INTRODUCTION OF VOLUNTEER FOR PEACE VIETNAM

Volunteers For Peace Vietnam (VPV) is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded in 2005 with the aim of promoting voluntary service as a means of cultural and educational exchange among people, for peace and friendship, and as an approach to address social problems.

VPV receives international volunteers from different countries and places them in suitable projects basing loosely on the interest of the volunteers and the needs of local communities.

Being an important part of youth empowering program of VPV, VPV Club was founded in 2006 to be a platform for Vietnamese youth to be active and dynamic in the society through which they can improve their own abilities and contribute to the development of the community. Until March 2012, the number of Vietnamese youth registering for VPV club has reached 2500. VPV club has main activities, as follows:

- Develop and organize various/regular voluntary projects - Organize cultural exchange programs and non-formal educational sessions - Provide support for international volunteers

Joining our programs, volunteers will not only experience inter-cultural living and working environment but also have a chance to help those in need. After 6 years of development, VPV club has gained significant achievements in the field of voluntary service and cultural exchange. In near future, VPV Club will organize a wider range of activities to devote as much as possible to our local community in general

and the young's development in particular.

INTRODUCTION OF INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT

IDVPV (International Department) was established in 2010 as the youngest department of VPV (Volunteer for Peace Vietnam), a non - governmental organization for the young who desire to be part of volunteer activities and culture exchange programs.

IDVPV acts as a main bridge to connect international volunteers and the domestic ones. IDVPV's activities entail helping international

volunteers get used to the living and working condition in Vietnam and understand Vietnamese culture deeply through the activities such as Vietnamese lessons, City tours, Field trips, Workshop to strengthen and enhance culture exchange.

Moreover, IDVPV plays a significant role in international gatherings of volunteers such as Work Camps and Global Volunteer Day.

OUR ACTIVITIES ___

1. CITY TOURS Our destinations are not only famous spots but also unique not-so-well-known nooks and crannies of this small beloved city.

Discovering the beauty, cultural-historical depth of each place we set foot in, strolling along tiny streets, passing by ancient stores, giving a try to nearby pavement food stalls in an atmosphere of togetherness will for sure become unforgettable experiences embedded in VPV international

volunteers' heart. If the introduction stopped here, IDVPV's city tours would become nothing other than a kind of tourism service or those of other similar free

travel organizations here in Hanoi, whose mission is also to build a unique Hanoi in the eyes of foreigners. What makes IDVPV's city tours distinguished is its "tourists" and the way "tourists" and "tour guides" approach and make friends with each other. Those city tours may be made on a shoe string and not all of VPV international volunteers have a huge budget like normally generous tourists who will pay anything for a fulfilling trip abroad. And most of our "unprofessional" tour guides are just undergraduates having nothing except for English skills, a love to Hanoi and a desire to convey that passion as well as all of their understanding about Hanoi to foreigners. But so- called difficulties cannot lessen our city tours' quality as well as the attendants' joy and pleasantness. We can proudly say that we actually have been conducting successful city tours around Hanoi for our international volunteers. Interestingly, it's the fire of volunteerism from their inner beings help those people feel free to break up normal barriers and keep close to each other. They are all volunteer guys

contributing to color Vietnamese community and strengthen the peace!

2. VIETNAMESE LESSONS

For foreigners in general and VPV international volunteers in particular,

the biggest problem they firstly get may be the language barrier. This obstacle is the reason why we IDVPV guys wish to provide them with Vietnamese lessons, which can come in handy a lot and lessen much trouble they possibly get into

during period they do volunteer jobs in VPV project sites and in their daily life in such a Vietnamese-speaking community.

Depending on whether international volunteers' wish to learn Vietnamese for just daily communication or learn it as another additional language in the long run, together with some other considered elements, Vietnamese lessons are designed flexibly to suit for every individuals and live up to their expectations for

the best outcomes.

Since this summer, with our better-trained local supporter, a better source of teaching utility support as well as the application of more suitable methods, Vietnamese lessons is definitely becoming more effective and more interesting for both learners and "teachers". Let's discover how amazing this

kind of activity in an instant!

OUR ACTIVITIES ____

3. Working Buddy

In order to build strong friendship, help Vietnamese volunteers involve in social activities and also help international volunteers adapt with a complete new working environment, International Department has re-launched a program called Working buddy. Language difference is obviously one of the biggest obstacles for international volunteers to work as well as live in Vietnam. Many other difficulties include the facts that there are not many English speaking people who work at the same working sites with international volunteers. The working environment, lifestyle, weather, culture, transportation, food, shopping become big troubles without local assistants. That is why we need local supporters who act as those international volunteers’ working buddies to help them simultaneous translate, adapt to the living-working environment here in Vietnam, and assist them as much as you can, especially during their working shifts.
