It’s been another year of growth for EPFL but also one of consolidation, with a number of reshuffles designed to make life easier for teaching staff and students alike.

The Research Office has been restructured to provide a one-stop shop for professorial staff including extensive information on grants, equipment and awards, amongst others.

With the number of students still on the increase, we are looking closely at how we maintain our high standards of teaching whilst adapting to the needs of almost 10,000 students. New courses in Global Issues for all Bache-

lors’ students are being rolled out over the course of 2014 with the aim of providing our students with a rounded education matched to the needs of society. First-year students will also benefit from a common-core syllabus

that will put them straight into the heart of multi-disciplinary thinking. We are also relieved that our students will continue to benefit from the Erasmus+ program despite the disastrous Swiss vote on mass immigration.

Within EPFL’s research community, change is also afoot with the restructuring of our Energy Center, and the appointment of its new Director, as well as the creation of a new Integrative Food and Nutrition Center.

Off campus, EPFL continues to build on regional expertise and opportunity for collaboration. In the same vein as EPFL Valais-Wallis (energy and rehabilitation research), Campus Biotech recently opened in Geneva, offering

a state-of-the-art facility that will benefit our neuroscience teams, including the Human Brain Project. Fribourg is due to follow suit with the rejuvenation of a vast industrial site that will house the ‘Smart Living Lab’, dedicated

to designing the intelligent buildings of tomorrow.

Last but not least, our Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) are entering the next phase of their develop-ment, branching out into Africa, where EPFL is playing a leading role in helping local staff improve and increase

their educational offering in a continent hungry for knowledge and change.

My thanks to you all for your continued dedication to EPFL’s reputation and results and we remain at your disposal for any questions or suggestions.

Philippe Gillet, Vice President for Academic Affairs
