...and the decade of declineThe sixties started promisingly enough, as Allotment looked to build on their previous successes. The club finished as runners-up in the Northern Amateur League in 1960, and were consecutive Minor Cup finalists in 1960 and 1961.

However, whilst Celtic remained loyal to the Northern Amateur League, the bulk of the team moved on, and Allotment entered a period of decline as a result. The club stagnated badly during the sixties in an uncompetitive league, and closure become a distinctly worrying possibility.

The threat of dissolution was eventually staved off by the introduction of new blood into the club towards the end of the decade, as Allotment finally began to build towards a more positive future on and off the pitch. Celtic also moved to Backworth Welfare in 1968, consigning the ponds and mud of the Farm Ground to memory.

from creation to contendersWest Allotment Celtic were formed in 1928, the culmination of a merger between West Allotment Primitive Methodists and West Allotment Juniors. After moving to the newly-created Tynemouth & District League in 1935, the club began to grow in stature. The club had to face Whitley Bay & Monkseaton Reserves in a play-off for the title, but unfortunately, the decider went the way of the seasiders. Remarkably, Allotment also finished in a play-off position in the following two seasons – and, in both cases, had to settle for a runner-up spot.

changing leagues, shedsand timesIn 1938, the club joined the Second Division of the Northern Amateur League. Now playing at the aptly-named Farm Ground, fans helped to dismantle a cowshed in Heaton and move it, piece by piece, to West Allotment, where it was reassembled at the ground. The shed was not for spectators – it served as the players’ changing facilities! The club earned instant promotion (after a play-off, such is club tradition), but World War II put a stop to any further progress.

a succession of successes...The club recommenced operations in 1946/47 and enjoyed an unprecedented run of success from the mid-fifties onwards. Allotment won the championship for four consecutive seasons between 1956 and 1960, along with the NFA Amateur Cup in 1957 and the NFA Minor Cup in 1958.

eighty-five years in the makingwho averaged almost one goal a game in his 400 appearances for the club. Williams was ably supported by a talented and hungry squad, and, with strength in depth, Allotment were always considered title contenders. However, the championship remained tantalisingly out of reach until yet another play-off tie in 1982. Allotment finally won the coveted title, defeating Annitsford Welfare by the odd goal in seven.

When Celtic retained the title with relative ease the following season, the decision was taken to move up a tier for the first time since 1938.

the colossus of the allianceIn 1983, Allotment made its debut in both the Northern Alliance and the FA Vase. The first honour of the period arrived just one season later, as Allotment dispatched Ponteland United in the Alliance Challenge Cup Final. This success was followed up two seasons later by the first of Celtic’s eight Alliance titles.

In 1987, West Allotment emerged victorious from two nail-biting play-off games against Gosforth St. Nicholas, ushering in a wave of success not enjoyed at the club since the fifties. Throughout this period, Celtic won seven further Northern

Alliance titles, never finishing lower than sixth. Terry Mitchell and Brian Latty built upon Ken Scott and Billy Hays’ consecutive Alliance league titles, leading Allotment into the Northern League.

the modern dayHaving acted as tenants at Hillheads in Whitley Bay since 1995, the club set out to find a new home, and found it in Benton. In 2001, the club moved to Whitley Park, also known as the Blue Flames Sports Ground. The ground is well-known as one of the best kept pitches in the Northern League, and also serves as the headquarters of the Northumberland FA.

The club earned promotion from Division Two as champions, losing just twice throughout the entire 2004/05 season. After six seasons of holding their own against the Northern League’s top tier, Allotment slipped back down a league. The current crop have gone some way to restoring success at Allotment, winning the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup last May, and will be aiming for those promotion places this season.

to build on his impressive debut in the Northern

League.

A first-team regular since signing for Allotment from Ryton in 2010,

John’s relentless work ethic and tenacious

tackling bring stability to the back four. The

full-back often serves as captain in the absence of

Ian Dunn.

Chris DouglasRB Age: 26

The ultimate utility player, Chris can be employed anywhere down either

flank to devastating effect. The former North Shields man’s pace and

perception underpins his undoubted ability, be it as a full-back or a wide

midfielder.

Bob RodgersonGK Age: 31

A Percy Main Amateurs regular, Bob performed admirably when filling in during a goalkeeping crisis towards the back end of last season, and

has registered once again to be our third choice

The former Ponteland United and Dunston full-back has proven to be an asset to the club in both defence and attack. His crossing ability in both regular play and from

set-pieces is second to none.

Roy rejoins Celtic for a second spell, having

season. Able to play in a number of positions, the experienced utility man has also turned out for North Shields, Consett

and Annfield Plain.

David Henderson rejoined the club last

season, and the former North Shields schemer provides another option going forward through the middle. Henders is arguably one of the

most skilful players in the squad.

forward, or even an adept centre-back. The former Ryton forward is one of Celtic’s most promising

captain’s armband in the process. “Dunny” remains one of Celtic’s key men

deep in the heart of midfield.

become a mainstay in the Celtic squad. His astute passing, ball retention

skills and battling tenacity are evident whenever he is called upon in central

West Allotment Celtic made it three wins

in the space of ten days on Friday night, defeating visitors Whickham by three goals to one.

In a lively opening, both sides set a high tempo, but their respective forwards could not engineer an early breakthrough. First, David Dormand could not quite control a sweet Hudson cross into the box, whilst at the other end, a weaving Sam MacIntosh run resulted in little more than a tame effort at the ‘keeper.

The half ’s big chances soon came Allotment’s way. Reinvigorated winger Dean Lee was played through on goal by Dormand’s slide rule pass, but the 30-year-old’s central effort

was poked away by the boot of ‘keeper John Mordey.

The returning Sean Reid was next to threaten, having started and almost finished one of the game’s best moves. The midfielder exchanged sweeping cross-field passes with Marc Dummett, receiving the ball in the area, but firing his shot too close to Mordey, who got down to make the save.

Celtic had the edge after thirty minutes, and could have taken the lead, had Dormand converted another whipped Hudson ball into the six yard box. Their high-flying opponents offered little going forward, with a wayward Mark Fitzpatrick strike constituting the Home Guard’s best opportunity to break the

deadlock.

The game’s first goal came soon after – much to the delight of the home fans. The hard-running Lee latched onto Latimer’s first-time flick, eventually bundling the ball past Mordey in the Whickham net.

The opening strike was not the only game-changer, as Whickham were reduced to ten men moments later. Fitzpatrick believed that he was fouled on the edge of the area, but the free kick was not forthcoming. Following some verbal remonstrating with the referee, the forward was shown a straight red card for dissent, throwing his side’s plans into disarray. Celtic pushed on, and Stoneman had an effort hacked off the line, but took a one-goal

Robin Falcus’ men surprisingly came out stronger after the interval, and Stoneman had to be alert to deny them on the break with a crunching challenge, whilst defensive partner Glenn Ford threw himself in front of a vicious Rudi Nellis strike. Ross Peareth was next to try his luck, shooting tamely at Bannon, but for Whickham could not get behind Allotment’s sturdy back four.

Any jangling nerves were soon settled by Celtic’s second of the evening. Dormand’s initial shot was closed down well by the onrushing Mordey, but the ball ricocheted off the ‘keeper and back onto the striker’s thigh, with the ball fortuitously looping high into the net.

With ten-man Whickham now chasing the game, Celtic had chances to extend their lead. Douglas spurned a good chance following a superb floated Lee ball, but the sub made amends within minutes, drawing the ‘keeper out of his goal, before coolly slotting home from an acute angle.

Whickham did grab a consolation in the game’s dying embers – a finish at the back post from Tony Thirkell that squirmed through Bannon’s legs – but the evening belonged to Allotment, who deserved to pick up all three points against one of the division’s form sides.

I knew we’d get a good reaction, and we did. I thought eleven versus eleven we were the better side, played the better football. Our football was probably a bit limited, but what football was played, was played by us. Whickham’s early dismissal

It was definitely dissent. I can’t repeat what he said, but there were swear words in there, twice, and the referee was five yards away from him. I knew pretty much straightaway he was going to send him off if he did his job properly, which he did. I think the lad had to go.

Second half, one-nil up, playing against ten men, I tried to tell the lads not to let their standards drop, but it is hard against ten men, you do take your foot off the gas. I thought we did that a little bit, let

ourselves down a little bit for twenty-five minutes or so in the second half, and eventually got the second goal that killed the game off. We were the better side eleven versus eleven, so it doesn’t concern me that we took our foot off, because we’ve probably just beaten the form team of the league so far.

Result-wise, I’m over the moon, because they’ve been flying. We’ve won four games out of five now, and not really played as well as we can. As soon as we start firing on all cylinders, I think somebody might get a hiding off us.

We left him out at Willington because we knew it was going to be a big, strong, physical challenge, and I just told him we’ve got three home games coming up and he’d be playing in them, to go and express himself, and I thought tonight he was excellent. His tracking back was a different class, and he showed glimpses of his old

self. We told him not to play with any pressure, and he did, he came inside and got the ball, got himself a goal as well. So I’m over the moon for Deano. Hopefully he’ll push on now and produce some more goals.

Hopefully we’ll have David Henderson back involved, back in the frame come Wednesday night. He may get a start, I’m not sure yet, but I will freshen it up again, because they’re firing on all cylinders as well, so we’re going to have to be at it for ninety minutes against them. I’ll probably go and watch them tomorrow, do a little bit of homework on them. So we’ll prepare properly and hopefully, on our patch, we’ll get another win and keep climbing that table.

Allotment produced their second

comeback in three days, coming from behind to defeat Seaham Red Star on Wednesday night.

The Star stunned Whitley Park in the third minute, scoring from the first attack of the game. A floated cross-field pass found Malley on the right, who had time to control the ball and drift past full-back Dummett. The wide man’s attempted chip was poor, but still evaded ‘keeper Lee Wall, putting Seaham in front early on.

Despite the early setback, Allotment pressed on, and Dean Lee had a stonewall penalty appeal rejected by the referee, before striking straight

at Shaun Newbrook from eight yards out after good work from Hudson.

Michael Turnbull briefly threatened for the visitors, but Celtic were creating most of the game’s openings, only to suffer from their own profligacy. Reid and Bell both hammered efforts over the bar, whilst Hudson was unfortunate to see a goalbound effort hacked off the line after beating Newbrook to the ball.

After half-time, the pattern remained the same, with Celtic creating much but drawing a blank. Reid headed Dummett’s deep cross wide from six yards when it looked easier to score, before Seaham cleared off the line for a second time, denying player-manager Stoneman.

Despite being under the cosh, Seaham almost doubled their lead on the break, but the unmarked Channon North was denied by a spectacular point-blank save from Wall, who went on to deny the rangy forward and Paul Kane thereafter.

Having weathered the brief storm, Allotment finally got the leveller that their play deserved. Reid just about headed Dummett’s cross over the line, pulling the hosts level.

With just seven minutes left on the clock, and after missing a host of chances, Celtic snatched the winner. Sub Chris Douglas’ second cross found the impressive Dean Lee, who prodded the ball beneath Newbrook to seal a hard-fought win.

Having come through their toughest test

of the Division Two campaign unscathed, West Allotment Celtic hope to make it two wins in eight days against potential promotion rivals.

The convincing 3-1 win against Whickham was Allotment’s third on the bounce, following on from victories against Stokesley and at Willington - and a fourth would send out a message to Division Two’s top teams.

A llotment may have picked up three

consecutive wins - but tonight’s visitors have gone one better.

Mark Collingwood’s Seaham Red Star outfit have racked up four successive victories in as many games, with their only league defeat coming at fellow favourites Jarrow Roofing.

Since that result - and an early FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighouse Town - the Star have kicked on, comfortably defeating Washington by three goals

Aiding the cause tonight is the returning David Henderson. Widely regarded as one of Celtic’s most talented ball players, the influential midfielder looks set to start. His return is timely, as Michael Bell is unavailable for this evening’s fixture, whilst Michael Latimer misses out with a virus. Marc Allen is expected to deputise in his stead.

There’s better news regarding the fitness of centre-half Stephen Little. The 26-year-old has made a full recovery from a double

at Seaham Town Park, before trouncing Chester-le-Street by six goals to one - on their own turf. Midfielder Josh Allan and striker Adam Johnston both grabbed a brace each - and the latter continued his rich form on the road two days later, claiming the match ball with three of Seaham’s five goals at Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Another two from Johnston and one from substitute Channon North secured a comfortable win at home to Tow Law Town, ultimately affording the Star

a very comfortable +17 goal difference at this early stage of the season.

It’s not just the potent forwards in County Durham that have contributed to Seaham’s strong early start - the back four have conceded just five times in the league, with three of those coming against the Roofers.

After a season of transition in 2012/13, Colly’s side are now a daunting threat going forward and look solid at the back. Celtic will have to be at their best to extinguish the Star’s bright lights tonight.

Midfield maestro David Henderson is expected to return to the fold tonight. His presence has been missed by the squad and the fans alike, but, having recovered from a broken hand sustained just prior to the start of the season, Henders could bring his neat interplay and tidy passing back to Allotment’s midfield three.

Adam Johnston may not have converted this chance against Chester-le-Street, but the prolific centre-forward is already firing on all cylinders, bagging an astounding eleven goals in just six league games. Only Jonathan Wright of Heaton Stannington has bettered such a tally. Allotment will have to keep a very close eye on the wily veteran this evening.

Seaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the club’s first manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and soon made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After five fairly successful seasons, the club joined the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, as the Star won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season.

Bryan Mayhew took over as chairman of the club in 1986 and, with able support from a small hardworking committee, the club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken

fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000.

Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years of history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from the locals, a new committee was formed and the resignation was withdrawn. The club failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1.

Experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadied the ship after Neil Hixon’s departure, and the club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Hixon returned as manager in 2005, putting together a promotion-winning side in the 2006/07 season. Hixon and Herd moved on, and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw Andy Toman taking the reins, Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation.

The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in Red Star history, as the club flirted with and narrowly avoided relegation, but incumbent manager Mark Collingwood will already be looking to build on a solid tenth place finish in the last campaign.

Carl ThorpAnother former member of Colly’s squad at Hebburn Reyrolle, tough tackler and aerially dominant centre-half Thorp serves as the Star’s captain, and always gives everything for the club.

Richard StubbsCapable of playing at full-back or in central midfield, Stubbs is equally proficient in both the tackle and the pass, and shared the Players’ Player of the Year award with his captain last season.

David ShortA former member of Sunderland’s academy, Short brings genuine quality to the back four. Defensively proficient, the ex-Ryhope man can also provide good service in attacking scenarios.

Daniel GrayAnother of Seaham’s versatile players, Daniel can function at full-back or in midfield. Powerful in the air, “Dappa” added seven goals to his game during the last campaign.

Richie GoodmanRichie is renowned in County Durham as a hard grafter and a versatile member of the squad. Since making his debut in 2010, the midfielder has racked up almost 100 appearances for the club.

Josh AllanCreative midfielder Allan previously turned out for Gateshead’s reserve side, before plying his trade for Jarrow Roofing. An exciting player to watch, and one to keep an eye on this evening.

Channon NorthThe rangy forward was Seaham’s main attacking outlet last year, ending the season with 26 goals to his name. A danger in the air and with the ball at his feet, former Reyrolle striker Channon will require close attention.

Shaun ReayFormerly of Darlington and Blyth Spartans, explosive striker Reay has pace to burn - which often contributes to his high scoring rate. The 24-year-old looks set to make a big impact for the Star this season.

Adam JohnstonVeteran centre-forward Johnston has been on the scene for over a decade, having played for Gateshead, Whitley Bay and Spennymoor, to name but a few. The poacher has already laid bare his goalscoring intentions - bagging 9 goals in just 6 games thus far.

Chris ScottBox-to-box midfielder Chris joined Seaham from South Shields last season, fast becoming an integral cog in the Star machine. He has continued in a similar vein this season, already picking up two MotM awards for his efforts.

FOR many players, Saturday can never

come soon enough - and for some, it still doesn’t suffice. Despite finishing a hard day of semi-professional graft at 5pm, those lads can be found at their local playing field just seventeen hours later, pulling on a different shirt on what should be their prescribed day of rest.

Glenn Ford was one such player. The centre-half re-signed for Celtic in the latter half of last season, making five starts in midweek games and Saturday afternoons - but appeared regularly for North

East Sunday League titans Blakelaw. Now, the 29-year-old’s days of football on the sabbath are well behind him, with Saturday aspirations firmly in his sights.

“I think it’s enough for me! I’m at that age now, touching thirty next year. I think it’s a case of just concentrating on the mighty Allotment and trying to go for the league, to tell the truth. Rap in the Sundays and focus on Allotment.”

The seasoned stopper has already started more games in August than he did for the entirety of last season. Yet despite impressing many with his dominant aerial displays and keen sense of positioning, Ford believes there is plenty more to come from him in the coming months.

“I think I’ve been up and down. I’ve been trying to put my best performances in, 100%, but I haven’t been too pleased, really. I thought I would’ve got at least one or two goals, but

also, I think I’ve had a couple of half-decent games - in the other ones, I’ve just been pretty poor, (made) a few mistakes. But I’m nowhere near fit,” the defender candidly admitted.

His return in earnest to the Allotment fold has bolstered an already strong defence, but the centre-back, with tongue firmly in cheek, intimated that he was confident of nailing down a starting berth. “Sorry, who?” he replied, when asked about ex-Blakelaw compatriot Stephen Little. “I think it’s between myself and Stona. That’s it really! The rest are just fringe players. I think we’d probably get Latts in there before them two (Little and Simon Wilthew). It’s best to be honest!” Under duress, Glenn later retracted some of his words via Twitter, insisting that Stephen is “a good mate and a top lad. It’ll be a great addition to have him back.”

It may not be their primary focus, but even defenders like to get on the scoresheet. And,

though he hasn’t troubled the net in the opening fixtures, Fordy is confident that he will top the back four’s scoring charts ahead of player-manager Stoneman - even if others conspire against him. “I think it’s in the bag, to be honest. I think he has a word with Dummett before the game about these big, deep balls into the back post, which I don’t enjoy one bit, but I think I’ll beat him, no problem at all. In the bag!”

At the other end, Ford played his part in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Whickham, but the defender was gutted at having let a potential clean sheet slip through his grasp. “Very, very disappointed with the last goal. I think we just lost concentration. It was a bit of a mix-up in the back four, and that’s a bit unusual for us.” The result was not always assured, but the former South Shields man believed that they were good value for the victory. “As soon as they went down to ten, we just thought it was game over, really. I think if the

third goal hadn’t went in...but it was a fully deserved win.”

Reaching what may be his footballing prime, Ford has linked up once again with a side gunning for Division One - and he believes it could be Allotment’s year, providing certain requirements are met. “Promotion? I think we’ll be up there. I think if we keep everyone fit, bring the likes of Hendy in, I think that’s massive. I also think that if Dorma gets on the scoresheet every other

game or so, I we’ve got a massive chance. But we’ve got to keep that strength down the middle. I think if you keep the likes of Stona and myself, hopefully, in there, and Dunny - and Latts has done well - I think we’ve got a chance. But Reidy’s the key, and if we keep that spine right, we’ve got a really good chance.”

This season, Glenn is relishing such a challenge - and, no doubt, the prospect of a Sunday lie-in.

Allotment ‘A’ 3 Chopwell 6

Despite playing the majority of the

second half with an extra man, West Allotment Celtic ‘A’ went down to Chopwell by six goals to three.

The hosts started brightly at Churchill Playing Fields, as Matt Slater put Allotment ahead after just one minute. However, the vastly experienced visitors hit back almost instantly, with James Corney unfortunately putting the ball into his own net six minutes later, and Chopwell had turned the deficit around by the game’s tenth minute.

The score remained tight up to half-time, but Chopwell grabbed a third soon after the restart. The away side were soon reduced to ten men after their winger saw red for dissent - and Celtic briefly threatened to get back into it.

James Walker’s tidy finish after good work from Eamon Nugent-Doyle brought it back to 3-2, but Andrew Smith restored Chopwell’s advantage. Another good finish from Walker set up a tense finale, but ‘keeping errors and defensive lapses allowed the visitors to cruise to a 6-3 victory.

Progress was made in the NFA Minor Cup at the expense of Tyne Boys’ Club. Williams and Stoneman were on target in a 2-1 win that was the first step on a road that eventually ended at the semi-final stage.

1971Allotment’s mediocre start to the season

continued with a 2-0 reverse away to Percy Main Amateurs. The result meant that the team had

managed just one win in the opening four league fixtures.

1985

1993Table-topping Bedlington Terriers were the visitors to Backworth

Welfare for a FA Vase tie. John Fitzpatrick put Celtic ahead after just four minutes, but Kevin Harmison levelled matters from the

penalty spot, just beyond the diving Dave Marshall. Unfazed by the setback, Steve Atkinson and Gary Johnson were quickly in gear after the restart and they combined well to set up Michael Storey to fire

Celtic into a two-goal lead. Chilton soon added a third and Allotment totally muzzled the Terriers when Storey notched his second of the

afternoon to give a final scoreline of 4-1.

Allotment invited Walker Ledwood to Hillheads and proceeded to hand out a 7-0 thrashing to the hapless visitors. Anthony Woodhouse grabbed a hat-trick and the other goals came courtesy of Dave Malone, Gavin Hemsley, John Fitzpatrick and a Walker defender! Whilst the goals were flowing at one end, the Allotment defence was equally pleased to record a third successive clean-sheet.

AS FAR as Northern League homes are

concerned, few offer more comfort than Whitley Park. And yet, despite the pristine pitch and the familiar surroundings, Allotment still made hard work of their first home win against Stokesley, having to score twice in the final ten minutes of the game. Comfortable it was not. With high flyers Whickham dropping in on Friday night, things weren’t expected to get any cosier. The Home Guard had spent most of this season on the road, but plundered ten points on their march around the north. From the outset, there was little sign of the full-scale assault that had been anticipated of the visitors. Instead, Celtic drew first blood via a scrambled Dean Lee goal - his first of the season. The opposition’s only potent volley was a verbal one, aimed towards the referee - and it backfired disastrously. Fitzpatrick felt he was fouled, and, when the free kick was not forthcoming, proceeded to swear at the referee. The official, presiding over his first Northern League game, rightly gave him his marching orders. The cause

and effect brigade were soon out in force, insisting that X wouldn’t have happened if Y had been different. Ultimately, their appeals, though vociferous, were futile and arguably misguided; the challenge from Pendlebury was not enough to force the rangy forward to the deck - and certainly didn’t warrant the profanity-laden response. Perhaps if Whickham had had a fair play marshal like David Dormand in their ranks, they would have continued to play with a full complement. To the surprise of many, Whickham played better football when reduced to ten men - in part down to their redoubled efforts, but also because Allotment allowed them to do so. But, when the away side began to genuinely probe Chris Bannon’s goal, Allotment doubled their lead. Whickham ‘keeper John Mordey claimed an unwitting assist, deflecting Dormand’s strike back off his thigh and into the net. It wasn’t the prettiest - the goal or the sheepish celebration - but they all count. Douglas climbed off the bench to grab a third as Allotment coasted to victory, although Bannon will be distraught at letting a late consolation slip through his legs

at the death. Nevertheless, it was a much improved performance from Celtic - particularly from Dean Lee. Quiet in the opening fixtures, the winger looked to be enjoying himself again on the left, running at the defence whenever possible and doggedly doubling back when required. As expected, much of the talk turned back to the officiating. One voice suggested the debutant referee wasn’t “up to the standard” after just ninety minutes of action. Few should take notice - according to the terraces, there’s no such thing as a good referee, only varying shades of poor. In honesty, the new man in black had a decent first game with little to do, marred in many eyes by his upholding of the laws of the game in one instance. Out in the middle, you’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. Sometimes, there’s just no pleasing the cast of Dad’s Army! More important to Celtic, of course, was the result - a solid victory against one of the early frontrunners. The war machine rolls on.

Only have Morgan today, and we visit Saltwell Park and have a lovely day. In the evening, have the pleasure of the bloodhound’s company when I am match assessor at Middlesbrough U21 v Newcastle Utd U21. How the game ended 4 – 3 to Middlesbrough I will never know; Middlesbrough should have won by seven or eight goals. What is going on at Newcastle? The first team is poor and this was just as bad.

A letter arrives from Geoff Siddle (Willington Secretary) apologising for the foul mouthed yob’s behaviour - this I believe to be a very nice gesture. Somehow we manage to beat Stokesley 3 – 2 to earn the points today.

Attend the local derby Bedlington v Ashington as match assessor and the referee has a really good game.

Complete my report and have a really peaceful day due to Barbara and the bloodhound going to Liverpool with Eddie, who was fourth official at today’s Capital One cup game.

Have Morgan all day and, apart from one tantrum, she’s really good. Take Morgan out while Barbara recovers from yesterday’s trip to Liverpool. More tired than a hangover - mind you, she probably has a hangover after putting up with the bloodhound for 12 hours. Go and watch our “A” team play and I am absolutely gobsmacked when the referee says we can’t use a yellow/blue ball as we haven’t reached the month of November. I am also appalled at the language used by the visitors’ coach during the game. Am I getting too old or am I just an old fuddy duddy?

No Morgan today, so I am dragged off to Newcastle. Fed up with having to travel around the coast on the Metro to Newcastle. Normal service resumes on Saturday after a one month closure and it can’t come quick enough. Speak to manager at John Lewis about my ongoing problem with Sony after buying a new television and I can’t speak highly enough of John Lewis, superb customer service.

Morgan, who is only five, asks me why I am taking tablets (Diabetic) today. Try and explain to Morgan that they help your blood sugar levels; to cut the story short, she asks if I will die if I don’t take the tablets and I tell her that I will and I will be really sad if I don’t see her grow up, so that is why I am taking the tablets. Morgan replies, “You can’t be sad if you are dead.” How does a five year old come out with that statement? What are they teaching them at school nowadays? Anyway, on to happier times, and we earn a good three points with a 3 – 1 win over Whickham. Excellent crowd and really good to see Leo Osborn (League Chaplain) at the game tonight. Friday night games are really worth the effort.
