HISTORY OF WANGEROOGE ISLAND RAILWAY

The Wangerooge Island Railway was opened in 1897.

The line led from the newly built pier in the centre of the island.

A train needed about 20 minutes to negotiate the 3.5 kilometre long route at a top speed of 30 km/h.

After the end of the war the destroyed section was rebuilt.

In 1952 the Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced diesel locomotives, the first one being a Gmeinder locomotive.

In 1957 the change of traction was completed.

THE CEMENTERY OF THE WAR

This war cemetery contains the graves of 238 victims (including 131 German soldiers, 6 'Marinehelferinnen' and an unknown number of foreign forced laborers) of the Allied bombardment on the Wangerooge peninsula on 25 April 1945.
