SEEING RED? IT MUST BE FRIDAY AT SPANISH COVE Red shirts of all kinds, RED jewelry, RED scarves, RED jackets
and RED caps – no, it isn’t an OU football day, it’s any Friday at
Spanish Cove.
In 2007, Debbie Miller, Director of Wellness and Resident
Relations, learned about the “Wearing of the RED” to honor the men
and women serving our country in the armed services. She suggested
the idea to Spanish Cove residents who enthusiastically agreed, and it’s
RED everywhere you look on Fridays until our forces come back home.
Briefly, the origin of the “Wearing of the RED” goes like this –
Southwest Airlines began supporting “RED FRIDAYS” after one of
their representatives witnessed a group of soldiers at the airline terminal
being cheered and applauded by other passengers as the servicemen headed
toward their gate. Suddenly a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran
up to one of the male soldiers. As he kneeled down to say “hi,” she asked if
he would give something to her daddy for her. The young soldier, probably in
his early 20’s, said he would try. The little girl grabbed his neck and gave him
the biggest hug and kissed him on the cheek.
The child’s mother explained that her daughter, Courtney, missed her
daddy who is a Marine serving in Iraq for the past 11 months. One of the other
servicemen in the group pulled out a military-looking walkie-talkie. After the
soldiers huddled a few minutes, the young soldier turned back to Courtney and
told her, “I just spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.” He then
hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He also told her, “Your daddy loves
you and will be coming home soon.”
The young soldier stood and saluted the tearful mother and her child. As he
walked toward the gate, he blew a kiss to them as tears rolled down his cheeks.
Southwest Airlines adopted “Wearing RED on Fridays” as their way
of showing patriotism and support of our troops. After the article briefly
summarized above, appeared on the internet, the movement has spread
throughout the U.S.A.
Joining Southwest Airlines’ lead by wearing RED is one way we all can show
our patriotism and support of our troops. If you visit Spanish Cove on any
Friday, you’ll be seeing RED!

One of my all-time favorite movies is Forrest
Gump. It characterizes how even a simple-
minded person can make a difference in the world.
Throughout the movie, Forrest unwittingly becomes
part of great moments in history during the second
half of the 20th century. The movie begs the question
about whether your destiny is predetermined or the
result of choices made along the way.
Perhaps the best line of the movie is near the end
when Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) is standing at the gravesite of his wife Jenny
(played by Robin Wright). He says, “Jenny, I don’t know if Momma was right or
if, if it’s Lieutenant Dan. I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just
floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I think maybe it’s both. Maybe both
is happening at the same time.”
We often use fate and destiny as interchangeable words although they might
not always be. Both have a fixed beginning and ending in a life. Yet, the period in
between can be changed in a moment of time by personal choice. Are we predestined
to make a choice based on fate or was our fate created by the choices we made?
My own distinction between fate and destiny is fairly simple. Fate is not getting to
choose your parents, culture or how the world treats you. Fate is a situation beyond your
control. Destiny, on the other hand, is what you choose to do despite the things you
cannot control. Destiny is the reflection of your beliefs; how you want to be, what you
want to do and how you want to live. In essence, your destiny is the product of your faith,
whatever your faith may be.
The great thing about faith is that it can move mountains. It is the substance of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It has the ability to alter fate and has
done so for many who have lived to a long age. Ultimately, destiny and fate will collide
in our end but it is often faith that gives us permission to breathe our last breath.
There is a little bit of Forrest Gump in all of us. Like him, we do the best we can
with what we have. We may or may not be as simple-minded as Forrest but have every
opportunity to make lasting differences with our lives.
Whether you believe your destiny is predetermined or the result of personal
choice is among the great questions of life. It just seems to be a bit of both to me.
Here’s hoping your fateful journey is also a faithful journey!

Welcome New ResidentsELAINE BEWLEY
E laine Bewley grew up on a farm in Custer County that was
homesteaded by her great grandfather. She and her sister still
own the farm. Elaine graduated high school from Custer City in
1950. She married Dean after graduation as they dated since she was
14 and he was 17. Dean worked for Conoco on a seismograph crew
which required them to move frequently. They lived in Wyoming, Texas,
Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Mississippi, Louisiana, California and
Oklahoma. Their move to Yukon in 1978 was their 40th move in 28 years.
Elaine has been a member of Trinity Baptist Church since 1980 and is
very involved in Ladies Bible Study. She’s a member of the Trinity Quilters,
which provides quilts for children in DHS custody and foster care in Canadian
County. Elaine volunteers at Integris Canadian Valley Hospital in the Pastoral
Care Ministry and has for the last 10 years. She is also a member of the Central
Oklahoma Quilters Guild.
Dean passed away in January of this year and Elaine made the decision to
make Spanish Cove her home. She has made friends everywhere she’s lived and is
looking forward to making many friends at the Cove.
Elaine has a daughter who lives with her husband in Lawton and she has
three grandsons and 2 great grandsons. Elaine knows God has blessed her
with a great life and she knows his blessings will continue at Spanish Cove.

Life The Way You Want ItLIVING WELL – DRAGON BOAT PADDLING

Spanish Cove residents made Oklahoma history as the first ever Senior Dragon Boat paddling team on the Oklahoma River back in 2012. This fall will be
our seventh season paddling! Seniors now have their own category to compete in called the WISE Dragons! To be eligible to compete in the WISE category, you must be at least 60 years old or older. A dragon boat paddling team is made up of 10 or 20 people (depending on the size of the boat) who paddle to the beat of a drummer at the bow, while a steer person, at the stern, steers the boat. Dragon boat paddling can be purely recreational or a highly competitive sport. Dragon Boat paddling is a complete and total body workout. Paddlers work out their arms and shoulders, however, successful paddlers use their core, which provides leverage and reduces stress on the arms. Paddlers also use their legs to create a stronger stroke. Paddlers get that workout during practices, which generally last an hour to an hour and a half. A typical Dragon Boat paddling season is 10 weeks in the Spring or Fall. During those long practices, teams work on stroke technique, do a variety of drills, and practice for upcoming races. The OG&E Night Sprints Regatta Festival is this September 28 - 30. Our Fall Dragon Boat paddling team is preparing for the Regatta by mastering techniques, working together as a team and having more fun than you can imagine. Cove residents are invited to ride with us to a practice on Tuesday’s and watch or walk around.

VISION: There is nothing more beautiful on the 4th of July than the colors of the red, white, and blue coming from the American Flag being proudly displayed. It’s a time of families gathering to celebrate our freedom with fireworks and food. I can see the hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, the corn on the cob covered in butter, and apple pie topped with homemade ice cream. As the sun starts to set I picture crowds of people sitting on handmade quilts waiting for the dazzling display in the night sky to begin. Fireworks end the day with sparkles of color and the sounds of snap, crackle, and pop as they play, America the Beautiful.
INSPIRATION: But what is the most important part of this celebrated day? Is it the food and fireworks? No - it is the price our founding fathers paid for each of us to have our freedom. It is “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”-- The Declaration of Independence. This is the foundation of the celebration.
CALENDAR: You will have a chance to celebrate the 4th of July here at the Cove by joining us for a night full of fun. We will start the evening off with a BBQ dinner in the main dining room and then move to the rooftop for live music and drinks. We will end the night being dazzled by the beauty of the sparkling fireworks brought to you by the City of Yukon.
CHALLENGE: I challenge you to get a journal and write the part you had with countless others in helping to maintain our freedom. So one day, someone will read and appreciate the part you played in our right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
