Voorhees parents might beused to teaching lessons to theirchildren, but soon parents willhave a chance to learn some les-sons of their own regarding anall-too-important issue – drugabuse.

On May 2, Voorhees MiddleSchool and the Voorhees PoliceDepartment will partner to pres-ent Michael DeLeon and hisSteered Straight Parent Academy.DeLeon, a former drug addictwho spent 12 years in prison, founded Steered Straight in 2000as a juvenile delinquency inter-vention and prevention program.

Throughout the evening, pre-senters will work to give parentsan overview of the ongoing drug

abuse epidemic in New Jerseyand the latest drug trends withwhich children are dealing.

Since the program was found-ed, it’s spread not only through-out New Jersey, but across multi-ple states.

Now for the first time, the pro-gram will be coming to VoorheesMiddle School, and the district islooking for as many parents to at-

tend as possible.Parents who attend the pro-

gram will learn about the signsand symptoms of drug abuse towatch for in their children, aswell as tips and advice to helpthem stop drug and alcohol abusefrom affecting children before itstarts.

According to Voorhees Town-ship Public Schools coordinatorof special projects Susan Donnel-ly, the district decided to hold theevent because the abuse of heroin

and other hard drugs throughoutthe state, and South Jersey in par-ticular, has moved out of thecities and into the suburbs.

“There has been an increaseeverywhere in the use of opiatesand heroin and a turn from pre-scription medications simply be-cause heroin has become cheaper

Eastern golf gets confidence boostwith team title at Camden County Open

Vikings win tournament after finishing as runner-up in 2015

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

The Eastern Regional HighSchool golf team has graduallyimproved its finish at the CamdenCounty Open the past three years.

In 2014, Eastern finished inthird place.

In 2015, the Vikings finished insecond place in the tournament.

    This year, Eastern finally fin-

ished on top, winning the teamcompetition on April 18 at Tavis-tock Country Club in Haddon-field.

The Vikings shot a team totalof 341 on the 18-hole course to fin-ish in first place, edging secondplace Haddonfield by just twostrokes.

Just as the Vikings have im-proved their Camden CountyOpen finishes, the 2016 team is

improving as this season wearson. The Camden County Openvictory is the high point for theteam after it started the seasonwith a 1-4 record.

“We needed to win this to getour confidence back,” juniorRahil Patel said. “We still have ashot at the conference.”

Eastern’s losses came againsttough competition, including un-defeated Washington Township

High School and one-loss teamsLenape High School and ShawneeHigh School. Two of the matcheswere also very close. Eastern onlylost to Shawnee by one stroke andto Lenape by five strokes.

“Our early losses have showedwe’re resilient and we can stillpush through and play better inthe future,” senior AryamanShanigaram said.

    The Vikings faced more chal-

lenges on the course at Tavistock. The team played on the first nineholes of the course during anearly season scrimmage. Outsideof that, however, the foursome of Shanigaram, Patel and sopho-mores Justin Choi and Joel Harkwere not familiar with the course.

“The greens were very slopeyand fast,” Shanigaram said of thecourse.

“The rough was a good four

inches thick,” Hark added.Hark was Eastern’s second-

highest scorer, shooting an 11-over-par 83. He made adjustmentsat the tee box throughout the day.

“The biggest challenge for mepersonally, it was my own driverswing and just hitting throughshots,” Hark said.

Camden County has begun a 10-year

    Obamacare opponents had an “I

    told you so” moment last

    week, when the nation’s

    largest health insurance provider,

UnitedHealthcare, said it plans to exit

most of the Affordable Care Act state

    exchanges where it currently operates

by 2017.The company’s reasoning is quite

simple – it is losing money ... a lot of

it. UnitedHealthcare said it lost $475

million in the state exchanges last

year and could lose another $500 mil-

lion this year. It’s tough to blame a

company for not continuing a money-

    losing proposition such as this.

    Those fighting Obamacare will say

this is an example of why the health-

care law doesn’t work. Obamacare pro-

ponents will say adjustments to the

law – and from insurers – was bound

    to happen.

But what everyone seems to over-

look, and may have overlooked from

the beginning, is the problem is two-

fold: We need to fix not only the cost

and availability of health insurancebut that of health care as well.

Case in point: The price of Narcan,

a drug used to revive people who over-

dose on heroin, has soared recently.

The reason? No one is sure, but health

officials find it odd that as the drug is

    becoming more prevalent, and more

states are using it, it is suddenly be-

    coming more expensive to obtain.

New Jersey made the drug available

to all first responders in 2014, and

since that time, Narcan has been de-

ployed almost 11,000 times in New Jer-

    sey.

That’s thousands of lives that were

    saved from the drug.

New Jersey isn’t the only state to

make Narcan readily available to first

responders, as more states are jump-

ing on board as the success of it is

    touted.

    Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick

    changed the state’s regulations to

    make Narcan more widely available,

and soon after he did, the price of the

drug doubled in his state – from $15 tomore than $30 per dose, according to

    the state’s attorney general.

It’s curious to see the cost increase

so rapidly as the drug gains more foot-

ing. Outsiders who don’t know much

about the industry – ourselves includ-

ed – would say it looks like a business

is taking advantage of a situation to

    dramatically increase profits.

Maybe we’re wrong. Maybe there is

a reason that producing the life-saving

drug on a mass scale forces the cost of

    doing so to rise substantially.

Or maybe it’s a small sign that the

    problem with our country’s health-

care system isn’t just that insurance is

    out of whack; maybe health-care

providers need to be looked at as well.

    in our opinion

Reform needed on health care, tooFixing only the insurance aspect of  health care doesn’t truly solve the pro blem
