths.

The programme, which was funded by DairyNZ and Ministry for Primary Industries, included two two-day leadership workshops held six months apart, with three coaching and mentoring sessions in between. Nearly 30 women have completed the programme over the past two years. “I think there are a lot

of us who have had a career in different fields and then married a dairy farmer, had a family, and looked up and thought, ‘what now?’,” said Alison.

The programme also inspired Te Kauwhata woman and mother of three, Jodie Goudswaard, to make a difference and lead in change.

In November 2014 she was one of the first women to begin the Pathways Programme, a six-month leadership and coaching course for rural women.

Jodie said doing the Pathways programme made a difference to her and her community.

“I became a lot more aware of my leadership strengths, as well as the areas I needed to work on,” said Jodie, who is mother to Loki, 8, Alise, 6 and Finn, 5. Jodie and her husband Carl

share-milk 450 cows on a farm at Rotongaro, near Te Kauwhata and she juggles motherhood and farming with leadership roles in her local community and the dairy industry.

Jodie believes women can lead change in the agricultural sector by “backing themselves,” she says.

“I want to tell rural women that they can do it, and to have the confidence to get out there and give things a go, and to take on those leadership roles.”

Alison Ferris and Jodie Goudswaard have made the most of the opportunities offered with the Dairy Women’s Network Pathway Programme

FOR CHARITYRAISING STOCK

by Ann Morgan

Raising an animal to donate to charity has become a way for farmers to be involved in helping to support people with

intellectual disabilities in New Zealand.

The idea behind the IHC Calf and Rural Scheme was dreamed up by Norm Cashmore, a Taranaki

farmer who offered a pair of gumboots to every farmer donating a calf to the Taranaki branch of IHC more than 30-years-ago.

“Mick Murphy, a farmer in Marlborough visited Norm to see how his idea worked and was so impressed he decided it could be implemented nationally. He convinced the members of the fundraising committee of the New

Zealand Council of IHC to give the idea a go,” said scheme coordinator Lynda Young-Kennedy.

“Mick was involved in the Marlborough branch of IHC and was given permission for a pilot project in 1982 and by the end of the trial, 770 calves donated by farmers had raised $110,000 and the scheme was launched nationwide the following year.”

A great believer in the personal face-to-face approach he set up a network of canvassers to visit farmers and ask

them to sign up to donate a calf. “Mick visited stock agents who agreed to auction the animals free of charge and he met with transport companies who offered to provide the transport at no cost. He then realised that if he wanted

to go to all the branches, he needed money,” said Ms Young-Kennedy.

“First on his list was gumboot manufacturer Skellerup. They gave him $2,500 and stock agents Dalgety came up with another $2,500 so IHC could

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2016 5

advertise the scheme nationwide. In 1987 Wrightson, now PGG Wrightson, became the official primary sponsor of the scheme.”

Often IHC and its service arm IDEA Services is the only organisation providing crucial support for people with an intellectual disability and their families in an area.

Brian and Penny Coutts from the Hikurangi area have been donating and canvassing for the scheme for 27 years.

“We originally became involved because the local area coordinator Noel Reed asked us if we would participate,” said Mrs Coutts.

“It is a very good opportunity to help people locally. When we first joined everything was done with a clipboard and sheets of paper. Technology has certainly made things a lot more sophisticated and easier.

“We find farmers are very generous and supportive around the area. Many have been onboard with us for 27 years too. The IHC are very positive to work alongside and they are very grateful for the help they receive.

“Contributors like the fact that the money they raise stays in the local area and helps families close to home. It is nice to be a part of someone else’s life nearby.

“Farmers can be very proud that they are a part of one of the

biggest fundraising initiatives for the organisation. “As canvassers we see the satisfaction people get from raising their calves for the IHC — it is very encouraging. Every donation makes a big difference, and it is helping those who have quite a lot of challenges in life.”

Farmers can put an animal through a sale at anytime. They inform the PGG Wrightson person that it is an IHC donation and the funds are forwarded to them.

The scheme has since expanded to include other kinds of stock. Money raised helps to pay for services that are not funded by the government. This includes a team of advocates who will go into bat whenever people’s rights are being ignored, and a whole range of programmes designed to include people with disabilities in the lives of their communities.

“It is with thanks to Norm Cashmore’s idea that dairy farmers have been doing their bit for a long time and now the entire rural sector has the opportunity to get involved as the programme is open to include other livestock,” said Ms Young-Kennedy.

“Farmers have since raised more than $30 million for IHC’s work in rural communities around the country, and the scheme generates more than $1 million annually.”

Walking around the calf sales is an experience IHC service users enjoy participating in

Master of the hunt, Grant McGregor, has been involved with hunts since he was nine-

years-old and the thrill of riding and working with the hounds has never worn thin.

Grant grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Northland where his father introduced him to the sport.

The family later shifted to the Waikato where Grant became involved in the Waikato Hunt Inc in 1983. In 1987 he purchased a dry stock farm from his parents and has lived there ever since. He and his wife Di have passed on their passion for the hunt to their two children, Charlotte and Stewart.

“Both are very passionate about riding and hunting. They started at a

young age and have been involved with horses since they were old enough to sit on them,” he says.

The sport is well established in New Zealand. There are 28 packs of harrier hounds used by hunts all over the country and all are descendants of the first hounds brought into the country.

“It is one of the oldest sports in New Zealand. The first hounds arrived here just under 150 years ago and it has progressed and expanded from there,” Grant says.

Harrier hounds are purpose built and are a closed breed, meaning they aren’t available to the public.

Grant says it is their size and their sense of smell that makes them ideal for hunting hare.

Far from the traditional images of gentry chasing fox in the English countryside, Waikato Hunt is a cross-section of society with members from many di erent backgrounds, and they recently celebrated their 125th season.

Master of the Waikato Hunt Grant McGregor says hunting is not elitist and everyone can join in

“Border security are just starting to use harrier hounds in their programme. They are bigger than Beagles and are able to do more which is quite a feather in their cap.”

Hunt season in New Zealand runs from mid-March to August although the Waikato branch tend to hunt from mid-March to early July, partly due to weather and because farmers are starting to calve and lamb.

“Our hunt is one of the biggest fields. We sometimes have somewhere between 80 and 90 people hunting on average over the season. We hunt up to about 35 times a year, twice a week, and run somewhere around 13–15 couples of hounds.”

For Grant, the actual hunting aspect falls by the wayside, and he mostly appreciates being able to get out into the countryside.

“We hunt from the west coast right through to the Kaimai Ranges so we get to look around a lot of different farms and see the beauty of the country.

“I enjoy watching the hounds work and learning about how they go about their job.”

There is also a strong social aspect to the club.

“We have a large demographic of riders from about eight years old to eighty and they come from all walks of life. It’s not just the farming community that are involved. We have many business people and small block

owners, and all just enjoy riding to the noise of the hounds.

“It’s a very family orientated sport and it is rewarding watching the children progress to being confident riders. A lot of them have become incredibly good friends as time has gone by.”

Grant says New Zealanders’ perception of hunts are different to those in the United Kingdom.

“Here it is not an elitist sport. Anyone can come along if they can ride.”

“We have profiled what it was like many years ago for the timber millers and their

families working in the area and this helps others gain an understanding of New Zealand’s past,” said Department of Conservation ranger, Erana Stevens.

National and international tourists visit the area which utilises historic bush tramways, old bulldozer and haul roads, and a newly constructed track.

John Gaukrodger worked in Pureora Forest as a timber cruiser and became the operation controller before forestry came to an end.

“I was the last officer in charge of Pureora Forest Park when the NZ Forest Service came to an end in 1987. I had done time in the forest in my training

days in 1967. This entailed working with the team measuring and putting together timber sales for the native logging operations,” said John.

“The timber was going to the local saw mills at Pureora. Those mills came to an end after the tree climbing protest stopped the process of native logging. In 1981 we were winding down and completing the last of the logging and I did the last timber cruise ever undertaken at the Pureora Forest Park, it was literally the end of the era.

“It was inevitable. Economics alone would end it as native timber was becoming a specialist wood, and pinus radiata had taken over as a sustainable resource because you can plant it, grow it, mill it and then plant more quickly.

BY ANN MORGAN

The history of the timber industry in the Pureora area, where

logging native wood was once acceptable, is highlighted

in the Pureora Timber Trail where visitors can learn what life

in the forest was like in the past.

“The closing of the milling helped with a big conservation issue regarding the native kokako bird which was nearly extinct. Scientists and DOC field staff were involved in projects that re-established significant populations of the bird in the King Country. The same people who worked in the forest service moved to DOC and the result of the kokako initiative was extremely successful.”

Some of the kokako were translocated to a wide variety of locations throughout New Zealand and have successfully adapted.

John says Pureora was a superb community and a magnificent place to live and work.

“It was a village of 170 people with a shop and a post office. It was the backbone of significant rural communities of farming and forestry.”

Coming to the end of his working career in 2010 the cycle-way project began and offered rural employment opportunities.

“I was asked to manage the project and found it to be a great option to see out my working career.

“You will not find an area anywhere in New Zealand more easy to access with a greater diversity of native wildlife. The native forest is absolutely magnificent. You won’t find taller or bigger diameter totara anywhere in the country.

“Native falcon, kaka, kakariki (the little green parrots), tui and bellbirds all reside here. The dawn chorus is deafening.

“There are short and long tail bats and the big bridges across the gorges and ridges on the timber trail have whio blue duck populations.”

Visitors pass through magnificent podocarp forests of matai, rimu,

totara, miro, and kahikatea trees, as well as some exotic forestry and open vegetation.

This offers extensive views of the surrounding landscape and showcases the historic Ongarue Spiral which is a marvel of engineering.

John says the spiral allowed the logging tram to climb a short steep section quickly. There was a team of people involved directly with the Timber Trail.

“The Omarunui tram first crossed the boundary of Pureora Forest in 1908

when the native logging commenced and we started the construction work of the trail 100 years later in 2008 following the main trunk line. We were dedicated to making the project a success.

“It is absolutely a positive for the region. The primary service from my part was to get people in it to see the natural values that exist. The Maori history is

fantastic and very significant. There are more than 100 interpretation panels telling the history of Pureora.

“The whole purpose was to provide employment opportunities and it has done that. A significant lodge is going to be built at the midpoint at Piri Piri — this will add to the experience and employ more people and that is exciting.”

Health & Happinessby John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

A D V E RT O R I A L

Heading South on the Road Show this week I met up and stayed with our Sales Rep Murray Nichol and his wife Carolyn in Waimate. Lovely people!

During conversation about the growing trend towards organic production, Murray produced a copy of the Ashburton Guardian, a farming journal dated May 2016. It was full on about the move to organics and all the bene ts that can be gained using

a natural certi ed system that maintains production, increases the nutrient value in food, is completely sustainable and ecologically friendly.

The guardian quotes that the big movers and shakers of this demand for safe, certi ed, nutritiously dense food are the Y Generation. This group’s common birth range is 1982–2000. According to the paper the Generation Y consumers are waiting in the wings to hold power and shape future markets. Conventional producers should be very concerned about their future direction as the chemical age passes its use-by-date.

Caitlin Bingham is one of those future voices. Young, hard working and environmentally conscious, this 21-year-old was raised on meat and three veg. She has moved away in favour of what she sees as clean living. Caitlin only

buys fresh produce labelled organic, however she is fully aware of products that claim to be organic, but are not!

These false claims of products being organic has impacted on the growth of the organic movement. However, today’s consumers are fully aware of organic certi ed logos which guide them towards genuine products.

During our Road Show this year we are pushing for the need to move away from chemical production based around the new consumer demand for safe certi ed, nutritiously dense food produced in an animal friendly, sustainable and eco-friendly manner, this is the new demand and it’s increasing globally.

The chemical age is well past its use by date as antibiotics, drenches, herbicides and the list of rescue remedies fail to do their job creating more problems as pests, diseases and weeds have become immune to chemicals.

The underlying problem is synthetic, soluble nutrients and the chemical fertiliser’s nutrient requirement of basically only providing arti cial nitrogen and superphosphate to plants leaving all the other essential elements out of the equation.

All of life is dependent upon mineral for health and vitality, today, it is lacking in most foods and this is heavily endorsed with the huge lift in vet clinics, medical centres, alternative centres and alternative medicines, as people are clamouring to try to stay healthy.

Most of the health minerals produced today are in a synthetic form, and in a lot of cases these tablets are not recognised at the cellular level, passing

straight through the body; con rmed by a portaloo operator, hosing out the loos after a venue and nding piles of mineral tablets still with the name of the mineral embossed on the tablet. No recognition by the cells!

There are multi-mineral products out there in the market and Agrissentials is leading the eld in multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, designed to bring health and vitality back to soils. The microbial life are responsible for converting the natural minerals in our fertilisers to a plant available form, the ultimate form for plant uptake, energy and growth.

Two years ago, I began taking my Rok dust minerals in a capsule form, knowing that the microbes in my gut would convert the minerals to a form that the cells would recognise and uptake the minerals.

At that stage my waist size was 98cm, 24 months later I’m 88cm. I am not on a diet, I eat whatever I want and the most amazing thing is that I never feel hungry, I’m getting all the minerals I need and apart from a dickey hip, I feel great and mentally very strong.

SPOTLIGHT ON TAUPO

Looking to the futureB U S I N E S S P R O F I L E

As Cheal settles into its 76th year of operation, they have seen a few Taupo winters — winters with dirt roads and a few buildings to winters booming with tourism and its ever-popular Winter Fest.

Initially a small surveying practice back in 1940, Cheal now includes civil, structural and geotechnical engineering, resource management planning and laser scanning surveys in its offer of services. They have an in depth understanding of the land, its behaviours and the complex processes needing to be navigated in order for their clients to realise their goals.

Business manager Rebecca Hawke says the company is proud to be part of the growth of the town over the years and they are excited to see new subdivisions and more people making the choice to both invest in and relocate to Taupo.

“We have been here since it was a small settlement with dirt roads to a one of the top tourism destinations in New Zealand with a vibrant commerce and industry sector,” she says.

“We are a community-minded organisation. All our shareholders work in the business so we have a vested interest in both the business and our clients’ projects being successful.”

The Cheal team is skilled with a passion for the projects they work on and the history they play a part in creating. Excellence in delivery to their clients is inherent in their culture. “We place a huge amount of value on the

fact that our clients keep coming back to us. We are happy to do work from a very small land development to a multi-million dollar project.”

With a network of six of ces throughout the Central North Island, Waikato, Ruapehu, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay regions, Cheal works on a wide range of projects, from small 2-lot residential subdivisions through to large scale developments in the urban, rural, environmental and industrial sectors.

Managing winter feedLearning how to effectively manage pasture could be the difference between an easy winter and a hard one.

A surplus autumn pasture is generally the best feed and rationing it can be achieved by grazing small paddocks or strip grazing behind electric fences.

To do this, forward planning is a must, and over time experience is the best teacher when it comes to knowing how much pasture to feed the different livestock and when to use supplements.

Advice is often given in kilograms of dry matter per hectare and sometimes fertiliser needs to be strategically applied when pasture quality is low.

It is important to remember different types of livestock have different requirements at different stages in their lives and throughout the year.

For example in winter stock may require extra concentrated feed as well as pasture to ensure they get all the energy and protein they need.

Animals that are pregnant, lactating, or in poor body condition may also need supplements.

Animals with faulty front teeth will be at a disadvantage when it comes to feeding on short pastures.

Species like horses and sheep can generally graze close to the ground, but goats and cattle require longer pasture. These types of livestock may need supplementary hay and concentrates to see them through the winter.

For cattle to graze effectively, pasture must be at least several centimetres long. If in doubt, observe your animals for a while. If ruminants like sheep, cattle and goats are lying down chewing their cud they are content.

If horses and ponies are idle this means they are most likely not hungry and don’t feel the need to graze.

Students wininnovator award

Proving that age is no barrier to innovation agribusiness students from St Paul’s Collegiate have gone up against university students from throughout the country, to win this year’s Young Innovators award at Fieldays

Ben McColgan, Hugh Jackson, Connor Gordon and Angus Kelly’s winning product Crankworks is a post hole borer holder that attaches to a trailer or motorbike to assist a single person with bore hole production by eliminating the twisting movement.

The four young innovators developed the product in one of their Agribusiness classes at St Paul’s.

The students all agreed it was a good experience and a great opportunity.

“We seemed to gather quite a bit of interest at our site. It might have been because there were four young people there with an interesting concept. We had quite a lot of people giving us advice and saying how we could make it better, which was pretty cool because we said thank you and told them that we would take that on board and actually make it better,” says Connor Gordon.

“It was pretty good winning over some of the universities and people who were older than us,” said Ben McColgan. Student Hugh Jackson says it was

awesome to win the award. “We haven’t had a group discussion yet about what we will do with the $1,000 prize.”

Angus Kelly agreed saying it was a nice feeling to win — “we weren’t really expecting it.”

The Agribusiness programme was created by St Paul’s, DairyNZ and Beef + LambNZ to inspire secondary school students to consider a career in the primary industries by opening their eyes to the world of opportunities in the sector that go beyond the farm gate.

There were 70 entrants in the 2016 Fieldays Innovation Awards

Do we have Laminitis?I have just been running some trimming workshops on the West Coast and found myself regularly confronted with the continuing acceptance that physical force is the main contributor to lameness in New Zealand, together with a reluctance to accept that Laminitis is a very real problem here. So, do we have laminitis in New Zealand? There are people who believe we don’t because ‘it has not been proven’.

What difference would it make? Why would we care? I believe that if you really want to solve a problem, you need to know what causes the problem. How else are you going to solve it? I believe that if we try to keep lameness under control by solving all the physical issues then we are only solving the symptoms. So, what is my point? When I talk about laminitis I am talking about an unhealthy live tissue in the hoof caused by internal imbalances.

The symptoms of an unhealthy live tissue are haemorrhaging, holes and cracks, deformed hoofs and just about anything else we see wrong with the hoof. Most people mistakenly assume that all those symptoms are caused by standing on stones and other ‘sharp objects’, or ‘pushing cows too hard’ and therefore adding too much pressure on the hooves. The problem here is that this has never been proven to be the case.

However, the fact that those symptoms are mainly a domestic cow issue and not so much a wild cow issue shows that there has to be more going on than just physical forces. I would argue that a cow in the wild is a lot harder on her hooves than a domestic cow on our farms.

The fact that those symptoms are more cow-related than hoof-related raises questions. Why are those symptoms symmetrical on both feet on most cows? That doesn’t make sense if it was caused by physical force. Also, why do we see haemorrhaging up on the dorsal wall? How could physical force be the cause of that? Why do we see the outer claw deformed much more often than the inner claw? Why do most cows go lame on the rear hooves

if they only carry 40% of the weight? Why do we see mostly the outside claws displaying these symptoms if this is supposed to be the claw with the most protection? Why does it have a positive effect on the cow when we take some of that protection away by trimming? Think about it. How do you explain all those things from a physical force point of view?

Research overseas has shown that diet and stress have a major impact on lameness. I know we are in New Zealand, but if it looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, it waddles like a duck and it flies like a duck it probably is a duck. We need to understand this properly because it will affect our management style — all of a sudden, controlled starvation becomes a problem rather than a tool, only one water trough may not be enough, and having cows out of the paddock for long periods of time becomes an issue, and the list goes on. I do not understand why people

deny that laminitis is in dairy cows in New Zealand.

I do not see any reason for that especially when the evidence so clearly points in that direction. Just for the record, I believe that just about every cow in New Zealand has some degree

of laminitis in their feet. In the majority of cases it is not severe enough to be a problem for the cow. However, I believe it is by far the biggest cause of lameness on our dairy farms. Let me know your thoughts, email me at [email protected].

The plight of the dairy industry

Some 800 dairy farmers attended the DairyNZ conference at Mystery Creek to hear Bill English, and other keynote speakers say the government was extremely grateful and thanked dairy farmers for their valuable contribution to the NZ economy.

Mr English also recognised that more than 85% of NZ dairy farmers’ businesses were at risk due to the current milk price crisis and that some farmers will not make it through.

A number of sharemilkers are also abandoning their sharemilking careers due to banks foreclosing on them. The Farmers of New Zealand banking team have been working very hard with our sharemilker members dealing with their banks.

Sharemilkers make a very valuable contribution to the dairy industry. The operating environment over the last 30 years has been characterised by the large payout fluctuations. The price of land has increased significantly.

The NZ dairy industry has a history of innovative owner operators progressing through from wages to sharemilking,

to farm ownership. The path to farm ownership taken by these farmers has become increasingly difficult to follow with increasing herd size and increasing land values. Many state that achieving farm ownership without family assistance is no longer possible.

Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings told the DairyNZ conference that Fonterra had to start telling the world the New Zealand story. He said the #431AM promotion that Fonterra has initiated, featuring Richie McCaw, would be a major marketing plank in moving forward to promote Fonterra to the world.

I believe Theo’s presentation to the conference demonstrated that he is completely out of touch with what is happening on the farm. He seemed to be detached from the audience. I doubt that Richie McCaw, apart from a bit of

PR work, is going to be able to change the economic plight of the industry one iota. The quality of other speakers was excellent. Rabobank’s Tim Hunt spelt out very clearly what the dairy industry worldwide is facing.

The fact is the world has too much milk and it could take a significant amount of time before farmer returns recover. On a wider scale, the European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, is to meet Russian President Putin in an endeavour to settle the current European trade embargo against Russia. The European farmers, particularly the French, are

now demonstrating and burning their agriculture products because they do not support the current trade bans against Russia.

In the United States many Americans are protesting against the current political establishment. While the world is awash with milk and other dairy products, there is a worldwide food crisis affecting more than three billion people, half the world’s population, who are short of food. What is missing is the political will on the part of world governments, industry and finance, to support the alternatives that are needed to correct it.

BEFORE | AFTERTHE SECRET FOR MAKING YOUR FARM SAFER WITHOUT THE STRESSRight now, better than ever before, the timing’s perfect to take a bit of confusion and chaos and turn it into something positive!

The recent introduction of the new Health & Safety at Work Act gives you the perfect opportunity to start protecting yourself and your staff against harm in the workplace when you thought you never could.

Everyone has a role to play and it will be good for business.

It’s a chance to look forward rather than back, and we reckon there’s nothing to fear or be overwhelmed by. What hasn’t happened in the past no longer matters.

With over 30 years as contractors and owners in the farm and forestry sector, Linksafe understands where you are coming from and speaks a language you can understand.

It’s a change of attitude and a new way of thinking and we can get you started and support you as much or as little as you want along the way.

Committed to safetyB U S I N E S S P R O F I L E

As he lay on the forest oor for almost an hour after a forestry accident a lot went through Danny McBride’s mind and a life changing commitment to make a difference was made.

“I pretty much knew straight away it was a spinal cord injury and there was not a lot I could do about it,” he explained.

“I thought about my two young kids and my partner at home and made a vow to myself then that I wanted to carry on and move forward. There was fear and pain because you still haven’t been found yet but in that hour of waiting there was also basically time to grieve and come to grips with the situation.”

The day was January 27, 1999 and although it had started the same as many others had done during his six years in a commercial logging crew, it unfortunately ended on a very different note when he was struck from behind by a random rotten spar while felling trees and fracturing his T12 vertebrae.

Ironically, since the accident Danny hasn’t had time to sit down much. He’s represented New Zealand in wheelchair basketball and at the 2012 Paralympics as a single sculler in adaptive rowing. He has also become one of the country’s leading innovators in the eld of Health and Safety.

“After the accident I really wanted to make a difference and do everything I could to ensure what happened to me didn’t happen to anyone else. I have been involved in investigating too many serious harm accidents and fatalities over

the years and have seen the damage that it does to families and the toll it takes on those involved,” he said.

Danny has established his business, Linksafe, to meet the needs of contractors and small business owners throughout the country in their quest to get simple, practical, Health and Safety Management solutions, from both a knowledge and experience point of view. With the recent introduction of the new Health and Safety at Work Act it’s a great opportunity to get started.

“Although we are quali ed and formally registered, we approach things from a grass roots level, and make it understandable and reasonably enjoyable. Myself, and the other owner of Linksafe both come from a working background in the primary sectors and being involved with staff and clients on that same level is what drives us.

“If we can help keep people safe and get them home to their families each day then we can ask for nothing more than that.”

When John Hodgson purchased the 1,800-hectare farm from his father Jeff in 1958

thoughts of farming organically were the last thing on his mind. In fact it wasn’t until the early 1980s when John had a bad reaction to chemicals used in docking lambs that a decision to go organic was made.

“Initially it started when I became ill from a chemical poisoning when we were docking lambs and spraying the tails for fly strike. I was ill for a day or two, from inhaling spray drift and that

initiated our decision. Prior to that John says his late wife Marcella had been trying to instigate a change to organic for a number of years.

“She was a definite believer in organics and always in those early days questioned our farming practices.”

Their six children all grew up on the traditional Angus beef and Te Akatea Romney stud farm called White Rata, which is the European translation of Te Akatea where the farm is located and also the name of the native tree commonly found in the region.

the Raglan food fest recently and five of the Hodgson siblings along with two brother-in-laws, two sister-in-laws and a nephew were there to help as well as John and his partner Suse. “It was great to see the help from everyone — we literally had the whole family working and supporting each other and everyone was just paid in love and burger patties,” says Rosalie

Since the launch in November last year things have really taken off. Their organic meat is now being sold at a number of cafes and restaurants and farm shops in the region as well as being available at the Hamilton Farmers market. Rosalie says the meat basically sells itself because it tastes so good.

“We’ve had such great feedback. We get lots of regulars and heaps of people saying we haven’t tasted meat like this in so long.”

The meat they sell is born, raised and finished on the farm and all products sold are preservative, nitrate and gluten-free.

“We provide Angus beef burgers to a couple of cafes — there’s no filler they’re just 100 per cent Angus beef and people love the flavour. It just shows you don’t need all those additives for it to taste amazing.”

Rosalie only recently returned to the farm after a few years away studying a Bachelor of Management at Waikato University majoring in marketing followed by a few years working here and overseas as a business analyst.

“The reason why I wanted to return and do this is because I’ve seen the documentaries about the horror meat industries and I suppose I know how

different it is on our farm. Just knowing that we really do make an effort to do the right thing is why I wanted to return,” says Rosalie.

Daniel who has a degree in commerce from Lincoln University and a graduate diploma in applied science has been farm manager for the past six years. He also happens to be a very eligible bachelor according to his sister. He says his focus isn’t only on farming organically but farming ethically as well and that’s why the family have decided to place 700 acres of the farm’s native forest into a covenant.

“It just means now it will be there for the future.”

The family also plant poplars and do riparian planting each year as a way of minimising their impact on the soils and waterways, while also making the farm a more healthy and pleasant environment for the sheep and cattle.

“It’s about improving water quality downstream and to improve the farm environment. I guess you could say we’re greenies at heart — we’re a bit green in the blood — we enjoy seeing the bush regenerating and improving over time and just seeing the native bird life,” says Daniel.

At the end of the day the family all agree the decision to go organic was the right one.

“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and I do think that while financially it hasn’t been as worthwhile as conventional, I just feel on principle that what we’ve achieved and what we’ve tried to achieve as a family is better for the customer in general and good for the environment,” says John Hobson.

Optimised for successby Andy Bryenton

It’s tough at the top. When, like agricultural machinery giant Case IH, you have a well respected product on your hands, but also see the need to press forward with innovation and gains in efficiency, it can be daunting to turn the page on history.

When that product is the Case Puma series of tractors, it’s an even more challenging prospect, as this marque has achieved a lot for the Case IH brand. But there is a call in the market for greater fuel economy, and governments, especially in Europe, demand stricter emission standards. At the same time,

The Case IH Optum series are ready to roll out, offering new levels of efficiency to contractors and farmers

Case IH have developed better and more intuitive operator controls — and they’ve come up with a new design aesthetic too, giving the Optum a fresh new look.

Enter the Optum series of tractors, sitting high in the power range but offering the versatility of application usually associated with smaller machines.

The Optum range consists of two models with compact 6.7 litre NEF engines, with 270 or 300hp at a rated speed of 2,100rpm and a maximum power of 313hp at 1,800rpm for the larger of the two models.

Designed from the ground up to be nimble and easily managed despite their powerful output, the Optum tractors feature the same front suspension and steering components as the Case Magnum, but also boast antilock brakes, a finely tuned continuously variable transmission, and even an inboard tyre pressure monitoring system.

A four speed front rear PTO and two speed front PTO both come with an economy mode for even further fuel savings.

“Modern, productive farming and contracting businesses in Europe are amongst the most demanding customers worldwide. One reason is

that cropping is more intensive and yields are higher than in most other regions, whilst we ather conditions often limit available time windows for field work. Handling any given task with maximum performance, efficiency and reliability is therefore what the Optum CVX was designed and built for,” says Andreas Klauser, Case IH President.

And he’d definitely be one to know. The Case IH range now spans 220 distinct models, with the Optum series directed squarely at the large livestock operation or agricultural contractor.

Both machines in the range have come from extensive consultation with farmers, and should prove a mighty asset in the field.

Battle lines are drawnThere’s no feud like a family feud. Just one comment at Christmas dinner about Auntie Irene’s new haircut and it’s more than the turkey which gets carved. It’s the same in the rivalry between in-house brands under one overarching automotive umbrella.

Look at the implosion of British Leyland — who famously were not on speaking terms between factories, leading to the disastrous Triumph Stag V6 debacle — or the tussle for control within the monster which is VW, Audi, Porsche and bad-boy-brother Lamborghini. Competition is a good thing and competitors spur us on to greatness. But when they are technical bedfellows — well, the comparisons and contests are that much closer. That’s why the focus is on North American power sports giant Polaris, who are far from content simply to slug it out for dominance in the world of ATVs and snowmobiles. As the masters of both the Victory and Indian brands of road bike, Polaris are happy to foster a little rivalry between the ‘kids’.

Though in this case, the differences between the classic cool of the Indian Scout and the menacing, muscle-car-inspired Victory Octane put them in two very different classes of their own. And their aim is a two-pronged attack on the dominance of the elephant in the room — Harley Davidson.

The Scout does more than just tip its hat to the classic, retro style of its famous forebears — and the speed record monster built by Kiwi Burt Munro. By contrast, the Octane sports a longer profile, bigger wheels and an aggressively modern ‘blacked out’ look. While both bikes share about thirty per cent of their parts, including the fraternal adoption of a clever aluminium and steel frame layout, the finished look, feel and handling of both machines is as different as a precision chef’s knife is from a military bayonet. Both are

The new Indian Scout is based on a true classic with pedigree to spare

very sharp tools, but made to excel in different hands.

There’s a tiny tweak in engine size, too, from 1,133cc to 1,179cc, but with both bikes roaring up to 100km/h in the four-second bracket, such minor differences will be scrutinised only by the fiercely pedantic. What the world is comparing is this — the revival of a badge with more history and character than some of Britain’s aristocracy, up against a carbon-black bullet of a bike which would look perfectly at home in Bruce Wayne’s batcave. Polaris hope that the masses reason thusly — for just shy of $22,000 all up, those who love Americana and heritage will fancy the Scout over a Harley Davidson Sportster 1200. While those who are intoxicated by burning the Octane’s namesake will see it as a real contender against the V-Rod — and more individual.

As such, there’s no family feud here at all. Just a couple of brothers taking it to the competition with two very distinct and separate styles.

DOES CHOCOLATE HOLD A KEY TO YOUR HEART?

Spud farmer wins Rural Bachelor of the Year This year’s Rural Bachelor of the year has been announced and it’s Paul Olsen from the Manawatu.

Also known as ‘Spud’, Olsen proved a force to be reckoned with over the course of a very close competition.

According to the judges, factors such as honesty, intelligence and enthusiasm, but most importantly, a sense of humour were all taken into account when deciding on the winner.

“I think it’s been an incredible oppor tunity to benchmark ourselves against our peers and see how broad a spectrum we have as far as skill sets go. I’d also like to thank the fellow competitors. The week has been absolutely amazing and without the laughs and input that we’ve had, it would not have been the same.”

NZ National Fieldays Soc ie t y P res ident , Warwick Roberts, says the competition will carry on for many more years to come.

“It’s an amazing event, I know it would be daunting to be a young bachelor here, but it’s a great opportunity to advertise and publicise the farmers that make this country work.”

Throughout the week, the eight eligible rural bachelors competed in a series of challenges from wood splitting to blind dating, testing not only their agricultural skills, but also their attitude and all-round charisma. Coming from both New Zealand and Australia, the

Paul Olsen Rural Bachelor winner from Manawatu holding his sought after trophy the golden gumboot

bachelors quickly formed a close bond and spent much of the competition teasing and cheering each other on.

In between challenges, the boys were also able to meet and spend time with the bachelorettes, known as ‘The Gumboot Girls’, including enjoying a date night out at Hobbiton.

Planning farm burn-offsFarmers are being urged to thoroughly manage risks during burn-offs after a company was fined $72,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $107,000 following the death of an employee.

The employee died when he became trapped by fire in a gully during a burn-off on a 13,500-hectare high country station near Cromwell on September 3, 2014.

At the Alexandra District Court, Northburn Limited was sentenced on a charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act for failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of an employee.

WorkSafe New Zealand’s investigation found that Northburn Limited did not have an effective system for managing health and safety, and there was no documented plan in place for a burn-off — considered a high-risk task.

WorkSafe’s Chief Inspector, Keith Stewart, says there were numerous practicable steps Northburn Limited could have taken to prevent the death of the employee.

“There were various methods available to Northburn Limited, including using a sufficient number of trained people to

carry out the burn-off. It is considered industry best practice that both sides of a gully should be burnt simultaneously.

“The company did not identify a safe area for employees to retreat to, or an escape route, or that the fire was lit from an ‘anchor point’, a safe area to start a fire from.

“There was also no adequate communication system, or a person acting as a lookout. The victim was not provided proper personal protective equipment.”

The day of the victim’s death was the second day he had been involved in a burn-off — he had no training for the task and he was at times left unsupervised.

“This incident is a tragic reminder that planning and the use of good information is essential for a safe and effective burn-off,” says WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme Manager, Al McCone.

“For many farmers, burn-offs are a useful and routine tool to encourage growth. What is important is thinking

about the risks and thinking about what to do about managing those risks.

“There is a range of guidance on burn-offs including The Landowners Guide to Land Clearing by Prescribed Burning from the national rural fire authority. There is also other information available

on the Safer Farms website. I also encourage farmers to get in touch with their local rural fire authority. They can provide advice and information specific to their area.

“Rural fire authorities do not charge for this service.”

Keith Stewart — Worksafe’s chief inspector
