VSS Creative Virtual Photography Club is
growing at a healthy pace getting top
photographers as well as keen beginners with
loads of talent on board. The young guns are
showing their worth in heaps and bounds.
To the traditional six categories: Avant Garde,
Creative Portraiture, Creative Pictorial,
Creative Nature, Creative Monochrome and
Photojournalism two more were added:
Creative Scapes and Fine Art.
A maximum of eight entries per photographer
are considered monthly with a max of two
TOP 10's per category.
The goal, to have the TOP 10 winners
published in an annual glossy ‘coffee-table’
book, was realised last year. TOP VSS
Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2018 made
this dream a reality.
VSS Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2019
represents some of the best creative
photography of 2019 in SA. TOP 10 2019 has
taken the benchmark one notch higher, which
almost seemed impossible when glancing
through TOP 10 2018 book.
The photos featured are more than 800
winning images from January to December
2019, from 160 photographers a 30%
increase of photographers reaching the TOP
10. Total entries for 2019 was more than
10,000 and around 500 photographers
competing.
TOP 10 winners are featured alphabetically with a
small bio of each photographer together with his /
her winning images of 2019. TOP 10 1st, 2nd and
3rd winners of month images are displayed larger
than others.
The last chapter, From our Judges features work
of the adjudicators, who for obvious reasons
could not enter the competition.
The first TOP 10 publication was almost a
Who’s Who of Photography - this, the 2nd publication, is an almost
definitive Who’s Who in Modern SA Photography.
Martin Dudley stated that, this publication printed
annually will be a historic reference of our work
and a history of photography in SA, 10 years from
now. The printed photo will always supercede
electronic versions flying around on the net.
I would like to thank and congratulate all
participating photographers, they inspired us and
collectively made VSS Virtual Club the towering
platform for most of the top SA photographers it is
today. And lastly my family and judges who spent hours
adjudicating and discussing top photos in order to
award winners - with the quality of work entered
this is a daunting task.
What strikes us, as judges, is the
diversity of work.

Ado du Toit
Hi! I am Ado du Toit, a "very amateur photographer”. I am constantly learning about how to capture and edit precious images by being part of groups like this.
My Moto...look, read up and learn.
I do not have any fancy equipment but... what I do have, by the heaps, is a passion for life, light and the story that images in the world give us in even the most ordinary of scenes like farm life, illness, mountains and people.I am acutely aware of how short and precious life is, and feel a thrill, a humble awe in the capturing of a split second of the story called life.

I'm a nature lover and spend all of my free time in nature. Eight years ago I joined a photography club and since then I'm hooked on my new passion.
Nature photography is my preferred genre, from
wildlife to macro.
For the last 2 years I've been inspired by Hein and all our photography friends who post their photos on the VSS Facebook page. I have been trying/struggling to also do the creative thing and will hopefully succeed one of these years.

I am Al of Triton Photography. My interest is underwater glamour photography. I started about 30 years ago with photography as a hobby and really liked the human form in water and underwater. Back then images and ideas were hard to find, so I have always made my own props/costumes and scenes for my photography - from mermaids to pirates.
My inspiration is Howard Schatz, with his
photography of ballet dancers underwater.

Alex Cummings
Photographer/Exhibitor.Alex started his career in Scotland as a teenager. He also trained in Design and Fine Art. He started off with a small B&W darkroom but in 1979 he built what was to become an almost professional colour darkroom.Doing well in club and salon scenes until illness forced him to cease, he prophesied the coming of the digital age and was laughed at for saying that it would take over from film. For several years he was out of the photographic scene but now specialises in composite work and the occasional straight image.

Andrew Harvard
Andrew's photography is a hobby and meditation. Canon seascape shooter at heart, but loves his Huawei mobile. First light, birds flying, fish jumping, ocean lapping; this all has an amazingly calming effect; it heals the soul and warms the heart. Mostly self-taught since 2012, loves Robin Sharma's wisdom, Jimmy Macintyre's mentorship and spends hours post-processing. This is also very calming.
Andrew finds God in glorious sunrises, splendid sunsets and the Milky Way.
Featured landscape photographer in the PSSA Image magazine Feb 2016 (front cover photo display, detailed write-up & full centre spread plus other photos) – first time any photographer has been given a double spread, Your Shot magazine (South Africa) April 2014 feature, Independent On Saturday Newspaper 26 Sept 2015 full feature, Beverly Hills 5 Star Hotel Signature Photo of 2015 (Umhlanga), First Thursdays Solo Photo Exhibition at Spiga 'D Oro / Side Bar 200 Florida Rd Durban entire December 2016 - January 2017, Interviewed live on Life & Style 88 FM 2 February 2017, Signature image recently launched beer (2017) of upmarket Umhlanga Oyster Box 5 star Hotel and supplied images Divine Life Society of SA 2019 calendar.

I picked up an entry level DSLR in 2016 after 30 years of putting my love for photography aside and raising my two children as a single mom. A couple of months later a friend convinced me to join Highway Camera Club. There amongst the amazing like minded friends I made I once again discovered my passion. My first love has always been nature as I grew up in the countryside. A talk by David Knox- Whitehead on Macro photography fuelled my already growing passion . I marvel every day at the tiny wonders all around us that are rarely seen and most people would walk right past. My weekends are spent out in the field discovering the world of spiders and insects.
Nothing excites me more than looking through my lens at details I would not
be able to see with my naked eye.
Learning about their habitats and behaviours is important to me and most of my work is done in the natural environment, without a tripod as it restricts me from getting into some of the bizarre positions and places I need to be to get a shot.
My photography highlight so far was receiving a silver medal in a PSSA salon in
2018.

Annaline Werth
I realized my passion for arts when I joined the F-stop photo club in 2015.I had an amazing tutor that encouraged me and gave me advice when I needed it. It was during this time that I started experimenting with different styles, I always try to learn as much as possible from the amazing professional photographers around me. As a photographer I try to be as versatile as possible. I favour portraiture, landscapes and monochrome. The enjoyment of going out to photograph and to be able to share that with my friends and fellow

"There is a famous quote by Burke Uzzle,
"Photography is a love affair with life"
and this encapsulates my passion for photography and approach. I do not have specific genres of photography I prefer, through my travels and experiences, I have found that I am constantly faced with various opportunities and I need to be flexible to adjust. Photography allows me to capture a moment that's gone forever, and my aim is to captivate the viewer and trigger more questions than answers with an influx of emotion. I am an explorative photographer, love to travel and go nowhere without my camera.Photography is an art of observation, you start to compose a photo before you look through the viewfinder -

Anton La Grange
Anton La Grange - Drink
Anton La Grange - Sucess
Anton la Grange is a photographer and photo educator based in the northern suburbs of Pretoria, specializing in nature, travel, photojournalism and street photograph. Throughout his work, one can see that he combines his love of the natural world with his fascination of the world's diverse cultures. Each of his photographs tells a story of life on this planet. I believe the most important quality
of a photograph, as in all of art,
is to evoke an emotional response. While everything in nature does this for me, selecting just the right places and moments to take a photograph that conveys those emotions is far more difficult. Anton became a photographer back in 2009 and hold the following awards: APSSA Digital Colour (Jan 2011), APSSA Monochrome Open (Jan 2014), APSSA Monochrome Photojournalism – Photo Travel – A day in the Ovahimba Kraal (Jan 2016), APSSA (Vers) (Jan 2016) and AFIAP (2013).
“Photography can be a powerful medium through which to
communicate, educate and bridge divides. For those of us in the
industry, and those who approach photography as a hobby, it is a
wonderful way to make a living and share life with our friends, family and
complete strangers”.

I was born and raised in Germany and have been living in South Africa for the past 20 years.I always wanted to share my love for nature, wildlife and the South African people in a different way and inspire people to have a deeper, closer look into society.I got my first Camera during 2014 and haven't put it down since. As a hobby artist this was a new and creative way to show what I see, through my Lens, to discover abstract expressions of the beauty in the natural world.

Bessie Vermeulen
Born in Ladysmith KZN Bessie realised at an early age that she enjoyed art.
Before attending school, she was drawing in sand, on paper and experimenting with everything she could lay her hands on.
The sap of mulberries, the texture
of sand pasted on glue and the patterns of the chickens
feathers interested her.Art workshops and courses followed but she found her true interest in photography. Starting out with the basics, she soon began experimenting with photography as an art form. She enjoys the versatility and ability to use photography to tell stories and create images

Billy Mills Dedicated
As a geologist, Billy's initial interest in photography was mainly focussed around types of rocks and geological features. However, after purchasing his first Nikon camera in 2013 his work based hobby became a passion.
After retiring and moving to the coast in 2014 he joined the East London Photographic Society where he became interested in several genres of photography and ultimately received his LPSSA in 2018.
Billy does have a bias for creating composite images that tell a story or make a topical statement. In this regard Martin Barber has been a friend and mentor who provides boundless inspiration.
Photography has been my passion since early childhood.Added to that I have always been a 'bush-baby' at heart, thus my love for wildlife and nature and capturing what I see and sharing it with others is just a perfect fit.I left my technology business behind to pursue my true passion and I love every second of it. I really only got my first 'pro' cam 3 years ago, so still have a LOT to learn.
What started out as a passion is now an obsession!
Photography is therapeutic; I witness it's calming effect on people, especially children, when they go outdoors with me and learn a few basics about taking a photo. Allphotographers instantly become more aware of everything around them, even when they don't have their cameras in hand.Whether you love wildlife, nature, arts, or people photography; it is an awakening of observation and creativity.
Hi, I am Brigitte Hackl and am an amateur photographer.I became "hooked" on photography a few years back and absolutely love it, not only being a hobby, but something I am passionate about which provides an escape from the craziness that happens around us.I mostly shoot landscapes and close ups. Two years ago I attended the Reefsteamers Steam Train Winter Shoot and discovered a whole new genre which has inspired me to try new things, including motorsport photography. This latest genre is challenging because of the bikes' high speed, but I am enjoying getting to grips with capturing the dramatic moments.I continue trying new things in the art of photography. I am so inspired by the talented photographers, both on the

VSS page and other groups that I am part of, and I asure that I will soon find my true creative niche.Until then my camera will continue to soothe my soul and I will be orking towards having something included in the next book.
I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer who enjoys taking macro photographs as a hobby. The most fascinating part of this journey is to download the photographs and notice things which cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is as if a new world has opened for me at a very late age. I have no formal training and hope to enjoy a few formal lessons to introduce me to my camera and broaden my skills in street photography,I mainly take photographs in my garden where it is really quite and removes me from
the 'real world' for a short while. I have learnt so much about insects and flowers during this time.
Carol Visser
Carol Visser Tulip
Carole's interest in photography began shortly after arriving in SA from Scotland in the eighties. Initially her passion was focused on bird photography, particularly egrets, wildlife and nature (with Albert Froneman as her mentor).
She was also attracted to the raw power and beauty of horses and this led her to the Camargue, France in 2019, where she captured many images of the wild horses of the area (several of which have been depicted on canvas with oil paint as the medium).

Always willing to learn further and expand her photography skills through the

She is now a full-time photographer and artist based at her home studio in Kloof, Durban.
Candice Brophy
Candice is a professorial photographer with a sense of adventure and a deep love for the abandoned buildings of this world. She finds beauty in the unusual making her photos unique and interesting.
Candice finds a world all her own, when taking her camera with,
wherever she goes to capture any moment
that may catch her eye! Candice’s background is that of architecture and photography was a mere hobby. However, her love for photography had now made it her career choice as she pushes harder at each shoot to do and be better, get more creative and enhance her Photoshop skills to produce an end product that makes its viewer go, wow!

Chris Joubert
Chris's interest in photography started in Rhodesia taking photos at the sky-diving club in the early 1980s. He later invested in his first Nikon which only came out the cupboard when he remembered and on his international travels. In 2014 Chris joined the Randburg Camera Club and his interest to explore as many different genres as possible took him into a new world of creative and fine art photography. He loves new challenges, and working on the complexity and set up of how to create various images.Chris's current passion is low light photography, depicting mood and mystery. His engineering background reflects in his attention to detail in both commercial shoots and when creating composites and altered reality images for his own enjoyment, club entries and various competitions. In 2016 Chris received his LPSSA (colour) and in 2019 his APSSA (colour and mono)Chris feels that as photographers the goal is to understand the full subtleties and complexities of light and shadow, to create your own Art in a unique and personalized form.

Although I did have a longstanding fascination into the mechanical side of Photography, I only used it to capture memories from my travels.Since Marleen and I joined a Photographic Club about 6 years ago, I was introduced to Photoshop and Lightroom, which opened a whole new world for me.Though Marleen I was recently also introduced to Hein Waschefort and the whole family of VSS Creative Photographers. It was an eye-opener to see how the talented Photographers at VSS manage to marry Art with Photography to create “Out of this World” images.I am still feeling my way around, and do not have a specific Photographic genre, but
I like to play with “Story telling” images.
Photography had always held a special fascination for me and I'd look at photos of cityscapes at night thinking “I want to take photos like that!”. On a ski trip to Italy in the early 2000's I bought ISO 400 film for my point-and-click film camera, thinking that would get me the village night shots I craved. Knowing nothing about tripods, shutter speeds or long exposure, I came home disappointed to find none of the photos looked like those in the ski brochures. In 2005 I bought my first DSLR and hacked away for 12 years taking thousands upon thousands of below average photos, thinking I was learning and improving. Finally, in early 2016 I started shooting in RAW and manual mode, and made a committed effort to learn some photography basics, which I did through online courses. In 2017, I joined Edenvale Photographic Club to continue my learning curve and, as I enter my fourth year with them, I'd like to think I've made some sort of progress!

Born in 1976, raised in Pretoria. A quiet and reserved person with an uncanny knack to see the world somewhat differently, to see beauty in everything. Pretty much a self taught artist and creative that dabbles in a variety of mediums and styles, from pencil and pen to oils an acrylics. From abstract to landscapes and much in between. Through the years a passion for the digital has grown but did not realize the love for photography and digital until 2008 when on a trip to Mozambique. From there it has been a gradual growth with some high notes and of course, low ones too. Over the years I have won numerous accolades for my work, however always humbled by such, not allowing ego to rule over me. There was a dark time in my life where I no longer saw the world as I once did, but that has begun to grow again through a series of challenges, both creative and personal. A recent loss of everything dear due to fire has brought on changes and a chance to finally move in the direction I want for my future. As the saying goes, a Phoenix rises from the ashes. It is time for this Phoenix to rise, to shine for the world to see.
Always keep the eye open so as to see only the beauty this world has to offer, to
show it through your experience and understanding, to evoke emotion and
awaken those still asleep. [email protected]

I am a passionate nature lover and wildlife photographer. My love for wildlife began as a child when my father took us kids to the Kruger National Park. From there my enthusiasm grew from just viewing the animals to photographing them. As a photographer my focus has always been on mammals and birds in flight but recently, I am doing some landscape work. I spend many weeks and months in the African bush from Kenya to Cape Town, Namibia to South Africa and Botswana always looking for that unique moment that will get a viewer to look twice. The aim of my work is to highlight the beauty of nature and in so doing hopefully slow down
the decline in most species. The more people we can touch
with the beauty of nature the less the better the chance of survival of these
beautiful creatures for our children to appreciate them
in their natural world. Over and above this I frequently take people on private tailored safaris into Africa where we take the time to sharpen the photographer's skills both photographically and in teaching the ways of the animal life in order that we can achieve better photographs without disturbing the subject.
Cobus is interested in photography almost all his life and went through the normal learning curve of photography, the basics and developing film, printing of photos in a darkroom, loading film cartridges from bulk film, etc. Then came digital and everything became so much easier and simpler, and he uses Photoshop for pre-production. He likes “spur of the moment”, “that is how it was” and “candid” photography. He also loves the great out-doors and therefore nature and wildlife photography. He recently started a new part of photography – video, and there is something new to learn – sound!

Dave, married to Esta; we have two daughters and they each have two children. A passion that started off as basic, creating videos with sound / music different effects, this was besides my cycling. This passion eventually led to me shop for a camera. I had just completed 25 years work service with BMW SA, for which they had a policy to pay out a bonus. Not knowing anything about a DSLR I bought my Nikon D3100. I attended there free course to introduce the camera. As I grew on my self knowledge I needed to go big, and bought a D800. This had more challenges than I anticipated. My wife convinced me to attend a proper course, I ended up with VSS college, I have never looked back, Hein, Christene and all the photographers that I am getting to know have been extremely helpful. I enjoy taking shoots of models and macro. I now have a different approach when in the field or around the house with insects.

Dawid Fourie
The proverbial photographic BUG bit amateur photographer Dawid Fourie during 2008 while browsing through some Macro Photos. A whole new world opened right in front of him.Having been a nature lover all his life, he decided to concentrate on wildlife photography. With the help of friends and through self-education, he soon lifted himself up from a person who would capture an animal just for the sake of taking a photo, to a person who would sit hours on end and then capture the perfect photo. The more other photographers work he followed and studied, the more inspired he became. This was when the creative journey really started for him. To be able to take a normal photo and then create a masterpiece was the next step.

Dawid Fourie - The Drag Racer
But that wasn't so simple or easy to accomplish. He soon realized that he must give much more attention to his camera settings, light and how to use that in the best way possible. He then invested in various online photographic courses to better himself.Other genre's were soon discovered, which fueled him to produce creative photo art photography.
