Tesolin, Renowned Canadian Jewellery DesignerI remember first hearing about Rita Tesolin when participatingat one of the Società Femminile Friulana’s fashion shows. Her jewellery was paired with the clothing and I rememberhow the ladies reacted. They were a hit.

Rita’s creations are show stoppers. Open any magazine witha fashion spread, and you’ll see what I mean. Since childhood,Tesolin has had a way with creating unique jewellery. Atfirst, she began working with leather, suede and metalsshaping them into unique pieces of jewellery. At the age ofseventeen she had to quit working for Simpson's to keep upwith demand for her product for the same retailer.

Later on, Tesolin focused on completing law school andembarking on her new career as an intellectual propertylawyer in downtown Toronto. After taking a break from lawshe decided to have some fun and began to create jewellery. Her pieces had once again gained the notice of the owner ofa Toronto boutique. He placed an order on the spot.Tesolin decided to pursue a different course in life and gaveherself one year to establish enough clientele to sustain acompany. Fortunately, things went well and Rita Tesolin Inc.

took root. Tesolin's trademark, her name with a Monarchbutterfly symbolized the change in her path. A transformation,a new beginning.

Her pieces have been worn by Jeanne Beker, Tanya Kim, andWendy Crewson, on the cover of Elle Canada by Coco Rocha, and none other than the red hot Taylor Swift on the cover ofFlare magazine. She’s also been part of Canada’s Next TopModel, Project Runway and So You Can Think You Can DanceCanada by Judges and contestants alike. Tesolin is currentlyworking with designers Greta Constantine, David Dixon andBrandon Dwyer for the upcoming Toronto Fashion Week.

Tesolin has become a national star in the fashion industry yetdoes not hesitate to assist community initiatives andcharities. She has actively worked with the Oak Leaf Gala insupport of the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity and its longterm care residence for the past two years and hopes to doso for many more (including this year’s which will take placein October).

Natale alla Famee FurlaneDecember is a time for celebrations at the Famee beginning with a tradition thatgoes back many decades…..Babbo Natale. In the past this was an afternoonevent, held on the first Sunday in December. For the past 2 years we have askedSanta to join us in the morning so that we could have ‘Breakfast with Santa’. Inaddition to Santa’s toy bag, this year he brought some special elves to help outand in the end the Balarins of the Famee performed a dance for the audienceencouraging other kids to join in.

The week after Santa, the Famee hosts the Arie di Natale. This year we had bothchoirs, Il Coro di Santa Cecilia and Le Voci del Friuli along with the Balarins of theFamee performing. Alberto De Rosa was the host this year and he introducedCarlo Vanini on the trumpet and Tony and Edda Picco peforming a play called“Toni e Mariute” written by Rina Del Nil Cralli. Gianni Ceschia, Rosemary Maraldoand Fernando Clabassi performed a poem called “La Notte Santa”.

After all the Christmas festivities are over with and the new year is here, we thenhave La Befana, another traditional custom at the Famee in January. With stockingslining the hallway to the Canada Room, vin burle’ simmering and pinza waiting tobe shared, the children gathered by the fire to learn about another custom andits significance, the bonfire (falo’). As most of us recall, the falo’ was lit on the eve

of the Epiphany in manytowns across Friuli. Thisold Roman custom signifiesthe death of old MotherNature and the birth of ayounger Mother Nature. The children read a poemabout the Befana andcalled her to make hergrand entrance. As theBefana moved among thechildren, she distributedsweets, tangerines andwalnuts and addressedthem with praise and promises for good behaviour. A very special thank you toLuciana Pol Bodetto and Gianna Grigio for supplying the delicious pinza, and tothe Women’s Auxiliary for organizing the event. Among our guests, we werehonoured to have a visitor from Italy, Sara Del Zuanne, who was very impressedto see that our traditions were being imparted to our young.

Alberto De Rosa.

FRIULI F.C.

Who says that members’ meetings are dry and boring? EveryNovember at the members’ meeting, after the serious discussionshave taken place, the smell of roasting chestnuts fills Friuli Halland the members are treated to fresh, roasted ‘castagne con untaiut di vin’.

This is a tradition that has continued at the Famee for manydecades and marks the turning point between the somber moodof “Il Giorno dei Morti’ on November 1st and Christmas which isjust around the corner. At the end of the evening an impromptuchoir breaks out with some traditional Furlan songs.
