A Prayer For The Leaders In Your Life

Dear God,

I stop and think of those who are leaders in my life...

in my home...

in my work....

in my country....

in the world....

Perhaps there are some I find it hard to think of with love.

I hand over to you any anger or fear I feel.

In this moment, I am willing to send them love.

However I feel about them, in this moment, I see your love flowing

through me to them.

Dear God, I ask you to feed these people on your wisdom and your

understanding, for their good and for the good of all they serve.

Let them recognize and take the authority that is theirs to take.

Thank you God for guiding them every step of the way.

Amen

[email protected] Anita Fast is the Registrar and Coordinator of Programming (Room 104). Anita will be happy to help you with any program or registration questions. [email protected] Margaret Trim is the Coordinator of Academic Records and Admissions (Room 108). Besides being a friendly face, Margaret works to ensure our fantastic faculty arrive and are well looked after. She also coordinates Summer School administrative needs. [email protected] Samaya Oakley is the Summer School Assistant and Worship Coordinator. (Room 107). Samaya coordinates the many social aspects of Summer School, as well as joining Margaret in providing support for visiting faculty. Questions about what is happening around VST are welcome. Samaya will also be working with volunteers to prepare our worship services for Summer School (feel free to volunteer!). [email protected] Dorothy Smith is the Native Ministries Consortium Administrative Assistant. Dorothy has a very active role with every aspect of the Native Ministries Summer School, which runs concurrently during Week 2 of VST’s Summer School. [email protected] This handbook is put together for you in order to answer some of your questions about VST’s Summer School and the surrounding UBC campus. Throughout, you will also find helpful and up-to-date information on special Summer School events, worship, dining suggestions, and more. For daily updates during Summer School please check the Summer School easel in the Rotunda on the main floor. Our prayer is that all will be enriched by our time together and that we would all find renewed encouragement for our life and work. Blessings, Anita Fast, Registrar and Coordinator of Programming

An enlightened leadership quality is honesty. The best leaders don't need to stretch the truth. Spiritual leadership recognizes that being honest is the best way to gain respect.

There's no room for dishonest behavior in enlightened leadership.” Diana Lynn

Refreshments at Class Breaks Class breaks take place approximately 10:30am and 3pm each day. Tea and

coffee (and some cold drinks, too!) will be offered in the Rotunda. Gather to

chat with fellow students, and pursue tourist information on your “off hours.”

TAKING CARE OF THE BODY, SPIRIT

AND SELF:

Outdoor Labyrinth The Maltese Labyrinth is located on the Iona Patio, on the south side of the

Iona Building. You are welcome to use the labyrinth at any time.

Rest and Quiet Room Need a free place to rest during the day? The Rest and Quiet Room is the place for you!

On the 4th floor in Room 434, you will find a quiet room with a couch and a pillow (with clean

pillow cases). You may sign up on the sheet posted on the door of the Rest and Quiet

Room for one hour increments. To pick up key, go to the Library. Make sure you return the

key to the Library when your time is up. This room is self- monitored so if you oversleep the

next person signed up may wake you up. Sign up early if you know you will need a rest at a

certain part of the day.

Chapel Space The Chancellor Room (Room 227 in the Iona Building), where we will

have most of our daily worship, will also be available throughout the day

for you to enjoy. Please feel free to stop by to pray, meditate, reflect, or

simply take some time out of a busy day.

opened their Children’s Program to students

attending the second week of Summer School. The

program is provided free to your children through the

support of the Native Ministries Consortium.

Parents/Guardians are required to complete a registration form for NMC for all children

attending, and can do this ahead of time, or on the first day the child attends. Age range is

usually 5 – 16. Younger than 5, we would need to confirm with the leaders first. – the

program runs 8:30am – 11:30am and 2:00pm – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday. We encourage

parents and children to spend the mid-day break together. For more information or to pre-

Reading the Riot Boards: Mini Exhibition of the 2011 Stanley Cup Riot

boards at Museum of Vancouver Venue: Museum of Vancouver

Time: 10am-5pm

Following the riot on June 15, 2011 after the Vancouver Canucks lost game seven of the

Stanley Cup finals, broken windows on downtown businesses were hastily boarded up with

sheets of plywood. The day after the riot fans and others met to clean up the city and began

to leave messages on the boards - condemning the violence and looting, professing their love

for the city, and stating “this is not the real Vancouver”. The MOV received 86 of the

boards for its permanent collection.

Opening June 15, 2012, the MOV will exhibit 15 the boards in the MOV Studio. What

began as a utilitarian reaction to broken windows grew into an open source work of art, with

messages from thousands of Vancouverites and visitors to the city. At a time when world

media fixed on Vancouver’s wrongs, residents-as-authors and as-artists used the riot boards

to examine our collective conscience, encourage reconciliation, address the city’s social ills,

and remind us that hope persists.

That which makes us Haida: the Haida language Venue: Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art (The)

Location: Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art (The)

This exhibition documents the last remaining fluent speakers of the Haida language and

explores the three remaining dialects found in Alaska, Old Massett and Skidegate through

portraits taken by Vancouver-based photographer Farah Nosh over the last eight years and

interviews with the last fluent speakers in these communities.

These men and women (the youngest is now 65 years old) who grew up with active, fluent

speakers in their homes, are dedicating their time to save this linguistic isolate from extinction

by teaching in schools, creating a written orthography and orally documenting all the

vocabulary they know. They speak of how the language has influenced their relationship to

the land and the sea, and shaped their ability to feel and understand their relationship to the

earth and all beings through respect for all things. A full-colour catalogue, with a foreward by

renowned anthropologist Wade Davis, and a CD accompanies the exhibition (Haida Gwaii

Museum Press).

We, all of us, are being called to do something unprecedented. We are being called to

think about "everything that is," for we now know that everything is interrelated and that

the well-being of each is connected to the well-being of the whole. This suggests a

"planetary agenda" for all the religions, all the various fields of expertise.
