VOLUME IV ISSUE V It has been a very busy month at Mill Creek Farm. We welcomed 7 new retirees to begin their much-deserved retirement; had our 3 farriers out to ensure all the horses hooves are in the best shape possible; share our wildlife picture of the month and continued on with our trimming with the help of some great volunteers. We dedicate this issue to a very special friend of the farm, Lynne Brennan, who sadly passed away. ~ Mary and Paul Gregory, Justin, Cole, The Volunteers, and all the Horses Retirement Home for Horses, Inc. at Mill Creek Farm The Papilio glaucus, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, is a species of swallowtail butterfly native to eastern North America. It is one of the most familiar butterflies in the eastern United States. It flies from spring to fall, during which it produces two to three broods. Adults feed on the nectar of many species of flowers. They have a wingspan measuring 3.1 to 5.5 in. WELCOME GYPSY AND BLAZE! Rescued by Osceola County Animal Services, BLAZE & GYPSY arrived this week to begin their lifelong retirement at Mill Creek Farm. BLAZE, a 20-year-old mare, was found abandoned on a property in mid-December. When officers arrived, she was found with another mare who sadly had to be euthanized by the veterinarian at the scene due to her advance state of emaciation. Blaze, also severely emaciated, was able to be guided by officers into the trailer and taken back to the facility for care and treatment. Being blind in one eye does not seem to prevent her from enjoying life...she is quite friendly and loves to be stroked. The staff at Osceola County Animal Services did a really fantastic job of rehabilitating this beautiful girl. Their mission is to use all their efforts to care for the horses in their care. We admire all the good work they do on behalf of the horses they rescue. GYPSY, a 25-year-old mare, was found as a running stray in a rural area of the county. She is also a very sweet and trusting horse and it is hard to imagine someone cruelly dumping her. GYPSY and BLAZE became instant friends when put together in their arrival paddock.
