w360|HERE’S TO YOUR Health!“IT CAME. WE FOUGHT. I CONQUERED” - Surviving Prostate Cancer

Contact us for more information on our DRL Oncology line of products or to place orders. Our pharmacist would be happy to speak with you.

“The prostate is something that attacks that central part of the male body that men are very preoccupied with. Somehow, any disorder there means your life is over, you can’t be a man anymore, you are now something less,” Belafonte explained at a benefit for the Hoag Cancer Center in California, adding that he hoped to change that perception. “If you’re going to have [prostate cancer], you’re going to have it. It’s what you do about it that makes the difference - how you conduct your life.” Below are snippets of Belafante’s discussion on different aspects of the journey as told to OncoLink magazine.

...on the Examination: “You know, I have been through the treatment and I did not find it embarrassing. There are many reasons men don’t seek out the diagnosis. First off, there is a definite feeling of homophobia, especially in the African American community. A feeling of: ‘no doctor is going to penetrate my rectum with his finger.’ I have had many prostate examinations and I tell people wherever I go that at the completion of my medical evaluation, not one doctor has yet asked me for my phone number.”

...on Incontinence: “Even in the world of incontinence, you can always do things to improve it. There are exercises that really work. Plus, this is a function of age too. As men and women get older many of them have incontinence anyway. When you measure the level of discomfort that incontinence adds to your life and weigh that against survival and life itself, it seems too insignificant.”

...on Impotence: “The same goes for impotence. That comes with age too. You can still have a great deal of joy and sexual intimacy with your partner. Plus, there are nerve bundle sparing surgeries that are being offered today that reduce your chances of this side effect of surgery.”

...on Making the Complex Medical Decisions: “All the questions come flying at you,” says Belafonte. “First you’re overwhelmed. Then you ask, ‘Why? Where did it come from?’ Then the fear sets in. But then you know you’ve got to investigate your options and start managing your illness. And very, very quickly you get on with the business of a cure. ...my family was there for support but my medical decisions were made by me in conjunction with the advice I got from the doctors. I had many consultations and listened very hard to all sides and made the best decision for me—one that fit my life, life style, and values.”

HARRY BELAFONTE: Actor | Activist | SongwriterPerhaps best known for the “Banana Boat” song with its famous ‘Day O’ refrain.Born in Harlem to Caribbean parents; lived in Jamaica (his mother’s birthplace) from age 8 - 15.‘Survivor’, was added to his resume after he fought and beat prostate cancer in 1996. Upon diagnosis he felt sorry for himself for about 30 seconds before he rolled up his sleeves and got to work, eventually undergoing a radical prostatectomy. He openly admits to suffering urinary incontinence post-surgery which he said he conquered with kegel exercises in a year.

w360|Meducation: “As The Worm Turns”

If you are wondering about the possibility of whether or not you have worms, ask yourself these questions: Have you ever eaten undercooked meat? Dairy? Beef from a fast food restaurant? How about raw food such as a salad that you did not clean yourself? Have you ever had sushi without the wasabi? Ever had raw eggs? Ever had cooked eggs but ate or served from the cooking utensil that still had undercooked egg remnants on it? Do you eat pork, which like chicken and their eggs are a huge parasite carrier? The same can be said for ground beef. Have you ever eaten at a buffet? Have you ever ingested dirt? Does your child, or have you, ever attended day care? Did you suck your thumb as a child? Do you own a dog or a cat? Ever played with a kitten or puppy that hadn’t been ‘wormed’? Changed diapers, or washed someone else’s rear end without washing your hands? Do you have a ferocious appetite, or always just never seem to get enough to eat? Have you ever had digestive problems? Circulation problems? How many times have you eaten a meal without properly washing your hands? Did you even wash your hands? Do you eat while driving at the same time? The more “yesses” you answer to these questions, the higher the probability that you have some ‘bread snatchers’ living within you.

Many people don’t feel sick from the worms in them and they tend to just live with them, while others have “mild symptoms”. Parasites love the liver and intestines, and the latter is usually the number one organ where the majority may be found. However, they can live quite comfortably anywhere in the body, including the brain and eyes, causing great distress to the host. If you have chronic digestive complaints, have tried everything else, including elimination diets and know you are getting the proper nutrients, consider that you still stand much to gain from killing off the worms.

What is the proper way to treat worms? Well, worms have a life cycle. If you kill the adults but not the eggs, the eggs will grow into adults again. If you kill the eggs but not the adults, the adults will lay more eggs, thus you have a vicious cycle. Source: http://thehealthcircle.blogspot.com/2007/12/dear-human-dont-forget-to-deworm.html

Both children and adults can be victims of parasitic helminth infections. Contact MDS to place orders for deworming medication - GSK Zentel - or to speak with our pharmacist for further information.

Samuel, 3, from Western Uganda, suffers from a distended stomach caused by intestinal worms. Because the worms suck vital nutrients from his body, he weighs only about 11 pounds.

w360 | Stay On Track SLIM DOWN BY STANDING STILL!

There are plenty of times during the day when you may find yourself standing around. Even though you are standing in one place, you don’t have to stand still. There are plenty of ways for you to move your body around and burn a few extra calories. Flatten Your Middle | Glute Squeeze: Firmly contract your glutes and thighs while standing upright and still. Hold for 10 seconds (remember to breathe!), then relax. Repeat 10 times. Flatten Your Middle | Ab Brace: While standing motionless, tighten your abdominal muscles as if you were anticipating a punch to the stomach. Hold for 10 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10 times. They’ll smooth out the appearance of a potbelly while toning and strengthening the abs. Strengthen Your Core | Standing Planks: Stand with your body angled toward a wall and your feet behind your hips. Lean forward, place your forearms on the wall - about shoulder-width apart - and walk your feet back as far as you can without lifting your heels. Press the forearms into the wall for 30-60 seconds. Do this 3 times. For perfect comfort and style when doing these slim down moves, visit Western Sports to purchase your favourite pair of Puma or Adidas sneaker brands.

w360|FINANCIAL FITNESS

It really doesn’t matter how you do it - whether you invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options, futures, precious metals, real estate, your own business, or any combination thereof. The objective is the same: to make investments that will generate cash flows for you in the future. Whether your goal is to send your kids to college or to retire on a yacht in the Mediterranean, investing is essential to getting you where you want to be. STOCKSCompanies that trade on the stock exchange (e.g. Jamaica Stock Exchange, New York Stock Exchange) need your money to help them grow and develop into sustainable businesses. Buying a stock represents ownership in such a company; it means you are buying a percentage of the business. Investors (like you) can put their money into publicly traded businesses with a view that the investment will be worth more than it was purchased for. You might be thinking it’s simpler and safer to just keep your money stored in the bank. That’s partly true, but not really your best move. While investing in the stock market involves some level of risk, it is also the investment vehicle that can offer the highest rate of returns. If you speak with an Investment Advisor and also do your own research, you will be taking calculated risk. And, the younger you are (meaning the longer you have until retirement), the better it is to invest in stocks, so your chances of making your money grow are greater.

MUTUAL FUNDSSome investors shy away from purchasing individual stocks to avoid assuming all the risk and decision making in determining which Companies to invest in. So for those investors, Mutual Funds and Unit Trusts were created. A mutual fund is a company that brings together money from many people and invests it in stocks, bonds or other assets. In other words, a mutual fund is like a basket, and that basket holds assets, like stocks.

When you buy a mutual fund, you purchase a piece of the fund or basket. You do not actually own any of the assets the mutual fund owns. But while you may not own the assets themselves, they are important, because the value of the fund is based on the value of the assets it holds. As the stocks and bonds within the fund increase in value, the fund increases in value. The converse is also true.

BONDSFor investors who are seeking a fixed income or cash flow, the bond market is the place for you. A bond is simply a type of loan taken out by companies. Investors, like you, lend a company money when they buy its bonds. In exchange, the company pays an interest “coupon” at predetermined intervals (usually annually or semi-annually) and returns the principal on the maturity date, thereby ending the loan. Unlike stocks, bonds can vary significantly based on the terms of the bond’s indenture, a legal document outlining the characteristics of the bond. Because each bond issue is different, it is important to understand the precise terms before investing.
