“Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.”

When Audry Hepburn made this famous quote in the 1960’s, it was all about distinctive design and the elegant style that she was so widely identified with. As Jaguar enthusiasts, we are no strangers to distinctive designs and elegance, traits that have always distinguished our Cats from “the rest of the pack”. Like Audrey, our Jaguars exude beauty and elegance that never fades while providing a spirited means of getting around. This is the unique heritage that each of us as members of JOCO are helping to carry on while having lots of fun doing so.

Last month’s return of the the legendary “JOCO Gumball Rallye” was lots of fun. It took us down and around the Willamette Valley through areas both on and off the beaten track including a crossing on one of Oregon’s famous covered bridges. A big Cat’s Meow to Glen Enright for investing a lot of time and energy to get us down so many different roads.

JOCO’s event on May 10th takes us in a different direction, this time down Memory Lane for an encounter with decades of classic cars and rare aeroplanes at WAAAM in Hood River. While finalizing this event a few weeks ago at WAAAM, our roving reporter, Ouda Focus, captured yours truly next to an elegant 1925 Locomobile auto (which competed against Rolls Royce) overshadowed by a 1928 Boeing commercial airliner designed in1925 with an open air cockpit....both are pristine examples of what you’re going to see. Check our Calendar of Events for details and Rally Information. And, keep in mind that unlike what would have happened in the day of vintage aircraft, weather need not ground our adventure as WAAAM is a totally indoor museum. Besides, it seldom rains in May so prepare for take-off.

Speaking of take-offs, our year has taken off with 5 new members through April for JOCO which is a good start. Let’s keep the throttle open wide as building our membership base will keep our Club strong. With each of us bringing in just one new member this year, whether that membership is for an individual or business, we all stand to benefit.

Our new and improved JOCO Membership Application is now posted on the website under

Contacts and Membership - check it out by clicking on the red link under JOCO Membership to print off a copy for your prospective new member. It’s an easy form to complete and all information on it is up-to-date, per recent approval of your Board.

With May upon us, we’re heading into “our Season” when cars bloom and the road is there to be cultivated. Of course, we Cat Fanciers are fussy and would never head out without insuring peak performance and stately appearance. To that end, please support our Cat Fancier advertising partners - they support us with offerings that are purrrfect for our cars.

In 1979, the Series III XJ6 was introduced, another Jaguar considered timeless in its beauty and elegance. What is especially significant about this model was that it was actually styled by Carrozzeria Pininfarina in Italy making it the first Jaguar ever designed with input from outside Coventry. Like its predecessors and successors, the Series III embodies beauty that never fades. It is one more example of what all of us in JOCO are fortunate enought to get to share and enjoy with our own Jaguars and fellow Club members. And that is a beautiful thing!

Cheerio.

Owing to an >ahem< (Editorial) misprint, the event began a half hour earlier than intended. (“Sorry about that, Chief,” he says

channeling his inner Agent 87 Maxwell Smart…fortunately or unfortunately, this was not the only SNAFU for the event, but more on that later – ed.). Rick Martin and co-pilot Carl Foleen were first to arrive. Followed shortly by Mike Lama, Tod Tolan (with his lovely daughter GraceAnn assuming the pilot’s “chores”), the lot continued to fill (if memory serves) by our Rallye Master Glen Enright, Jim and Ellen Quine, the illustrious Jim Rathbun, Elaine Frank-Myers (with copilot Wynne Wakkila), Fred and Bonnie Nuttall, Cam Sheahan and Carolyn Arnquist, and surprise entrants Bob & Jean Bennett (who happened to need a few extra “fun miles” on their beautiful XJS before returning to Bend.

The Burger King employees and a few customers seemed to enjoy the gathering in their parking lot – not only because a number of participants needed coffee or hot chocolate (at a minimum) or, in some cases,

breakfast, but also to zoom over to photograph one or more of the cars.

Shortly after 10 AM, route instruction sheets were handed out, and “goodie bags” were distributed. The “swag bags” were numbered, and that indicated the starting position of the entrant who picked up the nifty gifties. Entrants were also instructed to write a number between one and twenty to be the tie-breaker if identical scores were achieved. Only the Rallye Master knew the number. I was at “20” but after a brief discussion we went with “lucky 7” for our official guess. (Wonder how close we were...)

Cars were started at one-minute intervals, and the “gimmick rallye” portion of the contest kicked in almost immediately. The first question was “What is the Wilsonville High School Mascot?” (If memory serves it is the Spartan.) WOW! Not even out of town – let alone fully caffeinated – and already having to put on our Deerstalkers and slip into “Sherlock Holmes mode.” (Calabash pipes are, of course, optional since the cars are already equipped with their own exhaust pipes emitting various fumes and gasses.)

After a delightful romp thru the country side in the first section, we had a “bunching” of

capitol. Since this type of rallye tasks the participants with a certain amount of attentiveness, I am sure that other participants were as astonished as we were to see a Dromedary camel grazing in a fenced yards just a little off the highway. Not something one would expect out on a pleasant drive on a weekend … . In case you were wondering: No, there was not a large watercraft 300 cubits by 80 cubits by 40 cubits anywhere around. We looked.

The last stage of the rallye took us to the north end of the Wheatland Ferry so the route could proceed through Dallas, Dayton, Newberg, and eventually back to the starting point in Wilsonville… . Except for one small glitch. The ferry was closed. There were plenty of signs saying the ferry was closed. But there were also plenty of cars coming from the ferry landing. Plus the gate wasn’t closed or locked. Several of us drove

cars at the northern landing of the Canby Ferry. Of course it began raining just as the ferry was getting to the landing, so it seemed a better idea to get pictures of the cars on the ferry rather than in line waiting.

One of the “second-stage” challenge questions for the Canby area involved one of the “pioneer cemeteries.” First step: Find a particular marker (it was also a shame to notice that vandals had “tipped” some of the markers and generally done other damage to the graveyard). Second step: Try to read the inscription in a hurry and answer the question then get underway and on the road again.

Not sure how anyone would do this type of rallye alone (like with no navigator) it is challenge enough to do with two people handling the diving and keeping track of the route, questions, mile markers and so on.

We “rallyed” (this is a euphemism for “spirited driving” on the part of the person in the left seat. – ed.) onward, the route taking us on some fun roads out in the Molalla, Monitor, Mt. Angel area and onward toward the state

past the gate to the landing. The river didn’t look particularly high or fast, and we had crossed the Canby ferry further upstream earlier in the day. But there was the ferry, stuck/docked/beached/whatever at the southern ramp. Not moving. No activity aboard.

So whaddyado when the ferry is, in fact, not running?

Some intrepid teams backtracked to the south ramp of the ferry, zeroed their trip meters, and proceeded to finish the entire third (or fourth – depending on how you count it) section. Those teams arrived a little late for lunch, since the bulk of rallyists surrendered to the expedient of a quick return to throw the morning’s coffee overboard and then get a satisfying lunch on order.

Glen Enright collected the answer sheets, tallied the scores, and the team of Carolyn Arnquist and Cam Sheahan had captured the coveted Gumball trophy (again - repeating a win in 1987). The permanent trophy will now carry a commemorative plaque with their names and the date of their second triumph, and

a smaller trophy is their permanent keepsake signifying this “unprecedented achievement.” The tradition will continue when Cam and Carolyn can devise the next Gumball Rallye and present the trophy to their triumphant successors. Info from the Jaguar Journal

Jaguar has announced it will be enhancing its research and product development on future vehicle infotainment technologies through a new

collaboration with Intel and the opening of a new Technology R & D Center right here in Portland.

This new research facility will be responsible for collaborative work with a number of technology partners, all of which is to advance Jaguar’s ambitions to deliver the best in-car infotainment experience. Portland was chosen for its proximity to West Coast technology hubs in Seattle and Silicon Valley.

GettinG DusteD Car dusters are great to remove surface dust from

your car between washes, and to remove the majority of dust before you use your detailer spray and micro fiber cloths. The important thing to remember is to use them for what they were designed for: removing light surface dust. Start at the top of the car and use long gentle strokes. Don’t bear down or scrub hard. The dusters cotton threads are treated with wax which attracts dust and traps it. The dirtier it gets the better it works. Well, up to a point. They do last for years with regular use but eventually become really black and less effective. Then it’s time to throw it away and buy a new one. I tried washing one but that takes the wax out as well as the dirt so again it is less effective. One

TWO COOl ideAS / CAr CAre TipS

more thing. Keep your duster off the ground and in it’s case when not in use. They easily pick up bark and dirt from the ground and transfer it to your car to scratch the paint.

Another important tip:“Just cool your jets pal” or maybe it’s your rotors...

This tip is about cleaning your cars wheels. It is important that your wheels and especially your brake rotors are cool to the touch when you clean them. Cold water can warp hot brake rotors and even damage some wheels. Also if your wheels are hot the cleaner can bake right onto the surface and be difficult to remove. If you’ve been out for a drive, resist that temptation to clean the car up right away and wait at least an hour before you start.
