Canal Building

The Canal Building is home to the Bachelor of Engineeringprograms in Aerospace Engineering, ArchitecturalConservation and Sustainability Engineering, and Sustainableand Renewable Energy Engineering. The building wasawarded a 5 Green Globes Rating, the highest rating awarded.Features include a 10 kWh array of 25 rooftop solar panels, agreen roof with native and drought resistant planting and anenergy display screen in the foyer.

3 Northern Nomad Tiny House

The Northern Nomad Tiny House is an innovative 220-square-foot house designed and built by Carleton architecture andengineering students as a fourth-year capstone project. Thetiny house is an energy and water autonomous house thataims to produce a net-zero carbon footprint. Features includeTesla lithium ion batteries, roof-mounted solar panels, a heatpump to provide heating and cooling to the interior spaces,and an atmospheric water generator to harvest water fromhumid air.

Health Science Building

The Health Sciences Building is designed to fosterinterdisciplinary collaboration between the neuroscience andhealth science programs. The building is designed to achievea rating of 4 Green Globes. Features include an open-conceptresearch laboratories, an animal vivarium, and a bird safetywindow film designed to deter birds from flying into reflectiveglass.

The Richcraft Building is located alongside the scenic RideauRiver and has been awarded a 4 Green Globes rating forbuilding sustainability. The building itself features anaccessible green roof with native and drought resistantplanting, highly efficient passive solar lighting through theuse of skylights and curtain wall systems, low-flow watersaving fixtures in washrooms and a spectacular three-storyliving green “bio” wall.

Green Globes is an internationally recognized, third-party, certification and building environmental designand management tool allowing for the evaluation ofproject management, energy consumption, site use,space and water optimization and waste management.

Residence CommonsResidence Commons is at the heart of residence life. It wasawarded a 4 Green Globes rating for building sustainability. Thebuilding includes features such as low-flow water savingfixtures, high-efficiency lighting with light controls and optimalamounts of natural light penetration. In addition, the buildingis home to an interactive energy display screen, showing liveenergy data.

The C-RISE HouseThe Carleton Research and Innovation in SustainableEnergy (C-RISE) is a two-storey solar-powered houseperched on a low hill at the north end of Carleton’s campus.The building uses solar thermal energy, seasonal thermalstorage, and provides a test bed for various innovativeconcepts with the aim of reducing overall energy demandsand greenhouse gas emissions in the Canadian residentialsector.

H.H.J. Nesbitt Biology Building

The H. H. J. Nesbitt Biology Building is made up of climate-controlled greenhouses that contain one of the finestcollections of plants for teaching and scientific study inCanada. This facility is used for research, teaching anddisplay to the general public. The greenhouses holds acomprehensive plant collection of several thousandspecimens. The display houses are open for public viewingweekdays between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

In addition, the Carleton University Biology Department hosts its annual ButterflyShow releasing over 1300 live exotic butterflies into the Nesbitt Biology buildinggreenhouses. The Butterfly Show is a free event open to the public.

Donation BinsDonate  unwanted clothing items at theCanadian Diabetes Association ClotheslineProgram. These red bins are located withinresidence.

Waste and Recycling

Carleton University is committed onworking towards increasing waste diversionin all operations. Carleton University’sextensive waste reduction and recyclingprogram initiatives include: the introductionof 4-stream recycling stations, wastediversion walls, construction and demolitionwaste diversion, donation bins, electronicwaste collection stations, and the 'Say NoThanks To Straws' program. There are two Certified Zero-Waste facilitieson campus:  the caf  and the Food Court.‘Zero-Waste’ status indicates 90% or more oftotal waste is being diverted away fromlandfill. See our Waste Management Guide on howto responsibly recycle on campus.

Sustainable Initiatives

Electrobac E-Waste Stations

Recycle your e-waste such as chargers,cables, peripherals (e.g., memory cards, etc.),small electronics (e.g., cell phones, charges,and cartridges). These bins do NOT acceptbatteries, light bulbs, VHS, and cassettes.

Electronics Drop-Off Stations

Hardware  Services  operates the E-WasteRecycling Program and provides anenvironmentally friendly and secure disposalof e-waste free of charge. Larger e-waste products such as computermonitors, keyboards, and printers can bedropped off at 1251 Herzberg, between 9:00a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Additionally, e-waste can besent by internal mail to Sustainability, FMPStores, Maintenance Building.

Lug-A-Mug Program

Save money and a cup by bringing your re-usable travel mug every time you purchase a drink. You can also purchase a Ravens Coffee Co. mug for only $1 from Tunnel Junction, Food Court,Loeb Cafe, and Bent Coin.

Textbooks for Change

Donate your used textbooks published inthe last 15 years in the Textbooks for Changebins. Textbooks for Change will  donate yourtextbooks to partner campuses, resell themat affordable prices, or recycle any out-of-date, damaged, or unusable textbooks. TRANSPORTATION

Secure Bike Storages

Carleton University offers several openbicycle racks in convenient locationsthroughout the campus and securebicycle storage compound locatedunderneath the pool deck at AthleticsBuilding. The secure bicycle compoundallows you to lock your bicycle in anaccess controlled facility. Access passes are available through Parking Services. You can register to usethe compound by creating a profile onthe Parking Services  online registrationsystem, ParkAdmin.

Bike Repair Stations

The bike repair station is located on thenorth side of the Architecture building. Thestation includes all the tools necessary toperform basic repairs and maintenance.This allows bike commuters to do anyquick fixes, like changing a flat tire, beforeheading home for the day.

EV Charging Station

There are designated Electric Vehicle(EV) charging stations located acrosscampus where staff, students and facultycan charge their electric and hybridvehicles.

Car-Share Program

Parking Services has partneredwith  zipcar  and Communauto to makecar-sharing available on campus. Car-sharing is a service that provides itsmembers with access to a fleet of vehicleson an hourly basis. Members can reserve a vehicle online orby phone, choose the nearest vehiclestation based on their specific need andthen simply drive away in the registeredvehicle. Conveniently, vehicles are locatedon campus at Lot P4 (near the O-TrainStation).

Bicycle Registry

Campus Safety Services has partnered withCrime Stoppers to promote Ottawa’s firstbicycle registry program through OttawaPolice: 529 Garage. 529 Garage  is a bicycle registrationprogram that connects bike riders witheach other with the common goal ofpreventing and addressing bicycle thefts.Register your bike in Campus SafetyServices' free bicycle registry. COMMUNITY STRATEGIES

Community Garden

Kitigànensag, Algonquin for “little gardens,”is a student-run project that promotes local,organic food production, education andcommunity building. It is a space wheremembers of the Carleton community cancome together to grow and enjoy healthy,socially just and sustainable food. Thegarden is located at the southeast corner ofthe Nesbitt Building beside the River Field.

Fair Trade Locations

You can find Fair Trade products at all non-franchise locations including the caf,Food Court, Tunnel Junction, Bent Coin, Loeb Café, Bakers Grill, Catering, and Rooster's Coffeehouse.

As a Fairtrade Certified Campus, Carleton University works towards the promotion andavailability of Fair Trade products.

Energy Dashboards

Within all of our residences you will findLucid Energy Dashboards that displayresidence energy use and wasteconsumption. The Canal Building is alsohome to an energy display screen. In addition to the live energy data, thescreens display sustainability facts aboutthe university and helpful tips to live amore sustainable lifestyle.

Food Centre

The Food Centre is a CUSA service centrelocated on the 3rd Floor, University Centre.The offer a variety of programs with the aimof promoting food security for members ofthe Carleton campus community. Users may visit up to a maximum of twotimes per month and are required to bringtheir student or alumni card (or otheridentifying information), in addition toplastic bags and egg cartons in order to pickup their emergency assistance hamper. TheFood Centre also runs food drives and otherinitiatives and events to support the OttawaFood Bank, and increase awareness of foodsecurity and poverty issues in ourcommunity.

Good Food Box Program

The Ottawa Good Food Box program, whichworks with local farmers to provide studentswith $5, $10, $15, or $20 boxes of freshproduce for a significantly reduced costcompared to retail. The program deliversaffordable boxes of delicious and nutritiousvegetables and fruits to 40 neighbourhoodlocations throughout Ottawa once a month. You can orderottawagoodfoodbox.ca and pick it up at FoodCentre, 3rd Floor,University Centre in the3rd week of the month.
