AUSTRALIA CAIRNS CLOSES
Simone Vinton advised on 17 December of unfortunate Christmas news...
“...sadly, we are seeing the end of an era in this region with
the closing of the Cairns CVA Office. ☹ Hopefully not
forever – as far as I’m aware, Townsville Office will continue
to have a presence in the North Queensland region and I
believe will operate similarly to how things were many aeon
ago when CVA first started, with a lot of operations coming
from the one office in this region.”
FNQVI wishes Simone and her team Best Wishes for the
future and we hope to maybe see her out at JCU.
The Community Engagement Activities this quarter involve simple community
visitations and some follow-throughs from activities started earlier in the year.
LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK
5 Oct 2018, Sandra and Beulah
from FNQVI participated in the
Leukaemia Foundation Light the
Night Walk at Barlow Park.
Sandra is a keen fundraiser for
the charity and raised over $230
through office and private
donations. Sandra was
accompanied by her niece.
Annette Jarrett (still then CEO)
who over the years has been a
very good friend of FNQVI was in
attendance for her last major
event to start the walk. FNQVI
Board and Staff wish Annette
every success for her future
endeavours and good fortune and
health along the way.

Cairns Regional Council's Disaster Management Unit provides administrative, financial and operational support to:
The Local Disaster Management Group - Cairns Region (LDMG)
The Local Disaster Coordination Centre
The Queensland State Emergency Service (SES)
Staff from the Disaster
Management Unit work directly
with communities to help support
their capability during disasters.
Connecting with the LDMG, FNQ
Volunteers has capacity to
facilitate the coordinated supply
of volunteers to the LDMG in the
event of an emergency.
FNQVI does this by simply
keeping a register of volunteers
who wish to be contacted.
Since November 2018 FNQVI has
been undertaking an audit on the
list of volunteers who have
registered to be contactable in
such an event. This process is
nearing completion.
On the 17 November 2018
Services Coordinator Oni
attended the Local Disaster
Coordination Centre Open day at
Woree to see what updates were
in the mix for the coming cyclone
season. Oni was able to liaise
with Sioux Campbell (pictured
above) as well as representing
FNQVI at this important Open
Day.
Oni also attended the Local
Disaster Management Group
Meeting briefly on Friday 24 Nov
(photos below). Major discussion
re-examined were what sort of
disasters would be included and
how to utilize resources to cope
with the immediate fall-out of
these events. FNQVI Members
Red Cross Australia and Anglicare
were included as part of the
resources available.

A three hour Christmas lunch was
celebrated at Dundees on the
Waterfront on Wed 14th Dec ‘18. Staff
Volunteers received Secret Santa gifts
from each other, followed by IVD
Certificates of Appreciation which were
awarded by special guest Cathy Zeiger
(CRC). Santa Will had loads of presents
to thank all the staff for their efforts in
assisting administration throughout the
year. Great thanks to Sandra for her
organisation.
Great food as always and everyone had
a jolly good time!
One comment made by a staff member was” I don’t think I can beat this even at home!”

At this time of celebration with
gift-giving and feasting we
should not forget the gift -
giving that took place two
millennia ago at a birth that
occurred in much more humble
conditions under a bright star.
We give thanks to all those who
volunteer and give their time to
the benefit of the community.
