A VOCATION VIEW

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 11, 2020

How has Jesus touched you and made you whole?

In gratitude, ask Him how He would like you to

respond. Could Jesus be calling you to follow him

as a priest, sister, brother or deacon? If God is

calling you, call or email Father Josh Johnson at

(225) 336-8778, [email protected], or visit

www.diobr.org/vocations.

Entrance Antiphon: Ps 129 (130)

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?

But with you is found forgiveness, O God of Israel.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice! O let

your ears be attentive to the sound of my pleadings. R.

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But

with you is found forgiveness, that you may be revered. R.

First Reading: Is 25:6-10a

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

On this mountain the LORD of hosts

will provide for all peoples

a feast of rich food and choice wines,

juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.

On this mountain he will destroy

the veil that veils all peoples,

the web that is woven over all nations;

he will destroy death forever.

The Lord GOD will wipe away

the tears from every face;

the reproach of his people he will remove

from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken.

On that day it will be said:

“Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!

This is the LORD for whom we looked;

let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!”

For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

In verdant pastures he gives me repose;

beside restful waters he leads me;

he refreshes my soul. R.

He guides me in right paths

for his name's sake.

Even though I walk in the dark valley

I fear no evil; for you are at my side

with your rod and your staff

that give me courage. R.

You spread the table before me

in the sight of my foes;

you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows. R.

Only goodness and kindness follow me

all the days of my life;

and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD

for years to come. R.

Second Reading: Phil 4:12-14, 19-20

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians

Brothers and sisters:

I know how to live in humble circumstances;

I know also how to live with abundance.

In every circumstance and in all things

I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry,

of living in abundance and of being in need.

I can do all things in him who strengthens me.

Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.

My God will fully supply whatever you need,

in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation: Eph 1:17-18

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

May the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the

eyes of our hearts, so that we may know what is the hope

that belongs to our call. R.

Gospel: Mt 22:1-10

The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

R. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the

people

in parables, saying,

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king

who gave a wedding feast for his son.

He dispatched his servants

to summon the invited guests to the feast,

but they refused to come.

A second time he sent other servants, saying,

‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet,

my calves and fattened cattle are killed,

and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’

Some ignored the invitation and went away,

one to his farm, another to his business.

The rest laid hold of his servants,

mistreated them, and killed them.

The king was enraged and sent his troops,

destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready,

but those who were invited were not worthy to come.

Go out, therefore, into the main roads

and invite to the feast whomever you find.’

The servants went out into the streets

and gathered all they found, bad and good alike,

and the hall was filled with guests.

The Gospel of the Lord.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sunday: 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monday: Weekday

Tuesday: Weekday

Wednesday: St. Callistus I, Pope and Martyr:

Callistus lived in the third century. He came as a slave to

the city where he would later serve as Pope. He was

eventually freed from this servitude on the initiative of

Pope St. Victor I. Callistus became a deacon and the

caretaker of a major Roman Christian cemetery (which

still bears his name as the “Cemetery of St. Callistus”), in

addition to advising the Pope on theological

controversies of the day. He was a natural candidate to

follow Zephyrinus, when the latter died in 219. He was

caught in controversy when he taught that even the most

serious sins could be absolved after sincere confession.

Because of this teaching on mercy, Callistus was believed

by many to be a false pope however the Church, has

always acknowledged the orthodoxy and holiness of

Pope St. Callistus I, particularly since the time of his

martyrdom – traditionally ascribed to an anti-Christian

mob - in 222.

Thursday: St. Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of

the Church: St Teresa was born in Avila, Spain in 1515.

Her parents were both pious Catholic,s and they inspired

their daughter to take up a life of prayer. During her

later teen years Avila lost some of her early piety and

religious zeal. She became interested in worldly matters

and enjoyed the company of a wide circle of friends. At

the age of 16, her father decided to send Teresa to a

convent school to be educated. This reignited in Teresa

an interest in leading a spiritual life and after some

deliberation she resolved to become a nun of the

Carmelite Order. Teresa had an endearing, natural

personality; her energy attracted and inspired many. They

admired her for both her outer charm and inner serenity.

But at the same time, the religious ecstasies she

experienced caused jealousy and suspicion among her

sisters. At the age of 43, St Teresa decided she wanted to

found a new order recommitting to the values of poverty

and simplicity. She guided the nuns not just through

strict disciplines, but also with common sense. She always

stressed the importance of experiencing God’s Love. St.

Teresa travelled around Spain setting up new convents

based on the ancient monastic traditions. She died on

October 4 at the age of 67. St. Teresa along with St.

John of the Cross are the two great reformers of the

Carmelite tradition.

Friday: St. Hedwig, Religious; St. Margaret Mary

Alacoque, Virgin: St Hedwig, a medieval saint, was

born in Bavaria. She was a duchess and the mother of

seven children. Hedwig was known as a peacemaker and

for her care of the poor and of prisoners. When she was

widowed, Hedwig retired to a Cistercian convent until

her death is 1243.

Margaret Mary Alacoque died in October of the year

1690 at the age of 43. She spent her adult life as a

Visitation nun in France. St. Margaret Mary is best

known for her visions of Jesus during which she

experienced the burning love of His Most Sacred Heart.

She spread devotion to the Sacred Heart in France,

especially on the First Fridays of the month. Her visions,

and the feast of the Sacred Heart they ultimately led to,

help free the Church from the Jansenism, a heresy

common in France at that time.

Saturday: St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and

Martyr: St. Ignatius was martyred in 107 in the city of

Rome’s while Trajan was emperor. He is one of the

Apostolic Fathers and was believed to be the second

successor to St. Peter in Antioch. He is known for the

seven letters he wrote on church unity and structure. He

is the first to use the term “Catholic Church” as a

designation for Christians.
