HYMN NCH# 351 (11AM) “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry” Please use a hymnal or see the side bar to the right for lyrics. A READING FROM THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION Mark 1:16-20 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw the brothers Simon and Andrew casting their nets into the sea, since they fished by trade. Jesus said to them, “Follow me; I will make you fishers of humankind.” They immediately abandoned their nets and followed Jesus. Proceeding a little further along, Jesus saw the brothers James and John Bar – Zebedee. They too were in their boat, putting their nets in order. Immediately Jesus called them and they left their father Zebedee standing in the boat with the hired help, and went off in the company of Jesus.

“I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry”

John Ylvisaker, 1985

I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; I’ll be there in case you wander off and find where demons dwell. When you found the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living God, to whom you now belong. Should you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I'll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk 'till rising sun. In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I'll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I've begun. When the evening gently closes in, and you shut your weary eyes, I'll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise. I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.

In Our Prayers…

Welcome to our new members…

Epiphany at Peace and The Rainbow Fish Tree

This year marks the 17th anniversary of the Rainbow Fish Tree at Peace UCC.

In response to the outrageous murder of Mathew Shepherd, a gay university student from Idaho in October of 1998, Peace UCC was determined to show that the church would not tolerate such hatred. And so the first Rainbow Fish Tree took its place in the church sanctuary during Epiphany of that year. Each year since then, the church has used this powerful symbol to refute the many ways in which society has shown hate, disdain or neglect of marginalized people in the world. While grounded in moral outrage over the killing of a gay man, the tree has grown by its incorporation of concerns for those who suffer from mental illness, racism, ethnicity and gender. Each year the focus of the tree shifts as we recognize that God’s call for a peaceable kindom where none of God’s children are excluded or isolated is still a work in progress. And until that great work has been accomplished, we continue to hang ornaments on our tree representing our commitment to God’s work as the church.

Continued in the sidebar to the right

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Believing that each joy and/or concern expressed is indeed a prayer, after each expression, the worship leader will say: Loving God. And the people may respond: Hear our prayer.

PASTORAL PRAYER

LORD’S PRAYER

Heavenly Parent, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION AND REMEMBRANCE based on our Theological Assumptions

Minister: Come, Holy Spirit, and move among these elements assembled at this Table.

Many: Through this sacrament, transform our hurt into healing, our fear into faith, and death into life.

Minister: As this bread, sown in hills and valleys, is harvested, and now becomes one in the loaf,

Many: so we, scattered, diverse, separated and isolated from one another, hear your invitation to become one body around this Table, the center of our life together.

Liturgist: As this juice, grown in vineyards under the sun, fills the cup, may we be filled and refreshed by this meal,

Many: and strengthened to respond to your call to reach out in compassion to all living things. Minister: In sharing this meal we remember.

Many: We remember meals Jesus shared with friends and enemies, outcasts and

marginalized, fearful and earnest. Minister: He took the bread and, giving thanks, blessed it and broke it

and shared it with his guests, saying, “This is the bread of life, symbol of my sacrifice.”

Many: As we share the bread today, we eat it as those who seek to follow Jesus.

Liturgist: After the meal, Jesus took the cup. Giving thanks, he shared it with his guests, saying, “This cup symbolizes a new relationship with God, a relationship of partnership founded on grace.”

Many: As we share the cup, we seek to experience that grace in which Jesus lived fully.

All: Come, Holy Spirit, come. Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking that our eyes might be opened,

that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. Come, Holy Spirit, come.

CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION 8:30AM

The Congregation is invited to come forward by the center aisle, partake of the bread and juice, (gluten free bread and chalice available) and light a candle in prayer, and place an offering in the plates beside the table. You may also give electronically from the pews by scanning the QR code on the next page. Catch

the eye of a table host if you would prefer to be served at your seat.

RESPONSE "Peace Salaam Shalom" Source: Emma's Revolution

Please remain seated

PRAYER OF DEDICATION Edwin E. Beers in Touch Holiness One: Holy One, whose heart abounds with gifts,

Many: receive this offering as a sign of our intention to live surrounded by your mercy, inspired by your Spirit, open to the joy of your presence, hospitable to one another, and generous toward your world. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cont.

This year we will focus on how we might be the church in this work. We will use the UCC Statement of Faith in our worship throughout this time. The Statement of faith is not a test or a standard of authority in the United Church of Christ. It is a testimony that shares hope and challenge. As we familiarize ourselves once again to the Statement of Faith, I invite you to recall the words we repeat each Sunday after scripture is shared. May we be open to the wisdom we most need to hear. This year’s Sunday themes, incorporating our values and the UCC Statement of Faith, will be: You Call us into your Church: January 10: Inquisitiveness - to accept the cost and joy of disciple-ship January 17: Intentionality - to be your servants in the service of others January 24: Inspiration - to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil January 31: Inclusiveness - to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table February 7: Intimacy - to join him in his passion and victory

The Huebner Fund At Peace UCC we have a rich music program. Many members of the congregation participate in our music program offering their gifts and talents to help provide music for our worship services. During the course of the year, we have special musical selections at Christmas, Easter, and on Music Appreciation Sunday. The Huebner Fund is a designated fund to pay for musicians to participate in these special services. This fund is comprised of monetary donations. Anyone may contribute to this fund.

RAINBOW FISH TREE LITANY The Rainbow Fish Tree is an Epiphany tradition for our congregation. After

Christmas, the tree in our sanctuary is decorated with a bright Rainbow Fish. For several weeks during the season of Epiphany we focus on the barriers that

keep us from one another, and prevent us from living in the Beloved Community into which Jesus invites us. We process to the front during the

closing hymn and place ribbons on the Christmas Tree in symbolic commitment to a new world.
