エドワード・ルシェは、1962から 1978年にかけて、自らデザインした 18点の本を自費出版しました。発行部数の少ないこれらの本は、いずれもコンセプチュアル・アートと写真集の歴史における影響力のある作品となっています。初期作品のなかでも最も有名なのが、1000部の限定の本書。ロサンゼルスのサンセット大通り沿いの左右の全ての建物を客観的に写真撮影し、アコーディオン式のパノラマページで見せた写真集です。イルフォード FP-4というモノクロ・フィルムを使用し、モータードライブ付きニコン F2を三脚で固定して撮影が行われたといわれます。12年前に出版された木村荘八『銀座界隈』の、銀座の道路を写した別冊写真集と、ほぼ同時代日米で全く同じレイアウトが見られます。

チャップリン(Sir Charles "Charlie" Spencer Chaplin, 1889-1977)がロンドンの劇団に所属していた時代の貴重な写真です（左から 3番目がチャップリン）。チャップリンは、両親の離婚と病気により貧しい幼少時代を送っていました。チャップリンが５歳の時、女優・歌手として女手ひとつで家計を支えていた母が舞台で突然歌えなくなり、母の代わりに歌を披露し、拍手喝采をあびたのがチャップリンの初舞台と言われています。その後 1898 年にエイト・ランカシャー・ラッヅ座(The Eight Lancashire Lads)に入団し、12月 26

日にプロとしての初舞台を踏み、翌年にはパントマイム劇のロンドン公演に出演して好評を博しました。1903年 7月 16日にシャーロックホームズのビルを演じ、1908年 2月には兄の誘いでイギリスの劇団フレッド・カルノーの一座(Fred Karno's Troupe)に入団し、一躍看板俳優の座を得ました。この一座ではフランスやアメリカへ海外巡業も行い活躍していました。巡業先のアメリカで主演した寸劇が話題となり、1913年の 3月、チャップリンはキーストーン社と契約を交わし、翌 14年に「成功争ひ」(Making a Living)

で映画デビューを果たしました。その後何度か配給会社を変えながらも、後世に残る映画作品を次々と生み出しました。

ディキンズ(1838-1915)は、1863年に医師として来日し、横浜の海軍病院で外科医として勤めていました。イギリスに帰国後、法廷弁護士となり、横浜の領事裁判所で働くために再び来日します。ディキンズは日本語の勉強に熱心に取り組み、日本の物語を翻訳した著作を出版しています。本書はディキンズの代表作で、1876 年にニューヨークで、1880 年にはロンドンで新版が出されています。横浜で出された 1875年の初版は大変希少です。

道化師や踊り子は多くの画家が好んで描いた主題ですが、ルオーは特に深い共感をもって、華やかな表舞台にいる陽気な道化師より、静かにたたずむ人々の姿を描きました。文章と文字もルオーによるもので、テリアードの出版による最初の画家本となりましが、ルオー作品の所有権についてはアンブロワーズ・ヴォラールとの関係があり、ルオー作品で実現したのはこの『気晴らし』のみとなりました。カラーグラビア印刷による 15図版が入った、1200部限定の 89 番目のコピーです。

(YSD-6586) サルトルの「汚れた手」("Les Mains Sales")第２場の自筆草稿 24枚です。（うち１枚は両面に書かれています。）青色のペンと青色の色鉛筆で書かれています。青色の色鉛筆で"Les Mains Sales, 2ème tab"（汚れた手、第２場）と書かれた 元々のノートの表紙も挟まれています。サルトルにしては珍しく、本草稿はほとんどが良質のカナダ製の紙に書かれています。この紙は、サルトルが恋人のドロレス・バネッティ(Dolores Vanetti)と過ごしていた 1946年のカナダでの巡業講演の際に購入されたものである可能性があります。（サルトルはバネッティにこの作品を献呈しています。）本作品は 1947年の下旬から 1948年の初旬に執筆され、同年 4月 2日にアントワーヌ劇場にて初演が上演されました。

¥3,780,000 For the 1949 production of Macbeth (Act III Scene IV) (YSD-11249) 1949年、イギリスのストラットフォードにあるシェイクスピア・メモリアル・シアターにおいて上演された舞台「マクベス」のデザイン画です。内容は、マクベスをはじめ様々な配役の舞台衣装１７点と、第三幕シーン４の舞台装置１点のデザイン画で、鉛筆画に水彩で彩色されており、各パーツの説明も詳細に記載されています。演出：アンソニー・クェイル、出演：ゴッドフリー・テール、ダイアナ・ウィナードなど著名な配役による舞台の秘蔵資料です。エドワード・アンソニー・クレイグ(1905－98)は、1928 年以降は主に Edward Carrick と名乗りました。
