Director’s Dialogue

When I joined the Pines staff in May

2013, I quickly learned that Pines

volunteers are the pulse of the

organization. Your interactions with

the residents, staff and with one

another exemplify the meaning of

Benevolence:

“Disposition to do good, an act of

kindness, a generous gift.”

It is my honor to serve as your new

Director of Volunteer Services, and I

look forward to personally connecting

with each and every one of you. For

those who attended the appreciation

event, it was a pleasure to see you and

to thank you for countless hours spent

at Pines.

My office is on the second floor of the

Administration Building, and my door

is always open. Please stop by any

time.

Student volunteers rock!

What would summer be without our high

school and college volunteers? We had

amazing group this year, and they were busy

all over the campus. Here are some of the

many areas where they contributed:

Wheelchair transport

Wii bowling and bingo

computer help

mail and daily chronicle delivery

room to room visits

dietary office help

mystery trip helper

child care assistant

New pet on the block!

Meet beautiful Bouclêe, pines’ newest pet

therapy volunteer. The curly-coated

retriever’s soft, lamb-like fur encourages

lots of petting from residents. Proud owners

joan and Stephen engel join our other

wonderful pet therapy volunteers who bring

so much joy wherever they go.

Music, Music, Music

The PINETONES have been entertaining

residents for many, many years. They arrive

an hour early to rehearse, and liven up the

monthly birthday celebrations at Veranda.

These talented men and women bring laughter

and delight wherever they go. And are they

talented!! Not only do they sing, but they tap

dance, march, play marimbas, organ, and violin

and even tell a few jokes.

THANK YOU PINETONES!!

volunteer received a jewel-toned vase with a

lime green spider mum as our gift. The menu of

elegant hors d’oeuvres was created by Pines

Assistant Director of Dietary Services Dan

Littlefield. imported and domestic wines and

beer were served by staff bartenders Kathy

Purdy, Executive Assistant and Don Croll,

Director of Dietary Services. In the past year,

Welcome from John W. Overton, President/CEO Pines of Sarasota, Inc.

Choosing to volunteer at Pines is so critically important to our residents. If

you’ve ever wondered whether your work is valued, just look into the eyes of

our residents and staff . . . and therein lies the answer. I’m so grateful for this

newsletter because this is another way in which we can share with you all that

goes on here at Pines. Your knowledge is key. Every aspect of our work is

important – yet it is the ‘Spirit of Volunteerism’ that holds us together. Pines

of Sarasota is already so vital to our community as you’ll find out in future

issues of our newsletter – Yet, the most exciting this: ‘Our best years still are

ahead of us’. Thank you for your service . . . and the difference you make.
