Brother Knights, Catholic Gentlemen,
Fall officially is upon us, which means football, the begin-
ning of fall weather (hopefully), and a flurry of Council ac-
tivities. The first of which is our annual Campaign for Peo-ple with Intellectual Disabilities. The first weekend will be Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday (October 7th, 8th, and 9th) at the Walmart Supercenter on South
Memorial Parkway. The next session will be the weekend of October 21st, 22nd,
and 23rd at the Kroger in the Logan Square Shopping Center. The last session is the weekend of November 12th following Mass. Volunteers are still needed
for various time slots so please visit the SignUpGenius site, or contact the pro-
ject coordinator Mike Rose (256-213-2876).
In addition, Columbus Day is on October 10, which remembers Christopher
Columbus’ arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. Columbus Day origi-
nated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. In April 1937, as a result of lobbing by the Knights of Co-
lumbus and the New York City Italian leader Generoso Pope, the United States
Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed October 12 a
federal holiday under the name Columbus Day.
Finally, our Council will be hosting a 2nd and 3rd Degree Exemplification on Oc-
tober 15th. The 2nd and 3rd Degree ceremonies will begin at 1:00 and 2:30 PM, respectively. Please consider supporting your fellow Knights by attending one
or both of these events, and to re-experience these events again.
As always, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those
less fortunate, and pray for those in need.
Vivat Jesus,
Steve Gentz

The officers and members of Council 11672 wish a
Happy Birthday to the following members who have
birthdays in October:
Knight of the Month
The Knight of the Month
for September is Harry O’Beirne.
Harry, received his 1st
Degree Exemplification in 1961 and is recognized
this month for his sus-
tained support to our Council. Medical issues
prevent Harry from regu-
larly attending meetings,
but his interest and en-couragement to the
Council and its’ members
cannot be understated.
Harry is a unique exam-ple of a member helping
maintain a strong Coun-
cil from every aspect and he provides a rare model
to aspire to where his
challenges are secondary to helping his fellow
Knights. With every
Knight of the Month, keep Harry in your
prayers and if you see
him, please extend your
hand in heart filled ap-preciation and thanks.
Family of the Month
The Family of the Month
for September 2016 is the Tim Sullivan family. The
Council would like to
recognize Tim and his wife Michele for their
continued support to the
Knights of Columbus, the Church, and the Par-
ish and general commu-
nities. Tim and Michele
have a special relation-ship and caring for oth-
ers, both within and out-
side the Church and
Council. They have long supported those pursu-
ing the Religious Orders,
especially our sponsored
Seminarian, Josh Altonji. Tim and Michele expend
considerable effort in
helping others. An ex-ample of Tim's and Mich-
ele's effort includes men-
toring our youth in their volunteer work to help
them build character and
develop a life-long com-mitment to others.
Council 11672 recog-
nizes the Sullivan family
for their longstanding commitment of the
Knights of Columbus
core principals of Char-ity, Unity, and Frater-
nity.

The second Monday in Octo-
ber is designated in the
United States as Columbus
Day. This day commemo-
rates Christopher Colum-bus' first voyage and sight-
ing of the Americas on Octo-
ber 12, 1492. However, Co-
lumbus Day as a federal
holiday was not officially recognized until 1937.
The first Columbus Day
celebration took place in
1792, when New York’s Co-
lumbian Order held an
event to commemorate the historic landing’s 300th an-
niversary. Taking pride in
Columbus’ birthplace and
faith, Italian and Catholic
communities in various
parts of the country began organizing annual religious
ceremonies and parades.
Beginning on October 12,
1866, New York City's Ital-
ian population organized a celebration of the 'discovery'
of America. This yearly cele-
bration spread to other cit-
ies and became known as
Columbus Day in San Fran-
cisco in 1869.
In 1892, President Benja-
min Harrison issued a proc-
lamation encouraging
Americans to mark the
400th anniversary of Co-
lumbus’ voyage with patri-otic festivities and a statue
of Columbus was raised at
Columbus Avenue in New
York City. Further, at the
Columbian Exposition held in Chicago that year, repli-
cas of Columbus' three
ships were displayed. Italian
-Americans were key in the
creation of Columbus Day.
Colorado became the first state to observe an official
Columbus Day in 1905.
Over time other states fol-
lowed.
In 1937, President Franklin
D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a national
holiday, largely as a result
of intense lobbying by the
Knights of Columbus, an
influential Catholic fraternal benefits organization.
In 1971, the federal holiday
was officially changed by
Congress to be observed on
the second Monday in Octo-
ber.

Council Charity Contributions for September The Council made the following charitable contributions this past month:
Father's Discretionary Fund $ 300
Rose of Sharon $ 400
G.S. Backpack Program $ 250
Catholic Center of Concern $ 350
Community Free Dental Clinic $ 250
G.S. Pro-Life Committee $ 300
We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and there would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
One last thought on English! One can spell fish
‘ghitia’
Gh as in enough
The short “i” as in initiative
Ti as in initiate
The Queen’s English is rather quite a quandary, say
what!

Prayer to the Queen of Peace
O Queen of Peace: it is you who have placed the Rosary in our hands. It is you who bid us to recite it daily. By the power of the Family Rosary we beseech you to obtain peace for us--peace within our hearts, our homes, our country, and throughout the world. Through the daily recitation of the Family Rosary we beg you to keep sin from our souls, enmities from our hearts, and war from our shores. By the graces received from the devotion of the Family Rosary we pray to be made helpful to one another in following the paths of virtue so that we may be found worthy to be called children of your family, children of your home. Amen.
By Tradition, the Catholic Church
dedicates the month of October to the
holy rosary, one of the best known of
all Catholic devotions. The Feast of
Our Lady of the Rosary is October 7. As knights we should be the spiritual
leaders of our families. To take on
this leadership role, one of the best
ways would be to pray the Rosary
every day with our family. Since Pope Francis has ask us to pray for peace,
we should also say the attached
prayer to the Queen of Peace.

September Questions and Answers:
1. What three difference
is there between ice
cream and frozen yogurt?
Ice cream was intro-
duced into the United States in 1776, and was
well received and became
popular immediately.
Frozen yogurt was in-
troduced in to the United State in 1970, but was not
well received, as people did
not care for the taste. It
took over 10 years to im-
prove the taste so people
seemed to like it. It also helped that people were
looking for healthier foods.
Frozen yogurt is also
made with probiotics
where ice cream is not.
2. What is the oldest
U. S. military medal in
continuous use?
It is the Badge of Mili-
tary Merit.
3. What is the Badge of Military Merit called to-
day?
It is called the Purple
Heart.
4. How many men did
George Washington award the Badge of Military
Merit to?
He awarded it to three
sergeants.
5. Who were they?
On May 3, 1783:
Sergeant William
Brown5th Connecticut
Regiment of the Connecti-
cut Line.
Sergeant Elijah Chur-
chill 2nd Continental Light
Dragoons.
On June 10, 1783
Sergeant Daniel Bissell
2nd Connecticut Regi-
ment of the Connecticut
Line
6. Were there any other
recipients of the Badge of
Military Merit?
While researching the
Purple Heart Medal at the
National Archives, during
his tenure as a National Americanism Officer for
Military Order of the Pur-
ple Heart (1985-2011) Ron
Siebels (Past National
Commander), discovered
that while these three sol-diers were most likely the
first to receive the Badge of
Military Merit, discharge
certificates of other Revolu-
tionary War soldiers indi-
cate that they also received the "Badge of Merit" for
their years of faithful ser-
vice.
7. What was the word
used by ancient Egyp-
tians when referring to
their king (Pharaoh as we
use today)?
The word used by the
ancient Egyptians when
referring to their king was
“nesu.”
8. Where did the word
Pharaoh come from?
The word came from
Greek language, which was
a derivative of ‘Par-aa’
meaning great house. Par-
aa was the household of the kings of Egypt. The
word Pharaoh was also
used in the Bible to refer to
the kings of Egypt.
9. When was the first saint canonization by a
Pope?
In the first eight or nine
centuries, there was no
centralized process for can-
onization of a saint. In-stead, sainthood depended
upon popular affirmation
or “spontaneous local attri-
bution.” It wasn’t until
993 that Pope John XV
canonized the first saint. It was approximately six
hundred years later that
the process was centralized
into a formal process,
when Pope Sixtus V estab-lished the Congregation for
the Causes of Saints in
1588. Note: Answer

Exchange
10. Who was the first
saint canonized?
St. Ulric was born at
Augsburg, Germany in 890
and died in 973. He was
educated at St. Gall Abbey in Switzerland by his un-
cle, St. Adalbeo, bishop of
Augsburg. St. Ulric suc-
ceeded to the See as
bishop in 923. When
Augsburg was plundered and ravaged by the Mag-
yars, he led its inhabitants
in the task of rebuilding
the city and its cathedral.
In his old age, he retired to St. Gall, named his
nephew as his successor,
and was accused of nepo-
tism for his action. His
canonization by Pope John
XV in 993 is the first re-corded canonization by a
Pope. His feast day is July
4th.
He is the patron saint
against birth complica-
tions, against faintness, against fever, against mice
and moles, for happy
death, and weavers. He is
also the patron saint of the
Diocese of Augsburg, Ger-many.
