Also international scholarfrom Iran, maulana M. AghaMehdvipuri said that in thepresent time the message ofImama Hussein is veryimportant and Karbala is alesson for Human kind.Alsohe stressed that Yazeed wasthe biggest terror forHumanity.Other eminentscholars such as MaulanaJenan Asghar from Iran andMaulana Jalal from Iraq alsospread light on Karbala.

Dharam Dev Anand (bornSeptember 26, 1923), betterknown simply as Dev Anand,is a legendary IndianBollywood actor and filmproducer. In his heyday as astar, he was considered theepitome of the suave, urbangentleman.

Dev is the second of threebrothers who were active inBollywood. His elder brotherChetan Anand was a filmdirector, as was his youngerbrother, Vijay Anand. Hiselder brother Chetan Anandis credited to bringing him andyounger brother Vijay Anandinto the film world. Thoughhe did launch his son SuneilAnand in films with "Anandaur Anand", the film andSuneil did not get noticed.

Dev was born DevduttPishorimal Anand inGurdaspur in undividedPunjab to a well-to-doadvocate, Pishorimal Anand.He graduated in Englishliterature from theGovernment College, Lahore(now in Pakistan). His lovefor acting made him leave hishometown for the centre ofthe Hindi film industry,Mumbai. Dev began hiscareer in the military censoroffice at Churchgate ,Mumbai, for a salary of Rs.160.

He was soon offered abreak as an actor by PrabhatTalkies to star in their "HumEk Hain" (1946). Whileshooting for the film in Pune,Dev struck a friendship withfellow actor Guru Dutt. Soon,they were swapping shirts,

double dating and sharingdreams. They made a pact:if Dev produced a film, GuruDutt would direct it; if GuruDutt produced a film, Devwould act in it.

Dev was offered his firstbig break by Ashok Kumar,his favourite star. Kumarspotted Dev hanging aroundin the studios and picked himas the hero for the BombayTalkies production, "Ziddi",costarring Kamini Kaushal(1948) which became asuccess.

In 1949, he turnedproducer and launched hisown "banner" Navketan,which continues to churn outmovies year after year.Though his maiden attempt atdirection, "Prem Pujari",flopped, his second directorialeffort "Hare Rama HareKrishna" in the 1970's withZeenat Aman was a bigsuccess.

As promised, Dev invitedGuru Dutt to direct the crimethriller "Baazi" in 1951.Lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi'ssong Tadbeer se bigdi huyeetaqdeer bana le proved to beprophetic and Dev went onto become a star. His stylewas lapped up by the

audience and was widelyimitated. He starred in astring of box office successesfor the remainder of the1950's and some of his hitfilms include " Munimji","CID", "Paying Guest","Gambler", "Tere Ghar keSaamne" and "Kaala Pani".

He also played a fewcharacters with a negativeshade, like in "Jaal" (1952).His films "Rahee" and"Aandhiyan", were screenedthere along with Raj Kapoor's"Awaara". In the same year,"Taxi Driver" was declared ahit. Dev's heroine wasKalpana Kartik again, and thetwo decided to marry in aquiet ceremony.

Marriage and the birth ofson Suneil in 1956 did notaffect Dev's career. A rapid-fire style of dialogue delivery,an array of hats, and apenchant for nodding whilespeaking became Dev's stylein films like "Munimji", "CID"and "Paying Guest". His stylewas lapped up by theaudience and was widelyimitated. He starred in astring of box office successesfor the remainder of the1950s.

Despite his characteristicstyle, Dev's detractors castaspersions on his actingabilities and questioned hisinclusion in the hallowed RajKapoor-Dilip Kumar league.Dev made them eat humblepie with his class act in "KalaPani"(1958), as the son whois willing to go to any lengths— including sweet-talking acourtesan into believing he isin love with her — to clear hisframed father's name. Hewon the Best Actor Award forthe film.

He was romanticallyinvolved with singer-actress

Suraiya and the two of thempaired in six films together.During the shooting of a song,a boat capsized and DevAnand saved Suraiya fromdrowning. She fell in love withhim but her grandmotheropposed the relationship.Suraiya remained unmarriedall her life.

His first film in colour,"Guide" with WaheedaRehman was based on thenovel of the same name by R.K. Narayan. The impetus formaking a film from the bookcame from Dev Anandhimself, and he met andpersuaded Narayan to give hisassent to the project. DevAnand tapped his friends inHollywood to lauch an Indo-US coproduction that wasshot in Hindi and Englishsimultaneously and wasreleased in 1965. This isregarded by many as his bestwork till date.

"Guide", directed byyounger brother Vijay Anand,silenced the staunchest ofcritics. Dev played Raju, avoluble guide who supportsRosy (Waheeda) in her bid forfreedom; but is not abovethoughtlessly exploiting her forpersonal gains. Combiningstyle with substance, Devgave an affectingperformance as a mangrappling with his emotions inhis passage through love,shame and salvation.

"Guide" was Dev'screative acme. He reunitedwith Vijay Anand for themuch-hyped "Jewel Thief",featuring a bevy of beautiesled by Vyjayanthimala andincluding Tanuja, AnjuMahendru, Faryal and Helen.

Their next collaboration,"Johnny Mera Naam"(1970)was a big hit. The film was

released in the same year asRaj Kapoor's magnum 'flopus'"Mera Naam Joker" (it was acommercial failure). UnlikeRaj and Dilip who sloweddown in the Seventies, Devcontinued to be a romantichero.

His maiden attempt atdirection, the espionagedrama, "Prem Pujari" flopped,but Dev got lucky with hissophomore directorial effort"Hare Rama Hare Krishna".It talked about the prevalenthippie cult. Zeenat Aman, whoplayed the mini-skirt sporting,pot-smoking protagonistJanice, became an overnightsensation. Dev also becameknown as a filmmaker oftrenchantly topical themes.

The presence of hisdiscoveries — the zestfulZeenat and later, the elfin TinaMunim (heroine of Dev's lastrecognised hit "Des Pardes"in 1978) — fuelled Dev'simage as the evergreen stareven when he was well intohis fifties.

Dev Anand's films are bestknown for their great music.Some of the most popularBollywood songs werepicturized on him. Hisassociation with musiccomposers - O. P. Nayyar,Sachin Dev Burman and hisson Rahul Dev Burman,lyricists - Majrooh Sultanpuri,Neeraj, Shailendra, andplayback singer MohammadRafi and Kishore Kumarproduced some of the bestsongs in the Bollywoodhistory.

Dev Anand is one of thosefew Indian actors/filmmakerswho are politically aware andactive and are ready to standup for the cause that is dearto them. He was the one wholed a group of film personalitieswho stood up against theInternal Emergency imposedby the then Prime Minister ofIndia, Indira Gandhi. Heactively campaigned againsther with his supporters inIndian parliamentary electionsin 1977 while very few amongthe film fraternity showed thecourage to fight against theauthoritarian regime.

Parwani used to mount his blackstallion each morning and ridealong the hilly terrain of theVindhya and Aravalli mountainranges to Sawai Madhopur, atown in the northwestern regionof Rajasthan. His mission: Todeliver the Rajasthan Patrika, atop-selling Hindi newspaper, tothe doorsteps of more than 150

households. In the course of his nine-hour workdays, healways found time to juggle an assortment of tasks --gossiping with the locals, running errands for many of them(for a fee) and scribbling notes about village affairs on adusty pad to relay back to the paper's editors. All the while,he was sure to put in a plug for his newspaper wheneverhe came across someone new in town.

That's still the case today, except for one difference:Parwani's horse, which was becoming too expensive tomaintain, has been swapped for a moped -- the utilityvehicle of choice in rural India -- provided by RajasthanPatrika as a reward for his diligence. A delivery personlike Parwani "doubles up as a journalist and garners newsubscriptions for us," says Arvind Kalia, marketing andbrand communications head at the Jaipur-based RajasthanPatrika publishing house, whose paper has a pan-Indiancirculation of two million copies a day. "Parwani is one ofour most resourceful employees."

Rajasthan Patrika isn't the only publishing house tappingthe resourcefulness of rural India. In fact, at a time whennewspapers are folding in other countries, India's mediascene is admirably buoyant, thanks to the country'sburgeoning rural, local-language newspapers. Accordingto the New Delhi-based Indian Newspaper Society, Indiahas 62,000 newspapers, with a staggering 90% of them inlocal languages. Indian news publishers are doing relativelywell, precisely "because they've spread their wings tosmaller towns," says Divya Radhakrishnan, president ofTME, the media division of Mumbai-based advertisingagency Rediffusion-Y&R.

Corruption is both a majorcause and a result of povertyaround the world. It occursat all levels of society, fromlocal and nationalgovernments, civil society,judiciary functions, large andsmall businesses, military andother services and so on.

Corruption affects thepoorest the most, in rich orpoor nations, though allelements of society areaffected in some way ascorruption underminespolitical development,democracy, economicdevelopment, theenvironment, people's healthand more.

But it isn't just ingovernments that corruptionis found; it can permeatethrough society.

The issue of corruption isvery much inter-related withother issues. At a global level,the "international"(Washington Consensus-influenced) economic systemthat has shaped the currentform of globalization in thepast decades requires further

scrutiny for it has also createdconditions wherebycorruption can flourish andexacerbate the conditions ofpeople around the world whoalready have little say abouttheir own destiny. At anational level, people'seffective participation andrepresentation in society canbe undermined by corruption,while at local levels,corruption can make day today lives more painful for allaffected.

A difficult thing tomeasure or compare,however, is the impact ofcorruption on poverty versusthe effects of inequalities thatare structured into law, suchas unequal trade agreements,structural adjustment policies,

so-called "free" tradeagreements and so on. It iseasier to see corruption. It isharder to see these othermore formal, even legalforms of "corruption." It iseasy to assume that these arenot even issues because theyare part of the laws andinstitutions that governnational and internationalcommunities and many of uswill be accustomed to it-it ishow it works, so to speak.Those deeper aspects arediscussed in other parts ofthis web site's section ontrade, economy, & relatedissues.

That is not to belittle theissue of corruption, however,for its impacts are enormoustoo.

The event wasinaugurated by Director, Dr.Sachin S. Vernekar and Mr.Rajesh Setia, Vice President"United Brethren"- TheAlumni Association ofBVIMR. It was followed bythe release of the college'sjournal "BVIMRMANAGEMENT EDGE"(January-June 2012 Issue)and inauguration of AlumniE-Newsletter. Dr. SachinS.Vernekar cordiallywelcomed all the Alumni

students from the variousbatches. He congratulatedthat Bharati VidyapeethUniversity has beenreaccredited with "A" Gradeby NAAC. BVIMR hasbeen ranked in Top 40 B-Schools in India, Top B-Schools in North India and2nd in Delhi by Careers 360and for its constantEndeavour to achieveprofessional excellence hasbeen awarded with TopPosition in BBA/BCA byBusiness and ManagementChronicle in Delhi NCR.
