The Heart of Christmas by Rev. Msgr. Albert Contons, Honorary Member

A strange phenomenon of modern times is the celebration of the shell of a holiday, but forgetting the very inner purpose of the celebration. This is how many people celebrate the feast day of Christmas. They enjoy the fun, the excitement of Santa Claus, the jingling bells, toy soldiers, dancing Christmas trees dressed in tinsel and lights. But they celebrate Christmas without the Christ Child, without the Infant born in Bethlehem, without the Mass that makes present to us Christ who nourishes our hearts and minds. Last year I enjoyed the Christmas Show at the Reagle Music Theater in Waltham, Mass. It sets out to present the “true meaning of Christmas.” Beyond the joy and fun of Christmas it celebrates many of the traditional Christmas Carols such as “Hark! The herald angels sing, ‘Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!’” The climax of the Show is the lovely tableau of the Manger scene at Bethlehem with angels singing “on earth peace to people of good will.” The central figures of the Show are Jesus, Mary and Joseph, with shepherds watching and Magi bringing their gifts. In the spirit of New Evangelization the Show presents the beauty and meaning of the birth of Jesus with the best of musical and dramatic artistry. The Show states so clearly that the Coming of Jesus is the greatest event of human history.

Christian believers see the universe as coming from the creative hand of God, who saw that it was good.

Adam and Eve committed the original sin of placing their own Ego above God’s creative will. The Son of God, Jesus, came to restore the original goodness of creation as the Creator willed it. Sin is a rebellion against the order of creation that comes from the hand of a good and loving God. The prophet Isaiah, many centuries before Jesus, foresaw the coming of the Savior. In vision he understood the meaning of the mystery of the Incarnation. “They will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak. Say to those whose hearts are frightened: ‘Be strong, fear not!’ … Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing.” The Gospel so often recounts the wondrous miracles of Jesus. The crowds would react with awe, and often exclaim, “We have seen incredible things today.” We too, in our own day, are seeing “incredible things” being accomplished by the power of God at work. We have seen Pope John Paul the Great, like a modern day Moses, lead to freedom some 80 million people in Eastern Europe enslaved by sinful regimes. We have seen Mother Theresa of Calcutta, India with her followers bring the healing and loving care of God to the sick and dying in many parts of the world. Our Western societies enjoy the blessings of human rights, of freedom to live our lives in pursuit of happiness, the fruit of the human dignity proclaimed by Jesus. So often we stand in awe of the saintly people who have lived in our own time. The incarnation and birth of Jesus are the mustard seed planted by God in the vineyard of godly people. The seed grows, multiplies and flourishes in the lives of those who welcome the seed of God’s Word. We are truly blessed and enriched by the Incarnation and birth of the Christ Child. How profound is the meaning of Advent and Christmas. Truly we can say, “We have seen incredible things” in our own lifetime.

In Memorium Anna Klizas Wargo, HM

Council 144 – Anthracite, PA

It is with the utmost sadness that we announce the passing of long time Honorary Member and dearest friend, Anna Klizas Wargo, HM of Council 144 – Anthracite, PA. Ann was our National President from 1988-1991, Past President of the St. Casimir Guild, Inc., and held many offices on the Council, District and National Levels throughout her many years in the Knights of Lithuania. While we will miss her smile, her warmth and her always cheerful disposition, we will always have the wonderful memories of the time we shared with her. She will always remain in a special place in our hearts. Ann passed on to her eternal reward in Heaven on Thursday, October 31, 2013. Her passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. Our deepest sympathy’s to her family and friends. I was honored to have been asked to write a few words about Ann, which were read at her funeral service. I’ve been asked to reprint them here for everyone.

I’m sure I speak for the entire Knights of Lithuania Supreme Council when I extend my deepest sympathies to Anna’s family on her passing. She was one of a kind and we will miss her. Since hearing the terrible news last Friday about Anna’s passing my mind has been racing with many wonderful memories of a truly wonderful lady. What can be said about her that all of us don’t already know? Anna was more than just another Knights of Lithuania Honorary Member she was someone I am honored to be able to call one of my dearest friends. When I joined the Knights Anna was one of the first people I met from “out of state”. At the time she was our National President. She was truly a class act. Upon meeting her you felt as though you knew her forever. She had a special way of making you feel

welcome and included. She treated everyone with courtesy and the highest level of respect. She was always willing to listen even if your point of view was different from hers. She was ever the perfect stateswoman and respected your opinion; she treated you as an equal always. I can not remember a time when Anna ever lost her cheerful disposition, if she did you never saw it. I remember in those early days of my membership being elected to National Office. I have to admit it wasn’t always smooth sailing; mistakes were made as I learned the ropes. On those occasions I always knew I could count on Anna for guidance and support. With her in your corner you never had anything to worry about; she was always willing to assist you with whatever you may need to get the

Page 7: Vytis - The Knight November/December 2013

Page 7

job done. As I said she wasn’t just another member, she was a friend, she was family. Seeing her at meetings or conventions was always a highlight of the year. Anna not only knew how to be serious when warranted but she also knew how to have a good time. It was always a delightful evening when Anna and her trusty sidekick Helen called you and invited you up to a party in their room. We always jokingly called these “parties” the meeting after the meeting. No Supreme Council Meeting weekend was complete without one and no party was complete without Anna being there. Sadly though in recent years Anna’s health began to fail her and her ability to attend meetings and conventions became prohibited. Thank God for the internet, the phone and email. While seeing her face to face became difficult, technology allowed her to keep in touch. I can remember the last time we saw each other a few year’s back. The Supreme Council Meeting was in nearby Philadelphia so a few of us decided to come out early and drive up to see Anna in St. Clair. Our plan was to take her to lunch or dinner and catch up. Of course, she wouldn’t have any of it, and insisted on preparing dinner for us at her home so we could spend more

time together visiting. We had a truly wonderful day with her and when the time came for us to return to Philly I don’t think there was a dry eye among us as we said our goodbyes. I think deep down all of us knew that it would be the last time we would see each other. Her family has lost a truly remarkable lady, her friends have lost a caring confidant, we all have lost a piece of who we are because each of us are better for having known and loved her. She will always be with us in our hearts, our thoughts and our wonderful memories of the time we shared together. Anna I know you are looking down on us from above. You’re probably saying “enough crying, break out the Baulo and the scotch.” In many ways I guess Anna was our own personal Auntie Mame; while she lived her life for God and Country, she also “LIVED” her life following the thought that “Life is a banquet and most people are starving to death!” Rest in peace dear friend, may God grant you every possible grace he can for the love, support and kindness you have given to all of us, no one deserves it more. Anna we love you, we’ll miss you, and we’ll never forget you. Amžina Atilsi mano draugai, iki kol susitiksim vėl.

District & Council News Amber District C-3 Philadelphia, PA Stephany Gutauskas Ausra Maknys’ grandniece, Amber Hillhouse, graduated from Wissahickon High School on June 7, 2013. Amber now attends Cornell University. Mark Petronis Jr., grandson of Marge and Charlie Petronis, graduated from Williamstown (NJ) Middle School on June 18. On June 24, Margaret Petronis retired from the Philadelphia Public School System. Congratulations and best wishes for a happy retirement to you, Marge. It was a lucky summer for Stephany Gutauskas who won the $300 second prize in St. George Parish’s summer bazaar cash drawing in June, and in July, took third prize of $100 for her work “First Love” in the K of L Foundation Inc.’s essay contest. Valio! Council members with staycations this summer included Mary Czupich, Dianne Drumstas, Anne Marie Jaskel, Tony and Mary Pacesa, and Alberta Weigand. Dee Herbert took day trips to Ocean City, MD, and Cape May and Wildwood in New Jersey. Irene and Walter Svekla, HM, spent some time in historic Plymouth Rock. Lilllian Greymas and Irene Ozalis relaxed in Cape May, NJ. In September, they vacationed in Ocean City, MD, as well as Myrtle Beach, SC, Colonial Williamsburg, VA, and Fredericksburg, MD. In August Stephany Gutauskas and Ausra Maknys traveled to Frackville, PA, for Lithuanian Days at Schuylkill Mall, which featured ethnic food, Lithuanian

song and dance performances, exhibit rooms, and vendors. During Labor Day week, Marge and Charlie Petronis relaxed in Wildwood Crest, NJ. Cathe Herbert, daughter of Dee Herbert, surprised our September council meeting with her homemade saltu barsciu and suris. Cathe is engaged to Tom Farley with a wedding planned for 2014. Carol Ann Drumstas, daughter of Diane Drumstas, is engaged to John Curry and will marry in January 2014. On Sunday, September 15, C-3's own spectacular centennial celebration began with 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. George’s Church in Philadelphia. Council members and representatives from the Lithuanian American community wore juostas and processed as a group into the church. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Anderlonis, HM, was the celebrant, Stephany Gutauskas was the lector, and Ausra Maknys served as eucharistic minister. Luncheon followed at La Stanza Restaurant in South Philadelphia. A few speeches by prominent Lithuanian Americans focused on the Knights’ accomplishments during the past century. We are so proud to be members of an organization that has helped so many of our own in a variety of ways. Long may our council live as we remain faithful to our God and country. Newly elected officers and chairpersons for the coming year are as follows: Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Msgr. Joseph Anderlonis, HM; President, Irene Ozalis; Vice President/Lithuanian Affairs Chairperson, Irene Svekla; Treasurer, HM Walter Svekla; Recording Secretary, Dianne Drumstas; Financial Secretary, Lillian Greymas; Trustees,

Anthony and Mary Pacesa; Ritual Chairpersons, Mary Pacesa, Margaret Petronis, and Alberta Weigand; Culture Chairperson and Vytis Correspondent, Stephany Gutauskas; Sunshine Chairperson, Ausra Maknys. Jacqueline Fox, in ethnic costume, attended a special Mass at St. Andrew’s Lithuanian Catholic Church in Philadelphia on September 22, which coincided with a visit by Philadelphia Archdiocesan Auxiliary Bishop McIntyre. The Mass was held to show the Lithuanian community’s solidarity in hopes of maintaining the visibility of St. Andrew’s parish. In this extraordinary year of 2013, when our national organization and our local C-3 celebrated their first centennials, our own council member Anastasia Binkis became a centenarian on October 4. Anastasia joined the Knights in 1981 and holds the Third Degree. We heartily congratulate Anastasia on reaching this enviable milestone. May God shower her with many blessings. Ilgiausiu, Sveikiausiu, Laimingiausiu Metu! At our October 6 council meeting, we received bracelets of yellow, green, and red loops made by Fia Cardoso, granddaughter of Alberta Weigand. We graciously thank Fia for her time and effort in crafting the lovely wrist bands for our members. On October 7, Stephany Gutauskas and Ausra Maknys in ethnic costume, along with other council members, attended an International Rosary for Peace at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Philadelphia. HM, led the second decade in Lithuanian. Benediction concluded the ceremony. On October 27, a select group of our Knights attended the 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. George Church in Philadelphia and the parish community communion breakfast that followed. We enjoyed the food and the camaraderie at the event. Mid-Central District C-96 Dayton, OH Fran Petkus As summer eased out, fall activities began with our monthly meeting on September 8. Details of the 100th Anniversary Knights of Lithuanian Convention were shared. Plans for the September 21 MCD Fall Convention /Pilgrimage were noted. Holy Cross Parish celebrated its feast day on September 15 with 10:30 a.m. Mass and a buffet lunch in the church undercroft. Thanks to Judy Petrokas, Jim and Connie Geiger, Mollie Walters, Mary Petkus, etc., for putting this together. One exciting item on the agenda is the celebration of Holy Cross’s 100th anniversary as a parish on June 22, 2014. The Regional Fall Harvest Picnic, formerly known as the Four Parish Fall Harvest Picnic took place on September 15, with more than 300 in attendance. In time we shall all be clustered with St. Peter’s of Huber Heights, but we hope to remain individual parishes. It was good to see children having fun and becoming acquainted just as the adults had. There was music for dancing and a group of young people who performed Clog Dancing. While researching the history of C-19 Pittsburgh for the

convention program book, John Baltrus learned that, as a district, we went to Carey, OH, under the chairmanship of HM Stanley Vaitkus, long deceased. John volunteered to chair the MCD’s fall convention/pilgrimage in Carey. The Franciscan Friars, who take care of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, hosted the tour and history of the shrine. In the upper basilica, pilgrimage devotions were held, the rosary was said, prayers for healing and individual pilgrimage with the Relic of the True Cross took place, and confession and Mass were held. In the lower church, led by MCD President Michael Petkus, we paid tribute to the deceased members of the district by lighting a candle for each council and reading the names of those who have died. Also, one could see the artifacts people left commemorating cures that occurred and other items such as notes or gifts received from their visit to the shrine. The shrine has many relics of the Saints of God, and these are offered for veneration by the faithful in the Chapel of the Holy Relics in the lower basilica. After Mass we broke bread at a restaurant in Upper Sandusky. We held our MCD meeting in a room at a motel that John had reserved for us. We agreed to remain as the Mid Central District with Michael continuing as our president. The only changes on the board were the following: Daniel Tucker, Trustee; Robert Pant, Sgt.-at-Arms; Lauretta Pant, Ritual; and John Baltrus, Lithuanian Affairs/Cultural Chair. Thanks to HM Michael P. Petkus, deceased, we have continued to hold our annual Mass and cemetery visit for the deceased members of C-96 for more than 60 years. Mass was held for the

living and deceased members at Holy Cross Church on September 29. Names of those buried out of town were read in church before we headed to the cemetery. Lauretta Pant led us in reading the names and the prayers that follow. At the cemetery, Alex Fletcher led in setting up chairs and tables (bringing water, etc.) near the gravesites of Revs. Titas Narbutas and Vaclovas Katarskis. Thanks to George, Frances, and Elena Mikalauskas for making the sandwiches and all the trimmings. Joyce Berczelly brought the dessert. When all were full and our ‘mess’ cleaned up, we broke up into four clusters to visit more than 60 member sites in Calvary Cemetery. Light showers began before we were finished. We ended our visit at Mike’s grave, as he had chaired this event until he passed away. Alex Fletcher led us in the closing prayers. At our monthly meeting on October 6, dates were set for upcoming projects such as a special Koffee Klatch in November. Also in November, Holy Cross’s Anglers will have their Annual Turtle Soup/Kugelis Sale. In December we will have our annual Christmas caroling to the shut-ins of the parish and C-96's Christmas party hosted by Michael and Norma Petkus at their home. Highlight of the October meeting was the election of officers for 2013-14. They are as follows: Spiritual Advisor Rev. Eric Bowman; President Andrew Berczelly; First Vice President MaryAgnes Mikalauskas; Third Vice President Erin Petkus; Recording Secretary Anne Louise Tucker; Treasurer Alex Fletcher; Financial Secretary Frances Mikalauskas; Trustees George Mikalauskas and Daniel Tucker;

New England District Carol Treciokas The Knights of Lithuania NED Fall Convention was held on September 15 at the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception Facility in Putnam, CT, hosted by C-103 Providence, RI, led by Ruth Krecioch. Msgr. Contons conferred Third Degree Awards before Mass to Edward Balskus of C-6 Hartford, CT, and to Barbara Thompson of C-26 Worcester, MA, assisted by Ritual Chair Marcia Rogers. Msgr. Contons and Fr. Sadauskas celebrated the Mass, and Msgr. Contons opened the meeting with a prayer. Fifty-two members attended, representing ten councils. Dave Boucher served as the Sergeant-at-Arms and head of the Sviklas Tamulevich Scholarship Fund. Camp Neringa

was awarded $1,000 from the fund, and Xavier Dembele was awarded $300. William Wisnauskas and James Rogers audited Treasurer Barbra Trybe’s books and reported them to be in good order. Dave Boucher reported on the NED Spring Convention hosted by C-78 Lawrence. President Vivian Rodgers said that 35 members came to the NED retreat in Kennebunk, ME, June 21-23. Veronica and Maryte Bizinkauskas gave their wonderful reports as NED delegates to the 100th National Convention held at the Marriott Hotel in Quincy, MA, July 25-28. Newly elected NED officers sworn in were Shirley Musumeci of C-6 as president and Marcia Perednia of C-27 as corresponding secretary. Phyllis Gendreau of C-17 and Vivian Rodgers of C-26 were elected to the Ritual Committee. Phyllis is the new chairperson of the Ritual Committee. We thanked Vivian for being an outstanding president for ten years and congratulated Shirley on her presidency. In her acceptance speech, Shirley thanked Vivian for her outstanding hard work and dedication. Shirley pledged to respectfully address the changing needs of the membership. She asked us to reflect on the profound fact that our paths have crossed as we journey through life and have freely chosen to be part of this organization. She noted that in over three million years since the dawn of mankind and over 100 billion people who have lived, we happen to be here on earth together at the same time and place with shared Lithuanian heritage. Shirley suggested that if this is God’s plan for us, we should make the most of it by enjoying and celebrating our community. In the spirit of camaraderie, we can reconnect with one another, make

new friends and acquaintances, share ideas, support charitable causes, and sustain our Lithuanian culture and traditions. Shirley said that from her vantage point, she saw wise, experienced faces with sparkling eyes. She saw survivors and children of survivors from strong Lithuanian stock whose ancestors endured many hardships and pain. She saw generous faces, bright with smiles and anticipation of whatever the future holds. Shirley asked for our active involvement and help in the progress and development of the NED. You have our full cooperation, Shirley. Ruth Krecioch of Council 103 Providence, RI, transferred the flag to Phyllis Gendreau of C-17 South Boston. Msgr. Contons said the closing prayer, and we sang the “Vyciu Himnas” at the end. The NED Cultural Festival was held on October 6 at Maironis Park in Shrewsbury, MA. Approximately 160 K of L’ers came to the fest for an enjoyable day to meet dear friends, to eat delicious kugelis, desra, and kapusta, and raise money for our NED Fund. Buying a chance ticket from different councils is fun. Janina Nawarskas sold books covering her life fleeing from Lithuania to America. Jurate Norkunas sold handmade amber jewelry. Three- to eight-year-old children from the new Lithuanian School in Worcester, under the direction of Jolita Segur, entertained us by reciting poems in Lithuanian about animals. These adorable children enunciated very clearly and projected their sweet little voices. Then Aldona Kris-Kibelkstis read poetry. We thank Vivian Rodgers and the rest of C-26 for ALL the work they do on the annual Cultural Fest.

Upcoming events: St. Francis Church, home of C-10 Athol, celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 27, 2013, beginning with 11:30 Mass at the church. The NED 2014 Spring Convention will be held on April 26, hosted by C-17 South Boston. The NED retreat will be in Kennebunk, ME, June 20-22, 2014. The NED 2014 Fall Convention will by hosted by C-7 Waterbury, CT. C-6 Hartford, CT Agnes Gagnon Carol Spakauskas, our president, presided over our September 10 meeting. She announced that Brian Daigle will serve as our Spiritual Advisor. She also informed us of the death of Mary Kozicki. Mary and her sister, Domicella Rydziel, are members of our council. Our ever-faithful member, Shirley Musumeci, traveled to Quincy, MA, to commemorate the 100th National Convention of the Knights of Lithuania. She returned to our meeting with a 36-inch hand-woven juosta from Lithuania inscribed with “Lietuvos Vyciai 1913-2013.” She also received a 500-page program book with the history of each council, district, and Supreme Council as well as detailed information on the Lithuanian language, calendar, customs, dancing, music, costumes, recipes, sports, history, and Lithuania’s patron saint, St. Casimir. She noted that the book is available for sale. Looking ahead, the K of L will coordinate a trip to Lithuania leaving the United States from Chicago, Newark, and Boston on June 23, 2014, and returning on July 7, 2014. Participants will attend the 90th anniversary of the Lithuanian Dance Festival to be held on July 1, 2014 in Vilnius.

On September 15, Shirley Musumeci was elected president of the NED at the Fall NED Convention. Congratulations, Shirley. She will follow in the footsteps of HM Vivian Rodgers, who served in this role for many years. We thank Vivian for a job well done. Additional congratulations are extended to Ed Balskus, who received his Third Degree. Several members were on hand to offer their support. Returning to the business portion of the meeting, we welcome newly installed members Jurate Bernotas and Katherine Stosoins McCormick. Also, our congratulations to Xavier Gwaz-Dembele, who received the Sviklas-Tamulevich Scholarship. Sue Gudaitis arranged a trip on September 28 to the shrine of the Divine Mercy. The prime purpose was to visit the gravesite of Fr. Gerklis. He traveled many miles to say Mass at Holy Trimity Church in Hartford. Carol Spakauskas placed a wreath on his grave. Council members who attended were Leona Sawka, Kay Urban, Gene Ziurys Jr., Gert Kruzinauskas, Carol and Ed Balskus, Vik and Carol Spakauskas, Irene Petkaitis, Shirley Musumeci, and Teresita Petravicius. All Mass attendees were impressed with Fr. Dan’s homily, recalling Fr. Gerklis. C-7 Waterbury, CT Marlene Shea For members of C-7, this was not our usual September. Most years we are returning from our summer hiatus, greeting old friends, etc., but this year a number of us met regularly all summer, planning the 100th anniversary of K of L’s founding, which we held on September 29

Planning began in late June following our annual end of the year pizza party and raffle chaired by Betty Bebrin with pizzas brought in by Jonas Zemaitaitis. Twelve members attended the initial planning session where we made a plan for the day: Mass, reception, dinner, and entertainment. Little by little, all the details came together, and we dealt with some serious obstacles. Although St. Joseph Church (the second oldest Lithuanian church in the United States) is still operating, the school, parish center and, sadly, our K of L building are all for sale. Nonetheless, with the pastor’s permission we were allowed to hold the reception and dinner in the school hall. Unfortunately, the gas had been turned off in the building, so the food had to be prepared elsewhere and brought into the hall. Also, tables and chairs had to be brought in, and the hall had to be cleaned. Despite all this, our faithful members met the challenges, and it was a wonderful day of celebration, both fun and profitable for our council! In October it was time for elections. Four of our officers were willing to stay on and were unanimously reelected: President Linas Balsys, Vice President Gary McGuire, Treasurer Al Ulozas, and Financial Secretary Bill Stokes. Recording Secretary Marlene Shea stepped down due to a conflict on Fridays, and we welcome our newly elected Secretary Gintas Zamaitaitis. Our trustees, Bob Orintas and Betty Bebrin, are also staying on. Our next events, now being planned, are our annual Fall Pancake Breakfast on November 10 and our Christmas party on December 14 at our club. A number of our members are also involved in planning for Kucios,

which we hope will be held in the school hall on December 15. We wish a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas to all our fellow Knights! C-26 Worcester, MA Ruta Some of our council members were honored at the NED convention in Putnam at the Immaculate Conception facility. Barbara Thompson, who has been working hard to keep the Lithuanian culture active in Worcester, was awarded her Third Degree at this meeting. Congratulations to her! Vivian Rodgers has retired her position as president of the NED. She presented the gavel to Shirley Musumeci of Hartford, the new president, gave a retirement speech, and was presented a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses. Vivian also mentioned that she and Al were celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary. Everyone stood and sang Happy Anniversary to this great couple! Through the years, Al has been at Vivian’s side, helping and supporting all of her endeavors. The NED council held its Cultural Festival at Maironis Park in Shrewsbury, which included a Lithuanian dinner, baked goods, raffles, amber jewelry, plus various councils had things for sale. The afternoon’s highlight was the performance by the children of the newly formed Lithuanian School, ages 5 to 12 years, singing and reciting poems. They were great–and such perfect Lithuanian! Vivian Rodgers presented each with a little gift—a delightful afternoon with good attendance of members and friends. Vito Gadilauskas even traveled from Portland, ME, to join us—so nice to see him again.

Our fall Chinese Auction’s proceeds were sent to the Saulutes Children’s Home in Lithuania. These raffles get better and better with some wonderful gifts to bid on. Some of them included jars of homemade rhubarb by Marion Racicot, a coffee maker, stained-glass case, puzzles, liquors, scratch tickets, Halloween and Christmas items, etc. We had good coverage by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and the Catholic Free Press. They reviewed what happened to St. Casimir’s Lithuanian Church five years ago and the assimilation of its parishioners—how some joined St. John’s and others joined churches closer to their homes. Lithuanian Masses with traditional songs are now being held monthly, on average, at St. John’s Church in Worcester in an effort to continue the Lithuanian culture. Some Masses include K of L members in traditional costume participating in the services along with readings, a Lithuanian choir, and a visiting deacon. Some special Masses honor Our Lady of Siluva and the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which bring back happier memories of long ago. Usually, a reception is held in the parish hall. It is a beginning and attendance seems to be growing at these Masses. Marion Racicot recently turned 80, celebrating at a party held by her immediate family at a Cape Cod restaurant. She said that she could not believe that there were eight grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and another on the way. While all were enjoying themselves, a 6-year-old great grandchild piped up with “I am so proud of you great grandmother and I love you.” Marion said this was one of the best presents she could have received.

Cynthia and Arthur Douglas were enjoying camping and hiking at Arcadia Park in Maine for a month, where Cynthia, recovering from a back injury, found the outdoors and exercise helpful. On their last day, they were told they would have to leave because of the government’s closing of parks. Anne Frederico’s sister, Mary (Zalieckas) Reeves recently passed away. One week later, her husband, Joseph Reeves, followed her—a double sadness for the family. Also, Patricia Sharkus, a former member recently passed away. Our deepest condolences to these families. An update on the doggy news: Barbara Thompson’s adopted dog, Jasper, graduated from obedience school, weighs about 65 pounds, and is still growing. As for Dana Marcinkevicius’s tea cup Pomeranian, Precious, Dana is always ready to show pictures on her phone. The dog is only 3 years old and she has about 2,000 pictures. C-27 Norwood, MA Carol Treciokas We reelected the same officers: President, Charles Treciokas; First Vice President, Patricia Adakonis; Recording Secretary, Marcia Perednia; Treasurer, Ramona Gonski; Financial Secretary, Carol Richard; Trustees, Teresa Wasil and Carol Richard; Sergeant-at-Arms, Irene DeShiro; Ritual Chair, Carol Treciokas; Vytis Correspondent, Carol Treciokas. We plan to have our annual Communion Breakfast on January 19, 2014, at Raphael’s in Walpole. We will raise funds for

our treasury with a yard sale in the spring. C-78 Lawrence, MA Jim Ouellette 2013 has been a very special year for our council with the centennial celebration of the founding of the K of L. It all began in the basement of the former St. Francis of Assisi Lithuanian Church on Bradford Street. We were honored to host the opening event in April with representatives from the Supreme Council in attendance in addition to members from the various NED councils. It was on the same day as the spring district meeting. On the same day, I was honored to receive my Third Degree medal during the 11:00 Mass at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church. Receiving it in my hometown of Lawrence made it more special. Once again, our council president, David Boucher and his dedicated kitchen staff comprising Amelia Stundza, Tilly Stundza, Eva Taper, and Gert DeCrescenzo (just to name a few) did an outstanding job with the preparation and serving of the traditional Lithuanian dinner. There was also a light lunch at the end of the meeting before everyone departed. Our council was represented at the national convention by our council president, David Boucher, council secretary, Gert

DeCrescenzo, and Eva Taper. They were joined at the banquet by Deanna and Dick Nealy, my wife, Christine, and me. Joining us at our table were Phyllis Gendreau’s three sons and a daughter-in-law. What a wonderful and memorable time it was! One of the highlights of the banquet for my wife and me was having our picture taken with Ruta Lee. She was so gracious when asked if she would honor us with a picture. It came out great and has a place of honor in our home. I also have a copy in my office. Congratulations and thank you to the Anniversary Committee for the wonderful job they did putting this memorable event together. Perfection! In May we gathered to celebrate the 65th anniversary of ordination and the 89th birthday of Rev. Albin Janiunas and Rev. Msgr. Albert Contons. They were ordained on the same day at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston and their birthdays are just a few days apart. Unfortunately, Fr. Janiunas was not able to join us and was missed by all who gathered to celebrate these two dedicated priests. Thank you to both of you for your spiritual guidance. During the summer months of July and August, our council took its usual hiatus and meetings resumed in September. With the holiday season quickly approaching, we will now be preparing for our annual Christmas gathering on the first Sunday in December. May

everyone have a blessed Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Council 141 – Bridgeport, CT Gary Anderson At its October meeting, Council 141 presented its slate of officers for 2014 to the membership present who voted to accept the slate as presented. C-141 officers and Committee Chairpersons for 2014 Include: President - Barbara Schmidt; First Vice President - Marie Brilvitch; Third Vice President - Peter Balcius; Secretary - Helen Simanis; Treasurer - Patricia Silk; Financial Secretary - William Brilvitch; Trustee - Gary Anderson; Trustee - Sister Patricia Rickis, DHS; Sergeant at Arms - Walter Gintant; Sergeant at Arms - Peter Balcius; Ritual Chairperson - Marie Brilvitch; Lithuanian Affairs- Gary Anderson; Vytis Correspondence - Gary Anderson; and Sunshine Chair - Linda Gray. A request from the Pontifical Lithuanian College of

Saint Casimir in Rome received from Rev. Audrius Arštikaitis, College Rector

The following has been received by our National President, Regina Juska-Svoba, HM, regarding some maintenance work that needs to be done at the College of Saint Casimir in Rome. As long time “Godparents” of the College we wanted to share this news with our members. Should anyone be able and willing to assist the college in this project please consider a donation to it through the St. Casimir Guild, Inc.

Project for the refurbishment of the terrace An extraordinary maintenance project for 2014

The objectives of the project The main building of the Pontifical Lithuanian College of Saint Casimir in Rome has 3 external terraces, on the first, second and third floors. Actually, there are no urgent concern regarding the terraces on the second and third floors, but there is a need of a refurbishment of the terrace on the first floor. As it may be observed in the enclosed photos, the paving of that terrace is in a bad condition after several decades of its use without renovation (Enclosure). As the terrace serves, at the same time, as a roof over the Sacristy, the Library and the Dining room of the College, it’s permeability during the rains begins to cause some damages to the ceiling of the aforementioned spaces. Some years ago, namely in 2006, after this problem begun to appear, the consequences were provisionally obviated by installing an additional suspended ceiling in the Dining room. Nevertheless, the situation has continued to worsen and already presents a risk of causing a frequent and long-lasting humidity to the aforementioned parts of our building, in addition to the degradation of its esthetical condition. The main objective of the refurbishment of the terrace on the first floor would be its waterproofing and prevention of damages to the spaces under it. The project The Pontifical Lithuanian College of Saint Casimir has a long year experience of cooperation with the enterprise “Restauri di Sartori Mauro”. At my demand, the aforementioned enterprise has proposed a quote for the refurbishment works at the terrace on the first floor (Enclosure). The works would include the removal of the old paving and the installing of a new one, on the space of 280 square meters, at a price of 50.400,00 Euros (without V.A.T.), that is 180,00 Euros for a square meter. The works would comprise the replacement of the connecting steps from the yard, for a price 4.800,00 Euros (without V.A.T.). Thus, the overall quote would be as follows: Replacement of the terrace paving: 50.400,00 Euro + 22% VAT= 61.488,00 Euro Replacement of the steps from the yard: 4.800,00 Euro + 22 % VAT = 5.856,00 Euro Overall: 67.344,00 Euro (91.037,00 USD at the exchange rate 1 EUR = 1.35147 USD on 4th November

2013).

A center for Lithuanian settlement since the late 1800's, Schuylkill County's population has the greatest concentration of Lithuanian Ancestry in the US. The coal industry drew many of these immigrants. The local Knights of Lithuania, among the nation’s oldest chapters, celebrates and preserves its ethnic heritage. Rev. Schuylkill County was essentially the center of Lithuanian activity in America and Shenandoah was its “capital city” (known to the Lithuanians as “Shenadorius.”) (Chernoski, “Little Lithuania, USA” Pages 14-15) Lithuanian Census: In the early years of Lithuanian immigration, official immigration records were woefully incomplete, even inaccurate. Not until 1898 at the insistence of organized Lithuanians, were the regulations changed and incoming Lithuanians began to be registered as Lithuanian. (Poland or Russia was recorded) (Kucas, “Lithuanians in America”, Pages 58- 59) Lithuanians first arrived in Shenandoah in Schuylkill County in 1869 and continued to enter the county in significant numbers through the early 20th century. This coupled with bitter religious and political persecution and compulsory military service in 1874 sent many Lithuanians overseas and ultimately down into the mines of Schuylkill County. (Schuylkill County Ethnic Heritage Study, page 30) The vigorous coal industry was the primary reason for the great influx of Lithuanians to Pennsylvania since 1870. Despite the gradual decline of the coal industry, about 10,000 Lithuanians were living in Shenandoah in 1940. From 1895 to 1964, many mayors, policemen, judges and municipal officers of Shenandoah were Lithuanian. (Fainhauz, “Lithuanians in the USA”, Page 40) They opened businesses, stores, and taverns. Lithuanian organizations became increasingly, and politically important. (Saldukas, “Lithuanian Diaspora”, Page 23) St. George Parish Church Buried and prominently remembered in the St. George old cemetery is Father Andrius Strupinskas. He was the first priest from Lithuania who established in 1872 the first Lithuanian parish in the USA. (Chernoski, “Little Lithuania, USA”, Page 22) In the Shenandoah area, which included the towns of Mahanoy City, Gilberton, Mahanoy Plane, Girardville, Lost Creek and William Penn, there lived a large

number of Lithuanian Catholics. Rev. Andrew Strupinskas, came to America from Lithuania in 1866 and resided in the rectory of St. Raymond in New York. He then lived with his sister, Mrs. Peter Kazakevicius in Shenandoah. Archbishop Patrick J. Ryan of Philadelphia accepted him (Rev. Andrew Strupinskas) into his diocese, and in 1872 he appointed him pastor of all Lithuanians in the Shenandoah Area. (Kucas, “St. George Parish” page 169) In 1872 St. Casimir Parish was established in Shenandoah originally to serve the Lithuanian community. Father Andrew Strupinskas was appointed the first pastor and served the parish until 1879. (Hanley, “The Diocese of Allentown”, A History, Pages 155-156) To replace him, the Archbishop appointed Father Alexander Lenarkiewicz, a dedicated Pole. He spoke to the people in Polish. While he was speaking, the people...left the church. They asked the Archbishop to replace him with a Lithuanian priest. Their request was denied. The Lithuanians of the former St. Casimir Society then transferred membership to a new St. George Society. (Kucas, “St. George Parish” pages 170-171)

Lithuanian Days This festival had its origins in 1914 when the local Lithuanian community came together in celebration during the Feast of the Assumption, a major Lithuanian religious holiday. K of L Council 144 sponsors the annual Schuylkill County Lithuanian Days held in August and currently held at the Schuylkill Mall. (Chernoski, “Little Lithuania, USA”, pages 18-19) By 1919, the Lithuanian immigrants to the coal region were so numerous that Schuylkill County was chosen as the site for a National Lithuanian Convention. In 1914, the first recorded ethnic celebration in the USA –Lithuanian Day at Lakeside Park. From 1922-1984, Lithuanian Day was moved to Lakewood Park. (Guinan Family, Lakewood Park, page 89) Note: Lithuanian Days will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2014. It is the longest running consecutive Ethnic Festival in the USA.

Knights of Lithuania – Anthracite Council 144 Another keeper of the flame of Lithuanian Identity within Schuylkill County is Council 144 of the Knights

of Lithuania. It maintains an active Lithuanian museum and cultural center in Frackville. (Chernoski, “Little Lithuania, USA”, page 18) The Knights of Lithuania, Anthracite Council 144 sponsor the Annual Lithuanian Days that began in 1914 on the religious feast of the Assumption.
