Volunteering Opportunities!
1. Students Older than Average The MUN Students’ Union currently operates seven resource centres. A resource centre is a
safe meeting space, an information and knowledge source, and a peer support network within
the university community. We are providing a safe meeting space, an information and
knowledge source, and a peer support network within the university community for older
students. The Students Older than Average resource centre is looking for volunteers! Email
[email protected] or visit UC 6013 for more info!
2. CNIB Vision Mate Program CNIB is recruiting volunteers for the Vision Mate program in Newfoundland! As a Vision Mate,
you’ll be matched with someone with vision loss in your area for just a couple hours a week to
help them with everyday activities; like social visits, assistance with organizing, running errands,
reading, going for walks, and keeping active in the community! For more information or to
become a vision mate, contact Paige English at 709-754-1180 ext. 5819 or email
3. Canadian Red Cross
Interested in being part of the largest humanitarian organization in the world? Apply to become
a Red Cross volunteer today! The Canadian Red Cross is currently recruiting for its Disaster
Management and Community Health programs in the St. John’s and surrounding area.
If you are:
● looking for opportunities to give back to your community, meet new people and have
new experiences
● seeking professional development opportunities to build skills and training
● looking for an internship experience that aligns with your education path
then the Red Cross could be the right place for you. Some positions are short in duration while
others require a longer commitment. The time, location and skill requirements vary from job to
job. A representative from Red Cross will work with you to gain an understanding of your
volunteer expectations and determine if there is a volunteer job match for you.
When you become a volunteer with the Red Cross, your volunteer engagement experience is
important to us. We invest in our volunteers through training to maximize learning and
development opportunities, limit risk and stand out as the preferred volunteer agency of
choice.
Volunteers are the heart of the Canadian Red Cross. More than 20,000 Red Cross volunteers
share their time and skills to help others every day. Volunteers represent more than 70% of our
Red Cross workforce. They contribute at all levels of the organization and work side by side with
staff in support of the Society’s mission. Many of our volunteers hold leadership roles within
the organization.
Red Cross refers to volunteers and staff collectively as our workforce and is committed to
supporting this culture through policies and professional practices built on a solid Volunteer
Management Cycle foundation. http://www.redcross.ca/volunteer/apply-now [email protected] 4. Volunteer and get involved with CHMR-FM
CHMR is Newfoundland and Labrador's only campus/community radio station, operating out of
studios on the Memorial University campus in St. John's and broadcasting both on the FM dial
as well as online where it can be accessed around the world.
CHMR is a community access radio station that operates with a large staff of volunteers
producing a broad range of programming. Our volunteers are both students and community
members, and range in age from high school students to retired professionals. Programs
include everything from music (of various genres) to news/documentary and current affairs
issue-based programming.
CHMR is constantly looking for new volunteers in the community who are interested in getting
involved with the work that we do! No experience is necessary besides a desire to learn radio
skills and share those skills with the community. All training is provided. Getting involved with
CHMR can be an exciting way to learn new skills, to have fun while exploring your passions and
interests, or to explore a possible new career! CHMR is one of the province's only hands-on
training environments for radio-broadcasting and radio-journalism and many of our volunteers
go on to forge exciting professional careers in these fields. Some of the programming we
produce is syndicated nationally and internationally and broadcast on other stations around the
world.
If you're interested in learning more, or getting involved, please contact CHMR Program
Director Hans Rollmann at [email protected]. Membership/involvement with CHMR is free
for MUN students, but there is a $20 annual membership fee for non-students.

6. Scouts Canada Hey Student Volunteers! Do you … • Enjoy the outdoors? • Have the desire to learn new skills? • Like to make new friends? • Want to play a role in developing the next generation of youth? If you said yes to any of the above then you have found the right place! Scouts Canada is looking for some new faces to volunteer with our Groups in the St. John’s-area (and beyond)! We are Canada’s leading youth organization. Scouts have a lot of fun discovering new things and experiences they wouldn’t have elsewhere. Along the way they develop into capable, confident and well-rounded individuals, better prepared for success in the world. Scouting offers a world where you can discover the best in yourself and the best in others. The Scouts Canada program is open to BOTH boys and girls, ages 5-26, with age-specific programming (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, etc.). To ensure the success of these programs, we need the support of dedicated volunteers, just like you! Many of our current groups could benefit from additional volunteers, willing to dedicate approximately 12-14 hours/month to the program, generally from September-June, and some groups offer occasional summer activities. There are 14 groups in the St. John’s area that you could join, including a new French Language Group that is in development. If you’re interested in starting your adventure with Scouts Canada, contact William Short at
[email protected] or call 709-687-2888. To learn more about Scouts Canada visit www.canadianpath.ca.
7. Neighbourhood Centre - Call for volunteers!
8. Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre Volunteer Tutors Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre is looking for 1 - 2 volunteers that would like to assist with homework! For more information contact Sarah Osmond at [email protected] or 579-0718 ext.223.
9. St. John’s Native Friendship Centre’s Family Resource Program Volunteers The St. John’s Native Friendship Centre’s Family Resource Program is in desperate need of one or two volunteers. We can use different volunteers for various tasks, but are most in need of child minding volunteers for our “Breathe” parent program which operates on Monday evenings from 5-7pm. Volunteers would come and interact/supervise children (newborn-age 6) in a separate room from parents for a 2 hour time period. Parents are still available if there are any issues but volunteers are expected to set up any activities they have planned, interact with children in a play-based learning setting, feed them snack and clean up after program.
