MAY 31, 2020 W E L C O M E PENTECOST SUNDAY
The Mission of our parish is to serve our neighbors with Jesus, to pray in faith with Jesus, and to teach as His Church with Jesus, so “that all may have more abundant life.” (John 10:10). The Word of God, the Sacraments, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are the instruments and standards of this work of evangelization and faith formation.

Based on the best-selling book Salvation: What Every Catholic Should Know this video series is inspiring, engaging, and accessible. Faith Direct and Text-to-Give
Dear Friends, As a result of Bishop DiMarzio’s directive of May 21, our parish (and others in Queens and Brooklyn)
has opened its lower church for private prayer and devotion only. That means: no Mass, no distribution of
Holy Communion, no prayers out loud or with a group, and limited to ten people at a time for four hours a
day. Each visit is limited to thirty minutes and visitors must wear a mask and sit six feet apart from each other
in the designated spots. We strongly urge people who are elderly or have health problems to avoid returning
at this time. Beginning also at this time, we may celebrate weddings, baptisms and funerals, but with the
same restrictions: only ten people at a time, all wearing masks and distancing, and no Holy Communion.
Confessions also will resume this Saturday, May 30, at 3:30 PM in the lower church, but outside the
confessionals, with no more than ten people in line, with masks and social distance. Although these
restrictions are burdensome, we should follow them as acts of charity that are for the common good in this
extraordinary situation. We are particularly grateful to the volunteers who have offered to act as door
monitors and cleaners during the period of visitation.
If all goes smoothly and there is no apparent spread of infection, the next phase is to open up for
daily Mass, but we can’t say when yet. The final phase will be to open up for Sunday Mass, but again, we
don’t know when. Even then, we will be subject to the restrictions of NYS and safety precautions as outlined
in last week’s letter. And we will make the livestreaming of Mass a regular feature of our pastoral service.
The deprivation of our regular access to Holy Mass during these past months is a terrible spiritual
burden. It is unavoidable at this time, and I suggest we regard it as an act of charity in order to protect oth-
ers from illness. It may be helpful to consider the spiritual burden carried by others of previous generations
and places. People living in Communist countries were deprived of any spiritual consolations for over seventy
years, and in some places still are. Catholics living in remote mission territories lived and continue to live with
very infrequent access to the sacraments. Regular reception of Holy Communion was itself a rarity until the
reforms of Pope St. Pius X in 1910, who promoted frequent communion and lowered the age of First
Communion from 12 to 7 years. Our situation is spiritually burdensome, but at least we know it is temporary.
This too shall pass.
I am extremely impressed with the parishioners who have utilized digital means to practice
discipleship: our Spanish prayer groups who share daily rosaries and chaplets, the Legion of Mary
conducting their weekly prayers and meeting throughout the pandemic, the weekly hymns posted by
Catherine our organist and Lucille’s weekly letter to the English choir, the gathering of the Mothers Prayers
Group online as well, and more. Some Scripture groups have met on line. The Parish Food Pantry at St
Margaret Mary has resumed operation one day a week after a month of hiatus, and have distributed to over
400 households, representing several thousand individuals, outside and with safety precautions in place. I
have even been able to conduct some virtual meetings of parish committees during this time. I think all these
experiences may show the rest of us a way to be Church in the near future when either law or caution may
continue to restrict our opportunities for gathering. Let us pray for a blessing to emerge from this time of
trial.
Msgr. Sean G. Ogle
