This will be our last meeting in thecurrent RACV Club as theRACV move into theirnew building at 501Bourke Street on the 4thof July.

The Tech Day washeld on Saturday 21stMay at Volkshome inCommercial DriveThomastown, where JohnGoodison ably assisted byBoris, Andrew Ermel andLloyd Davies explainedthe vehicle preparationsrequired prior to a longtrip. The day was a greatsuccess with approxi-

mately 40 people attending, with the daynot finishing until 4pm.

Thank you very much John, Boris,Andrew and Lloyd for your explanations andguidance. The members whose cars werechecked gained a valuable insight into thepreparations required, as did all who attend-ed. A checklist of the items can be found onpages 26-27.

Welcome to the June edition of theWagensville News.

As indicated last month, the magazinefor May was printed and posted one weekearlier than normal, so I hope you allreceived your copy. As an indication at thelast general meeting, we had approximately60 attendees, some ofwho did say that theearlier receipt of themagazine was a promptto attend the meeting. We will now try and keepthis timing for all futureissues. Thanks Matt.

Also at the lastgeneral meeting we didindicate that the Junemeeting would be held atthe Coburg Drive-In for aspecial screening of thenew Herbie movie.Unfortunately, the club’snegotiations with theorganisers over the start time of the moviehave not been successful, so as a result, themeeting on the 21st of June will be held asnormal at the RACV Club commencing at8pm. The organisers of the movie wanted tocommence the screening at 11pm and webelieved that this was too late on a weekdayfor members and young families. However,we are fortunate that we can now see the

The VWCV Dinner Dance held on the 28thof May at the RACV Club was a tremendoussuccess with a total of 69 people attending. Aspecial thanks must go to Jen Littlechild,Cheryl and Andrew Ermel for the preparationsfor the evening, and thanks to all who attend-ed on the night.

The following day, the VWCV Concoursewas held at the RAAF Base at Point Cook. The day started cool and wet but fined upwith the sun coming out in the afternoon.

A total of 37 cars were offered for judgingwith a total of approximately 60 Volkswagensin attendance. Again a special thanks for theorganisers Richard Graham and Cheryl Ermel. It was great to see some new cars presentedon the day which keeps the pressure on theolder cars (like mine), and the need for us toconstantly continue to improve our cars. Iknow it’s a Japanese word not a German one,but the word in Japanese for continuedimprovement is KAIZEN. According to myEnglish/German dictionary, the German wordfor improvement is “verbesserung” but I’mnot sure if this is the same as “continuedimprovement?” May be some members with agood command of the German language couldassist me, please.

The important thing is that weneed to continually keep improvingour cars - that is our challenge.

Don’t forget that the nextmeeting will be at the RACVClub on the 21st of June.I’ll see you then. •

Happy Driving > Herald Sun - 5/2005

LONDON - The most cheerful driver on British roads is likely to be female, aged 24 or less and driving a green Volkswagen Beetle. This happy motoristis also probably listening to Bob Marley music while chewing sugar-free gumand looking forward to a date, research for the Royal Auto Club Foundationfound. Young women drivers in Britain recorded the highest smiles per hour ratio, with drivers aged66 or more proving to be the most stern faced behind the wheel. The survey, involving 900 drivers, was carried out to coincide with National Smile Week. The survey showed those with green carssmiled most, while those with lilac and yellow cars smiled the least, while favourite driving music wasreggae, ‘60s and ‘70s oldies, and 1970s West Coast rock.

Aircooled VW EngineA Survival Story

> Bill Malkoutzis on the downfall of the air-cooled engine in Australia...

The early to mid seventies saw a significantshift in focus on the motor car and the roll itplayed in our lives. Road trauma was gettingout of control, Victoria alone had over athousand people dying every year on ourroads due to road accidents. Also the exhaustemissions of the growing numbers of motorcars (and industry) were changing the weath-er patterns over our cities.Remember the fogs / smogsthat we use to experienceduring days of little wind?Because of the ever increasingpersonal and environmentalburden, the expectation of themotor vehicle changed.

It was about the mid seven-ties that we started seeingfeatures like collapsible steeringcolumns, seat belts and theiranchorages, head restraints (head rests) onour seats, and twin circuit brake master cylin-ders in some European motor cars - all ofwhich helped lower the road trauma and avoidaccidents. The Beetle in Australia lead theway in many of these areas, having twincircuit braked master cylinders, disc brakesand collapsible steering column from 1969,head rests from 1971, and stronger seatanchorages from 1975. I’m sure the enthusi-asts out there know all the changes.

The poor old Beetle died of a thousandcuts because of this change in our communi-ty’s expectation of the motor car. As theworld’s population grew and the number ofcars in any country started to effect the living

environment, cars in general came under closescrutiny as to the affect they had on thatenvironment, and what could be done tominimise those affects. Exhaust emissionsbecame the focus of industrialised govern-ments around the world. Some of the firstemission controls on cars addressed evapora-tive emissions. Evaporative emissions refer to

the evaporation of the fuel inthe fuel tank to the atmosphere. In Australia evaporativeemissions were introduced in1975. Bugs of this period werefitted with canisters whichcontained carbon pelts thatabsorbed the vapours from thefuel tank, and the enginepurged and burnt thesevapours off under certainengine operating conditions.

The next major jump in vehicle expectationwas the introduction of ADR 27A in July 1st1976. This law and similar ones around theworld, in my opinion, was the final cut thatkilled the Type 1 based Beetle, or morecorrectly, the VW type based air-cooledengine.

The introduction of ADR 27 requires that amotor vehicle engine not discharge more thana certain level of carbon monoxides, or nitrousoxides. In the early days of emission controlledengines, and before catalytic converters, engine design relied on various methods tocontrol these gases. One was the technique offeeding into the inlet manifold controlledamounts of exhaust gases to improve the

Page 13: Wagensville JUNE 05

13

combustion process and result in the emissiontargets. This was known as EGR or exhaustgas recirculation. Another was the use of anair pump. This consisted of the obvious littleair pump driven off the crank shaft, whichpumped fresh air into the exhaust system justafter the exhaust port, which has the effect ofcompleting the combustion process while theexhaust fumes travelled the length of theexhaust. (AKA VW Golfs post June 1976). Yetanother method is to shape the combustionchamber - that is the pocket in the cylinderhead and the shape of the crown of the pistonto change the way the fuel andair burns and expands withinthe engine. In other words, design the engine for the taskthat is required - low exhaustemissions. Even while theseearly laws were being intro-duced even more stringentlevels where being openlyplanned for in the near future.

The dear old Type1 air-cooled engine was designed byits famous designer Ferdinand Porsche as asimple basic power unit that would bedurable, easy, and low cost to manufacture, back in 1938. Over time, as the science ofengine design matured so too did the Type 1engine - 1036cc, 1122cc, 1198cc, 1278cc, 1488,1586cc. Throughout its life the basic designdid not really change. The design was updat-ed with each displacement increase to breathebetter, and increase efficiency and poweroutput, but exhaust emission was not a priori-ty in the mind of the engineers at the time, other than its effect on fuel consumption.

Well before 1976 with the introduction ofADR 27A, FMVSS in the USA, and ECE inEurope, Volkswagen was well aware of theselooming legislations. Their design team wouldhave had meeting after meeting discussinghow this new challenge would be met byVolkswagen. Work of this type would havestarted as far back as 1969 (based myresearch). The ideas that would have beenconsidered at the time I believe would havebeen many and varied. The following are someof what I believe most likely would have beenconsidered. What would it take to make thecurrent engine comply with these standards?Let’s build a couple of prototypes and measurethem and see what they’re like? The results of

these questions would have resulted in anECR and air pump being fitted as describedpreviously, and the auxiliary equipmentsuitably modified or tuned to match. My guessis, the car most likely was fitted with a 1500 or1600cc base engine and with these parasiticfeatures added would have been very low inpower. My guess would be compared to the55 hp of a 1600cc as we know them; theequivalent pollution model would have beenless than 40 hp. The vehicle most likely ranquite hot as the combustion temperatureswould have been quite high due to the EGR

and lean setting on the car. Itwould not have been impres-sive. About this time VW wasalso considering a replacementfor the Beetle, code name EA26.This was a hatchback typedesign with a flat (Type 3) air-cooled engine under the backseat. VW would have builtscratch designed air-cooledengines to both suit the car andit’s upgrades as well as the

emission standards of the future. I would notbe surprised if these prototypes were werethe Type 4 air-cooled 18-2000cc engine wasderived from. Again heat would have been aproblem.

To achieve all the targets, the enginedesigners would have had to redesign thecombustion chamber i.e. the heads, the barrelsand pistons etc. Very major redesigns just tokeep the car design alive. The VW engineersand management in crude terms would havebeen faced with the decision of; should Ithrow money at an engine design that mayonly survive for another few years, before amore stringent emission standard is legislated,or; do I have to start with a fresh sheet ofpaper and design an engine with the basicfoundation design that would suit the immedi-ate foreseeable emission standards, and maybe coming? This would have been a veryemotional decision as, VW hadalways relied on the security of littlechange year to year, which ensuredyou never disassociated yourselfwith your known clientele. •

Get Downand Boogie!

> The VWCV 2005 Dinner Dance by Cheryl Ermel

18

Who said that VW owners have no rhythm orsoul? Well around 70 members proved thiswrong by attending the annual club dinnerdance the RACV Rooftop restaurant onSaturday the 28th of May. The dress for thenight was after five and everyone camelooking very handsome in their evening attire.

After very short speeches from Paul andRichard, we sat down to a three coursedinner. It was silver service all the way as theRACV staff served up chicken terriyaki rolls, lamb tandoori, roast beef, salmon and twovery delicious desserts. While we were eatingthe seven piece band ”Heatwave” providedmusic to eat by.

After a couple of quick door prizes it wastime to get down and boogie. The band start-ed playing some blues and soul and the dancefloor started to fill with usual people. However, this did not last long as people whowould normally sit and watch were persuadedto show their moves. The music was funkyand the moves on the dance floor were evenfunkier. Two encores around midnight saw anend to a great night with lots of membersgoing away happy.

Some of the members made it even a

better night by staying on at the RACVovernight to recuperate.

Thanks to Jen Littlechild for her persist-ence in organising the event andeveryone that helped out with thedecorating on the night. •

I was sitting watching TVone night and my 16 year olddaughter came to me andasked if she and her debpartner could go to theirdebutante ball in my newlyrestored Beetle. Most hadchosen to travel in limou-sines and she wanted to goin something different.Of course I said yes withpride.

The next evening, mydaughter went out into thegarage and cleaned andprepared the car for thefollowing Saturday as itcould not come soon enough. The Saturday afternoon start-ed around 3pm, bright and sunny. When herdeb partner and his mother arrived, theywere happy and delighted with what theysaw. The mother took quite an interest inthe Beetle as she is a mechanical engineerwith Ford. After some photos we headed offon our ride to Mooney Valley via QueensPark for some more photos with otherschool friends. On the way we got thecustomary stares and the odd toot frompassing cars.

At 4:15pm we arrived at Mooney Valley, where video was taken of all the arrivingcars and debutante participants, so it couldbe played back on the big screen as part ofthe evening’s entertainment. The ball start-ed at 7pm, where the students put on

themed performances in their variousgroups.

Firstly, the arrival footage was displayedon the big screen, where a particular groupof students were shown arriving in a horsedrawn carriage.

This was followed by limo after limo, and in the middle of it all, the Beetle drivesin. To our surprise it received theloudest cheer and applause of theevening.

After a good meal, a drink ortwo, a little bit of dancing, and agreat show from the students, the evening finished in the latehours of the night. •

VWCV 2005Concourse

> Matt Kinsey

The VWCV held it’s annual concourse at theRAAF Point Cook Museum on Sunday 29thMay. The day dawned cold but fine - manyparticipants journeyed directly from theRACV Club in the city, after enjoying theprevious night’s festivities at the dinnerdance.

A fine selection of vehicles graced theconcourse this year - some never seenbefore cars making their first appearanceson the show scene. 37 Volkswagens in totalentered the concourse on the day, but therewere many others present.

The standard of vehicles entered wasextremely high - making judging somecategories very difficult. Many entrants hadobviously gone to a lot of trouble preparingtheir vehicles - even the underbodies ofmany were immaculate.

While judging took place, some peoplewent for a stroll around the adjacent RAAFMuseum, with it’s fine display of veteranaircraft and memorabilia. Other membersmade good use of the club’s BBQ facilities.

Car of the Show this year went to JohnBradley with his freshly restored 1960Beetle - it really left everybody druelingwith the quality of it’s restoration, and set
