Philip Lawson studied music at the University of York, where he was taught composition by Wilfrid Mellers, and also specialised in singing and organ. After eleven years as a Bass Lay Clerk at Salisbury Cathedral (1982–-1993), during which time he also frequently performed as a freelance singer with ensembles including the BBC Singers and The Sixteen, he joined the King’s Singers, with whom he was First Baritone from 1994 to 2012, and for whom he was the principal arranger from 1997 to 2012. He has also held several teaching posts, and currently works as a freelance composer and arranger.

Philip Lawson studierte Musik an der Universität York, wo er Kompositionsunterricht bei Wilfrid Mellers erhielt und außerdem die Fächer Gesang und Orgel belegte. Elf Jahre lang sang er als Bass im Chor der Kathedrale von Salisbury (1982–1993), während er gleichzeitig bei zahlreichen Konzerten von Ensembles wie den BBC Singers und The Sixteen mitwirkte. Dann wurde er Mitglied der King’s Singers, bei denen er von 1994 bis 2012 erster Bariton und von 1997 bis 2012 Chefarrangeur war. Daneben ging er diversen Lehrtätigkeiten nach. Gegenwärtig arbeitet er als freischaffender Komponist und Bearbeiter.
