The Professor
For new readers, the Professor is a weekly look at university football around the world, highlight-
ing university club sides, famous victories and epic clashes. This week we go to the current World
Cup holders to visit the city that was founded in 825 AD by Moors and was once the capital of Al-
fonso X of Castile. With the history lesson out of the way, lets learn about
Universidad Catolica de Murcia www.ucamcf.es
The Universidad Catolica de Murcia is a recent
creation, founded in 1996 as a private Catholic
University. It currently boasts 15,000 students,
10% of which are foreign. A big focus is sports,
with the University ranked 1st in Spanish uni-
versity sports competitions.
UCAM not only promotes the practice of sports
but also sponsors and co-owns sports clubs in
the Region of Murcia, increasing its scope with
the main sponsorship of a basketball profes-
sional team, which plays in the top league,
competing with the basketball arms of FC Bar-
celona and Real Madrid.
In 2009 , a local businessman bought a nearby
club, relocated it to Murcia and with sponsor-
ship and shared ownership with the university,
renamed the club UCAM Murcia. By 2011 the
club was fully integrated into the University
Sports programme, as a sponsor and co-owner.
In 2012, the club was promoted to the Spanish
2B division, the fourth level of Spanish football,
where it finished 17th, and was relegated.
This season has been much better. Last week-
end, UCAM beat Olimpico de Totana 4-0 to seal
their division title with three games to spare.
Later this year they’ll compete in playoffs for a
chance to get back into the higher flight.
The club plays at 'The Mayayo' located in San-
gonera Green, a stadium with a capacity for
2,500 spectators.
Current players include Javi Henares, who was
formerly on the books of Hamilton Academicals
in Scotland and played in Switzerland and Pico,
who was formerly with second division Real
Murcia.
In 2013, the 10th annual European University
Football Championships were held in Spain, at
the University of Almeria. In pool play, UCAM
beat the 2012 European champions Bielefeld
University (who we profiled last year) 3-0. Af-
ter cruising past Belgian and Spanish teams in
the playoffs, UCAM faced the hosts in the final.
The final match was very intense and equalled
ending with 0-0, after disputing the extra time
UCAM Murcia got the win 4-2 on penalties.
Club XI - 18-23 April 2014
Note—Only eight players this week due to the small number of games played over the last weekend. Next week we hope to be back with the full complement.
Keeper: Tax Davidson - Pulled off some top saves for the Beaveres, including an incredible save, go-ing head to head with a 100kg+ Tawa striker—Tax cleared the ball, however tragically copped the full weight…
Defence: Greg McKay - Game number 300 for the Rods, the first player to do so, Greg put in an-other great performance, up front and then at left back. The Rods might have lost, but Greg didn’t stop running the entire game.
Simon Davies—Notable performance for the Mens 1sts against Miramar Rangers.
Midfield Seb Ninness - as noted in the match report about, Seb strove hard to express himself on the ball throughout the second half.
Rebekah Lee—(playing two games) really dug in hard in the last 30 min of that second game and didn't let getting pushed around stop her!
Lance Molyneaux —instrumental in the Cy-cles win with 3 assists and a goal (and because he allowed the captain to finally score by letting him take the penalty!!).
Strikers Lauren Hakkaart - scored a perfect hat-trick, plus one, four goals in total for the Women’s Firsts in their great 5-1 win over North Welling-ton in the ASB Knockout Cup.
Miia Korpela - a great work-rate up front for the Women’s Unified team, which was rewarded with a goal!
If you have a player for the Club XI, email [email protected] to see that player’s names go in the mix for that week’s team

Cancellations have already hit home, with only a handful of games played last weekend. Some
teams have only played once this season, after three weeks, so hopefully we’ll get a full range of
games in for the weekend. Already some fine performances though, including the women’s
first team winning its first appearance in the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup in about 10 years...
Men’s Firsts Match Report
Venue: Wellington College (2.30pm kick-off, April 18, 2014)
Following a promising University opening, right midfielder Dave Hudson struck the Miramar crossbar with a cross-shot after being played in by right back Andrew Staples.
However, Miramar gradually gained some as-cendancy, returning fire on the University crossbar from distance, shooting narrowly past an upright, finding keeper Matt Walker in good form with a low save to a first-time strike and causing problems from corners.
University then suffered a blow to its resources with all three substitutes having to be made in a 16-minute spell. On 28 minutes central mid-fielder Nacho Donovan signalled he was strug-gling with a back issue and instantaneously Hudson pulled a hamstring -- his replacement Franky Mwanza then suffered an ankle injury when creating a shooting opportunity with a minute left in the half.
Nonetheless, the visiting side rallied in the final quarter-hour of the period with a dipping strike from the edge of the penalty box by central midfielder Steve Davey having to be pushed out of play by the Miramar keeper. The resultant right-wing corner from striker Matt Wilson was palmed away under pressure at the near post and central defender Si Davies reacted prompt-ly to redeliver the ball into the six-yard box but the keeper eventually smothered in a mini-scramble.
As the half drew to a close a Miramar free-kick taken deep on the left wing bounced just past University’s far post.
Having weathered Miramar pressure early in the second period, University swept to the oth-er end of the field as right back Matt Ryan broke up an attack and played in Seb Ninness and the midfielder cut in from the right wing before shooting just past an upright.
Miramar had a strong penalty claim turned down on the hour-mark and then keeper Walk-er had to scramble across his line to save well to his left.
With the game having taken on an end-to-end battle despite the beaming sun and still condi-tions, Miramar ultimately broke the deadlock on 67 minutes. A free-kick earned to the left of goal outside the box was superbly curled out-side of the boot into the top-right corner of the goal.
A Miramar player arriving on a clearance out of the University area shot just over the bar before central defender played a well-judged ball over the home side’s defensive line to release Wil-son, but the striker inadvertently handled while accelerating away in space.
Right back Andrew Staples delivered a tantalis-ing cross from the wing which University could not capitalise on and then Wilson almost got in on the Miramar goal, before the home side sealed the points with ten minutes remaining. Having halted a University break on the left wing, the ball was promptly played into a Miramar attacker who created space to shoot home firmly into the top-left corner from just inside the area.
Gathering a left-wing Ninness corner deep in the box, Davey floated the ball agonisingly past the left-hand upright and the central midfielder then shot wide after being set up by interplay between Ryan and right midfielder Matt Rowe.
Coach’s comments: Our opponents were ar-guably deserved winners of this contest. They weathered what we could throw at them and then got home with two excellent finishes. Miramar has a lot of experience mixed with youthful skill and pace in its ranks and will un-doubtedly again be a force in the league this year.

That said, we battled manfully, created our fair share of chances and could easily have taken the lead ourselves at various stages and then potentially forged a different result.
Nonetheless, we have not been maintaining possession as well as we would like in attack and there are some aspects of our defensive play as a team that have been letting us down.
A slight tweak in our training regime is being implemented and we are looking forward to taking on the next challenge of Waterside Ka-rori at home this coming Saturday (the Gossies will be providing the curtain-raiser).
Young Seb was our man-of-the-match for deal-ing with some criticisms levelled in the first pe-riod and then striving hard to express himself on the ball in the second half.
