ST ANNES OLD LINKSIs justly proud of its 6941 yard Par 72 Championship links course and welcomes theopportunity to share it with golfers from around the world. Founded in 1901, St Annes OldLinks is one of the fine championship links of England’s north west coast and hosted theLocal Final Qualifying for The Open in July 2012 held at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Other forthcoming major events include the Boys' Home Internationals in early August 2017,the UK Seniors Golf Association North West Championship at the end of August 2017 and lastbut not least - we are proud to be selected by the R&A to host Final Open Qualifying July2018 and for the following 3 years until 2021.

The signature 9th hole was voted by Golf World in the May 2010 issue as the Top 9th Hole inGreat Britain and Ireland. The great Bobby Jones is quoted as saying "it's difficult to see howyou could improve on this". Enough said!

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST ANNESRoyal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Courseconstructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. It is one of the premierlinks courses in the world, host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups andnumerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors OpenChampionships and the Walker Cup in 2015. Northern hospitality has always been famousand Royal Lytham leads the way.

The layout of Royal Lytham & St Annes has remained faithful to the original created by theClub's first Professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes weremade in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, the pre-eminent Course Designer of the timeto make recommendations for improvement.

Over the next four years he repositioned some of the Greens and Tees added numerousbunkers and lengthened the course.

It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, surrounded as it is by suburban housing andflanked by a railway line, but it has a charm all of its own. It is a Links Course that is a longway from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on one's game andwas aptly described by Bernard Darwin, the leading golf writer of the thirties, as 'a beast of aCourse, but a just beast'. He went on to say that 'no one could fail to be impressed by itsdifficulties, which sets a golfer just about as ruthless as an examination as any Course of myacquaintance'.

The Beat were, quite simply, one of the best bandsaround in the late 70s and early 80s. They hadcatchy melodies, razor sharp lyrics, a great look andexcellent vocal mix (Dave Wakelin sounded a bitlike Andy Williams which gave them a unique soundin those days) with Ranking Roger to add sometoasting. “Stand Down Margaret” was on themoney for political commentary whereas the moreconventional love songs like “Door Of Your Heart”and “Save It For Later” were simply gorgeous. Andstill are.Unfortunately, although several of the original bandare still touring and recording, they aren’t doing iton the same stage. I saw The Beat with RankingRoger and his son, Junior Ranking, supporting StiffLittle Fingers at Ulster Hall and more recently at thebrilliant Brudenell Social Club. So when DaveWakelin’s version (called The English Beat forcopyright reasons) announced they were playing inYork I had to go to compare, and indeed contrast, and report back to HASSRA.The two support bands were miles apart. TheMagnificent Seven are a young, local amateur skaband who were thoroughly entertaining, includingan outstanding cover of “Geno.” But Page45 are aleaden Oasis sound-a-like with unmemorable lyricsand turgid Britpop guitar. If the two main lads aren’tpart of Bridlington’s second best Oasis tribute bandI’d be very surprised. Time for a beer. But the main event was outstanding. I’d nabbed aplace which was slightly elevated and right next tothe stage, which was perfect. From the very startthey played like it was 1980 with a combination ofcheery banter from Dave and Roger’sreplacement, King Schascha from Trinidad, andbrilliant versions of almost every one of their hits. Tosay that the audience danced like no-one waswatching was an understatement. One guy had a

ferocious expression on his face throughout as herepeated the same moves constantly and VERYvigorously, a tall skinhead lumbered back and forthas in a daze while an Audrey Hepburn lookalike, complete with little black dress and 60s hairstyleshowed much more style with her moves andcouldn’t keep a delighted smile off her face fromstart to finish. As did all of us (just the smiling, not the elegantdance moves). And no elitist ‘don’t take anyvideos’ stuff, although he did poke fun at some guytexting - they implored people to do so to spreadthe word that they were in the UK.They did play “Can’t Get Used To Losing You”(Dave Wakelin himself embraced the Andy Williamssoundalike comment). “Stand Down Margaret”“Hands Off, She’s Mine” “Save It For Later” etc. I’mconvinced they didn’t play the superb “Door OfYour Heart” (they were asked) simply to prevent itbeing a perfect gig, which would mean that we’dnever want to go and see them again as theycould never be as good. Oh, and they didn’t haveany T-shirts in my size.So all, in all, both incarnations are excellent andwell worth catching if you can. Although it must besaid the Ranking Roger version (simply called TheBeat you may recall) are easier to catch as theyare based here. But the overall hope must be can’t they kiss andmake up and play some gigs with Dave Wakelinand Ranking Roger reunited? That would be somecombo with the dazzling King Schascha, andexcellent sax player Matt Morrish. Now that wouldbring the crowds out.

HALLOWEEN!!!Jack- O’Lantern – by Jon Bratton

We bought a fat orange pumpkinThe plumpest sort they sell.

We neatly scooped the inside outAnd only left the shell.

We carved a funny funny-faceOf silly shape and size,

A pointy nose, a jagged mouthAnd two enormous eyes.

We set it in a windowAnd we put a candle in,Then lit it up for all to seeOur jack-o'lantern grin.

The jack -o'lantern chuckledThen winked his funny eye,

"I would rather be a pumpkin-faceThan be inside a pie!"

Tis now the very witching time of night,When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there aresufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the un discounted "nonmember" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to thesame destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on orbefore the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice anindividual's eligibility for future trips.
