remain, we are pleased that several needs were met by those who hold The Weils close to their hearts. A special thanks to our housing corporation board chair, Ben Sheridan, for his tireless efforts to strengthen the market and financial position of The Weils.

Members of our board of directors, auxiliary and volunteers invest tremendous time and resources serving on committees, running activities, raising funds and actively engaging in resident life. At this year’s Passover service, board and family members led second night seders using our beautiful tri-lingual Haggadah, much to the pleasure of our residents and their families.

As we look toward the future, our plans include transforming the way we deliver care to individuals, families and communities. It is well-known that chronic diseases, such as congestive heart failure and diabetes, cause major limitations in daily living for almost one out of ten Americans.

As part of Montefiore’s vision of providing excellence in senior health care, we continue to position the organization to be a leader in rehab services, dementia care and chronic disease management. We have partnered with University Hospitals for congestive heart failure treatments and protocols alongwith the Alzheimer’s Association for dementia care training and education.

By taking advantage of strategic partnerships, we are confident that Montefiore will be well positioned to provide innovative solutions. That’s why when active seniors need rehab they are going to seek out our recently opened specialty orthopedic unit. The new unit has private rooms with updated furnishings, flat screen TVs with DVD players, a dedicated staff with expertise in orthopedic care and a more personalized setting for dining and rehab.

This past year has been one of challenges, achievements and celebrations. We owe a debt of gratitude to each of you – our many donors, board members, auxiliary, volunteers and staff for giving your precious time, talents and tzedakah. Your acts of kindness inspire us all and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you.

From earning a coveted spot in Montefiore’s Fabulous Five group of most valuable junior volunteers, winning the title of Montefiore Idol in the talent show to being named The Fannie Cadkin Junior Volunteer of the Year in 2009, Courtney Ray’s experience at Montefiore is filled to the brim with unique accomplishments and accolades. Now after more than three years as a cherished and celebrated junior volunteer, Courtney can add another prestigious title to her resume – this summer’s Cadkin Youth Leadership Intern.

“Being the Cadkin intern is wonderful and fulfilling because I love being at Montefiore and working with people,” says Courtney, who recently graduated from Beaumont School and plans to study biochemistry at The University of Rochester in the fall. And while the internship, sponsored by the Fannie and Milly Cadkin Fund of The Montefiore Foundation, will undoubtedly be rewarding for Courtney, the plans she has in store for the junior volunteers this summer will be equally gainful for Montefiore.

Drawing upon the wealth of experience she has had in her 300-plus hours of volunteering at Montefiore, Courtney will mentor our dedicated team of junior

volunteers from over 20 schools and communities. “I hope to be as warm to everyone at Montefiore as they were to me when I volunteered,” says Courtney, who first came in 2007 to help serve the Passover Seder meal to residents and families.

Courtney will also work in tandem with Shaker Heights High School junior Kayla Bell, who has been named an apprentice or associate leader of the junior volunteers. With an equally extensive background at Montefiore, both she and Courtney will help new juniors carry on the torch of valuable life lessons they have learned at Montefiore – a duty that truly reflects the enduring concept of l’dor v’dor.

We always welcome new junior volunteers (ages 12-18). Please call me at (216) 910-2566 or email [email protected].

PRinCiPLe And PASSion“Arrowsmith” is the title

of a book written during the boom years of the 1920s when stocks were only going up and a golden age of prosperity was unfolding for

America. At this time, Sinclair Lewis wrote this book about a young doctor trying to find his way between serving others for its own sake, or merely enriching himself, between a life of purpose or privilege.

The doctor’s mentor is Max Gottlieb, a determined scientist who inspires Arrowsmith to devote himself to research and service to humanity. Sinclair Lewis won the Pulitzer Prize for this book which became a classic for idealistic medical students and for young people in general. What is unique is that Lewis portrays a Jew, Max Gottlieb, as a positive role model for his hero. Gottlieb is a stubborn and determined research scientist who will not waver in his pursuit of principle and who enables the young Arrowsmith to find a cure for Bubonic plague.

Although over 80 years have passed since its publication, “Arrowsmith” points the way for us to lift ourselves from the ordinary and easily attainable to that to which we truly aspire, from the humdrum to the fresh and untried and to leave our contented routines to pursue ideals with passion.

Don’t you just LOVE this time of the year! All the winter wanderers have returned from their “homes away from home” and we can reconnect while making the rounds from spring luncheons to annual meetings, learning about the past year of amazing accomplishments and ambitious goals for the future – it’s exhilarating, isn’t it… and if they serve ice cream for dessert, I am a very happy woman!

I am also happy to share with you what two great friends of Montefiore have done. Milly Cadkin, of blessed memory, left a generous bequest to the junior volunteer program, a gift that will ensure its future – so please remember Milly when you see our youngest volunteers transporting residents, assisting at events, spreading smiles and good cheer as they go. An anonymous gift of $100,000 will transform our entrance gardens into a veritable wonderland – and you can be a part of this beautification project,

too, if you want to! More about that in the September/October issue.

And of course, I am looking forward to The Montefiore Foundation Donor Brunch, the high point of my year! We invite annual campaign donors of $1,000 or more, all of our friends who established funds since the foundation began in 1995 (we’re almost 16 years old!) and the visionary members of our Legacy Society who have named Montefiore in their wills or have planned gifts to ensure our future, as Milly Cadkin did. We are going to show our gratitude to donors who supported new or existing programs with gifts of $10,000 or more by welcoming them into The Sir Moses Montefiore Society, and all of our special guests will see our fabulous new donor recognition video highlighting transformative gifts made by some of our very best friends.

The Montefiore Foundation Donor Brunch invitations have been mailed. SAVE THE DATE for Sunday, July 18 from 10 am to noon. (I can’t promise ice cream, but there’s challah French toast on the menu!) I look forward to seeing you there!

our Volunteers are shining stars!

now you can reward their selfl ess efforts through our Shining Star program.Have you ever wanted to offer more

than thanks to a volunteer? This exciting new program is a way to recognize volunteers who touch the lives of residents and staff through their kind support and helpful actions. Shining Star forms are one way you can show your appreciation to a volunteer for the time they dedicate and the meaningful work they do. Just pick up a Shining Star form located at all nursing units and at the reception desk. Fill out the form and return it to Diane Weiner, volunteer manager. Once a volunteer has reached ten certifi cates, they are entitled to a free lunch in the staff cafeteria! It’s just another way we’d like to say thank you to our volunteers.

Become a Volunteer!Volunteers are needed to assist with

resident activities including: leading services to welcome the Sabbath, working in the Posh Nosh Café and MoMart Gift Shop and assisting with our Deli Lunches, Oneg Shabbats and Ice Cream Socials. Russian-speaking friendly visitors are also needed to interact with our Russian residents. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Diane Weiner, volunteer manager, at 216-910-2741 or by email at dweiner@montefi orecare.org.
