BIRTHRIGHT/GENESIS HOUSE Next weekend, Feb 3/4, is Birthright Weekend for our parish. Collections are taken for the Birthright Center and Genesis Houses. Envelopes are avail-able near the baskets in the back of the Church and checks should be made out to "Birthright" or "Genesis House". Goods needed include soaps, deter-gents, paper towels, maternity clothes, diapers. In conjunction with this collection we will also have the Penny Sunday Collection. Please consider giving your pennies to Birthright, an organization that helps pregnant, needy mothers. Bring your bag of pennies and drop them in the special bucket marked "Birthright" by the entrance of the church.

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY

Fr. Ben’s “Paper Clips”

There are two words that may send a tingle down our spines when we hear them in Mark’s passage for this 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time—authority and obey. Whether it’s a question of stay-ing up past our bedtimes, or dating whomever we wish, or wanting an extra day off from work be-yond our scheduled vacation limits, or any of a host of things we demand we have a right to do or follow—people in authority often like to remind us of the reality of those words. Perhaps we might begin our reflection by making a quick inventory of our own experiences with authority and obedi-ence. As a young, teenage high school seminarian, I recall a particular encounter between our Dean of Students and me, one that ended with me being branded “an authority problem” for the remainder of the semester! I suspect, when it comes down to it, we all have authority problems—whether it be because of our disdain for authority and the sometimes-seeming willy-nilly method of decision-making, or perhaps because our decisions are too easily influenced by someone in au-thority as we strive to always be the good boy or girl (perhaps even still trying at the ripe old age of 77!) following what we are told to do. Everyone was amazed in today’s gospel passage that the unclean spirit obeyed Jesus instant-ly and came convulsing out of the possessed man. With the continuing erosion of authority in our times, we may be amazed if anyone obeys anybody under any circumstances! Maybe our discomfort stems from interpreting obedience as “blind” obedience. We’ve all had the experience: a person in authority speaks; we are to respond as requested; the matter is fin-ished. Whether it be a parent, teacher, school administrator, boss, pastor, spouse, government leader—oftentimes we are intimidated into responding simply because they are the authority; they have the power to make us do something. Jesus, however, presents a different reason—a spellbinding reason—to obey him. His au-thority didn’t come from telling people he was in command; it came from the way he conducted himself—the way he lived each day of his life. The people whom we have authentic respect for, whom we truly allow to exercise authority over us, are most likely people we recognize as worthy of that respect because of the way they live their lives. As we sit in the shadow of these words from sacred scripture, we may want to ask our-selves: How do I relate to authority? What kind of people do I allow to exercise authority over me? How much authority does my relationship with the Lord exercise in my life? Let us not become the people “at Meribah in the days of Massah in the desert” and harden our hearts. May the power of this Word of the Lord and our celebration of the Eucharist still allow us to be spellbound by the authority of Christ, as he speaks to our hearts. Fr. Ben

Signed copies of fr. ben’s newest book, stooping down: getting close enough to see, as well as his two other titles are always available in the parish office.
