Sharing our Vision, Strengthening our Society 2013 SER Conference
By: Alpha Alpha Chapter Twenty-eight members from Epsilon State arrived at the Gaylord-Palms Hotel in
Orlando, Florida, during the week of July 8-13 to participate in the 2013 Southeast
Regional Conference. State officers and other members designated by State President
Martha Turner attended pre-conference meetings and workshops on Monday through
Wednesday, and the 1st General Session took place on Wednesday night. The Cadet Honor
Guard from 463rd
Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol served as escorts for the eleven
Southeast Presidents. Dr. Hanna Fowler, SER Director (and the guest speaker at our state
convention this past March), presided over the opening session.
After the opening session, Florida members entertained, educated, and amused us with
dancers, singers, a ventriloquist, a dance band, and a historical overview of Florida’s 500
year history. A reception in the Emerald Plaza ended the celebration, at which we were
served special fruit drinks, key lime pie, fresh fruit kabobs, and fried conch.
On Thursday, Dr. Barbara Day presided over the 2nd
General Session. At this session
the keynote speaker, Sandra Ford Walston, author of COURAGE: The Heart and Spirit of
Every Woman/Reclaiming the Forgotten Virtue, spoke of her sixteen years of extensive
research that redefined courage and how women should acknowledge and recognize
courage within themselves.
At the Birthday Luncheon, Epsilon State’s Jerry Malone was one of three members
recognized for fifty-year membership. The Society headquarters’ administrators, Corlea
Plowman, Phyllis Hickey, Dr. Linda Eller, and Nita Scott, came together to present a
session on several aspects of Delta Kappa Gamma that ignited members’ passions about
the society.
During the day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday over fifty workshops were presented,
ranging from website management to fundraising. Four of these presentations were
presented by members of Epsilon State. On Thursday, past state president Donnis Poe
conducted a workshop on Google and its many uses. At the same time current president
Martha Turner and Kathye Blackburn got “All Shook Up” in their presentation on public
speaking. On Friday Mitzi Quinn and six members from Alpha Alpha took workshop
participants on a “Trip to Canterbury.” On Saturday Dr. Gwen Traylor conducted a
workshop on “Laura Ingalls Wilder: Her Life and Books.” Continued on page 3

Membership—The ♥ of our Society
Kathye Blackburn, 2nd
Vice President/Membership Chairman
As we begin this biennium, I want to remind each chapter of the membership forms that need to be turned in.
The first four forms below can be found on the State Website and are due on September 15. They are to be sent to the State
Membership Chairman:
September 15: Rose in Bloom (nominate a member who has been a member five years or more)
September 15: Rosebud (nominate a member who has been a member for less than five years)
September 15: Golden Rose Award (given to members who are 55 years or older who are still in the teaching
professional; a member can receive this award only one time)
September 15: 25 and 50 Member Recognition form (send in the form even if you don’t have anyone who
qualifies; check year on form to make sure your member qualifies this year for the recognition)
As needed: Form 6-Death of a Member form should be sent in as soon as the death occurs so that the member
can be remembered at the Celebration for Life ceremony at the State Convention; this form should
be sent in to State Membership Chairman
As needed: Form 11-Recommendation for Membership (this form is found on the International Website and is
interactive; this form is used by the chapters when recommending new members)

Key Chapter Action Sandra Pruitt, Recording Secretary
You will find the revised Key Chapter form on the state website. The form has deadline dates and the dates are in
order of the deadlines. Make sure that you send those items to the correct person. The Key Chapter form is only two pages
and is easy to complete. Check off items as they are completed. The electronic form is set up so that you can click the box
in front of each item and an “X” appears. The form is locked so that you can only do that. Have your chapter members help
you complete the form. This will increase awareness of all aspects of the Society. The deadline is February 1, 2014. Send
the form by mail to Sandra Pruitt, 2130 S. Avenue F, Crowley, LA 70526 or email to [email protected].
Chapters are not eligible for this award if the form is not received by the deadline. If you have any questions or suggestions,
please contact me by phone at 337-788-2669 or by email.
Creating Infinite Possibilities for Your Chapter Judy Rongey, 1
st Vice President
The new website for DKG has valuable resources to create infinite possibilities for your chapter. There are many
resources for chapter and state committees found under the heading “Library.” For the Educational Excellence Committee,
there is a six page collection of programs and activities developed to support the three goals of the Educational Excellence
Committee. One idea developed to advance educational excellence was to create a book of “Tips of Survival” to support
early career educators. Check out this collection for programs to empower women. Read about chapters using Skype to
empower their members by creating joint meetings. To increase global awareness, some chapters use Schools for Africa
videos. Check the website www.schoolsforafrica.org/ for information. Also under the Committees heading found on the
DKG website a “Schools for Africa” section where you can find a downloadable contribution form for the Schools for
Africa project. Check out www.dkg.org to find a vast array of resources to create programs that can strengthen your chapter
and our society.

Chapter Mission: Blast Out of the Past Martha Turner, Epsilon State President
Empowering and encouraging—the conference in Orlando was
great…great speakers, great workshops (4 from Louisiana), and great food.
I spent two and a half days in State President training, getting to know the
other state presidents from the Southeast Region, our International
President—Dr. Beverly Helms, and the staff from International. It was
during this time we discussed the challenges that DKG and the other states
were facing: membership, programs, finance, traditions, resistance to
changing with the times. Many of these states were also facing the
challenges in education similar to ours in Louisiana with Common Core
State Standards and evaluation programs like COMPASS, all of which
affect our organization and our chapters.
We did get a night off on Friday, so Jerry Malone, Judy Rongey, Kathye Blackburn, and I took off to go to the
Epcot Center. It was there where Kathye and I rode the ride “Space Mission.” Mars-bound cadets had to choose
from two levels of training…Orange or Green teams. The Orange Team experience uses a centrifuge that spins
and tilts to simulate speed and G-forces during launch and re-entry. The Green Team experience is a motion
simulator ride that does not spin and is less likely to cause motion sickness. Kathye and I chose Orange. I felt the
skin pull away from my face. I tightened my harness in mid-trip by two notches while avoiding asteroids and
pushing buttons as the “commander.” Glad to stay on Mars, not wanting to return to Earth—the ride was over.
Afterwards I was a little wobbly and needed to sit down for a few minutes to recover. Would I do it again?
Absolutely!
You might ask what in the world this has to do with Delta Kappa Gamma. I am asking you to face the
challenges your chapter may be experiencing by offering new challenges: honor your membership in new ways,
focus on programs that will encourage attendance, plan projects to make a difference in your community, reach
out beyond your group for members, advertise for outstanding teachers to join, break away from traditions that
are damaging your chapter. If you choose to accept this mission, you have been given permission to make
changes and to “Blast Out of the Past” in an attempt to meet the needs of your chapter.
: Lights, Camera, Action—Together Creating Infinite Possibilities.
Continued from page 1….
The 3rd
General Session was presided over by Dr. Jensi Souders, and the keynote speaker was Kate Campbell
Stevenson. She evoked the characters of three dynamic women who challenged the traditional expectations of
their time. Ms. Stevenson portrayed Bessie Coleman, the first African-American pilot, Eleanor Roosevelt, and
Rachael Carson. Her portrayal revealed how these women continue to be an inspiration.
Siobban “Sam” Bennett, president and CEO of Women’s Campaign Fund, was the US Forum speaker. Sam is
the current President and CEO of the “She Should Run Foundation,” doubling the organization’s budget outreach
to every state in the country.
Saturday’s 4th
General Session was enriched with Carolyn Fennell’s keynote address, “Sheroes Strengthening
Our Society—a Call to Action.” All members were called upon to pull out the red cape and find their inner
“shero.”
The convention ended Saturday evening at the President’s Banquet. Outgoing state presidents and incoming
state presidents were recognized, and Dr. Beverly Helms, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
President, spoke after dinner on “Sharing Our Vision…Strengthening Our Society.” As members circled the room
to join hands and sing the Delta Kappa Gamma Song, we could not help recognizing how special it is to belong to
this group of key women educators. We left inspired to share our vision and to strengthen our society.

Dear Epsilon State Members,
What a wonderful time I had visiting with you at the Epsilon State Convention in March.
Your convention was most impressive and you are certainly reaching out to make an impact in
education with the “Friends of Education Award” and the work of the Epsilon State’s
Legislative Committee. The resolution voicing concerns was powerful and I hope to see other
states making the same commitment.
DKG Purposes II and V came to life as Epsilon State recognized recipients of
scholarships stipends and grants. Special recognitions were given to Educators of the Year,
National Board Certified Teachers, Chapter Newsletter Awards, Key Chapter Awards, and
members’ years of service to DKG.
Thank you for the warm, genuine fellowship you gave me during my visit. I know Epsilon
State will continue to have an impact in Louisiana and in DKG.

There were 546 Attendees (including 33 from Louisiana) who celebrated Florida’s 500th
Birthday.
July 10-13, 2013 was the Southeast Regional Conference at the Gaylord Palms Resort where we would stay.
A balcony overlooking a splashing waterfall amidst a tropical garden provided a beautiful sight.
What wonderful sounds and excitement … movin’ and groovin’ on Florida Night.
The Reception at the Emerald Plaza Atrium offered miniature key lime pie, fruit kabobs, and conch fritters also.
We listened to Steel Kettle Drums by the Pan Handlers … some tunes fast … others slow.
Welcoming us was Major Cynthia Williams, 2nd
Highest Ranking Female in the Florida Highway Patrol … at the General
Session where we thoroughly enjoyed the Keynote Speakers who had much to share.
Epsilon State sat together at each function and for Roll Call, we stood and sang “You Are My Sunshine” with much fanfare.
At the Birthday Luncheon our own Jerry Malone was recognized as one of three who had been a member 50 years or more
and sat in a special place.
Louisiana had three Past State Presidents in attendance. They were Virgie Dronet, Jerry Malone, and Donnis Poe with a smile
on each one’s face.
The 2013 Educator’s Award was presented to Sara Lawrence Lightfoot for her book EXIT: The Ending That Set Us Free.
First Timers numbered 100 plus from all eleven states … what a sight to see.
Two places of interest were “Special Effects Info Fair” exhibited by International Committees to note.
Another was “Islands of Adventure Market” (Jewelry, Chocolates, Bell Collections) where we spoke to Authors about books
they wrote.
Southeast Regional Director Hanna Fowler executed a fabulous Southeast “Experience.”
Chairman Carrie Frye (a Louisiana native) and International President Dr. Beverly Helms gave us a memorable Southeast
Conference.
Did we have Louisiana members conducting workshops you ask?
Let me tell you how proud we were to watch them complete their task!
President Martha Turner and 2nd
Vice President Kathye Blackburn demonstrated “All Shook Up
Therapy” (Public Speaking).
Past State President Donnis Poe shared “Google My Work”
Mitzi Quinn and Alpha Alpha rendered “A Trip to Canterbury”
Gwen Traylor presented “Laura Ingalls Wilder: Her Life and Books”
We remember Keynote Speaker Sandra Ford Walston as the “Expert on Courage.”
Kate Campbell Stevenson was a one-woman musical production with costume changes and an Ambassador of Women’s
Heritage.
“Sam” Bennett addressed the U.S. Forum as CEO of “The She Should Run Foundation.”
While Carolyn Fennell was Peter Jennings’ ABC assistant in London, a Disney World publicist, and the Public Affairs
Director and Orlando Authority on Aviation.
Women of the Past formed stepping stones to further the vision of Future “Sheroes”.
The Keynote Speakers as well as Leaders are Women Heroes.
In the Convention Program we found a Listing of familiar names from our own State who made us proud and took a stand.
Regional Directors: Bea Davis (1960-62), Charlotte Jaynes (1970-72), and Pat Bray (1988-90) …
National Achievement Award Recipients: May Allen (1943) and Mary Thornton (1962).
From our Song … “Deeds of others now we’re reaping, we for others stand.
To us Pioneers have given
We return their gifts to heaven
Work for others is the leaven
That inspires our band.”
The JW Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana will host our next Convention in 2014.
We go to the Westin Harbor Resort in Savannah, Georgia for the SE Regional in 2015.
The Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee will welcome us to the 2016 scene.

News from Upsilon Chapter
“OUTFITTING OKLAHOMA”
The project began on May 21 when Mary E. Le Blanc woke up from a dream with a possible plan to carry out her
vision. After seeing the devastation that was shown the previous night on the ABC National News of the tornado that
struck Moore, OK, she set the wheels in motion. The right ingredients and logistics were put into place. Joe Peoples of the
Westwego Police Dept. offered his services. A 53’ long, 10’ high, and 8’ wide trailer was acquired from Arabie trucking
in Thibodaux. Moya Collins of NOLA Box Company offered over a thousand boxes. The Krewe of King Arthur,
industries, businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals rallied to help.
9
Epsilon State leaders Donnis Poe, Judy Rongey, Loretta Brehm, and Terri Meaney spread the word for needed
relief items and school supplies to restart the seven destroyed schools. Members from chapters in the Greater New Orleans
Area Council and South District donated clothes, games, supplies, gift cards, and manpower. At the June transition
meeting, chapters throughout the state joined in the effort to help fellow sisters in Gamma State, where members in Alpha
Chi live and work.
With the help of Monica Wertz communicating with Plaquemines Parish, the word was out. The Times-Picayune
and WWL-TV provided coverage for increased public awareness and support. Monica donated truckloads of supplies and
lent her expertise to pack along with Joe Peoples the 18-wheeler. After three weeks of sorting and packing, the truck was
full of supplies and ready to leave. Monica said, "We need to follow the truck to Moore." (Monica was inspired by her
experiences as principal of Belle Chasse High school when Category 5 Hurricane Katrina hit. Her school was a recipient
of relief supplies from sisters of Chi State (CA). Those DKG sisters sent three trucks across the United States to south
Louisiana parishes that were devastated from Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.)
Changing her busy schedule as Human Resource Director in Plaquemines Parish, Monica drove Mary and Loretta
to Moore, OK, to help unload all the supplies. The three members of Upsilon Chapter left Westwego on Friday afternoon.
As they pulled into Moore, the devastation was unbelievable. On Sunday morning at 8, they were met by 80+ volunteers
at Heritage Trails Elementary School. The volunteers formed a human chain and unloaded the truck in less than an hour.
Some of the volunteers included DKG members. Wertz said, “This was the greatest feeling in the world, the feeling of
being able to give to others and receive a sense of gratitude in return.”
The experience of being able to deliver for so many members of Epsilon State filled their hearts.
Le Blanc said, “May God bless all our DKG sisters that gave from their hearts.” How gracious our DKG sisters were
when called to action. Epsilon State shined to support others in need. What an outstanding job!
The effort continues. Checks made payable to Moore Public Schools Donation Center Tornado Relief Center, c/o
250 La. St., Westwego, LA 70094-4114 are still being collected. Mary Le Blanc continues her work by sending in checks
and acknowledging members for their gifts. The checks will be sent directly to Dr. Perez from Epsilon State. Thank you
for participating in this endeavor.

Bea Davis Leadership Seminar 2013
The Wesley Conference Center in Woodworth, Louisiana, was the perfect setting for the Bea Davis
Leadership Seminar held on June 7-9. The seminar theme, “Bea” Your Best Self, used the fleur-de-lis as a
symbol to remind participants to take care of three areas of their lives: mind, body, and soul. Information, tips
and strategies to balance those areas were shared throughout the seminar. Members of the Class of 2013
included:
Ashley Allen, Alpha Alpha (NE)
Kay Bradford, Theta (NE)
Dawn Chaisson, Chi (SW)
Dolores Hackler, Alpha Sigma (NW)
Paula Hotard, Kappa (S)
Katherine Jackson, Psi (C)
Yvonne Normand, Alpha Zeta (SW)
Betsy Warwick, Alpha Upsilon (C)
2011-13 State President Donnis Poe kicked off the seminar on Friday evening with a Spectrum
Personality Development workshop to focus on the mind of a leader. During the interactive workshop,
participants were introduced to the different personality styles using the language of color (Blue, Green, Gold
and Orange). They gained an understanding of their own strengths, needs, and motivators, while also learning to
value the differences among the people around them. Not only did they identify their primary color
temperament, they discovered whether they were introverts or extroverts.
On Saturday morning, Robbie Alford from Eagles Training provided a leadership training workshop.
During the workshop, Robbie shared valuable information and strategies for nurturing the soul of a leader.
Participants felt encouraged and energized as they reflected upon their own leadership path and developed goals
for the future. The Saturday afternoon sessions offered participants the opportunity to focus on the body of a
leader. Sessions focused on strategies for stress management and tips for health and wellness and were led by
Leadership Development Committee Members, Lori Myers, and Glenetta Shuey. Activities ranged from
making sugar scrubs to pamper oneself to enjoying a fun Zumba session.
The day was topped off with an opportunity for seminar participants to demonstrate their creativity by making their very own bead art from recycled Mardi Gras beads.
At the closing ceremony on Sunday morning, participants were challenged by 2013-2015 State President
Martha Turner to utilize their leadership skills to become more engaged in Delta Kappa Gamma at the local and
state level. Lori Myers, Leadership Development Committee Chair, and Glenetta Shuey, Leadership
Development Committee Member, assisted Martha in distributing the certificates of completion, Bea Davis
Leadership pins, and a fleur-de-lis to commemorate their attendance and participation in the 2013 Seminar.
The next Bea Davis Leadership Seminar will be held in June 2015. Please start early encouraging
members to apply for this outstanding leadership experience!

Presidents, please bring math items donated by your chapter to your district meeting. These items will be given
to schools in your area where math supplies are needed. Examples of math toys/manipulatives needed are
rulers, measuring devices, protractors, levels, games, calculators, etc. We are asking for any item that could be
used in the math classroom (preschool to high school) to help students better understand math concepts. Be
creative, practical, or both—it’s up to your chapter to decide what to bring, how many/much, and what level(s).
