The Home Page is divided into two sections – Find and Sources:

Find Find gives home page access to common search tasks in displayed fields.From the Tool Bar (at top), specifically tailored search forms are available for each content type, e.g. Cases, Legislation.TIP: Hover your mouse over the fields to see search examples.Click on to run the search.

Sources Sources give direct access to a selected publication via the Search | Browse links.

Return to Home Page:At any point, click on our logo in the top left corner to return to the Home Page.

Terms and Connectors

Connector Example Explanation

Finds documents containing any of the terms connected by or.

Search Terms “Search Terms” are individual words or phrases. Use Connectors to determine the relationships between search terms, e.g., surveyor and negligen!. See below for popular connectors.

Phrases LexisNexis® NZ Online will search for consecutive words without quotation marks as an exact phrase, e.g., duty of care.

Truncation (!) Use ! to replace any number of letters after a word root (e.g., litigat! finds litigation, litigate, litigator).

By default, General Search finds results in all your subscribed sources.Alternatively, combine multiple content types by ticking the boxes, e.g., Case Law and Commentary.Use General Search to search in an unfamiliar area of law or to look for something highly specific.See our “Terms and Connectors” page for tips on constructing your search.

Search by case name Enter the party names connected by and (unless they are identical), e.g. Bryson and Three Foot Six; Rose v Rose.Search Assist New will give search suggestions taken from NZLR and LinxPlus case titles.*

*Note: you will need a subscription to these sources to access all of the suggested cases/digests.

Search by terms Construct your search using terms and connectors, e.g. independent contractor w/s film.

Search by legislation cited (Use Search Terms) Enter [legislation title] w/s [section number] or s[section number, repeat]. e.g., companies act 1993 w/s 131 or s131.

Browsing via the Legislation Home Page Click on the Legislation Home Page New link at left of the Legislation page. Use the alphabetical index to locate the Act/Regulation. From the table of contents, click on the desired provision.LexisNexis® NZ Online will display a set provision range including the chosen section/regulation in the document view, e.g., ss 131-138 of the Companies Act 1993. To print only one section, see our “Downloading” page on printing just a selection of text.

SearchingUse Legislation Title. Enter the Act name, e.g., care of children act 2004. Search Assist New will give some helpful suggestions.Enter the section number Sec/Reg/Rule, e.g., 60.

Compendium (Cases and Commentary)Available via a link at the end of each provision, the Compendium (Cases and Commentary) lists a selection of cases and commentary which refers to that provision.

Browsing Click on the Browse link at the top left of the Commentary page.Click on the selected source to browse.Click on beside any heading to view the contents within. Continue opening the headings until you locate the required information.TIP: Browse to view your source like a book.

SearchingBy Form Title – enter the name of the form/precedent in Form Title.TIP: Keep this general and connect the key terms with AND for flexibility, e.g. family and trust.By Search Terms – enter your query in Search Terms to search across the full text of the publication beyond form titles.

Explore by Topic

Topic Locator is a simple but powerful search tool to locate documents by topic. Use the Explore by Topic tab:• To focus your search on a specific topic; or• To broaden your search over an entire subject to

which multiple topics may be related.

1. Select the topics for your search – use the Add Topics panel to select. View topics in three different ways:

• From a hierarchical list (Hierarchy) – click on or Expand All to see sub-topics.

• By performing a search for topics (Search topics).

• From an alphabetical list (A – Z topics).TIP: Click on beside topics for Topic scope notes.

2. Specify the document-to-topic relationships. • ANY of these topics will find documents classified as any of the selected topics. • EVERY ONE of these topics will find documents classified as all of the selected topics

Downloading

There are various downloading options available

Printing To print the full document, i.e. what is accessible on your screen if you scroll down:• Click on the Print icon to the top right of the screen• The Print Window settings are ready to print the current, full document• Select any preferred options such as hide annotations, font, note etc.• Click Print to print immediately, or select Print Preview to view the file

To print just a selection of text, e.g. a section of an Act: • Highlight the text you want to print• Use Ctrl+P or File, Print to open your Printer Dialogue Box• Choose the Selection option in the Page Range Box before hitting Print

Emailing To email the full document, e.g. an entire judgment:• Click on the email icon at the top right of the screen• Enter the email address you wish to send the document to• Select any preferred options such as file format, note etc.• Click the send button
