2 Volvo Car UK has experienced a growth of nearly 20 per cent in corporate sales during 2010 as companies start to return to the market to replace vehicles on extended company car contracts. And part of the success is the continuing strides in reducing emissions, as witnessed by the S40 and V50 DRIVe models now at 99g/km of CO2. Along with the C30 DRIVe model, this means three models which attract BIK at 13% and incur no VED charges, nor do they incur the Congestion Charge in London (see story right).During 2010 Volvo sold 19,934 cars to company buyers – 19.7% up on 2009 and one of the largest sales improvements of any of the premium brand car companies. Selwyn Cooper, Volvo Car UK’s National Corporate Operations Manager, said: “We’ve seen a significant increase in orders, with many fleets enquiring about getting their drivers into new cars with lower CO2 emissions and better fuel consumption.”Fleets are recognising, with DRIVe in particular, that their drivers don’t have to compromise on comfort by driving a low

emission car. All Volvo models, regardless of engine size, are available with the high level of specification company motorists have come to expect.As well as this strong sales performance, plus the launch of the dynamic all-new Volvo S60 and V60 models, Volvo also boosted its service commitment with an expansion of the Business Centre network in the early part of 2010.Volvo Business Centre dealers are resourced to sell more than 200 corporate vehicles annually, although a number of them achieve over 500 units. Cooper is also keen to support the non business centre dealers to handle local corporate business in a professional and knowledgeable fashion. “We are talking to all our dealers about them developing sales people with business specialist skills in a bid to make the most of the launch of the all-new Volvo S60 and our range of DRIVe cars,” said Selwyn. “We must build on our current corporate sales success as it is becoming an increasingly important part of Volvo’s future growth ambition,” he added.

Volvo Car UK has teamed up with Ultimate Car Control to offer a unique training programme for company car drivers.Ultimate Car Control has spent five and a half years developing its Excellence in Professional Driving (EPD) programme in a bid to create a scheme that fleets can use to meet their legal obligations and protect employees that use their cars for business purposes.Robb Gravett, a former British Touring Car

Champion and founder of Ultimate Car Control, said: “As a company, we are very excited to be associated with Volvo, as their focus on safety fits so well with our company’s principles.”“However, even with all the safety features that Volvo builds into its cars, effective driver training is essential in the overall quest to reduce the number of road accidents, hence why we have developed the EPD programme.”

We’re all tremendously excited about what the future holds, with a continuing focus on the next generation of low and zero emission models.

But we haven’t forgotten our current models, and the great news for company car drivers is that DRIVe versions of the S40 and V50 models now emit just 99g/km of CO2. That means low benefit-in-kind tax bills, zero VED and, for those companies who operate in London, no congestion charge following Volvo’s lobbying to have the system changed.

We also have two dynamic new offerings in the crucial medium executive market – the sporty S60 saloon has now been joined by an equally sporting and stylish V60 estate.

There’s lots happening here at Volvo – and with our new owners that trend will continue in the future.

Organisations putting drivers through the scheme have already reported successful results – with one organisation witnessing a 47% drop in accidents among its drivers following participation in the course and a 37% drop in insurance premiums meaning that the course can become self-funding.The one-day course is split into two sessions – the first, a classroom-based session covering topics like hazard perception, the effects of drugs and alcohol on drivers, as well as finding out how vehicle safety systems such as anti-lock brakes actually work. The second part is dynamic driver training, where participants learn how

a car behaves in extreme situations and what a driver can do to keep control.For the three years following the initial course, drivers receive additional guidance in the form of ‘memory updates’ from Ultimate Car Control and four online risk assessments to refresh their skills and also to highlight any possible areas of concern to the employer. s40 anD v50 DroP beLow 100g/KmVolvo Car UK has launched revised DRIVe versions of its S40 saloon and V50 estate, complete with Start/Stop technology, thatreduces CO2 emissions to just 99g/km. The revisions reduce the CO2 emissions of the S40 and V50 and mean they now join the Volvo C30 DRIVe under the 100g/km threshold.The changes make the V50 the largest and most versatile sub-100g/km estate car currently on sale in the UK, while both modelsbenefit from road tax exemption and fuel economy of up to 74mpg. The new models are also good news for company car drivers, who can enjoy a premium vehicle whilst restricting their benefit-in-kind tax bills to the 13% of P11D price banding. Furthermore they will continue to enjoy the this low rate of BIK following changes planned in April 2012.The lower emission models now also qualify for exemption from the London Congestion Charge (see story below).

Volvo Car UK is celebrating a landmark victory in its Emissions Equality campaign, following a recent decision by the Mayor of London to allow all sub-100g/km CO2 and Euro 5 compliant cars to enter the Congestion Charge zone free of charge.Volvo’s recent campaign was designed to address what it saw as an unfair charging structure under the old rules, which enabled drivers of alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles to avoid the £8 entry charge despite emitting more CO2 than

many conventional petrol or diesel engine cars.The new rules mean that any car, regardless of powertrain, will be entitled to a 100% discount on the London Congestion Charge. Volvo’s current range includes three 99g/km CO2 models – the C30, S40 and V50 DRIVe models.Motorists can register for the Greener Vehicle Discount from 4th January, subject to a £10 annual payment per vehicle, provided their car emits less than

100g/km CO2 and meets the Euro 5 standard for air quality.Peter Rask, Volvo Car UK’s Managing Director, said: “This decision recognises the huge progress made by manufacturers in reducing the emissions of conventional petrol and diesel engines to levels that are, in some cases, cleaner than those of hybrid vehicles.“It levels the playing field for drivers seeking a true low-emission vehicle and is a genuine victory for Volvo and emissions equality in the UK.”

Volvo Cars is now taking the next step towards next-generation electric car technology. Backed by research support from the Swedish Energy Agency the company is initiating development of a fuel cell that can extend the electric car’s operating range without any carbon dioxide emissions.The aim is to have two prototype chassis based on the Volvo C30 DRIVe Electric ready for testing in everyday traffic in 2012.“This is an exciting expansion of our focus on electrification. Battery cost and size means that all-electric cars still have a relatively limited operating range. Fuel cells may be one way of extending the distance these cars can cover before they need to be recharged. What is more, the project gives us increased knowledge about fuel cells and hydrogen gas,” says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stefan Jacoby.Volvo Cars is working together with the

company Powercell Sweden AB on this project. In the first phase, a preliminary study is being conducted into what is known as a Range Extender, which consists of a fuel cell with a reformer. The task of the reformer is to break down a liquid fuel, in this case petrol, and create hydrogen gas. In the fuel cell, this hydrogen gas is converted into electrical energy, which is used to power the car’s electric motor.The technology generates electricity completely without any emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particles. Due to the highly efficient process, emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are significantly reduced compared with a conventional vehicle. The end products are electricity, water and a small amount of carbon dioxide.The technology also can be adapted for

renewable fuels.This technology is expected to increase the electric car’s operating range by up to 250 kilometres – in addition to the range provided by the car’s battery pack. The fuel cell industry expects that the cost efficiency will improve continuously through refined technology and large-scale production.In the next phase, pending support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Volvo Cars and Powercell will produce two test cars based on the current Volvo C30 DRIVe Electric. Testing of the cars will begin in 2012.“We have just taken the first steps and it is naturally too early to talk about market introduction of electric cars with Range Extenders. The industrial decision will come after we have learned more about fuel cells and the opportunities they offer,” says Stefan Jacoby.

The new Volvo V60 features striking coupé-like lines and a pronounced wedge shape that enhances the car’s stance on the road and emphasises the dynamic design. Behind the wheel, the V60 feels every bit as taut as its design thanks to a chassis that has been tuned to match the expectations of enthusiast drivers. Dynamism is further enhanced by what Volvo’s design team calls the “racetrack” design. The car’s lines do not end abruptly but instead continue to flow organically, continually, echoing the smooth shapes of the racetrack.Volvo’s designers have integrated LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to create distinctive light patterns both front and rear. The vertical position lights at the front, the side-marker lights, the turn indicators integrated into the door mirrors and the tail lamps at the rear all give the new V60 an unmistakable profile even in the dark.

The interior of the V60 sports wagon is a clear example of how Volvo Cars’ designers have added excitement and contrast to the Scandinavian design tradition’s rational simplicity and functionality. The V60 is a five-seater car offering comfortable space for all its occupants.The 40/20/40-split rear seat and the fold-flat front passenger seat make it possible to combine passengers and load in a very flexible way. Each backrest in the three-piece rear seat is folded with exceptional ease to create an entirely flat load floor. The load area has a capacity of 430 litres to the glass line with the rear seats in place, with this increasing to 557 litres when measured to the roof. The 1095 millimetre wide tailgate in combination with extra space behind the wheel housings and under the load floor is an example of the systematic approach adopted to ensure generous load capacity. The all-new Volvo V60 is packed with high-tech solutions that actively help the driver avoid accidents - and help protect the occupants if an accident is unavoidable.Under certain conditions, the optional Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake can detect a pedestrian stepping out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can automatically activate the brakes.The new Volvo V60 also features City Safety as standard. The system can lessen or even entirely avoid low-speed rear-end impacts at speeds up to 18 mph.The new Volvo V60 is equipped with the Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) as standard. Advanced sensor technology ensures that the belt pre-tensioners and the inflatable curtains deploy in the event of a rollover. This, combined with the safety cage, helps reduce the risk of occupant injury in such situations.

Volvo Cars’ chassis experts worked on the driving experience in the new Volvo V60 with the same passion given to the development of the all-new S60. The result is a sports wagon with driving properties that do the sporting appearance full justice.During the development process, the chassis team worked on the new Volvo V60 in parallel with the all-new Volvo S60. The result is a solution that features changes and refinements to virtually every single detail that effects the car’s load carrying capabilities.Certain variants of the V60 can be specified with the optional FOUR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis, which has been modified and refined for better control and comfort compared with previous Volvos.

The V60 is available with a choice of six engines – two diesels and four petrol units. The petrol models range from the 1.6-litre T3 up to the flagship all-wheel drive T6 with 304PS. The diesels offered initially are the D3 – a 2.0-litre five-cylinder engine delivering 163bhp and 400 Nm of torque. Despite the power, this engine still returns combined fuel economy of 51.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 144g/km.The second diesel is the D5, again a 2.0-litre five-cylinder but this time with 205bhp and 420Nm of torque. This returns 52.3mpg average economy and CO2 emissions of 142g/km

The S60 is the most overtly sporting car Volvo has ever built, but that doesn’t mean it has abandoned the qualities that have made the brand so strong over the years.There’s still the full suite of sector-leading active and passive safety systems to keep occupants safe in the event of an accident, but the big difference with the new S60 is the way it drives.Up against German rivals which pride themselves on driving dynamism, the S60 takes the fight straight back to them with a punchy, yet economical D5 diesel engine, smooth-shifting manual gearbox, compliant

ride and handling which encourages you to divert off the main roads and take a more meandering route, when the mood takes you.Under the bonnet of the D5 version on test is a twin-turbocharged five-cylinder diesel engine which delivers 205bhp and 420Nm of torque. That latter figure is very impressive, and endows the S60 with such flexible power delivery that speed can be built very quickly from low speeds in higher gears. But you’ll not want to do that, because the S60’s gearbox shifts neatly between ratios, meaning it’s fun to use.Performance-wise, the D5 acclerates

from 0-62mph in under eight seconds and tops out at 146mph, yet it is the car’s performance at everyday speeds which is just as impressive.In sixth gear at motorway speeds the car is quiet, unruffled and, generally, a very pleasant place in which to rack up the miles. And it feels so planted and secure on the road, thanks to the improvements in chassis and suspension set-ups.The standard-fit Dynamic chassis has been designed to give increased feedback to the driver, and this it does. You can feel the road beneath you and the steering transmits what

the front wheels are doing. Another pay-off is that the S60 remains very flat when cornering, giving the driver a feeling of security.Inside, there’s the familiar Volvo floating centre console stack and clear instruments and dials, while the fit and finish of the materials used is up to the standard in the executive sector.And as impressive as the S60 is on the road, on the balance sheet it puts in a good performance, too. Combined average fuel economy is 53.3mpg, while CO2 emissions of just 139g/km put the car in the 19% benefit-in-kind tax bracket.

In the years to come, the four big differentiators will be horsepower, torque, electrification and CO2. Technically, engines are improving and there is no longer the same need for many cylinders or large displacements to achieve power and refinement. Instead, modern engines have a range of power levels depending on tuning level or degree of electrification. To simplify this, Volvo has identified a new, much clearer nomenclature structure designed to reduce confusion among customers and which will also be future-proof.The new engine names are made up of one letter and one digit – petrol engines will be badged with a T while diesels will have a D. The number that follows will let the customer know where on the performance ladder the engine sits, so currently D3 is the lowest powered diesel while D5 is the

most powerful. For petrol units, T3 sits at the bottom of the range while T6 is the 300bhp-plus flagship. Eventually, the range will go from T to T8 for petrol and D to D8 for diesel.For markets where Flexifuel (petrol/ethanol) engines are offered, these will be badged with an F at the end, for example T3F.It is important from a positioning perspective to be able easily to separate the powertrains from each other. A hierarchic naming, where the rank is clear and simple, will make it easier to understand which powertrain is the most powerful. Volvo’s naming strategy follows the principle: the higher the number, the larger the vehicle. This principle will also be valid for the engine names - the higher the number, the greater the power.This is in line with the way Volvo does things

– the higher the number, the larger the product. so a V70 is larger than a V50, while the XC90 is larger than the XC60. The only exception to the new system is with DRIVe models, which will continue to be badged as such to show that they are the lowest emission models in their respective line-ups. They will also receive a new, clearer DRIVe badge.All other badges will also be revised, with the engine badge on the boot now the same size as the model badge.The move will eliminate so-called ‘badge disconnect’ whereby a car’s badge bears little resemblance to what is actually under the bonnet. This applies to several German car manufacturers who badge cars with numbers that hint at a larger capacity engine than is actually fitted.

range uPDateVolvo Car UK has announced a raft of new engines, safety and infotainment enhancements to a large number of models in the range.New four-cylinder GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) petrol engines have been rolled out across a wide range of models, available to order now. Both the T3 and T4 are available in the all-new S60 and all-new V60 while the T4 is available in the S80 and V70.Two new versions of the 1.6-litre GTDi petrol unit are being introduced - a 150hp T3 and 180hp T4 variant, both delivering 240Nm torque for impressive in-gear acceleration yet frugal consumption.T3 and T4 variants engines on Volvo S60 and V60 models feature a manual gearbox as standard and incorporate a new start/stop function – the first time start/stop has been fitted to a non-DRIVe car.The XC90 gains a new Euro V compliant five-cylinder diesel engine, featuring both

improved performance and fuel consumption. The four-wheel drive D5 now produces 200hp (from 185hp) and maximum torque of 420 Nm (from 400 Nm), while fuel economy has been enhanced from 33.2mpg (EU Combined) to 34mpg. Elsewhere, the XC60 can be specified with the new Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake safety system, seen thus far only on the all-new S60 and V60. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is a support function that helps the driver identify a pedestrian who is potentially putting themselves in danger ahead of the car and can, if the driver doesn’t intervene, actively help avoid a collision.XC60 buyers specifying an automatic transmission can also now opt for the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically helps maintain a pre-set distance to the vehicle in front, even in slow-moving traffic and all the way down to standstill. The car accelerates automatically when the traffic moves away again.
