Negotiate a Better Deal
Warranty protection andmaintenance plans are add-ons thatyou can decide to go with or without.Even the due date for your firstpayment can often be a point ofnegotiation.
NEGOTIATIONBASICS
Successful negotiation comes fromequipping yourself with strong knowl-edge. Do a little research on particularused vehicles you may be interestedin. Check their most common pricesfor specific years. Know about theirmileage “life expectancy” and howlong it usually takes certain parts tostart wearing down.
Any and all vehicle-specificinformation you possess entering anegotiation will help you in reachinga fair and balanced price.
NEGOTIATIONTIPS
Follow these guidelines whennegotiating:
% ./-6 6;- 1-8&#* /*"-:93:9/" 69:;'Is it a reputable dealer? Is it a familyfriend? A complete stranger? Thesetypes of questions will let you knowhow much you can trust your co-negotiator.
% (-/&: 0* 3$#39, :- 237* :;* $9#!:offer. And if you do, make it a lowone. Stay in the ballpark of theoriginal price point, but let it be
known that you won’t be paying fullprice.
% +4!-) ,-/&: 0* 3$#39, :- 6347' 5;*#*are some things you can’t compromiseon, and if you feel like you are beingdisrespected, take your business else-where.
PAY ATTENTIONNegotiation skills work well, but you
have to remember the details once theclosing process gets under way. Onceyou have a deal, make sure the trans-action is completed properly.
Some salespeople are great atadding extras near the end of a deal. This can completely wipe out anygains you may have made in thenegotiation process. Hold firm toyour position and come out satisfiedin the end.
Ever hear the phrase, “Everything is negotiable?” Well, that doesn’tring any truer than in the vehicle-purchasing process. With so manyaspects to buying a new car, many parts are fair game for a little
back-and-forth — and not just related to pricing.

Good habits to keep teens safe on the road(BPT) - No one startstheir day anticipat-ing getting into a carcrash. But it only takesone time to be ridingin a vehicle withoutbuckling up for a lifeto be changed forever.Motor vehicle crashesare the number onekiller of teens in theU.S. Fatalities are splitalmost equally betweenteen drivers and passen-gers. In half of all fatalcrashes, the teen wasnot wearing a seatbelt.
A recent study foundthat one in four teenssay they don’t use a seatbelt on every ride. The
report, “Teens in Cars,”released by Safe KidsWorldwide, and fundedas part of a $2 milliongrant from the GeneralMotors Foundation, sur-veyed 1,000 teens ages13 to 19. The reportlooked at why teensdon’t always buckleup, how often they textor talk on the phonewhile driving, and whatthey do when they feelunsafe in a car.
The top reasons teensgave for not bucklingup were that they forgotor it was not a habit, they were not goingfar, or the seat belt was
not comfortable. Askedwhy other teens don’tbuckle up, one in threeteens said that going toa party was a reason.
Another eye-openingfinding from the reportis that thirty-nine per-cent of teens said theyhave ridden with a teendriver who was texting, and 95 percent said theythink other teens haveridden with drivers whowere texting. Teenswho don’t always useseat belts are also morelikely to report thatthey text while drivingthan those who say theywear a seat belt every
time. About 43 percentof teens reported ridingas a passenger with ateen driver who wastalking on a phone.A few more surprisingresults include:
* More than half ofteens said they haveseen a parent talking onthe phone while driving, and 28 percent havebeen riding in a carwith a parent who wastexting.
* Forty-nine percent ofteens felt concerned fortheir safety when ridingwith a teen driver and31 percent of teens said
they felt unsafe with aparent driving.
* When asked whatteens did in asituation when in a carwith someone drivingdangerously, four in 10teens said they askedthe driver to stop, butalmost the same numbersaid they did nothing.
Safe Kids Worldwiderecommends these tipsfor parents of teens toremember while ridingin cars:
* Buckle up on everyride, every time. This isimportant for everyone,
both drivers andpassengers. Make buck-ling up a habit startingwhen kids are young.
* Be a good role modelin all your drivinghabits. Teens oftenmodel their behaviorfrom their parents, andthey’ve been watchingtheir parents in carssince they were infants. So if parents are puttingphones down and buck-ling up on every ride, then teens may be morelikely to do the same.

How to Save on Gas during a Road TripThe cost of gas isenough to make somefamilies think twiceabout taking a familyvacation. These threetips from Ronald M.Weiers, author of “GA$SMART$: Hundredsof Small Ways to SaveBig at the Pump” willhelp you make the mostof every gallon.
1. Relax in theVehicular Parade.
It’s inevitable: Atsome point, you willbe trapped in a streamof vehicles on a curvyroad or in a no-passingzone.The typical driver willalternate between theaccelerator pedal andbrake pedal as thoughthey are buttons on akeyboard. That kind ofjerky driving is very in-efficient. Instead, try torelax — listen to some
music or gaze around atthe countryside — andremember that eventu-ally you will be theperson at the beginningof the parade.Use that same soft andgentle approach when-ever you drive to getthe best fuel economy.
2. Obey the SpeedLimits.Speed limits exist forsafety reasons, but
they contribute tofuel economy as well. Many drivers routinelyexceed speed limits, taking the chance theywon’t get caught.Even if the policedon’t catch you, thegas pump will. Ac-cording to the Envi-ronmental ProtectionAgency, each 5 mphyou drive over 60 mphcan reduce your fueleconomy by
about 8 percent.
3. Keep Your TiresProperly Inflated.Underinflated tires aredangerous and ineffi-cient and the increasedrolling resistance cangreatly reduce fueleconomy. According tothe U.S. Department ofEnergy, when all fourtires are underinflatedby 10 pounds, yourfuel economy will be
reduced by 3 percent.Tire pressure recom-mendations can befound in your owner’smanual or on a stickeron the trunk lid, driv-er’s side door or doorframe. Buy a tire gaugeand check your tiresregularly. For the best reading, check your tires whenthey have not beendriven for at least threehours.
