KEY CLICKS
Steven Sullivan, KE5VSW, reports that son
Joshua, age 12, passed his GMDSS Radio
Operator License (Element 7) with a 97%,
“the same score I passed that test with in
2011,” says Steven.
“;My guess is he was holding back, not
wanting to show up his old man,” adds Ste-
ven.
This should make Joshua the youngest
GMDSS Radio Operator/Maintainer, with ship
RADAR endorsement, in the country, al-
though this has not been confirmed. This
would take that title from his sister Rebekah,
who passed her last FCC exam (Element 7) in
May at age 14.
“I don’t think I was ever in the running to
be the youngest GMDSS Radio Operator/
Maintainer,” said Steven, “maybe ‘best
beard.’”
Three of the children have been accepted
as Youth Members in the Society of Broad-
cast Engineers, which waived the rules for
Joshua and he is now the youngest member
of the SBE in their 48 year history. There are
a lot of hams in SBE; and with an Extra
Class ham ticket and two years experience in
radio broadcasting or TV they grant the
holder an entry level certification (Certified
Broadcast Technologist/CBT) without taking
the exam.
Caleb Sullivan, a younger brother to
Joshua, will be ready to take this Element 7
exam sometime in November.
He won’t have his GMDSS Maintainer or
Radar Endorsement until later after he passes
his hamn Extra test next year. Once Caleb
passes his Element 7 exam in November, he
ought to be the youngest GMDSS Radio Op-
erator in the U.S.
Mike KI5M and Andrea Hankins proc-
tored the test for Joshua on Sept. 6.
New Accomplishment
for Joshua Sullivan
Seven years to the day that Hurricane Katrina
smashed into New Orleans, Hurricane Isaac
came calling. But instead of making landfall
right at New Orleans like Katrina (a Category
3 storm) did on August 28, 2005, Isaac
veered slightly to the west of the city.
Through it all, hams at WX4NHC--the
Amateur Radio station at the National Hurri-
cane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida--and
those supporting the Hurricane Watch Net
(HWN) and the VoIP Hurricane Net, along
with various nets within the ARRL's Delta
Division, relayed reports to their served
agencies on Isaac's progress and the damage
the storm created in its wake.

Sean P. Smith, KG4WSS, of Falls Church, Virginia, was
killed when the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked
on September 11. He was 34. Smith was one of four Americans,
including Chris Stevens -- the US Ambassador to Libya -- who
was killed in the attack.
Smith -- a native of San Diego -- enlisted in the Air Force in
1995 at age 17. He served six years as a ground radio mainte-
nance specialist, including a deployment to Oman, before leav-
ing the service in 2002 as a staff sergeant. He was awarded the
Air Force Commendation Medal. Smith, who had worked at the
State Department for 10 years, was in Libya on a temporary
assignment when he was killed; Before his temporary assign-
ment to Benghazi, Smith served for the State Department in
Brussels, Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal and The Hague.
“Sean was a friend of mine, and while he was not a very ac-
tive operator he was an extremely skilled electronic technician,”
James Kirkham, W4HFK, told the ARRL. “He was instrumental
in getting me back into the hobby after a 10 year hiatus.”
Smith was well known in the online gaming community as
an avid participant of the space fantasy game EVE Online,
where he was known as “Vile Rat,” one of the leaders of a gam-
ers’ alliance and renowned for his diplomatic skill in the multi-
player space warfare simulation.
“If you play this stupid game, you may not realize it, but you
play in a galaxy created in large part by Vile Rat’s talent as a
diplomat,” said Smith’s friend Alex Gianturco, in a tribute
posted on his website. No one focused as relentlessly on using
diplomacy as a strategic tool as VR.” Gianturco wrote that
Smith had been under fire be-
fore, when he was posted to
Baghdad. When that occurred,
he usually broke off his mes-
saging. “We’d freak out and
he’d come back okay after a
bit,” Gianturco wrote. “But
Tuesday night, after reporting
‘GUNFIRE,’ he disconnected
and never returned.” A few
hours earlier that evening, Smith posted the following:
“assuming we don’t die tonight. We saw one of our ‘police’ that
guard the compound taking pictures.”
Smith is survived by his wife, Heather, and two young chil-
dren, Samantha and Nathan. “They will grow up being proud of
the service their father gave to our country, service that took him
from Pretoria to Baghdad, and finally to Benghazi,” Secretary of
State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement. – Thanks to

HamEXPO! Is October 6—make plans now.
In May 1914, Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW -- a leading
inventor and industrialist of Hartford, Connecticut --
founded the American Radio Relay League, together with
Clarence Tuska, 1WD, the secretary of The Radio Club of
Hartford. Today, the ARRL serves more than 158,000
members, mostly
licensed radio
amateurs, in the US
and around the
world.
Maxim tinkered
with internal
combustion engines
before contacting
the Pope
Manufacturing
Company about the possibility of manufacturing a gasoline-
powered automobile. Albert Augustus Pope hired Maxim to
run his Motor Vehicle Division. In 1899, with Maxim at the
controls, the Pope
Columbia, a gasoline-
powered automobile, won
the first closed-circuit
automobile race in the US at
Branford, Connecticut.
Columbia later began
manufacturing an electric
automobile, another area of
Maxim’s expertise.
