WALKING THE GREEN TALK

A MESSAGE FROM TIM BARRY,LMHA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

There has been a flurry of GREENactivity at LMHA. In addition to stepstaken to increase energy efficiency atAvenue Plaza, a number of otherGREEN initiatives have been underway.The following will highlight ourprogress to-date:

Energy Star Award - LMHA receivedthe 2010 Regional ENERGY STARAward for Excellence in AffordableHousing for our work at LibertyGreen and Avenue Plaza. This awardrecognizes our efforts in utilizingENERGY STAR measures to improveenergy efficiency in affordable housing,provide significant energy savings forresidents, and reduce the emission ofgreenhouse gases related to energyconsumption. LMHA is the only publichousing agency in Kentucky to receivethis prestigious award.

Mayor’s Kilowatt Crackdown - LMHAwas one of five finalists (out of 102entries) in the competition for the KilowattCup given in recognition of superiorachievement in energy management,overcoming obstacles and/oremphasizing low or no-cost practices.The energy savings measures that weretaken at Avenue Plaza resulted in anestimated annual gas and electric utilitysavings equivalent to over $16,000.

Avenue Plaza Resident Recycling PilotProgram – Resident participation atAvenue Plaza has been great! To-dateover five tons of recyclables have beendiverted from the landfill.

Liberty Green Community Center –Located at the southeast corner ofJefferson and Jackson Streets, oncecomplete the new Liberty GreenCommunity Center will have numerousenergy efficiency features includingpervious pavement and geo-thermalheating/cooling. Plans call for the newfacility to receive a LEED (Leadershipin Energy and Environmental Design)“Gold” rating. A ribbon-cuttingceremony will be held in July.

Beautification Project - Last, butcertainly not least, special thanks tothe staff who took part in the annualbeautification project at Avenue Plaza.I sincerely appreciate the time, energyand efforts of all those who participated– thanks for lending your GREEN thumbs!

These are just a few examples of howwe are continuing to “walk the GREENtalk” at LMHA. Let’s keep up the goodwork – our efforts can and will makea difference today and for futuregenerations!

GREEN NOTESHOW GREEN IS YOUR GARDEN?While sprucing up the yard or plantingyour garden, please consider the followingeco-friendly suggestions:

• Buy recycled-content gardeningequipment and tools, such asgarden hoses made from old tires orhand tools made with recycled plastic.

• Many plants and insects can serve asnon-toxic, natural deterrents to weedsand garden pests. Introduce ladybugsto eat aphids, plant marigolds to wardoff beetles, and look for quick-sproutingplants to block weed growth.

• Conserve water by using barrels tocollect rain water and use it to waterplants. Remember to water during thecooler parts of the day (early morningis best) to avoid evaporation.

• Cut the bottoms off plastic milk jugs oruse small paper bags to protect youngseedlings from frost, wind, heavy rainand roving animals. Remember torecycle the bags and jugs when theseedlings have grown.

TASTY TIDBITS

Rain did not dampen the spirits of CentralOffice employees who recently took part inthe annual beautification project at AvenuePlaza. With spades, shovels, and flowers inhand, the gardeners demonstrated LMHA’sdedication to GREEN efforts inside, as wellas outside Avenue Plaza by planting a varietyof flowers and other landscaping activities.The annual greening project is just anotherway in which LMHA continues its ongoingcommitment to the environment.
